Topological control of 3,4-connected frameworks based on the Cu2-paddle-wheel node: tbo or pto, and why?

Müller, Philipp, Grünker, Ronny, Bon, Volodymyr, Pfeffermann, Martin, Senkovska, Irena, Weiss, Manfred S., Feng, Xinliang, Kaskel, Stefan 06 April 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Two trigonal tritopic ligands with different conformational degree of freedom: conformationally labile H3tcbpa (tris((4-carboxyl)phenylduryl)amine) and conformationally obstructed H3hmbqa (4,4′,4′′-(4,4,8,8,12,12-hexamethyl-8,12-dihydro-4H-benzo[9,1]quino-lizino[3,4,5,6,7-defg]acridine-2,6,10-triyl)tribenzoic acid) are assembled with square-planar paddle-wheel nodes with the aim of selective engineering of the frameworks with tbo and pto underlying net topologies. In the case of H3tcbpa, both topological types were obtained forming non-interpenetrated MOFs namely DUT-63 (tbo) and DUT-64 (pto). Whereas synthesis of DUT-63 proceeds under typical conditions, formation of DUT-64 requires an additional topology directing reagent (topological modifier). Solvothermal treatment of the conformationally hindered H3hmbqa ligand with the Cu-salt results exclusively in DUT-77 material, based on the single pto net. The possibility to insert the salen based metallated pillar ligand into networks with pto topology post-synthetically results in DUT-78 and DUT-79 materials (both ith-d) and opens new horizons for post-synthetic insertion of catalytically active metals within the above-mentioned topological type of frameworks.

Etude des propriétés diélectriques et structurales de monocristaux et céramiques de structure TTB / Study of dielectric and structural properties of single crystals and ceramics structure TTB

Heijboer, Pierre 20 June 2014 (has links)
The present work deals with Ba2LnNb4O15 (Ln = La ou Nd) niobates crystallizing with the "Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze" (TTB) structure. These researches, at the interface of chemistry and physics of dieletrics, aim at establishing structure / dielectric properties relationships. They were performed on TTB materials elaborated in ceramic and single crystal forms. Following optimization of growth parameters with an image furnace, single crystals were obtained and characterized. The results obtained suggest that composition, aperiodically modulated structure and dielectric behavior are closely tied in TTBs. Meanwhile, two new ceramic solid solutions with different substitutions schemes were investigated, deepening the insight on crystal-chemistry and ferroelectricity of TTBs. These solid solutions exhibit a relaxor-ferroelectric crossover, an original behaviour previously observed in solid solutions derived from the same family of TTB niobates. Advanced physical characterization (ferro-, pyro- and piezoelectric measurements, polarization loops), and composition/temperature resolved structural studies, allowed for the determination of a dielectric phase diagrams showing the presence of a metastable ferroelectric state. Finally, the existence of a two-dimensional structural modulation in single crystals and ceramics has been confirmed, and the whole set of experimental results points towards its implication in the original dielectric behavior observed in these TTBs.

Perovskite-related and trigonal RBaCo₄O₇-based oxide cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells

Kim, Young Nam, 1974- 06 February 2012 (has links)
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer the advantages of (i) employing less expensive catalysts compared to the expensive Pt catalyst used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells and (ii) directly using hydrocarbon fuels without requiring external fuel reforming due to the high operating temperature. However, the conventional high operating temperatures of 800 - 1000 °C lead to interfacial reactions and thermal expansion mismatch among the components and limitations in the choice of electrode and interconnect materials. These problems have prompted a lowering of the operating temperature to an intermediate range of 500 - 800 °C, but the poor oxygen reduction reaction kinetics of the conventional La[subscript 1-x]Sr[subscript x]MnO₃ perovskite cathode remains a major obstacle for the intermediate temperature SOFC. In this regard, cobalt-containing oxides with perovskite or perovskite-related structures have been widely investigated, but they suffer from large thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) mismatch with the electrolytes. With an aim to lower the TEC and maximize the electrochemical performance, this dissertation focuses on perovskite-related and trigonal RBaCo₄O₇-based oxide cathode materials. First, the effect of M = Fe and Cu in the perovskite-related layered LnBaCo₂₋xMxO₊[delta] (Ln = Nd and Gd) oxides has been investigated. The Fe and Cu substitutions lower the polarization resistance and offer fuel cell performance comparable to that of La[subscript 1-x]Sr[subscript x]CoO₃₋[delta] perovskite due to improved chemical stability with the electrolyte and a better matching of the TEC with those of standard electrolytes. Second, the perovskite-related intergrowth oxides Ln(Sr,Ca)₃Fe₁.₅Co₁.₅O₀ and La₁.₈₅Sr₁.₁₅Cu[subscript 2-x]Co[subscript x]O[subscript 6 +delta] and their composites with gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) have been investigated. The electrical conductivity, TEC, and catalytic activity increase with increasing Co content. The composite cathodes exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance due to lower TEC and increased triple-phase boundary. Third, RBa(Co,Zn)₄O₇ (R = Y, Ca, and In) oxides with a trigonal structure and tetrahedral-site Con+ ions have been investigated. The chemical instability normally encountered with this class of oxides has been overcome by appropriate cationic substitutions as in (Y₀.₅Ca₀.₅)Ba(Co₂.₅Zn₁.₅)O₇ and (Y₀.₅In₀.₅)BaCo₃ZnO₇. With an ideal matching of TEC with those of standard electrolytes, the RBa(Co,Zn)₄O₇ (R = Y, Ca, and In) + GDC composite cathodes exhibit low polarization resistance and electrochemical performance comparable to that of perovskite oxides. / text

Le fer dans les smectites : une approche par synthèses minérales / Iron in smectites : a mineral synthesis approach

Baron, Fabien 06 September 2016 (has links)
Iron-rich smectites named nontronite are playing a great role in lot of biogeochemical processes at the Earth's surface. To better understand these processes a characterization of iron status in nontronites is required. Spectral iron features in the nontronite structure were studied by infrared (IR), Mössbauer, and XPS spectroscopies. IR characteristic fingerprints of Fe(III) allowed to obtain a detailed overview of the crystal-chemistry of this minerals, notably a robust estimation of the tetrahedral [4]Fe(III) content of the nontronite. This study was possible thanks to an experimental approach using hydrothermal synthesis (150°C) of a series of nontronites with a wide range of [4]Fe(III) content. These syntheses allowed to assess the link between the crystal-chemistry of synthetic nontronites and the aqueous speciation of Si, Fe, and Na. The aqueous speciation calculations indicated that the increase in anionic species H3SiO4-(aq) and H2SiO42-(aq) linked to the increase in pH, favored the incorporation of Fe(III) in the tetrahedral sites of nontronites. The stability of nontronites versus time was also studied. A mineral transformation was evidenced with the formation of the aegirine and hematite through the dissolution of nontronite. These results revealed that the synthetic nontronite are transitional in this experimental syntheses.

Atomic and electronic structure of complex metal oxides during electrochemical reaction with lithium

Griffith, Kent Joseph January 2018 (has links)
Lithium-ion batteries have transformed energy storage and technological applications. They stand poised to convert transportation from combustion to electric engines. The discharge/charge rate is a key parameter that determines battery power output and recharge time; typically, operation is on the timescale of hours but reducing this would improve existing applications and open up new possibilities. Conventionally, the rate at which a battery can operate has been improved by synthetic strategies to decrease the solid-state diffusion length of lithium ions by decreasing particle sizes down to the nanoscale. In this work, a different approach is taken toward next-generation high-power and fast charging lithium-ion battery electrode materials. The phenomenon of high-rate charge storage without nanostructuring is discovered in niobium oxide and the mechanism is explained in the context of the structure–property relationships of Nb2O5. Three polymorphs, T-Nb2O5, B-Nb2O5, and H-Nb2O5, take bronze-like, rutile-like, and crystallographic shear structures, respectively. The bronze and crystallographic shear compounds, with unique electrochemical properties, can be described as ordered, anion-deficient nonstoichiometric defect structures derived from ReO3. The lessons learned in niobia serve as a platform to identify other compounds with related structural motifs that apparently facilitate high-rate lithium insertion and extraction. This leads to the synthesis, characterisation, and electrochemical evaluation of the even more complicated composition–structure–property relationships in ternary TiO2–Nb2O5 and Nb2O5–WO3 phases. Advanced structural characterisation including multinuclear solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, density functional theory, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, operando high-rate X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction is conducted throughout to understand the evolution of local and long-range atomic structure and changes in electronic states.
