Previous issue date: 2017-03-23 / Technological and economic development occurred through the extraction of the environment and industrialization in a globalized model of society. This model is now fully dependent on sources of energy to continue to function. However, due to the environmental politicization and the problematization of the use of fossil sources, the search for an alternative energy model has been the subject of academic research and public policies for some years. The present work focuses on the development of a computational program that will provide the user, often unaware of the research in development, with the access and the necessary guidance for the implantation of a tubular rural biodigester. The application was developed in Java language, where the technical and economical sizing methodology used takes into account data such as the type and number of animals and the user's monthly electricity consumption. After the program processes the calculation routine, the user is presented the results in 3 different screens, one containing a generic image with the nomenclature adopted for the estimated dimensions, a screen with technical information of the design and a final screen with information of economic projection. This work is expected to disseminate and democratize alternative research and technologies through the use of digital technology.

Previous issue date: 2006-08-31 / The development of tests for cognitive assessment of deaf students has allowed a better understanding of reading, writing, vocabulary and sign language (LIBRAS). These assessment tools are usually developed for pen and paper application. The objective of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of a computer administered test battery (BALES) for assessment of reading, writing skills and sign language familiarity through: correlation between the tests, comparison of the scores between grades and pen and pencil application. The subjects were 44 deaf students of the 1st and 2 nd grade of the cycle II, of the three Basic School from the Great São Paulo. The computer based version of BALES with 11 tests was administered: The Word Reading Test (WRT); the Sentence Reading Test (SRT1.1); the Choice Picture Naming Test (CPNT 1.1); the Written Picture Naming Test (WPNT 1.1); the Choice Picture Naming Test (CPNT 2.1); the Written Picture Naming Test (WPNT 2.1); the
Written Word Choice Libra Naming Test (WWCLNT 1.1); the Written Libra Naming Test (WLNT 1.1); the choice Libra Naming Test (CLNT 2.1); The Written Libra Naming Test (WLNT 1.1); the Choice Libra Naming Test (CLNT 2.1); the Written Libra Naming Test (WLNT 2.1); the Libra Vocabulary Test (LVT 1.1). The results showed a high correlation for 10 tests but one (LVT) with low correlation. The comparison of subjects scores with the school grade factor showed no significant difference between the two compared grades in computer application, which was coherent with in the pen and paper application results. Additionally, the means of right responses in each test f the battery were similar to those found in the pen and paper application. Results proved the possibility of BALES-on line battery, as a useful assessment tool for reading, writing and sign language (LIBRA) evaluation.

An investigation into the interaction between multiple intelligences and the performance of learners’ in open-ended digital learning tasksKafanabo, Eugenia Joseph 16 July 2008 (has links)
In this study, I investigated the interactions between multiple intelligences and performance of learners in open-ended digital learning tasks, and to suggest possible approaches to the teaching and learning process using computers in Tanzania. With the current introduction of computers in the education system in Tanzania, the qualities of instruction and learner participation in learning computer application skills and achievement have not necessarily shown improvement (Nelson, Post,&Bickel, 2003; Tilya, 2003). It is imperative for computer teachers to know the pedagogical strategies that can help them use the current technology effectively. Researchers in instructional design have suggested instructional methods that incorporate methods that encourage the use of learner-centered instruction, incorporating activity oriented methods, and problem solving that are designed around real-world problems (Huba&Freed, 2000). Learners will be able use their knowledge effectively, reveal their uniqueness as learners, and learn computer application skills in a social setting (Gardner, 1983; Wiggins, 1993, 1998; Teele, 2000; Huba&Freed, 2000). The theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner (1983) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The theory postulates that that everybody has at least eight intelligences which reflect different ways of interacting with the world. In an effort to achieve quality learning, learning must be based on multiple approaches with a series of activities which are authentic in nature and have to be completed by the learners. The study was conducted in Tanzania using a qualitative research design. Four secondary schools were selected and 40 learners doing computer studies course participated in the study. Four intelligences from the theory of multiple intelligences were assessed: logic-mathematical, verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial and interpersonal intelligences. Assessment was done using performance assessment procedures. The findings indicated that there are distinctive intelligence profiles apart from the four intelligences that were investigated in this study. Despite the intelligence profiles of the learners, didactical issues that will enhance ICT adoption in the education environment are important. These include the use of authentic tasks, performance assessment to acknowledge learners unique performance abilities across several intelligences and teachers familiarization in the use of performance assessment procedures. / Thesis (PhD (Curriculum Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

A Dredging Knowledge-Base Expert System for Pipeline Dredges with Comparison to Field DataWilson, Derek Alan 2010 December 1900 (has links)
A Pipeline Analytical Program and Dredging Knowledge{Base Expert{System
(DKBES) determines a pipeline dredge's production and resulting cost and schedule.
Pipeline dredge engineering presents a complex and dynamic process necessary to
maintain navigable waterways. Dredge engineers use pipeline engineering and slurry
transport principles to determine the production rate of a pipeline dredge system.
Engineers then use cost engineering factors to determine the expense of the dredge
project.
Previous work in engineering incorporated an object{oriented expert{system to
determine cost and scheduling of mid{rise building construction where data objects
represent the fundamental elements of the construction process within the program
execution. A previously developed dredge cost estimating spreadsheet program which
uses hydraulic engineering and slurry transport principles determines the performance
metrics of a dredge pump and pipeline system. This study focuses on combining
hydraulic analysis with the functionality of an expert{system to determine the performance
metrics of a dredge pump and pipeline system and its resulting schedule.
Field data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pipeline dredge, Goetz, and
several contract daily dredge reports show how accurately the DKBES can predict
pipeline dredge production. Real{time dredge instrumentation data from the Goetz compares the accuracy of the Pipeline Analytical Program to actual dredge operation.
Comparison of the Pipeline Analytical Program to pipeline daily dredge reports
shows how accurately the Pipeline Analytical Program can predict a dredge project's
schedule over several months. Both of these comparisons determine the accuracy
and validity of the Pipeline Analytical Program and DKBES as they calculate the
performance metrics of the pipeline dredge project.
The results of the study determined that the Pipeline Analytical Program compared
closely to the Goetz eld data where only pump and pipeline hydraulics a ected
the dredge production. Results from the dredge projects determined the Pipeline Analytical
Program underestimated actual long{term dredge production. Study results
identi ed key similarities and di erences between the DKBES and spreadsheet program
in terms of cost and scheduling. The study then draws conclusions based on
these ndings and o ers recommendations for further use.

An investigation of teaching and learning methods in information technology : a case study at a selected high school in Kwa-Zulu-NatalOsei-Asiamah, Joel 10 1900 (has links)
The Information Technology (IT) as subject taught in South African secondary schools is
considered to be a very perplexing subject. The IT as a subject has four learning outcomes
which are E-Communication (weight 10%), Social and Ethical Issues (weight 10%), Hardware
and Systems Software (weight 20%) and Programming and Software Development (weight
60%). The Programming and Software Development enjoys the highest weight as outcome
of IT and it is believed to be the main cause of the difficulty of IT. The number of Grade 9
learners willing to offer IT as a subject in Grade 10 is decreasing and the number of learners
pursuing IT until Grade 12 is declining in every school in South Africa annually. The aim of
this research is to investigate methods that enhance teaching and learning Information
Technology at a selected high school focusing on Grade12 learners. Although this work
investigated many teaching and learning methods, it has come to be known that the hybrid
system or method is the best to adopt and apply in teaching and learning of IT in high schools
especially in the relevant target high school. Thirty (30) participants were sampled. Three (3)
data collection instruments, which were questionnaires, interviews and observations were
used. Results that were obtained from the use of these data collection instruments were
recorded and analysed. Results from these instruments were compared and conclusions
drawn. A major finding was that the hybrid system that combines both teacher-centered and
learner-centered teaching approaches was able to enhance the teaching and learning of IT. / Science and Technology Education / M. Ed. (Natural Science Education)
