Continuing professional development in South Africa : perceptions and attitudes of nurses and midwives

Summaries in English, Afrikaans and Tswana / The purpose of this study was to explore and develop understanding of nurses and midwives’ perceptions and attitudes towards the implementation of CPD, aiming to provide them with a platform to make recommendations to enhance the attendance of CPD.The study was conducted in a public regional hospital in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The purposive exploratory descriptive qualitative research method was used. Data was collected through Focus Group Discussions. Participants comprised of three focus group discussions. A semi-structured guide with open –ended questions was used and discussions were recorded with an audio recorder which were transcribed verbatim. Content analysis of the data was done. The study yielded themes, sub-themes and codes during analysis. Participants perceived CPD to have benefits to keep nurses updated with knowledge, skills and improvement of attitudes. It improves quality patient care. However, they identified staff shortage, time constraints and lack of internet connection as the major challenges. / Die doel van hierdie studie was om ‘n begrip van die houdings en persepsies teenoor die implementering van voortgesette professionele ontwikkeling (VPO) van verpleegkundiges en vroedvroue te verken, ten einde ‘n platform vir aanbevelings daar te stel om die bywoning van VPO te bevorder. Die studie was in 'n openbare streekshospitaal in die provinsie Limpopo, Suid-Afrika gedoen. ‘n Kwalitatiewe, doelgerigte, verkennende en beskrywende navorsingsmetode was gebruik om data is deur middel van drie fokusgroepbesprekings in te samel. ‘n Semi-gestruktureerde onderhoudegids met oop vrae was gebruik om klankopnames van gesprekke, verbatim te transkribeer. Data was ontleed deur middel van inhoudsanalise. Temas, subtemas en kodes is tydens die analise geïdentifiseer. Die deelnemers het VPO as voordelig beskou in terme van die opdatering van verpleegkundiges se kennis, vaardighede en houdings. Gehalte pasiëntsorg word sodoende verbeter. The role of environmental education in dealing with solid waste in the Central Business District of Thohoyandou

The aim of this study was to explore the role of environmental education in dealing with solid waste in the Central Business District of Thohoyandou. The study was carried out in the Thohoyandou Central Business District (CBD). Two organisations were identified as practising environmental education in Thohoyandou, namely, the Environmental Education Desk (Environmental Affairs) and the Environmental Health Services (Thulamela Municipality). Officers from these organisations were interviewed. Vendors and hawkers in the Thohoyandou Central Business District were asked to complete a questionnaire on the role of environmental education in dealing with solid waste. The literature review in the study included the theoretical perspectives on environmental education and solid waste. From this review that solid waste can have both a positive and negative impact on the local and global environment. Therefore, environmental education that has a role in dealing with solid waste has an important part to play in sustainable development. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.(Environmental Education)

University adult education approches: developing a model for the Qwa-qwa campus of the University of the North

This study develops a model for university adult education to guide the Qwa-Qwa Campus of the University of the North in its quest to play a role in adult education practice. It explores the route that the Qwa-Qwa Campus could take in extending its resources to a wide range of individuals, special interest groups and targeted audiences in the North-Eastern Free State community that was historically marginalised from university education. In developing the envisaged model the study explores a number of international and local (South African) approaches in university adult education. This academic endeavour is intended to provide some guidelines for the Qwa-Qwa Campus’ envisaged role in university adult education. In pursuance of these aims (lie study investigates the typical role that a university plays in adult education by reflecting on the following issues: _ University outreach __ Distance education _ University Extension programmes / service _ University adult and ccntmuing education _ Universities and communities __ Sources o f funding for university adult education practice. A review of literature including a home-page survey are used as methodologies of unravelling typical University Adult Education approaches of four universities in Australia ii(La Trobe, Deakin, Ballarat and Charles'STtirt), one university in the United States of America (Tuskegee), two universities in Southe; s Africa (Botswana and Lesotho) and four Universities in South , . . Africa (Western Cape, Cape ToWd, Witwatersrand and Transkei). Key people at selected South African Universities actively involved in adult education practice were interviewed. Three people fi/nn the community were interviewed to assess the needs of surrounding people in the Qwa-Qwa area. The study brings these elements together in an attempt to develop a realistic model for the involvement of the Qwa-Qwa Campus in adult education.

Description and analysis of the process of implemetation of the national qualifications framework (NQF) in nursing education (NE) in South Africa.

The intention of this study was to describe the implementation process of the NQF in nursing education at central and provincial levels in order to explore the change process. It deals with this process as follows: Implementation of NQF in nursing education.; Organizational health at central and provincial levels.; The change strategies used at these levels.; The implementation level reached. It is a qualitative study of an enthographic type to describe and document the implementation of the NQF as it occurred. The researcher who was part of the group that generated the culture of learning in nursing, directly participated in the activities and events as they occurred at this initial stage of implementation of the NQF. A discussion between the researcher and nurse educators took place on strategies used and whether they find the existing environment promoting changes. The research techniques used for gathering information were interviews and documents. With this information the researcher was able to reflect, make inferences and interpretations. The state of nursing education was described within the organizational self-renewal strategies described by Owens (1998). The description of the process of implementing the NQF was viewed against the change strategies as described by Bennis, Benne and Chin (1969), which are the empirical rational, normative re-educative and power coercive. The stage of implementation of the NQF in NE that has been achieved has been assessed using the NQF principles as a yardstick. The data collected is largely qualitative and its analysis has been qualitative. The categories of the theoretical framework which are inputs (organizational health); process (change theories); and outcomes (awareness, planning, use and refinement) of the NQF principles, have been used to analyze the data. The findings on organizational health reveal that nursing education is a healthy organization at both central and provincial levels. It has taken the opportunity presented by the NQF to address some of its organizational problems such as the Scope of Practice for nurses and midwives. There are, however, problems in making final decisions about the planned implementation of the NQF because of differences in vision about the future of nursing education. The movement of nursing education (NE) to higher education (HE) is hampering progress because the National Government is not implementing the Education Act No. 101 of 1997 which has moved NE to HE. Both the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and Natal College of Nursing (NCN) have no coherent human resources development policy. At both the central and provincial levels of NE normative re-educative strategies are ones that have been used extensively rather than power coercive strategies. Empirical rational strategies were also made use of to identify the advantages of the NQF policy and to incorporate them into the planned changes. There is full awareness and planning for the implementation of all the principles of the NQF. The principles of the NQF that are already in use and are being refined are integration of education and training, relevance, credibility and legitimacy.This is because they had already been in use in nursing education and practice before the inception of the NQF policy. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

An RPL strategy for South African technikons

D.Phil. / The purpose of this study is to design an RPL strategy for South African technikons which is based on international practices but customised to meet the needs of returningto- learning South Africans. It will open up access to or facilitate advanced standing in formal training for these learners. The strategy is based on: 1. an analysis of international perspectives on the nature of RPL and current international best practice 2. those aspects of the South African and technikon contexts which have a bearing on the customisation of RPL, and 3. responses and recommendations from two groups of RPL users which inform and refine the theory-based RPL strategy. Although the dominant research paradigm is qualitative, the study incorporates an empirical element: a descriptive cross-sectional survey and three focus group interviews held with groups of RPL users. The design for an RPL strategy is built around three specialised activities which must be carried out systematically within an institution: plan, implement and quality assure RPL. Each of these specialised activities comprises a set of functions containing a number of procedures depicting a step by step process to implement and manage an RPL strategy at three levels: at institutional, agency and candidate levels. The unique contribution of this study is that the RPL strategy can be used as a blueprint for implementing RPL and be customised to suit any context.

Furthermore, careful consideration has been given to the importance of study by the female primary school teacher, and in what way the desire to learn can be induced in the female primary school teacher. The main objective of the thesis was to investigate factors, from an educational perspective, which could be responsible for the female primary school teacher not taking up further studies. For this purpose, a questionnaire was distributed to female primary school teachers in Pretoria, who are currently in the teaching profession yet not involved in present.

Submitted in fuliillment ofthe requirements for the degree of Master ofEducation in the Department of Comparative and Science Education ofthe Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, 2007. / The fundamental problem addressed in this study revolve around methods of facilitation in Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET). The democratic government in South Africa is at present focusing on learners at the adult basic education level to ensure that the needs of adults are met, and that basic demands evident in contemporary society are addressed. While the introduction of Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) in South Africa is progressing towards the right direction, there seems to be problems underlying the methods of facilitation used in various programmes aimed at improving the lives of adult learners. Methods of facilitation indicate insufficient implementation techniques and continuity which results in adult learners relapsing to illiteracy. The more specific objectives of this study were to investigate if the methods of facilitation used in ABET provide implementation techniques which enable adult learners to be independent; provide skills necessary for self-development; answer to the needs of the adult learners; provide for sustained self-development through continuity. The study is broadly structured around five chapters. Chapter one introduces the study, presents the problem under investigation, gives and aim and significance of the investigation and relevant analysis of concepts in the study. Chapter two gives literature review on methods of facilitation used in ABET. Chapter three explains the research design and methodology that was followed. Chapter four contains an analysis and interpretation of research data. Chapter five covers a summary of findings and recommendations. Major findings of the study attempts to reveal the role played by higher institutions in monitoring the methods of facilitation. A comparative analysis to formal schooling methods should be engaged in order to establish a sound relationship between formal, informal and non-formal education. A number of supporting programmes must be put in place for adult learners, after the completion of literacy courses in order to promote a continuous learning culture and ensure the retention of skills and technology acquired.

Career aspirations of high school learners

A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at the University of Zululand, 2004. / The present investigation consists of two objectives. The first aim is to investigate the nature of career aspirations of Black high school learners. The second aim is to find out whether learners' characteristics have an influence on their choice of a career. A questionnaire was administered to a group of 102 learners from grades ten to twelve. The findings indicate that a high percentage of respondents hold positive attitudes towards career aspiration. Results also indicate that variables such as year of study, age, gender and educational stream have no significant influence on career aspirations.
