Not only for professional utility? Leisure motivations in conference tourism

Serdiuk, Alina January 2016 (has links)
Conference tourism is a young and vibrant industry, which is growing and developing at a prompt rate (Rogers, 2013). The rapid growth of conference tourism and its importance (e.g. economic benefits for destinations) caused a significant academic interest in this topic in 1990's (Yoo & Weber, 2005). Witt et al (1995) argued that the concrete conference theme and the conference destination are likely to make an impact on an individual’s decision, but it is still not clear if a destination or a conference per se attracts people the most. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate variables that are the most and the least important for attendees of conferences from Sweden when they decide which conference they will attend. Moreover, it will focus particularly on the leisure motivations of conference participants, for instance, destination choice, and their importance for conference attendees.  The empirical study of Yoo and Chon (2008) about the measurement scale of factors affecting convention participation decision-making proved that the ‘destination stimuli’ factor is the first among conference participants from the US, the UK and Australia. This study will partly replicate the study of Yoo and Chon (2008), but at the same time, makes its own contribution to the field of the conference participation decision making process. Firstly, it broadens the geographical scope of the studies within the conference participation decision making process, as have been suggested by Yoo and Weber (2005). Moreover, Yi and Park (2003) argued that culture difference might have impact on decision making process, so it is worth to test if there are any difference between Scandinavian and British, American and Australian conference participants.  The study has been conducted using the quantitative method, particularly, survey method, which have been sent out using the Internet Survey Monkey tool in order to increase the response. Overall, we received 143 valid replies that helped us to make a conclusion that for academics from Umeå University in Sweden the ’educational opportunities’ are the most important factor, while ‘destination stimuli’ one does not affect their decision to go to some conference at all. So, it is worth to test if the difference in the results between Yoo and Chon (2008) study and the current one are caused by the cultural difference or by any other feature. Moreover, it is recommend to extend the geographical scope of the studies within the conference participation decision making process.

Mezinárodní trestní soud: Výsledky revizní konference Římského statutu / International Criminal Court: The Results of the Review Conference on the Rome Statute

Davidová, Barbora January 2012 (has links)
The aim of my thesis is to evaluate the results of the first review conference on the Rome Statute that took place from 31 May to 11 June 2010 in Kampala, Uganda. The review conference provided all the attendants with exceptional possibility to share views and experience. Among the attendants were not only State and non-state parties and international legal experts, but also members of intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations. The thesis composes of four main chapters. Chapter one provides with an introduction to the topic of international criminal justice and my experience in the field and my attachment to the topic of the International Criminal Court. Chapter two named Introduction to the International Criminal Court briefly describes the establishment and functioning of the Court. It also provides the reader with summary of the crimes covered by the Rome Statute. The chapter concludes with introduction to cases and situations the International Criminal Court investigates. Chapter three is further divided into six parts and describes the review conference itself. The first part introduces the review conference, its reasons and ambitions together with its program. Part two describes special part of the conference called Stocktaking. Second part is subdivided according to...

The Influence of the Consensus Conference on Public Policies ¡VA Case Study on the Consensus Conference in Installing A Cable Car System over Kaohsiung First

Hsieh, Shu-chen 21 July 2007 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is mainly to investigate the external political process from consensus conference and the correlation between consensus conference and political policy aimed at understanding the external effect of the conference. This thesis also studies the influence of public conference on both the administrative body and city council and the operations of public policy. A case study putting its emphasis on the public conference in installing a harbor cable car system bears a sense of unique significance in the very first consensus conference on municipal agenda in Taiwan. It is found that a consensus conference is perhaps more suitable for local administration to solve municipal issues than for the central government to solve national agenda. Thus, local government should step up its efforts to promote the valuable channel of citizen participation via public conference in an attempt to raise the consciousness of citizenship. The purpose of this article is also to get in-depth knowledge of the correlation between the consensus conference and public policy via comparison and analyses of social theories and publications and to interview dedicated personnel with both the administrative agency and city council for further discussions, which could, in the end, serve as a probable option to solve controversial issues once the deliberative democracy is chosen. The opinions collected via on-site interviews with dedicated administrative agencies (e.g. Bureau of Urban development & Bureau of Human Resources Development) and Kaohsiung city council have been used to analyze and verify the political clout of the consensus onference outside the regular decision-making process, which might become a valuable lesson learned for both the central and local authorities in the future.

Conference Proceedings or Journal Articles: a case study of publications of Canadian computer scientists

Zhang, Li 15 October 2014 (has links)
Conference proceedings are an important venue for publishing original research and often final research in computer science. They represent a large body of the literature in this field, and are generally considered as important, if not more, as journal articles. However, the quality or impact of conference proceedings has been controversial. This research tries to compare the impact of conference proceedings with that of journal articles, studying publications of Canadian computer scientists. Specifically, the following questions will be addressed: what is the percentage of conference proceedings in the computer science literature? What are the trends of publishing in this field? And more important, are there differences between proceedings and journal articles in terms of their structure and impact? Methods: 30 faculty members in the computer science departments, schools, or equivalent from 15 Canadian research universities were randomly selected. Scopus database was searched to identify publications by each of the 30 faculty. The structure of the two types of publications (conference proceedings and journal articles) and their impact were studied. Implications: The research findings will provide a better understanding of scholarly communication in computer science field. The results will: enable research evaluators to make informed decision when assessing the publications of computer scientists; h elp computer scientists to decide where to publish their research in order to achieve greater impact, and to select what document types to read from an increasing number of papers; help computer science librarians in collection development and in information literacy program delivery. / A presentation at C-EBLIP Fall Symposium, October 15, 2014, University of Saskatchewan.
