Source Apportionment Analysis of Measured Volatile Organic Compounds in Corpus Christi, Texas

Abood, Ahmed T. 05 1900 (has links)
Corpus Christi among of the largest industrialized coastal urban areas in Texas. The strategic location of the city along the Gulf of Mexico allows for many important industries and an international business to be located. The cluster of industries and businesses in the region contribute to the air pollution from emissions that are harmful to the environment and to the people living in and visiting the area. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) constitute an important class of pollutants measured in the area. The automated gas chromatography (Auto GC) data was collected from Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and source apportionment analysis was conducted on this data to identify key sources of VOC affecting this study region. EPA PMF 3.0 was employed in this sources apportionment study of measured VOC concentration during 2005 - 2012 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The study identified nine optimal factors (Source) that could explain the concentration of VOC at two urbane monitoring sites in the study region. Natural gas was found to be the largest contributor of VOC in the area, followed by gasoline and vehicular exhaust. Diesel was the third highest contributor with emissions from manufacturing and combustion processes. Refineries gases and evaporative fugitive emissions were other major contributors in the area; Flaring operations, solvents, and petrochemicals also impacted the measured VOC in the urban area. It was noted that he measured VOC concentrations were significantly influenced by the economic downturn in the region and this was highlighted in the annual trends of the apportioned VOC.

Through field research feasts of Corpus Christi city Matão / SP in the years 2011 and 2012 are discussed themes 'party', 'image', 'culture' and 'sacred'. / This paper aims to understand the meaning of the Feast of Corpus Christi today, as well as its relation with space and religion. The main point of this work is to analyze this ceremony considering the ludic, the artistic, the perfomative and the ephemeral essence it holds. Corpus Christi is a thirteenth century catholic procession that celebrates Christ’s real and substantial presence in the Eucharist; it’s the day when the Blessed Sacrament it taken to a procession. The ethnographic setting to be covered in this paper is the celebration of this solemnity in N. Srª da Piedade Parish, in Mage, in the Rio de Janeiro State, and this essay will investigate the reasons and the meanings attributed to this art by those who make it. Considering that the Corpus Christi rugs are made on the street and belong to this context, one of the main points of this research has been to analyze this sacred-profane dichotomy, not as opposed categories but as interactive ones. Another aspect here covered is the production of the rug, so that the symbolic action of drawing holy pictures on this unusual space – the street – can be understood. Along with those multiple possibilities of analysis, the idea of “fest” and its collective effervescence character, which is able to freshen pacts and reinforce communion, will be discussed. All these categories - which are open to many different analyses -whenever it comes to the production of the rug or to the procession, are the ones who certify the uniqueness of this celebration.

A Critical Analysis of the Educational Program of the Lorenzo De Zavala Elementary School and the Northside Junior High School of Corpus Christi, Texas, to Determine whether Industrial Arts is Needed and Wanted

Lopez, Lawrence January 1951 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine, by means of a survey, the desires and needs of Latin-American children in connection with an educational program in the elementary school and at the junior-high-school level. It was recognized at the outset of this investigation that these pupils may be influenced materially both by the lower standard of education of their parents and the higher standard of education of their teachers. Language difficulties, living conditions at home, and loyalty to native teachings, customs, and traditions act as opposing forces in the effective educational training of these pupils in the schools of Texas.

Hypoxia modeling in Corpus Christi Bay using a hydrologic information system

To, Sin Chit 05 May 2015 (has links)
Hypoxia is frequently detected during summer in Corpus Christi Bay, Texas, and causes significant harm to benthic organism population and diversity. Hypoxia is associated with the density stratification in the Bay but the cause of stratification is uncertain. To support the study of hypoxia and stratification, a cyberinfrastructure based on the CUAHSI (Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc) Hydrologic Information System (HIS) is implemented. HIS unites the sensor networks in the Bay by providing a standard data language and protocol for transferring data. Thus hypoxia-related data from multiple sources can be compiled into a structured database. In Corpus Christi Bay, salinity data collected from many locations and times are synthesized into a three-dimensional space-time continuum using geostatistical methods. The three dimensions are the depth, the distance along a transect line, and time. The kriged salinity concentration in space and time illuminates the pattern of movement of a saline gravity current along the bottom of the Bay. The travel time of a gravity current in the Bay is estimated to be on the order of one week and the speed is on the order of 1 km per day. Statistical study of high-resolution wind data shows that the stratification pattern in the Bay is related to the occurrence of strong, southeasterly winds in the 5 days prior to the observation. This relationship supports the hypothesis that stratification is caused by the wind initiating hypersaline gravity currents which flow from Laguna Madre into Corpus Christi Bay. An empirical physical hypoxia model is created that tracks the fate and transport of the gravity currents. The model uses wind and water quality data from real-time sensors published by HIS to predict the extent and duration of hypoxic regions in the Bay. Comparison of model results with historical data from 2005 to 2008 shows that wind-driven gravity currents can explain the spatially heterogeneous patterns of hypoxic zones in Corpus Christi Bay. / text
