Este documento apresenta uma dissertação sobre o desenvolvimento de um sistema de integração de dados para geração de estruturas tridimensionais a partir de vídeo 3D. O trabalho envolve a extensão de um sistema de vídeo 3D em tempo real proposto recentemente. Esse sistema, constituído por projetor e câmera, obtém imagens de profundidade de objetos por meio da projeção de slides com um padrão de faixas coloridas. Tal procedimento permite a obtenção, em tempo real, tanto do modelo 2,5 D dos objetos quanto da textura dos mesmos, segundo uma técnica denominada luz estruturada. Os dados são capturados a uma taxa de 30 quadros por segundo e possuem alta qualidade: resoluções de 640 x 480 pixeis para a textura e de 90 x 240 pontos (em média) para a geometria. A extensão que essa dissertação propõe visa obter o modelo tridimensional dos objetos presentes em uma cena por meio do registro dos dados (textura e geometria) dos diversos quadros amostrados. Assim, o presente trabalho é um passo intermediário de um projeto maior, no qual pretende-se fazer a reconstrução dos modelos por completo, bastando para isso apenas algumas imagens obtidas a partir de diferentes pontos de observação. Tal reconstrução deverá diminuir a incidência de pontos de oclusão (bastante comuns nos resultados originais) de modo a permitir a adaptação de todo o sistema para objetos móveis e deformáveis, uma vez que, no estado atual, o sistema é robusto apenas para objetos estáticos e rígidos. Até onde pudemos averiguar, nenhuma técnica já foi aplicada com este propósito. Este texto descreve o trabalho já desenvolvido, o qual consiste em um método para detecção, rastreamento e casamento espacial de componentes conexas presentes em um vídeo 3D. A informação de imagem do vídeo (textura) é combinada com posições tridimensionais (geometria) a fim de alinhar partes de superfícies que são vistas em quadros subseqüentes. Esta é uma questão chave no vídeo 3D, a qual pode ser explorada em diversas aplicações tais como compressão, integração geométrica e reconstrução de cenas, dentre outras. A abordagem que adotamos consiste na detecção de características salientes no espaço do mundo, provendo um alinhamento de geometria mais completo. O processo de registro é feito segundo a aplicação do algoritmo ICP---Iterative Closest Point---introduzido por Besl e McKay em 1992. Resultados experimentais bem sucedidos corroborando nosso método são apresentados. / This document presents a MSc thesis focused on the development of a data integration system to generate tridimensional structures from 3D video. The work involves the extension of a recently proposed real time 3D video system. This system, composed by a video camera and a projector, obtains range images of recorded objects using slide projection of a coloured stripe pattern. This procedure allows capturing, in real time, objects´ texture and 2,5 D model, at the same time, by a technique called structured light. The data are acquired at 30 frames per second, being of high quality: the resolutions are 640 x 480 pixels and 90 x 240 points (in average), respectively. The extension that this thesis proposes aims at obtaining the tridimensional model of the objects present in a scene through data matching (texture and geometry) of various sampled frames. Thus, the current work is an intermediary step of a larger project with the intent of achieving a complete reconstruction from only a few images obtained from different viewpoints. Such reconstruction will reduce the incidence of occlusion points (very common on the original results) such that it should be possible to adapt the whole system to moving and deformable objects (In the current state, the system is robust only to static and rigid objects.). To the best of our knowledge, there is no method that has fully solved this problem. This text describes the developed work, which consists of a method to perform detection, tracking and spatial matching of connected components present in a 3D video. The video image information (texture) is combined with tridimensional sites (geometry) in order to align surface portions seen on subsequent frames. This is a key step in the 3D video that may be explored in several applications such as compression, geometric integration and scene reconstruction, to name but a few. Our approach consists of detecting salient features in both image and world spaces, for further alignment of texture and geometry. The matching process is accomplished by the application of the ICP---Iterative Closest Point---algorithm, introduced by Besl and McKay in 1992. Succesful experimental results corroborating our method are shown.

Road traffic congestion detection and tracking with Spark Streaming analytics

Road traffic congestion causes several problems. For instance, slow moving traffic in congested regions poses a safety hazard to vehicles approaching the congested region and increased commuting times lead to higher transportation costs and increased pollution.The work carried out in this thesis aims to detect and track road traffic congestion in real time. Real-time road congestion detection is important to allow for mechanisms to e.g. improve traffic safety by sending advanced warnings to drivers approaching a congested region and to mitigate congestion by controlling adaptive speed limits. In addition, the tracking of the evolution of congestion in time and space can be a valuable input to the development of the road network. Traffic sensors in Stockholm’s road network are represented as a directed weighted graph and the congestion detection problem is formulated as a streaming graph processing problem. The connected components algorithm and existing graph processing algorithms originally used for community detection in social network graphs are adapted for the task of road congestion detection. The results indicate that a congestion detection method based on the streaming connected components algorithm and the incremental Dengraph community detection algorithm can detect congestion with accuracy at best up to 94% for connected components and up to 88% for Dengraph. A method based on hierarchical clustering is able to detect congestion while missing details such as shockwaves, and the Louvain modularity algorithm for community detection fails to detect congested regions in the traffic sensor graph.Finally, the performance of the implemented streaming algorithms is evaluated with respect to the real-time requirements of the system, their throughput and memory footprint. / Vägtrafikstockningar orsakar flera problem. Till exempel utgör långsam trafik i överbelastade områden en säkerhetsrisk för fordon som närmar sig den överbelastade regionen och ökade pendeltider leder till ökade transportkostnader och ökad förorening.Arbetet i denna avhandling syftar till att upptäcka och spåra trafikstockningar i realtid. Detektering av vägtrafiken i realtid är viktigt för att möjliggöra mekanismer för att t.ex. förbättra trafiksäkerheten genom att skicka avancerade varningar till förare som närmar sig en överbelastad region och för att mildra trängsel genom att kontrollera adaptiva hastighetsgränser. Dessutom kan spårningen av trängselutveckling i tid och rum vara en värdefull inverkan på utvecklingen av vägnätet. Trafikavkännare i Stockholms vägnät representeras som en riktad vägd graf och problemet med överbelastningsdetektering är formulerat som ett problem med behandling av flödesgrafer. Den anslutna komponentalgoritmen och befintliga grafbehandlingsalgoritmer som ursprungligen användes för communitydetektering i sociala nätgravar är anpassade för uppgiften att detektera vägtäthet. Resultaten indikerar att en överbelastningsdetekteringsmetod baserad på den strömmande anslutna komponentalgoritmen och den inkrementella Dengraph communitydetekteringsalgoritmen kan upptäcka överbelastning med noggrannhet i bästa fall upp till 94% för anslutna komponenter och upp till 88% för Dengraph. En metod baserad på hierarkisk klustring kan detektera överbelastning men saknar detaljer som shockwaves, och Louvain modularitetsalgoritmen för communitydetektering misslyckas med att detektera överbelastade områden i trafiksensorns graf.Slutligen utvärderas prestandan hos de implementerade strömmalgoritmerna med hänsyn till systemets realtidskrav, deras genomströmning och minnesfotavtryck.

Moment Based Painterly Rendering Using Connected Color Components

Research and development of Non-Photorealistic Rendering algorithms has recently moved towards the use of computer vision algorithms to extract image features. The feature representation capabilities of image moments could be used effectively for the selection of brush-stroke characteristics for painterly-rendering applications. This technique is based on the estimation of local geometric features from the intensity distribution in small windowed images to obtain the brush size, color and direction. This thesis proposes an improvement of this method, by additionally extracting the connected components so that the adjacent regions of similar color are grouped for generating large and noticeable brush-stroke images. An iterative coarse-to-fine rendering algorithm is developed for painting regions of varying color frequencies. Improvements over the existing technique are discussed with several examples.

Computational workflow management for conceptual design of complex systems : an air-vehicle design perspective

The decisions taken during the aircraft conceptual design stage are of paramount importance since these commit up to eighty percent of the product life cycle costs. Thus in order to obtain a sound baseline which can then be passed on to the subsequent design phases, various studies ought to be carried out during this stage. These include trade-off analysis and multidisciplinary optimisation performed on computational processes assembled from hundreds of relatively simple mathematical models describing the underlying physics and other relevant characteristics of the aircraft. However, the growing complexity of aircraft design in recent years has prompted engineers to substitute the conventional algebraic equations with compiled software programs (referred to as models in this thesis) which still retain the mathematical models, but allow for a controlled expansion and manipulation of the computational system. This tendency has posed the research question of how to dynamically assemble and solve a system of non-linear models. In this context, the objective of the present research has been to develop methods which significantly increase the flexibility and efficiency with which the designer is able to operate on large scale computational multidisciplinary systems at the conceptual design stage. In order to achieve this objective a novel computational process modelling method has been developed for generating computational plans for a system of non-linear models. The computational process modelling was subdivided into variable flow modelling, decomposition and sequencing. A novel method named Incidence Matrix Method (IMM) was developed for variable flow modelling, which is the process of identifying the data flow between the models based on a given set of input variables. This method has the advantage of rapidly producing feasible variable flow models, for a system of models with multiple outputs. Detecting Cycles in GraphQL Schemas

GraphQL is a database handling API created by Facebook, that provides an effective al-ternative to REST-style architectures. GraphQL provides the ability for a client to spec-ify exactly what data it wishes to receive. A problem with GraphQL is that the freedomof creating customized requests allows data to be included several times in the response,growing the response’s size exponentially. The thesis contributes to the field of GraphQLanalysis by studying the prevalence of simple cycles in GraphQL schemas. We have im-plemented a locally-run tool and webtool using Tarjan’s and Johnson’s algorithms, thatparses the schemas, creates a directed graph and enumerates all simple cycles in the graph.A collection of schemas was analysed with the tool to collect empirical data. It was foundthat 39.73 % of the total 2094 schemas contained at least one simple cycle, with the averagenumber of cycles per schema being 4. The runtime was found to be on average 11 mil-liseconds, most of which consisted of the time for parsing the schemas. It was found that44 out of the considered schemas could not be enumerated due to containing a staggeringamount of simple cycles. It can be concluded that it is possible to test schemas for cyclicityand enumerate all simple cycles in a given schema efficiently.

An Automatic Framework for Embryonic Localization Using Edges in a Scale Space

Localization of Drosophila embryos in images is a fundamental step in an automatic computational system for the exploration of gene-gene interaction on Drosophila. Contour extraction of embryonic images is challenging due to many variations in embryonic images. In the thesis work, we develop a localization framework based on the analysis of connected components of edge pixels in a scale space. We propose criteria to select optimal scales for embryonic localization. Furthermore, we propose a scale mapping strategy to compress the range of a scale space in order to improve the efficiency of the localization framework. The effectiveness of the proposed framework and the scale mapping strategy are validated in our experiments.
