O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o comportamento da concentração plasmática de triptofano ([TRP]) e de variáveis cinemáticas em séries de treinamento intervalado em diferentes percentuais da velocidade crítica (VC) no nado crawl. Foram voluntários 14 nadadores do sexo masculino de nível competitivo, com, pelo menos, quatro anos de experiência na modalidade e nadando 48 ± 11 km por semana. Os indivíduos executaram dois protocolos distintos, em diferentes dias, realizados em piscina de 25 m: 1) repetições de 200 e 400 m, em máxima intensidade (V200 e V400) em ordem aleatória e separadas por, no mínimo, 24 horas, para a determinação da VC; 2) duas séries de treinamento intervalado (repetições de 400 m) até a ocorrência da exaustão, em ordem aleatória, com intervalo mínimo de 24 horas entre elas: série com intensidade equivalente a 95% da VC (VC95) e série com intensidade equivalente a 100% da VC (VC100). Em ambas (VC95 e VC100) foi solicitado para os participantes que realizassem o maior número possível de repetições de 400 m, na velocidade pré-estabelecida, com intervalos de 40 s de repouso passivo. Um pacer luminoso, subaquático, foi utilizado para controle da velocidade de nado. Foram determinados: [TRP], concentração plasmática de prolactina ([PRL]) e concentração plasmática de ácidos graxos livres ([AGL]); concentração de lactato sanguíneo, frequencia cardíaca (FC) e esforço percebido; duração das fases da braçada, modelo de coordenação, índice de coordenação (IdC), simetria ou assimetria de nado, freqüência média de ciclos de braçadas (FB) e distância média percorrida por ciclo de braçada (DC). Os principais resultados foram: (1) [TRP] e [AGL] não apresentaram diferenças na VC95 e na VC100 (p > 0,05); (2) [PRL] apresentou incremento significativo tanto na VC95 como na VC100 (p < 0,05); (3) aumento significativo da [LA] e do EP na VC95 e na VC100 (p < 0,05); (4) incremento significativo em FB e redução na DC, tanto na VC95 como na VC100; (5) valores de IdC similares na VC95 e na VC100. Desta forma, podemos concluir que, nas séries VC95 e VC100, não ocorrem mudanças da [TRP] e da [AGL]. Já o EP, a [LA], a [PRL] e a FC apresentaram incremento em ambas as séries, o que indica que ocorreu fadiga para o exercício realizado nas condições de instabilidade metabólica. Volunteers were 14 competitive male swimmers with at least four years experience in this style and swimming 48 ± 11 km per week. The subjects performed two different protocols on different days in a 25 m pool: 1) repetitions of 200 and 400 m at maximum intensity (S200 and S400) in random order and separated by at least 24 hours of the CS, 2) two sets of interval training (repetitions of 400 m) until the exhaustion in random order, with minimum interval of 24 hours, including: series with intensity equivalent to 95% of CS (VC95) and series intensity equivalent to 100% of CS (CS100). Analysis of high speed radially rotating high-temperature heat pipes

Internal convective cooling is a method by which components, such as gas turbine blades, are protected from damage caused by elevated temperatures. Heat pipes are structures that transport and dissipate large quantities of pressurized thermal energy. The thermal energy is transported from a heat source to a thermal sink via evaporative cooling. A radially rotating high temperature heat pipe employs centrifugal force to return or drive the working saturated-vapor mixture from the condenser section to the evaporator section. A rotating heat rig is being developed at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in order to gain a better understanding of the interaction between thermal Conductivity, rotational speed, operating temperatures and thermal loads. As a part of its development, this study will focus on identifying key factors that maximize the first critical speeds on rotating heat pipe assemblies having non-uniform temperature distributions. It was found that in order to avoid reaching the first critical speed the use of double bearings should be implemented. Since the temperature of the heat pipe will be non-uniform, this will have a minimal effect on the critical speed of the rotating rig. The first phase of the construction of the rotating rig will be stable and will provide valuable test data without reaching any critical speeds.

The Relationships of Physiological and Strength Variables to Run Performances

Monitoring progress of athletes is an essential component of the training process. Collegiate distance running coaches often use field tests to assess progress because of a lack of time and resources to do laboratory testing. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the relationships between physiological and strength variables measured in a laboratory and field testing measures in collegiate distance runners. Collegiate distance runners completed a series of tests in the Sport Science laboratory at East Tennessee State University to obtain physiological and strength parameters, such as V̇ O2max and vertical jump height. The athletes then completed one of two field tests (either a 3 km time trial or a 3 minute all out run test). There were strong correlations between the laboratory measures and the field test performances. These results indicate that strength is an important factor in run performance. Also, a 3 km time trial and a 3 minute all out run test are suitable for athlete monitoring.

The current development in the field of electric machinery is focusing on high-speed electric machines. This opens also other fields related to high-speed machines. One of them are magnetic bearing systems. Tradition approach of using ball bearing brings a few problems in design dealing with friction at high speeds. Together with magnetic bearings, development is their control. Faster chips opened a new way of thinking of control and helped to evolve robust control loops. The biggest advantage of magnetic bearing is non-friction run and almost no maintenance. Compare to traditional ball bearing, a magnetic bearing system needs more space and in some applications could happen that the shaft will be twice as long. This problem can be solved designing complex system with motor and integrated magnetic bearing what leads to downsizing. In this master thesis, the design of magnetic bearing for 12kw, 45000rpm is discussed. It focuses on practical design and correlations between parameter selection. The analytical approach is used to sketch the design and optimization is done afterwards. Problem with an analytical design is that it doesn't cover all parasitic phenomenae and thus numerical modelling snd optimization are demanded. Also, the critical speed analyze is included in this thesis. The results of the work will be used for manufacturing prototype as an extension to the existing high-speed machine.
