Protiprašná opatření a jejich vliv na biodiverzitu složišť popílku / Anti-dustiness measures and their effect on biodiversity of fly ash deposits

The thesis presents comparison anti-dustiness measures done on fly-ash deposits for several invertebrate groups colonising those deposits. To prevent dustiness, fly-ash is covered by a soil layer. The thesis compares number and abundance of species of any category of Czech Red List of Endangered Species, and species specialized on sandy biotopes on bare fly-ash, fly-ash patrially covered by a soil layer and fly-ash covered by soil layer completely. The consequence of results is that at least small patches of bare soil are crucial for rare species.

Seoul Grand Park 1984-2015: A Historical Analysis of the Changing Conservation and Animal Welfare Priorities in South Korea

abstract: This project analyzes the efforts of Seoul Grand Park Zoo (the largest and most important zoo on the Korean peninsula) to develop and achieve the highest standards in conservation, education, animal welfare, and research over the last three decades. Founded primarily as an entertainment venue in 1984, the zoo has struggled to become a scientific center that adequately provides for the animals under its care and promotes the advancement and dissemination of knowledge. Drawing on interviews from zoo officials, academics, conservationists, and animal-rights activists, I explore the animal welfare management and conservation priorities of a prominent Asian institution. Although the zoo has made significant improvements in animal welfare, it remains constrained by limited resources and government indifference. These constraints have also restricted the zoo’s ambition to become a major center for conservation; it currently concentrates on a handful of projects with broad popular appeal. Based on my interviews, greater collaboration, better communication with other researchers, and more systematic sharing of data would be especially beneficial for expanding the zoo’s conservation agenda. As research and conservation become a more prominent part of the zoo’s portfolio, potential conflicts may arise with zoo’s current emphasis on the welfare of the individual animals under its care. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Biology 2015

Effects of Urbanization on Bat Habitat Use in the Phoenix Metropolitan Region, Arizona, USA: A Multi-Scale Landscape Analysis

abstract: Context – Urbanization can have negative effects on bat habitat use through the loss and isolation of habitat even for volant bats. Yet, how bats respond to the changing landscape composition and configuration of urban environments remains poorly understood. Objective – This study examines the relationship between bat habitat use and landscape pattern across multiple scales in the Phoenix metropolitan region. My research explores how landscape composition and configuration affects bat activity, foraging activity, and species richness (response variables), and the distinct habitats that they use. Methods – I used a multi-scale landscape approach and acoustic monitoring data to create predictive models that identified the key predictor variables across multiple scales within the study area. I selected three scales with the intent of capturing the landscape, home range, and site scales, which may all be relevant for understanding bat habitat use. Results – Overall, class-level metrics and configuration metrics best explained bat habitat use for bat species associated with this urban setting. The extent and extensiveness of water (corresponding to small water bodies and watercourses) were the most important predictor variables across all response variables. Bat activity was predicted to be high in native vegetation remnants, and low in native vegetation at the city periphery. Foraging activity was predicted to be high in fine-scale land cover heterogeneity. Species richness was predicted to be high in golf courses, and low in commercial areas. Bat habitat use was affected by urban landscape pattern mainly at the landscape and site scale. Conclusions – My results suggested in hot arid urban landscapes water is a limiting factor for bats, even in urban landscapes where the availability of water may be greater than in outlying native desert habitat. Golf courses had the highest species richness, and included the detection of the uncommon pocketed free-tailed bat (Nyctinomops femorosaccus). Water cover types had the second highest species richness. Golf courses may serve as important stop-overs or refuges for rare or elusive bats. Urban waterways and golf courses are novel urban cover types that can serve as compliments to urban preserves, and other green spaces for bat conservation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Biology 2016

Rates of Lateral Expansion of Biological Soil Crusts

abstract: Biological soil crusts (biocrust) are photosynthetic communities of organisms forming in the top millimeters of unvegetated soil. Because soil crusts contribute several ecosystem services to the areas they inhabit, their loss under anthropogenic pressure has negative ecological consequences. There is a considerable interest in developing technologies for biocrust restoration such as biocrust nurseries to grow viable inoculum and the optimization of techniques for field deployment of this inoculum. For the latter, knowledge of the natural rates of biocrust dispersal is needed. Lateral dispersal can be based on self-propelled motility by component microbes, or on passive transport through propagule entrainment in runoff water or wind currents, all of which remain to be assessed. I focused my research on determining the capacity of biocrust for lateral self-propelled dispersal. Over the course of one year, I set up two greenhouse experiments where sterile soil substrates were inoculated with biocrusts and where the lateral advancement of biocrust and their cyanobacteria was monitored using time-course photography, discrete determination of soil chlorophyll a concentration, and microscopic observations. Appropriate uninoculated controls were also set up and monitored. These experiments confirm that cyanobacterial biological soil crusts are capable of laterally expanding when provided with presumably optimal watering regime similar to field conditions and moderate temperatures. The maximum temperatures of Sonoran Desert summer (up to 42 °C), exacerbated in the greenhouse setting (48 °C), caused a loss of biomass and the cessation of lateral dispersal, which resumed as temperature decreased. In 8 independent experiments, biocrust communities advanced laterally at an average rate of 2 cm per month, which is half the maximal rate possible based on the instantaneous speed of gliding motility of the cyanobacterium Microcoleus vaginatus. In a span of three months, populations of M. vaginatus, M. steenstrupii, and Scytonema spp. advanced 1 cm/month on average. The advancing crust front was found to be preferentially composed of hormogonia (differentiated, fast-gliding propagules of cyanobacteria). Having established the potential for laterally self-propelled community dispersal (without wind or runoff contributions) will help inform restoration efforts by proposing minimal inoculum size and optimal distance between inoculum patches. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Biology 2017

Going Beyond Paper Parks in Marine Conservation: The Role of Institutions and Governance of Marine Reserves in the Gulf of California, Mexico

abstract: In the face of increasing anthropogenic threats to marine systems, marine reserves have become a popular tool to promote sustainable fisheries management and protect marine biodiversity. However, the governance structures that determine marine reserve success are not well understood. The response of resource users to reserve establishment, as well as the socioeconomic, institutional, and political contexts in which they occur, are rarely considered during reserve implementation. I use the Coupled Infrastructure Systems (CIS) framework to better understand the interdependencies between social, economic, natural, and institutional processes affecting reserve implementation and performance efficacy in the Gulf of California, Mexico. I used a combination of interviews, qualitative case study comparisons, and systematic conservation planning tools to evaluate the role of different infrastructures, institutions, and governance for marine reserve efficacy in the Gulf of California, Mexico. At a local scale, I assessed stakeholder perceptions, preferences, and knowledge on reserves in the Midriff Islands sub-region of the Gulf. My results show differences in fisher perceptions about the use of reserves for biodiversity conservation and fisheries management, misconceptions about their location, and non-compliance behavior problems. At the regional scale, I explored the trajectories of reserve implementation and performance. I show that capacity-building programs and effective collaboration between non-profit organizations, environmental, fisheries, and other government authorities are essential to coordinate efforts leading to the provisioning of infrastructure that enables effective marine reserves. Furthermore, these programs help facilitate the incorporation of fishers into diversified management and economic activities. Infrastructure provision tradeoffs should be carefully balanced for designing scientifically-sound reserves that can achieve fisheries recovery objectives and incorporating stakeholder engagement processes during the planning phase that allow fishers to include their preferences in a way that complements proposed reserve network solutions. Overall, my results highlight the importance of multiple infrastructures in understanding the dynamics of interacting action situations at various stages of marine reserve implementation and operation. I identify strengths and weaknesses within marine reserve systems that help understand what combinations of infrastructures can be influenced to increase marine reserve effectiveness and robustness to internal and external challenges, as well as delivering benefits for both nature and people. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Environmental and Resource Management 2017

Designing For The Continued Survival Of Wildlife: A Case Study On Wildlife Habitat Design In Australia's Alice Springs Desert Park

This thesis explores the nexus between landscape design processes and the conservation of wildlife diversity. Extinction of earth’s unique and diverse animal species is progressing at unprecedented rates, due to humanity’s profound alteration of the natural landscape. Scientific literature increasingly points towards opportunities in the urban and landscape design fields to this issue. Unfortunately, the science and needs of wildlife are rarely integrated in rigorous ways in the planning and design of human landscapes. This gap in professional practice protocols and regulatory frameworks in much of the western world is explored and raises questions about how design can successfully protect, restore, and even re-create viable habitat and linkages for wildlife that is integrated with human landscape. Australia has modeled new integrated wildlife-centric design approaches and projects there demonstrate accumulated expertise in the specific area of wildlife habitat design. Through a case study of Australia’s Alice Springs Desert Park, I argue that balancing human and wildlife needs at every step of the design and building process is necessary for successful wildlife habitat design. This integrated approach does not view wildlife and humans as independent, but rather as two interdependent habitat participants that must coexist to ensure the future of both.

Avaliação dos aspectos relacionados à criação e manejo de reservas particulares do patrimônio natural no Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil / Evaluation of aspects related to creation and managment of private reserves of natural heritage in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil

A criação voluntária de áreas protegidas privadas está em expansão ao redor do mundo, sendo reconhecida como uma importante estratégia para conservação da biodiversidade e complemento dos esforços públicos de conservação. No Brasil, estas áreas são chamadas Reservas Particulares do Patrimônio Natural (RPPNs), áreas criadas em caráter perpétuo, por iniciativa de seus proprietários e reconhecidas pelo poder público. No entanto, apesar de já existirem mais de 930 RPPNs que protegem 680.000 ha no país, ainda existe uma lacuna de informações sobre o tema. Esse trabalho pretende contribuir para diminuição desse problema, utilizando como área de estudo o Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul. Seus objetivos foram identificar as motivações dos proprietários ao solicitarem a criação dessas unidades, os incentivos e dificuldades enfrentadas para criação e gestão, e caracterizar essas áreas e a eficácia da sua gestão. Para isso, seus proprietários ou gestores foram entrevistados e foram consultados os processos de solicitação de criação dessas áreas e outros documentos fornecidos pelos proprietários. Para a avaliação do manejo, foi necessária a adaptação da metodologia de Cifuentes, Izurieta e Faria (2000) para o contexto das áreas analisadas. Ao todo, foram identificados 65 processos de solicitação de RPPNs, mas apenas 36 áreas são efetivamente reconhecidas atualmente. O tempo de tramitação dos processos de reconhecimento tem sido alto e é influenciado pelos procedimentos institucionais, pelo rigor das exigências documentais e pelo número de pendências existentes. As entrevistas com os responsáveis pelas RPPNs demonstraram que estes consideram o processo de criação lento e burocrático. A conservação é a principal motivação para sua criação, mas fatores econômicos e pessoais também são citados. O único incentivo oferecido pelo poder público é a isenção do imposto territorial rural. Outros incentivos para a criação e gestão destas áreas têm sido dados por ONGs e a Associação de Proprietários de RPPN, principalmente na região da Bacia do Alto Paraguai. A conservação e a pesquisa são objetivos de manejo de todas as RPPNs, mas a educação ambiental e turismo também são bastante citados. Com relação à avaliação do manejo, o conjunto de RPPNs obteve 57,6% do total ótimo possível. Mais da metade das áreas foi classificada como gestão muito inferior ou inferior, 17,6% como mediana, e 29,4% como padrão elevado ou de excelência. Os âmbitos mais bem avaliados foram usos atuais e político e legal; os piores foram o planejamento e ordenamento e o conhecimento. Entre os pontos fortes do conjunto estão: compatibilidade das suas atividades com as normas, reconhecimento legal, porcentagem de área alterada, e demarcação física. Entre os pontos mais fracos estão: monitoramento e retroalimentação, tamanho, programas de manejo, informações e plano de manejo. A proteção parece ser uma das maiores preocupações dos proprietários, que de forma geral, parecem reconhecer as principais fragilidades destas unidades. / The voluntary creation of private protected areas has rapidly increased around the world and it has been recognized as an important strategy for biodiversity conservation, adding public efforts to conservation. In Brazil, these areas are called Private Reserves of Natural Heritage (PRNHs), and they are created for perpetuity, by their owners\' initiative, and recognized by the public administration. However, despite the fact that there are already over 930 PRNHs, which are protecting around 680.000 ha in the country, there is still lack of information concerning this topic. This work intends to address this problem, using the case of Mato Grosso do Sul State. The main objective is to identify the owner\'s motivations for the establishment of PNHRs, the driving forces and the difficulties faced by their recognition and management, as well as to characterize these areas and their management effectiveness. To that purpose, the owners or managers were interviewed. There has been also documental analysis and the documents for the application of these areas\' establishment and other related documents provided by the owners were consulted. For the management evaluation, an adaptation of the Cifuentes, Izurieta and Faria (2000) methodology was necessary for analyzing the areas context. In the overall, 65 applications for the establishment of PNHRs were identified, but only 36 areas are currently effectively recognized. The procedural time for the establishment process has been high, and it is affected by institutional procedures, several documentation requirements, and by the lack of required documentation. The interviews with owners and managers showed that they think the processes are slow and bureaucratic. The conservation is the main motivation for their creation, but economic and personal factors were also mentioned. The only incentive offered by the government was the rural property tax exemption. On the other hand, NGOs and the PNHR Owners\' Association have encouraged the creation and management of these areas, mainly for the High Paraguay Basin. Conservation and research are management objectives of all PNHRs, but environmental education and tourism are also fairly mentioned. Regarding management evaluation, the group of PNHRs reached 57,6% of the total possible optimum. More than half of the areas had management classified as very inferior or as quality inferior standards, 17,6% as medium, and 29,4% as high or excellency standards. The set of indicators best evaluated were current uses and political and legal. The worst set of indicators were planning and instructing and knowledge. The strength issues of the group are: the compatibility of their activities with legislation, legal recognition, percentage of disturbed area, and physical demarcation. The weakest points are: monitoring and feedback, size, management programs, information and management plan. The protection of these areas seems to be a major concern for their owners, who usually seem to recognize the main weaknesses of these protected areas.

Para conhecer estas invasões é importante o estudo de procedimentos rápidos de avaliação da incidência de exóticos e de variáveis que possam limitar a sua dispersão e colonização. Neste trabalho, testei a eficácia de um método de inventário rápido (RAP) para obter a incidência de peixes exóticos em lagos e relacionar a ocorrência destes peixes às variáveis locais e espaciais associadas aos lagos, no trecho médio da bacia do rio Doce, MG. Um conjunto de técnicas passivas e ativas de pescaria consistiu o RAP, que foi usado em 74 lagos e comparado com técnicas de mais de 100 vezes mais esforço amostral. A ocorrência dos peixes exóticos foi relacionada a variáveis locais (área, forma, cobertura de vegetação dos lagos, pH, oxigênio, turbidez e condutividade) e espaciais (tamanho do corredor de dispersão) e associadas com caracteres bionômicos dos peixes (forma de corpo e presença de mecanismos acessórios de respiração) e o interesse dos pescadores locais. O RAP foi efetivo e detectou peixes exóticos mesmo quando estes ocorreram em baixa abundância. Particularmente as informações obtidas de pescadores foram de grande importância para os seus resultados. A probabilidade de ocorrência de tucunarés e apaiaris aumentaram com o incremento da área dos lagos, mas nenhuma outra variável local afetou a ocorrência de peixes exóticos na região. A distância dos lagos aos riachos, considerando a sua cobertura vegetal, é muito importante para explicar a incidência de piranhas e tucunarés nos lagos da região. Estes resultados indicam que o RAP que usei é um método recomendável para avaliar a dispersão de peixes exóticos já que apresenta resultados confiáveis. Além disto, as limitações de ocorrência de peixes exóticos são determinadas basicamente pela distância que os peixes têm de percorrer para se dispersarem. Apesar dos peixes exóticos terem um grande potencial de invasão, a sua dispersão pode ser monitorada pelo inventário rápido sugerido, que é uma ferramenta importante para o estudo do seu impacto e, portanto, importante para direcionar nossas tomadas de decisão a respeito da conservação do ambiente natural / Abstract: Biotic species invasions are very common nowadays and cause severe social, environmental and economic problems around the world. To understand species invasions is important to study rapid assessment protocols of exotic species incidence and the variables that may limit its spread and colonization. Here I tested the efficacy of a rapid assessment protocol (RAP) to analyze exotic fish incidence in lakes and to relate them to local and spatial variables in river Doce lakes. Four different techniques constitute the RAP used in 74 lakes and compared to another protocol with hundred times more sampling effort. The exotic fish incidence was associated to local variables (area and lake form, amount of macrophyte mats, pH, oxygen, turbidity and conductivity) and spatial (waterway length and plant cover) associated to fish attributes (body form and occurrence of additional respiration organ) and fishermen interesting in the fish. The RAP was an effective protocol in exotic fish determination including when these fish occurred with low abundance. Fishermen information was relevant to RAP results. Tucunaré and apaiari probability of occurrence were improved with the lakes area increase but any other local variable affected exotic fish occurrence in lakes. The waterway length considering plant cover is very important to explain piranha and tucunaré incidence. These results indicate that the RAP is a good protocol to evaluate exotic fish spread and that exotics spread is limited by only the waterway length. Despite the large spread and colonization potential of exotics fish of this study, their spread may be monitored by suggested RAP, an important tool to study exotics impact on native environment and to conduct our decisions about environmental conservation / Doutorado / Doutor em Ecologia

Estas mudanças estão ocorrendo num ritmo nunca antes experimentado pela natureza. O aumento do conhecimento sobre a estrutura e o funcionamento dos ecossistemas auxilia na busca de respostas de como e que forma estas ações estão afetando os sistemas naturais, e consequentemente no planejamento de melhores estratégias de conservação. Uma das maneiras de acessar os processos ecológicos que são difíceis de monitorar é buscar grupos ou organismos que facilitem o entendimento destas intervenções. A sensibilidade das assembleias de formigas, combinada com a sua importância funcional e amostragem fácil, fazem delas bons organismos para estudos de conservação. O estudo avaliou a estrutura das assembleias de formigas em três unidades de conservação na Floresta Atlântica. As formigas foram amostradas em uma floresta contínua no Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, sudeste do Brasil, em áreas mais preservadas e menos preservadas. O objetivo foi determinar se a riqueza, a composição e a abundância destes organismos diferem entre as áreas contrastantes em relação ao grau de perturbação antrópica. Os resultados mostraram que a riqueza não foi afetada nas áreas com diferentes históricos de perturbação, mas a composição mudou drasticamente em duas das três áreas. A abundância de formigas cortadeiras foi baixa em todas as áreas e não mostrou diferenças significativas, e a abundância de Ponerinae foi semelhante entre os diferentes contrastes. Os resultados do estudo sugerem que nos sistemas estudados, os efeitos nas assembleias são dependentes da intensidade e da frequência da perturbação, e do tempo de recuperação da área alterada / Abstract: The majority of the natural environments have been converted for human use. These changes are occurring in a level never experienced before by nature. Increased the knowledge about the structure and functioning of ecosystems helps in finding answers about how to and in what way these actions can affecting natural systems, and consequently in the planning of better conservation strategies. One way to access the ecological processes that are difficult to monitor is to find groups of organisms that are affect by these changes. The sensitivity of ant assemblages, combined with their functional importance and easy of sampling makes them excellent organisms for conservation studies. The present study evaluated the structure of ant assemblages in three protect areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Ants were sampled within a continuous forest in the Serra do Mar State Park, southeastern Brazil, in disturbed and undisturbed areas. The objective was to determine if richness, composition and abundance of ant assemblages differ between contrasting areas in relation to the degree of human disturbance. Results showed that ant richness has not changed between areas with different disturbance history, while the composition has changed dramatically in two of the three areas. The abundance of leaf-cutting ants was low in all sites and showed no significant differences, and the abundance of Ponerinae was similar across the contrasting areas surveyed. Results suggest that in the studied systems, the effects are dependent of the intensity and frequency of disturbance, and also of the recovery time of disturbed area / Mestrado / Ecologia / Mestre em Ecologia

An economic analysis of the 2007 SCB conference

The Society for Conservation Biology held their 21st annual conference in Port Elizabeth during July 2007. This was the first SCB conference hosted on the African continent. Over 1500 conservation professionals and students from throughout the world were brought together by the SCB annual meeting. The local organizing committee was interested in the economic impacts associated with the conference and approached the NMMU Economics Department to conduct an economic impact assessment of the conference. The Economics Department invited the researcher to undertake this study towards obtaining an MCom degree in Economics. The economic impact of conferences stems from two sources, namely: expenditure by delegates (the demand-side) and the expenditure by conference organizers (the supply-side). The study focused on the economic impacts of the conference for the Eastern Cape. The conference expenditure produced an increase in demand in the Eastern Cape. Only new expenditure originating from outside the Eastern Cape were considered. An increase in the demand for one industry’s output will create additional demand for the outputs of its supplying industries, because industries are connected through forward and backward linkages. These inter-industry linkages produce a multiplier effect. The initial direct conference expenditure created secondary impacts. The latter were indirect and induced expenditures. In addition to secondary impacts, the SCB conference produced spill-over impacts. The spill-over impacts of the conference were noted (but not quantified). The expenditure by delegates was determined by means of a delegate expenditure questionnaire conducted during the conference. The expenditure by the conference organizers was determined in consultation with the organizers, using their financial statements. The multiplier impacts were estimated by means of an input-output (IO) analysis, using a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of the Eastern Cape as the underlying database. These multipliers (Type 1 and 2 multipliers) were estimated using open and closed multiplier models. It was deduced that the 2007 SCB conference created a significant and positive net economic impact in the Eastern Cape. The total direct cash injection of the conference was R12.141 million. Using a Type 1 multiplier this direct stimulus is estimated to have caused an extra R16.502 million increase in gross output. Using a Type 2 multiplier this direct stimulus was estimated to have caused a R19.884 million increase in gross output. The total cash injection of the conference contributed R6.093 million to GVA in terms of a Type 1 multiplier and a R7.344 million increase in GVA in terms of a Type 2 multiplier. Household incomes in the Eastern Cape were increased by R3.384 million.
