Dance and Performance Arts Center: Building from the Core

Core is defined as the central, innermost, most essential part of anything. In dance every technique and movement requires intense control, which is provided by core strength. The core in the human body is the torso that consists of the abdominal muscles. These muscles cover the rib cage and protect the lungs which are the respiratory center for the body. Breath control is one of the best ways to garner focus for the dancer. In this thesis, the concept of the"core" becomes the basis for the design of a building devoted to dance and located within the city. Since a defined core is crucial to the dancer in order to have a fluid performance, its existence within the building's design needs to have an outstanding presence and role. This guiding component for this thesis in combination with site investigation, research, and design process will lead to the conceptualization and final product of the Dance and Performance Arts Center. / Master of Architecture

This thesis looks to investigate cultural effects on research organizations work with core facilities and how to adhere to the cultural setting in a core facility. Previous literature on core facilities have ignored culture as a concept and literature on organizational culture have little empirical material regarding core facilities. Through a qualitative study this thesis aims to fill some of the gaps. An overview of literature is presented and frameworks to categorize and conducting deeper analysis are chosen. Empirical material was collected from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm which has an ongoing work with addressing issues of change and developing their CFs. The analysis shows that culture can be a cause for value misalignments, inefficient practices and create barriers for collaborations. Further it shows that an organization's need to have clear definitions, create structures which are sufficient for the culture, work with evaluation and more. As a final contribution the thesis suggests that venturing into areas such as knowledge management could be relevant for further studies. / Denna uppsats undersöker kulturella effekter som uppstår i forskningsorganisationers arbete med core faciliteter och hur de kan tillägna sig den rådande kulturella miljön. Tidigare litteratur på området core faciliteter utesluter kultur som koncept och litteratur inom organisationskultur har begränsat empiriskt material gällande core faciliteter. Genom en kvalitativ studie ämnar denna uppsats att fylla i några av nämnda luckor. En överblick av rådande litteratur presenteras och ett ramverk för att utföra en analys har valts. Empiriskt material has insamlats från Karolinska Institutet i Stockholm där de har pågående arbete med att tillmötesgå utmaningar inom och utveckla sina core faciliteter. Analysen visar att kultur kan vara orsaken till felriktade värderingar, ineffektiva metoder och barriärer för kommunikation. Vidare visas att en organisation behöver ha tydliga definitioner, skapa strukturer som är linje med sin kultur samt jobba med uppföljning och utvärdering. Som ett avslutande bidrag visar studien även på ett annat teoretiskt område där vidare undersökningar skulle vara relevant, nämligen knowledge management.

Background: The topical business subject, motivation, is claimed to have a positive correlation with performance, making the subject highly relevant and important for contemporary companies around the world. As capital goods industries are today changing strategies into integrated solution customer offerings, motivation at all units of the value chain is a matter of increasing importance. Being part of an integrated solution strategy, non-core units are contributing to the overall package offered to customers, but typically in less organizational focus and with lack of stability due to e.g. outsourcing trends. As their importance might at times be overlooked, what affects their motivation?Aim: The main focus of this thesis is on motivation within a non-core unit. The studied single case is an Ericsson non-core unit, SITE. The aim of this study is to contribute to an understanding of what affects motivation for employees working in a non-core unit. More closely, the authors will consider factors that can influence motivation and what ultimately affects these factors. Completion and results: With the contribution on the subject of motivating non-core employees, it is the authors understanding that employees of a non-core unit are affected by several motivational factors. Adding up the motivational factors, there are two ultimate features affecting motivation i.e. meaning and recognition. As a part of an integrated solution, and the knowledge of previously outsourced non-core units, employees need to feel that they are employed with a meaning. Further, the feature of recognition affects non-core employee motivation, and it is crucial that colleagues, other units and the organization recognize them.

Kärnprocessen inom barnhälsovården

The core process is responsible for internal business development and is the process that runs through the organization and the results which creates a value for the customer. Some research suggests that identification of the client's conscious or unconscious needs clarifying the so-called core process in the organization and operations can thus be more effective. The study aims to identify and analyze the experience of the core process within child health care. The method has been interviews with nine managers and 10 clinic nurses in a county. The results show a lack of knowledge regarding core process and process work. However, the respondents have a sense of what the core process is, although the experience of the core process differs between managers and child health nurses in the study. The discussion describes the obstacles and supporting factors for a common core process.   Keywords: core process, child health care, core process management, process in health care, process management / Kärnprocessen står för verksamhetens inre utveckling och är den process som löper tvärs igenom organisationen och vars resultat skapar ett värde för kunden. Det finns forskning som tyder på att identifikation av kundens medvetna eller omedvetna behov tydliggör den så kallade kärnprocessen i organisationen. Genom processledning får medarbetarna en helhetssyn och kunskap om både interna och externa kunders behov. Det har en positiv inverkan på medarbetarnas arbetstrivsel och verksamhetens utveckling. Syftet med studien är att identifiera och analysera upplevelsen av kärnprocessen inom barnhälsovården. Metoden har varit kvalitativa intervjuer med nio verksamhetschefer och 10 BVC-sköterskor i ett av landets län. Resultatet visar på en kunskapsbrist beträffande kärnprocess och processarbete. Däremot har respondenterna en upplevelse av vad kärnprocessen är, även om upplevelsen av kärnprocessen skiljer sig mellan verksamhetscheferna och BVC-sköterskorna i studien. I diskussionen beskrivs hindrande och stödjande faktorer för en gemensam kärnprocess.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Dispersed and Core-Shell Metal Alloy Catalysts: Density Functional Theory Studies

Pt-based alloy surfaces are used to catalyze the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), where molecular oxygen is converted into water on fuel cell electrodes. In this work, we address challenges due to the cost of high Pt loadings in the cathode electrocatalyst, as well as those arising from catalyst durability. We aim to develop an increased understanding of the factors that determine ORR activity together with stability against surface segregation and dissolution of Pt-based alloys. We firstly focus on the problem of determining surface atomic distribution resulting from surface segregation phenomena. We use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations on PtCo and Pt3Co overall compositions, as well as adsorption of water and atomic oxygen on PtCo(111) and Pt-skin structures. The bonding between water and surfaces of PtCo and Pt-skin monolayers are investigated in terms of orbital population. Also, on both surfaces, the surface reconstruction effect due to high oxygen coverage and water co-adsorption is investigated. Although the PtCo structures show good activity, a large dissolution of Co atoms tends to occur in acid medium. To tackle this problem, we examine core-shell structures which showed improved stability and activity compared to Pt(111), in particular, one consisting of a surface Pt-skin monolayer over an IrCo or Ir3Co core, with or without a Pd interlayer between the Pt surface and the Ir-Co core. DFT analysis of surface segregation, surface stability against dissolution, surface Pourbaix diagrams, and reaction mechanisms provide useful predictions on catalyst durability, onset potential for water oxidation, surface atomic distribution, coverage of oxygenated species, and activity. The roles of the Pd interlayer in the core-shell structures that influence higher ORR activity are clarified. Furthermore, the stability and activity enhancement of new shell-anchor-core structures of Pt/Fe-C/core, Pt/Co-C/core and Pt/Ni-C/core are demonstrated with core materials of Ir, Pd3Co, Ir3Co, IrCo and IrNi. Based on the analysis, Pt/Fe-C/Ir, Pt/Co-C/Ir, Pt/Ni-C/Ir, Pt/Co-C/Pd3Co, Pt/Fe-C/Pd3Co, Pt/Co- C/Ir3Co, Pt/Fe-C/Ir3Co, Pt/Co-C/IrCo, Pt/Co-C/IrNi, and Pt/Fe-C/IrNi structures show promise in terms of both improved durability and relatively high ORR activity.

The Influence of Core Technical Competencies to Compamy Transformation ¡V An analysis of Grounded Theory

This thesis is a case study about the transformation processes for a petrochemical corporation in Taiwan during the last thirty-nine years (1965~2003). We adopted the Grounded theory as the research method to probe the relationships between growth and change for the case company. We had several interviews with senior managers. In addition, the public reports about the company are also collected, such as news and financial analyses on newspapers or journals. There have been four phases of company development that are divided by three changes. According to the findings in this research, it is concluded that most of the transformation or change decisions were based on the core competence. Therefore, the R&D capabilities that have been much emphasized by the company provide the speed and flexibility for the company to adapt the industrial dynamics. Another important factor is the vision of the executive managers. They make good decisions because they foresee the company needs for the growth associated with the environmental changes. Finally, we have found that the core technical competence plays the essential role for the corporate transformation. Enterprises should well recognize their cores and then develop proper business strategies. They should plan for changes and incorporate them into organizational process to establish a company¡¦s culture

Large 3C distributers showed in Taiwan in 1992s. Since more and more large 3C distributers set stores across Taiwan, their economies of scale lead the whole 3C-channel market become ¡§the big is always the big and the small.¡¨ Many companies that do not have competencies have gone out the market. However, in this market, many outstanding small-middle 3C distributors are not affected, and have good performance. This fact reflects that these small-middle 3C distributors have some core competencies that can not be replaced by large 3C distributers. The business models and strategies of these small-middle 3C distributers are the main issues of this study. Considering the consistency and extensiveness of subjects in the 3C industry, this study selected three large 3C distributers as research subjects. Firstly, second-hand data was collected, and interviews with managers of the three distributers were also conducted. Then, five outstanding small and middle distributers were interviewed to compare their business modes and strategies with the three large 3C distributers. Based on these data, it is helpful to understand core competencies and advantages of small and middle distributers. The results show that although large 3C distributers have their main advantages, they do not do well in the development of niche markets, efficient responsiveness of environment changes, and kindly attitude to consumers. If small and middle enterprises can clearly understand their weakness, avid to directly fight with large 3C distributers, expand their potential advantages, and keep close with customers, they also could have living space and will be difficult be replaced.
