The relevance of the effective school correlates, to alternative education settings, for student in a correctional system, as identified by the teachers and adminstrators in selected charter schools, in Harris County, TexasCortez-Rucker, Vance 15 May 2009 (has links)
The State of Texas accepted the Effective School Research model and its
correlates as a way of determining whether the state’s schools are effective. This
included all juvenile justice alternative educational facilities.
The purpose of the study was to assess the relevance of the Effective School
Correlates to alternative educational settings for students in a correctional system as
identified by the teachers and administrators in selected charter schools in Harris
County, Texas.
Secondly, the study was to suggest modification to the Effective School
Correlates to make them relevant to an alternative educational setting for students in the
correctional system in selected charter schools in Harris County, Texas.
The literature revealed a potential lack of fit between the Effective School
Correlates as the “Key Characteristic of Effective Schools” and their relevance to the context of alternative schools for students in the correctional systems. This study led to
the postulation that the Effective School Correlates as written may need altering to meet
the needs of the specialized correctional school setting. However, it is not clear what
shape or direction this alteration would take.
Findings of this study indicated that problems existed with the application of the
Correlates as they related to the selected Charter Schools in Harris County, Texas. The
population size limited the study and caution should be taken not to over-generalize the
data.

<p>This study investigates if there is a scientific consensus among experts in regard to diagnosing psychopathy, treatment of psychopaths, and if psychopathy is a reliable/valid predictor for recidivism. These results have been compared to how psychopathic diagnoses’ are used within the Swedish correctional system. Questionnaires were answered by 11 experts in the field of psychiatry and psychology. The results showed that no consensus exists in regard to diagnosing psychopathy, or its treatment. As for predicting recidivism there is someagreement. In short, different professionals claim different views. The Department of Corrections official position was static, e.g. psychopaths can be easily identified and most should be denied treatment. If an inmate was deemed as psychopathic the possibility for rehabilitation, furloughs or other alleviations, were greatly diminished.</p><p>Keywords: Psychopathy, psychopathic diagnosis, treatment, recidivism, correctional system</p>

Employees of the criminal correctional system have a duty to notify social services if they suspect that children are exposed to maltreatment, according to Chapter 14, § 1 SoL. Despite the obligation to report, studies show that this is not done at all times. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how the criminal correctional system in Kalmar looks at notification if they suspect that children are exposed to maltreatment. To examine this, we used qualitative research method based on semi-structuring interviews; these were carried out with six employees, working in the criminal correctional system. The answers that emerged during the interviews have been analyzed using Yeheskel Hasenfeld theory of human services organizations, and trough previous research. The results of this study show that the level of knowledge has improved recently and it is not always certain that issues are reported.

The purpose of this essay was to compile science concerning social isolation based on the experiences from people who had been detained, in what ways the social isolation affected an individual and to what extent the facility members mattered concerning the work with clients in social isolation. The method used was a literature study in the form of a scoping review based on seven studies and the theory used was Honneth's theory of recognition. The collected data was processed through a qualitative content analysis which resulted in the four themes social strain, consequences of isolation, dehumanization and treatment. The conclusion based on the essay's purpose was that client's experiences of isolation were negative, with self-harm, neglect and loss of identity. It also stated that the facility memberscould play an important role in terms of understanding concerning the effects the isolation had on an individual. The social aspect remained as a fundamental need even when an individual was detained. / Syfte med uppsatsen var att sammanställa forskning kring social isolering utifrån frihetsberövade individers erfarenheter, på vilket sätt den sociala isoleringen påverkade en individ samt vilken betydelse personalen kunde ha i arbetet med klienter som blev socialt isolerade. Metoden som användes var en litteraturstudie i form av en översiktsstudie utifrån sju studier och teorin som tillämpades var Honneths teori om erkännande. Empirin genomgick en kvalitativ innehållsanalys som resulterade i fyra teman vilka var social påfrestning, isoleringens konsekvenser, avhumanisering samt bemötande. Slutsatsen från studiens syfte var att klienterna upplevde isoleringen som något negativt i form av självskadebeteende, försummelse samt identitetsförlust. Dessutom framkom det att personalen kunde spela en betydande roll i form av förståelse gällande isoleringens påverkan för en individ. Den sociala faktorn kvarstod som ett grundläggande behov även när en individ blev frihetsberövad.

Hosting 22 percent of the world’s prison population, the United States is the number one country in the world regarding incarceration rates where 1 in 109 adults are locked up behinds bars and about two-thirds of offenders will recidivate within three years of their release (Durose, Coope, & Snyder, 2014; Kaeble, Glaze, Tsoutis, & Minton, 2016; U.S. Census Bureau, 2015; Walmsley, 2013). Sweden has one of the lowest recidivism and incarceration rates in the world where only 29 percent reoffend and 1 in 2,278 of their total population is behind bars (Kriminalvården, 2017; The World Bank, 2016). The purpose of this study is to understand the underlying reasons to these differences by comparing the U.S. and Swedish criminal justice systems and to find possible solutions of improvement to diminish the incarceration, recidivism, and crime rates in the U.S. Specifically, the policing, court, and correctional systems will be further compared.

Considerando a importância e diversidade das relações eu-outro- mundo que este sistema cria e perpetua, nos propusemos a responder à seguinte indagação: de que forma se dão, e que implicações trazem, as relações eu-outro- mundo no âmbito das relações entre psicólogos e sentenciados do sistema penitenciário no contexto do Exame Criminológico? Levantamos questões e tentamos respondê-las a partir da perspectiva do Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural (Simão, 2010). A pesquisa se deu por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com psicólogos funcionários desta instituição que realizam ou já realizaram Exames Criminológicos. Os resultados apontaram para a procedência e relevância, para as relações em questão, de se tomar o Exame Criminológico como meio mediacional, desde a perspectiva de Wertsch (1995) / The correctional system is a research and study object in areas as diverse as: law, education, social work, economy, sociology, psychology. Considering the importance and diversity of the I-other-world relations that this system creates and perpetuates, we proposed to address the following issue: how do the I-other-world relations take place in the scope of the relations between psychologists and convicts, in the context of the Criminological Examination, and what are their implications? We put forth questions and attempted to answer them from the perspective of the Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism (Simão, 2010). The research was carried out through semi-structured interviews with psychologists employed in this institution who perform or have performed criminological examinations. The results suggest that the criminological examination is justified and relevant for the relations in question. It is suggested that the criminological examination may be used as a mediational means, from Wertschs perspective (1995)
