Identification Of Factors Affecting Integration Of Information And Communication Technologies In Basic Education Schools Grades From 4 Through 8

Sendurur, Polat 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study was to identify the factors affecting the information and communication technologies. integration in the basic education schools. Mixed Model Research Design was utilized to find out the factors directly affecting integration of ICT integration in schools of K-8. Three different research methods were use sequentially. In the first step, new curricula used for Math, Social Studies and Science and Technology courses were examined to draw the pattern of ICT use defined by these curricula. In the light of the information gained through examination of curricula, 20 teachers were interviewed to understand whether they can put ICT based activities defined by curricula into practice or not. Simultaneously, they also identified common problems preventing them to integrate educational technology in their lessons and possible solutions to have a better ICT and education relationship. The literature and the information gained through first two step of the study suggested computer self-efficacy of teachers is very important factor within the integration of ICT. To assess teachers&#039 / computer self-efficacy, a questionnaire was designed by the researcher and necessary pilot studies were completed to conduct exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Final form of the questionnaire was distributed to K-8 schools&#039 / teachers from 12 predefined cities of Turkey according to statistical information provided by EUROSTAT (Statistical Office of European Union). 1025 correctly filled questionnaire forms were returned and the data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics techniques. Result of the study suggested that, Internet is the most vital technology to successfully apply the curricula. Use of Office programs and different educational software also constitute considerable part of the curricula. But teachers indicated that they cannot apply curricular ICT based activities in school setting because of lack of access to technology, literacy, training, time and confidence/self-efficacy. It is also found that, teachers&#039 / age/ and teaching experience negatively contributed to their level of computer self-efficacy when their personal or home computer use was contributing very positively. On the other hand, existing computer training programs were found less effective than expected in terms of ICT integration. Based on these results, some basic improvements and modifications in curricula, training programs, and technology infrastructure of schools were suggested.

Towards a Collaborative Learning Platform: The Use of GitHub in Computer Science and Software Engineering Courses

Feliciano, Joseph 31 August 2015 (has links)
Technical fields such as computer science and software engineering have placed an emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, and training students entering these fields is a challenge that educators and researchers have attempted to tackle. To develop students’ skills for these technical fields, some educators have integrated learning activities where students collaborate heavily and make contributions to each other’s learning, emulating the type of work students will perform in industry. Consequently, the learning tools that instructors use for their courses need to support these collaborative and contributive activities. GitHub is a social coding tool that has seen rapid adoption in the software development field because of the open, collaborative workflow it encourages. This thesis explores the use of GitHub as a collaborative platform for computer science and software engineering education. GitHub provides users with opportunities to contribute to each other’s work through its transparency features, supports integrated discussions, and provides support for reusing and remixing work—opportunities which may be extended to education. In this thesis, I investigate how GitHub’s unique features, such as ‘pull requests’ and commit histories, can be used to support learning and teaching. This work also explores the benefits and challenges that emerge from using GitHub in this context from both the instructor’s and the student’s perspectives. We found that GitHub afforded instructors with opportunities to encourage student participation by contributing to the course materials through the use of ‘pull requests’ and provided instructors with ways to reuse and share their course materials. As well, students gained experience with a tool and a workflow they expected to encounter in industry, and were provided ways to further engage in their learning by giving feedback to or further developing other students’ work. However, we found that instructors and students were challenged by GitHub’s lack of educational focus, as well as the implications of using GitHub’s open workflow on the public availability of student work. Findings from this work determine the viability of GitHub as a tool for supporting computer science and software engineering education, and contribute to our understanding of what activities and benefits GitHub provides beyond traditional learning tools. The contributions of this work include a set of recommendations for instructors wishing to use GitHub to augment their courses, utilizing GitHub’s features to support educational activities such as student contributions to course materials and providing continuous feedback to students. / Graduate / 0984 / 0710 / noelf@uvic.ca

Computational Thinking and Women in Computer Science

Prottsman, Christie Lee Lili 06 1900 (has links)
x, 40 p. : col. ill. / Though the first computer programmers were female, women currently make up only a quarter of the computing industry. This lack of diversity jeopardizes technical innovation, creativity and profitability. As demand for talented computing professionals grows, both academia and industry are seeking ways to reach out to groups of individuals who are underrepresented in computer science, the largest of which is women. Women are most likely to succeed in computer science when they are introduced to computing concepts as children and are exposed over a long period of time. In this paper I show that computational thinking (the art of abstraction and automation) can be introduced earlier than has been demonstrated before. Building on ideas being developed for the state of California, I have created an entertaining and engaging educational software prototype that makes primary concepts accessible down to the third grade level. / Committee in charge: Michal Young, Chairperson; Joanna Goode, Member

Návrh pracovních listů pro vyučování algebraických výrazů s podporou počítače na ZŠ / The Suggestion Of Working Lists For Teaching Algebraic Terms With The Support Of A Computer For Pri- mary Schools

VOŠMIKOVÁ, Markéta January 2008 (has links)
The assignment for this thesis is called {\crqq}The Suggestion Of Working Lists For Teaching Algebraic Terms With The Support Of A Computer For Pri- mary Schools{\crqq}. The thesis is divided into four main chapters. In the first chapter I was focused on the support of a computer at a primary school, and with the theoretical issues connected with this topic. In the second part I created a manual for teachers for the program I created. The third part consists of the program itself (A computer game called Mathhill for teaching the algebraic terms at primary schools). The program consists of four individual parts. The whole program is set as a winter scene from the mountains. A menu comes up first, which is the link to the other games. The pupils choose from the links according to what they want, or according to the matter being studied. All games are animated in the same way; the only difference is the subject and the assignments that the pupils solve. Pupils fulfil the individual assignments and according to the success of their results they continue up the mountain. If the result is wrong the program does not let them go further until they get it correct. With most of the assignments pupils can use the help in the upper right corner. One link in the program doesn{\crq}t fulfil a function of the game, this link differs from the others. This one directs us to an animation of algebraic formula, which leads us to a winter mountain chalet, the equipment of which directs us into the individual animation. The first part is a computer game called {\crqq}Repetition{\crqq}; the pupils re- peat operations with numerical terms and they freshen up on the word alge- braic expression. The second part is a computer game called {\crqq}Counting With Expressions{\crqq}; pupils count examples for simplification, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of the expressions. The last game part is called {\crqq}Slashed Expressions{\crqq}, where the pupils work in the same way until they re- ach the top of the mountain. These games are divided; therefore the teachers can use them separately. The games are equipped with the help section in case the pupils need it. The last part of the program consists of the animation of the algebraic formula. In this part I animated the individual geometrical constructions of algebraic formula that children learn at primary school. The animation can serve to support the lessons. In the last part of my work I tested the CD at a primary school and I documented and evaluated the results.

Computer mediated education has been widely used in several educational levels around the world. Improving The Programming Logic of Children by Creating Computer Games on Greenfoot Framework

Aziz, Yunus Emre January 2011 (has links)
In our modern time, age of education is decreasing day by day. People have started tolearn more advanced things at earlier ages. This fact is also true for children. They arelearning more advanced thing now because they are facing new technology in everyaspect of life. Today, one of the most popular subject is computer programming so it is also one ofthe most popular technologies to investigate, inevitably. One reason to such popularity isthat computer programming is very important in every field of life or business and itseems that this importance will improve with time. Certain levels of logic and synthesisare needed for programming. It is crucial to improve these skills. This master thesis tries to improve and tame the programming abilities of childrenand strengthen the knowledge about the basic concepts of mathematics and physics, which are related to the computer science by creating simple computer games usingGreenfoot Framework. In this project, tutorials like approach was used. Designs of the games was studied astutorials and at the end of the last tutorial, two tests and a survey were applied. According to the results, purpose about improving and taming the programmingabilities of children is achieved. For the other purposes, these are increases around 8%and 16%. Since they are not dramatic increases and the target number is 6 I can not sayclearly that these purposes are also achieved.

The relationship between the use of ICT in discovering mathematics concepts and learning competencies

Mukendwa, Antoinette P January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of Mathematics teachers using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as educational tool in their classrooms. This study focuses on the Mathematics teachers’ 21st century-oriented pedagogical practices that propagate learning outcomes that are considered essential for all learners to prosper in this ever-changing and demanding information society. The learning competencies considered are termed lifelong competencies as they transcend the classroom and school environment and can thus be used to solve authentic problems in day-to-day life. The development of these learning competencies, especially by using ICT, has become vital in equipping learners with the necessary skills to become confident citizens in this globalised world. The role the teacher plays is increasingly acknowledged as having a major impact on this process. An essential assumption of this study is that learning activities facilitated by teachers utilising ICT efficiently and effectively as an educational tool have the potential of enhancing the quality of learning competencies. Moreover, as the role of the teacher in these activities is highly important, the teacher’s characteristics and background have the potential to determine the overall success of the learners. Using the underlying principles of Activity Theory and the conceptual framework of SITES 2006 this study investigates the relationship between these three components, i.e. ICT integration, learning competencies, and teacher background and characteristics. The intricate relationships that exist among these three components are investigated in this study in the context of Mathematics education. This is a secondary data analysis study that utilises data from the SITES 2006 South African Mathematics teachers’ questionnaire. Only Mathematics teachers who indicated using ICT as an educational tool in the discovery of Mathematics principles and concepts were considered. Using Spearman’s correlation coefficient, the data was analysed to determine the strength of the relationships among the variables. Findings of the study suggest that certain teacher characteristics do indeed influence the probability of teachers developing certain learning competencies in learners. Moreover, the findings indicate that a number of the learning competencies investigated in this study are not as readily attained as others. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted
