Research report (MPhil (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this research report I have argued that postgraduate student retention and completion rates in nursing education can be enhanced by attending to the following actions: increased institutional support, initiating students into an ethics of care, and engaging students and lecturers in some form of dialogical communication. In order to ensure that students do not prematurely depart from their programme of study, I have shown that it is not sufficient to offer merely institutional (mostly administrative) support to students, but also cultivating caring and dialogical communication in teaching and learning activities. My argument in defence of caring and dialogical communication is corroborated by an empirical investigation which confirms students’ non-completion and retention in the non-clinical postgraduate nursing education programmes offered by Stellenbosch University’s Nursing Division in 2008. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie navorsingsverslag het ek geargumenteer dat die nagraadse studentebehoud- en voltooiingkoerse in verpleegonderwys versnel kan word deur aandag aan die volgende aksies te skenk: toenemende institusionele ondersteuning, inisi¸ring van ’n etiek van omgee ten opsigte van studente en die betrokkenheid van studente en dosente in ’n vorm van dialogiese kommunikasie. Om te verhoed dat studente nie voortydig die studieprogram verlaat nie, het ek aangedui dat dit nie voldoende is om slegs institusionele (meesal administratiewe) ondersteuning aan studente te verskaf nie, maar ook om ’n kultuur te skep van omgee en dialogiese kommunikasie in onderrig- en leeraktiwiteite. My argument ter stawing van omgee en dialogiese kommunikasie word ondersteun deur ‘n empiriese ondersoek van studente se nie-voltooiings- en retensiekoerse in die nie-kliniese nagraadse onderwysprogramme wat deur Universiteit Stellenbosch se Verpleegkunde-afdeling in 2008 aangebied is.

Faculty Roles in Student Retention at Historically Black Colleges and UniversitiesLangley, Dorothy 01 January 2017 (has links)
Implications for student dropouts include fewer career options and lower earning potential. The purpose of this study was to investigate faculty perceptions of their roles in the student retention process at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the Southeast United States. Guiding the phenomenological study was Lewin's theory of change model. Data were collected using a questionnaire, interviews, and faculty-student intervention logs. The questionnaire was completed by 32 full-time faculty at the study site. Interviews with 5 participants were conducted after the completion of the questionnaire, and 5 participants provided information via a faculty-student intervention log about strategies used to retain students. Data were analyzed through coding of responses and recorded frequencies to identify themes. Participants reported that they should be involved in retention efforts, and primary retention efforts occurred through the student success program, the retention coordinator, first-year experience course, retention committee, and advising. Participants also reported that their role in student retention is as an advisor, and faculty engagement with students inside and outside of class improves student retention. A process change paper with recommendations for improving student retention was shared with the administration of the HBCU. Findings may be used by leadership at HBCUs to increase retention and graduation rates thereby allowing graduates to pursue careers and function effectively in society.

An investigation of parenthood policy among student parents in a Kenyan public university : a socio-educational perspectiveMwangi-Chemnjor, Charity 06 1900 (has links)
This research is set within the context of the Kenyan Public Universities, where with
the changing student population dynamics, students are increasingly choosing to
combine parenting with studies. Many of these student parents both male and
female have had to negotiate the academic requirements as well as the burden of
parenthood. Such a study is important at this time of privatization and liberalization
of higher education in order to open up public discourse on the provision of higher
education and the effect on the socio-economic status of the students. Using
qualitative research analysis based on socio-educational, socio cultural as well as
socio-economic status (SES), a study was designed and conducted with the question
posed: What are the socio-educational approaches of public universities with respect
to student parents. Eighteen (18) interviews of ten (10) university officials and eight
(8) student parents formed the research sample. Qualitative research questions
were prepared in an in-depth interview guide and a focus group questioning route.
Data revealed that there are students both male and female who are actively
parenting in the public university and that they face role conflict and financial
challenges which impacts on retention and completion rates of students in the public
university. The research argues that there is need to create awareness of socioeconomic
status (SES) in the university approach to inclusiveness of all students as
well as student parents. Recommendations based on this study should be helpful as
guidelines for a model on guidance for student parents as well as documentation of a

Factors contributing to low completion rates of National Certificate Vocational (NCV) students at a TVET college in the Northwest ProvinceNthako, Matshwenyego Dorothy 01 1900 (has links)
This study was interested in investigating the factors contributing to low completion rates at
a TVET college in the North-West Province. There is not much research conducted on the
low completion rates at TVET Colleges in South Africa. The study sought to explore the
understanding of completion rates at TVET Colleges, the current completion rates and the
causes and the strategies that might be employed to increase the completion rates.
Qualitative methodology was used to collect data, using semi-structured interviews for all
the focus group interviews. Collected data were transcribed, interpreted, analysed and the
findings were presented. The study revealed that factors contributing to the low completion
rates are finance and management issues, staff problems, policy factors, socio-economic
factors and students’ personal factors that require attention in order to increase the
completion rates. These include lecturer qualifications, student funding, inadequate
infrastructure, drug and substance abuse, involvement of stakeholders and lack of adherence
to policies.
The study recommends proper administration of students’ bursaries, effective Quality
Management System (QMS), lecturer development, adequate infrastructure and efficient
policies to be implemented.
The study might draw the attention of the DHET, the college management and other
stakeholders in order to come up with interventions to remedy the low completion rates at
