Connections

Nicolson, Robert Alexander January 1972 (has links)
The main purpose of this exposition is to explore the relations between the notions of covariant derivative, connection, and spray. We begin by introducing the basic definitions and then use a method of Gromoll, Klingenberg and Meyer to show that covariant derivatives and connections on vector bundles are in a natural one-to-one correspondence. We conclude by showing that on the tangent bundle of a manifold, sprays and "symmetric" connections are in a natural one-to-one correspondence. Although we use a different method, this re-establishes a result of Ambrose, Palais, and Singer. / Science, Faculty of / Mathematics, Department of / Graduate

Approaches to procedural adequacy in logic programming using connection graphs

Moens, Theodore Warren Bernelot January 1987 (has links)
Kowalski's connection graph method provides a representation for logic programs which allows for the incorporation of better procedural control techniques than standard logic programming languages. A proposed search strategy for visual recognition which combines top-down and bottom-up techniques has been incorporated in a connection graph implementation. The connection graph representation also allows for the natural incorporation of constraint satisfaction techniques in logic programming. Kowalski's approach to incorporating constraint satisfaction techniques in connection graphs is examined in detail. It is shown that his approach is not efficient enough to be used as a general preprocessing algorithm but that a modified version may be of use. Increased control of search and the incorporation of consistency techniques increase the procedural adequacy of logic programs for representing knowledge without compromising the descriptive capacity of the form. / Science, Faculty of / Computer Science, Department of / Graduate

We present an introduction to the concepts of complex geometry necessary to the comprehension of the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence. We state and prove that every holomorphic vector bundle which admits a Hermite-Einstein connexion is polystable. Then, we discuss results regarding quiver bundles and state a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for this case. Finally, we state and prove an author's result which relates the stability of vector bundles with the stability of quiver bundles / Mestrado / Geometria Diferencial / Mestre em Matemática

AN EXPLORATORY MIXED METHODS STUDY OF PROSPECTIVE MIDDLE GRADES TEACHERS' MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS WHILE COMPLETING INVESTIGATIVE TASKS IN GEOMETRY

Eli, Jennifer Ann 01 January 2009 (has links)
With the implementation of No Child Left Behind legislation and a push for reform curricula, prospective teachers must be prepared to facilitate learning at a conceptual level. To address these concerns, an exploratory mixed methods investigation of twenty-eight prospective middle grades teachers’ mathematics knowledge for teaching geometry and mathematical connection-making was conducted at a large public southeastern university. Participants completed a diagnostic assessment in mathematics with a focus on geometry and measurement (CRMSTD, 2007), a mathematical connections evaluation, and a card sort activity. Mixed methods data analysis revealed prospective middle grades teachers’ mathematics knowledge for teaching geometry was underdeveloped and the mathematical connections made by prospective middle grades teachers were more procedural than conceptual in nature.

Mapas momento em teoria de calibre / Moment maps in gauge theory

Branco, Lucas Magalhães Pereira Castello, 1988- 22 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Marcos Benevenuto Jardim / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Matemática, Estatística e Computação Científica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-22T22:29:57Z (GMT). In this work it is developed the basic concepts of gauge theory, including the notions of connections and curvature on principal bundles and vector bundles, considerations on the group of gauge transformations and the moduli space of anti-self-dual connections in dimension four (the instanton moduli space). After, moment maps and reduction are introduced. First in the classical context of symplectic geometry, then in hyperkähler geometry. At last, applications to the theory of moment maps and reduction in gauge theory are given. The ADHM equations are introduced and it is shown that solutions to these equations can be given by the zeros of a hyperkähler moment map. Furthermore, the ADHM construction, that relates the ADHM equations to instanton solutions, is discussed. The moduli space of flat connections over a Riemann surface is also treated. In this case, the curvature is seen as a moment map and the calculations can be generalized to flat connections over higher-dimensional Kähler manifolds and to the instanton moduli space over four dimensional hyperkähler manifolds / Mestrado / Matematica / Mestre em Matemática

An investigation into the nature of mathematics connections used by selected Grade 11 teachers when teaching algebra : a case study

Kanyanda, Ester Ndahekomwenyo January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of mathematical connections used by selected teachers when teaching the topic of algebra and to investigate their perceptions of their use of connections. The participants were selected on the basis of teaching experience as well as their willingness to share their ideas. An interpretive paradigm was used to collect and analyse data. The data was collected from three participating teachers. These participants were selected from the three secondary schools in the town of Tsumeb in Namibia. I used video recordings of two lessons per teacher as well as semi-structured interviews as my tools to gather data. After the two lessons were video recorded, I conducted a workshop with the teachers to introduce them to the 5 types of mathematical connections pertinent to this study. We analysed the videos together using Businskas' framework as a basis for analysis. This then formed part of the stimulated recall interviews. It was found that, even though teachers were not aware of the concept of mathematical connections before our interactions, there was strong evidence of connections being made and used in their lessons. The two types of connections that were used most frequently (24.1 percent each) were procedural and instruction-oriented connections respectively. Part-whole relationships connections were used the least with a frequency of 12 percent. All three teachers agreed that they needed to make more connections when teaching and that they would think more about connections in future, particularly when preparing their lessons. The study makes recommendations to encourage the continuous use of connections in teaching mathematics.
