A Process Evaluation of the Academic Component of the Hope Scholars Programme (HSP)

The Hope Scholars Programme (HSP) is an after-school programme implemented by the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) in Cape Town, South Africa. After-school programmes (ASPs) are widely described as programmes that are implemented independently of the school day and are aimed at improving the learning outcomes and advancement of kindergarten and high school learners. The HSP began in 1998 with a goal to equip HSP learners with foundational literacy and numeracy skills for the future education and training (FET) phase and subsequent education. HSP activities are implemented under four broad service areas: (a) academic tutoring sessions; (b) experiential learning; (c) psychosocial support services; and (d) community engagement. The scope of this evaluation was the academic component under which the programme offers intensive tutoring in mathematics, natural science and English literacy. The objective of the evaluation was to assess the implementation fidelity of the academic component for programme quality and effectiveness improvement purposes. A conceptual framework for measuring implementation fidelity by Carroll, Patterson, Wood, Booth, Rick and Balain (2007) was used to guide this evaluation. Using the logic model for the programme, the evaluation focused on examining whether the HSP sessions were implemented with the intended process mechanisms through which the programme was designed to lead to its desired academic outcomes. Both primary and secondary data were used to conduct the evaluation. Primary data were collected through oneon-one in-depth interviews with HSP staff members and the volunteer tutor and focus group interviews with the HSP learners. Secondary data were obtained through the review of the HSP documents. An inductive content analysis was employed to analyse the data. The results indicated that the academic component of the HSP was implemented with limited fidelity and poor quality. Programme implementation challenges identified need to be resolved to enhance the quality of the HSP services and programme effectiveness. This evaluation contributes to the literature on: (a) the duration and frequency of the tutorial sessions; (b) the extent to which learners attend; and (c) dropout from the programmes and causes for dropping out in the context of after-school programmes. Among the contributing factors of learner dropout from the HSP, influences that were found unique to the South African context were mistrust between the learners and their parents (mistrust at home) and sweeping of classrooms.

As a working machine was selected accentric press SMERAL LE 250/40, where the compound tool will be clamped.

UML profil pro modelování komponentových systémů / An UML Profile for Modelling of Component-Based Systems

The thesis deals with the modeling of the Component Based Software (CBS) systems in the UML language and with extension of the UML language with using of meta-modeling techniques and with using of the UML Prodile technology. Thesis also deals with Component Based Development (CBD). The main part of this study deals with specifying of methodology for creating of UML Prodiles and with demonstration of this methodology on selected Component System meta-model by creating the profile including the OCL constraints and description of problems with creating of the prodile. Thesis also describes support of the UML Profile technology in existing UML CASE tools. For demonstration purposes thesis contains the case study with example which uses in this work created UML Profile. Profile is created in accordance with specification of UML version 2.3 and OCL in version 2.2. Demonstration is performed and profile itself is created using IBM Rational Software Architect version 8.0.2.

Study of puffing and micro-explosion during the evaporation of Arabian light oil droplets

Although the suspended droplet evaporation and combustion have been studied for decades, fundamental research pertaining to the stochastic phenomena of complex multicomponent mixtures is extremely rare. In this work, an experimental suspended droplet study of Arabian light oil was held to study the frequency of puffing and micro-explosion phenomena during the evaporation/pyrolysis process. The experiments were conducted at three different evaporation temperatures (350 C, 440 C, and 570 C), chosen in accordance with the TGA profle obtained. The suspended droplet experiments were conducted on a furnace with optical access and a gas controlled-preheating system. The droplet size was optically registered at 500 fps by a LaVision Imager Pro HS high-speed camera coupled with a magnification lens Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 mm. Furthermore, a computer-vision data postprocessing program was developed to identify contours and measure the size of the objects in the frame in order to register the temporal evolution of the droplet size. Additionally, a new approach for characterizing the droplet vaporization of complex multi-component fuels is proposed. This method allowed us to study the continuum (ideal evaporation) and stochastic processes separately, by following the profile of the average normalized square diameter ((D=D0)2) and quantifying the breakup intensity (β) of each stochastic event. Based on the behavior of (D=D0)2, two consecutive stages were identified at every temperature investigated, the swelling and the regression stage. At 350 ◦C and 440 ◦C, the evaporation was finally controlled purely by the diffusion evaporation, whereas at 570 ◦C a pure diffusion stage was not spotted. Instead, a second swelling was registered, where an amorphous carbonaceous structure was formed. Due to the pyrolysis of the heavy hydrocarbons dominated the process. The stochastic events involved during the evaporation were successfully identified and classified in breakup modes depending on their β. Additionally, the effect of the temperature on the breakup events was assessed. Showing that the number of breakup events increased exponentially with temperature.

APPLYING BLIND SOURCE SEPARATION TO MAGNETIC ANOMALY DETECTION

The research shows a novel approach for the Magnetic Anomaly Differentiation and Localization Algorithm, which simultaneously localizes multiple magnetic anomalies with weak total field signatures (tens of nT). In particular, it focuses on the case where there are two homogeneous targets with known magnetic moments. This was done by analyzing the magnetic signals and adapting Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Simulated Annealing (SA) to solve the problem statement. The results show the groundwork for using a combination of fastICA and SA to give localization errors of 3 meters or less per target in simulation and achieved a 58% success rate. Experimental results experienced additional errors due to the effects of magnetic background, unknown magnetic moments, and navigation error. While one target was localized within 3 meters, only the latest experimental run showed the second target approaching the localization specification. This highlighted the need for higher signal-to-noise ratio and equipment with better navigational accuracy. The Relationship between Education and Well-being in China

There are numerous approaches to quantitatively measure well-being. Most well-beingresearch are based on income or health situation from economics perspective. The needfor research on women’s relationship between education and well-being is an area thathas not been fully investigated. It is also important to know how the situation ofwomen’s well-being compare with men’s. The purpose of this research is to estimatewomen’s well-being and understand how well-being women is compared with men inChina. Different characteristics of men and women is considered and estimate thespecific relationship between education and well-being. Two measure of well-being areused: self-assessed unidimensional subjective well-being and parametrically estimatedmultidimensional well-being. Two measurement will help to understand the differencebetween subjectivity and objectivity of well-being. To achieve this goal, this researchcomputes and compares the well-being of 34,054 women and men by using ChineseGeneral Social Survey in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Well-being is measured by computingmultidimensionally by principal component analysis which depend on differentdomains of identity, capability, material well-being. All the domains contribute toindividual’s well-being. The findings suggest that, multidimensional well-being indexdiffer from the subjective well-being in ranking individual grouped by importantcommon characterizes. The difference is attributed to multidimensionality of the well-being index. Under this circumstance, education still does influence well-beingpositively conditional on controlling for identity, capability and material well-being.

Assessing and Enabling Independent Component Analysis As A Hyperspectral Unmixing Approach

As a result of its capacity for material discrimination, hyperspectral imaging has been utilized for applications ranging from mining to agriculture to planetary exploration. One of the most common methods of exploiting hyperspectral images is spectral unmixing, which is used to discriminate and locate the various types of materials that are present in the scene. When this processing is done without the aid of a reference library of material spectra, the problem is called blind or unsupervised spectral unmixing. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a blind source separation approach that operates by finding outputs, called independent components, that are statistically independent. ICA has been applied to the unsupervised spectral unmixing problem, producing intriguing, if somewhat unsatisfying results. This dissatisfaction stems from the fact that independent components are subject to a scale ambiguity which must be resolved before they can be used effectively in the context of the spectral unmixing problem. In this dissertation, ICA is explored as a spectral unmixing approach. Various processing steps that are common in many ICA algorithms are examined to assess their impact on spectral unmixing results. Synthetically-generated but physically-realistic data are used to allow the assessment to be quantitative rather than qualitative only. Additionally, two algorithms, class-based abundance rescaling (CBAR) and extended class-based abundance rescaling (CBAR-X), are introduced to enable accurate rescaling of independent components. Experimental results demonstrate the improved rescaling accuracy provided by the CBAR and CBAR-X algorithms, as well as the general viability of ICA as a spectral unmixing approach.
