Managing the teaching of life orientation by principals at selected former model C secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela MetropoleOosthuizen, Willem Cronje 06 1900 (has links)
Life Orientation, a core subject of the South African secondary school curriculum since 1996, is still not taught successfully in the majority of secondary schools. This study was conducted in former Model C secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole in order to identify challenges and problems with regard to the management of the teaching of the subject. If the subject were managed properly by principals the Departmental outcomes would have been achieved and problems would not have existed.
In this study the managerial challenges of the teaching of Life Orientation have been identified by means of mixed method research, in terms of the four main management tasks, namely leading, planning, organising and controlling. The views of principals were obtained through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data was synthesised, multi-dimensional management problems were identified and recommendations were made with regard to managing the important subject of Life Orientation. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. This research explores the impact of curriculum changes on primary school teachers at Seshego Circuit, Limpopo Province. It focuses on issues that influence teachers implementing curriculum changes. Impact of curriculum changes was examined. Principals and teachers were the respondents. The study confirmed several consequences of curriculum change. In-service training is recommended to assist the necessary adjustments to curriculum changes. Sufficient time for training is required to avoid covering an excessive amount of work during too short a time. This results in confusion and discontent. Training enables teachers to feel confident and competent. Their task becomes rewarding for them. Curriculum changes are intended for the benefit of learners and teachers. Teachers should not be discouraged when they encounter some of the more challenging impacts of curriculum changes. Attitudes should also be motivated in subjects such as Mathematics. Managing curriculum implementation at selected primary schools in the Sekhukhune District, Limpopo ProvinceNtuli, Lesheleba Tiny 08 October 2019 (has links)
The transition from apartheid education to the present education system in South Africa caused a myriad of challenges pertaining to curriculum implementation and management. Therefore, this study was aimed at exploring the extent to which School Management Teams (SMTs) were able to manage curriculum implementation in primary schools within Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Province in South Africa after the inception of the contemporary curriculum, CAPS. The study focused primarily on the SMTs, which comprise the principal, deputy principal, Heads of Departments, subject heads, and senior teachers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of SMTs in terms of curriculum management in primary schools.
A qualitative research approach was chosen, employing data collection methods which included individual interviews, focus group interviews, non-participant observation and documents analysis. Therefore, this study is embedded in a constructivist or interpretivists paradigm which is used to understand and describe human nature. A phenomenological model of naturalistic inquiry categories was used to describe the meanings of lived experiences.
Instructional leadership and classical management theories were used as a lens for interpreting aspects about the management of curriculum implementation. Purposive sampling was used to select information-rich participants; the SMTs because they were considered to be knowledgeable and informative concerning the management of curriculum implementation in schools. Sekhukhune District consists of five local municipalities. One primary school was purposefully selected from each local municipality. Thus, five primary schools were selected for the purpose of this study.

The study revealed that for effective management of curriculum implementation, the SMTs need to incorporate both management and leadership constructs in their application. Without appropriate leadership and management, effective teaching and learning cannot prevail in schools. But some schools in similar circumstances managed to achieve above this pass percentage. The study was conducted in three purposely selected public schools that each surpassed the 60 percent overall pass in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in the Pinetown District, KwaZulu-Natal. The study employed a qualitative approach and was located in the interpretive paradigm. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The identities of all respondents were protected. Upon analysis of results, several measures the schools applied emerged. Managers' experiences in the implementation of mathematical literacy at technical and vocational education and training colleges in the Western CapeHassan, Shaik Mohammad 02 1900 (has links)
Mathematics has always been a problem at schools, colleges and universities and to address this problem the South African government has introduced a new subject called Mathematical Literacy into schools and colleges. Since this subject places the emphasis on real-life contexts, there has been a special focus on its management at schools and colleges so that its implementation is done in an efficient way. This study therefore focuses on the experiences and interactions of managers of this new subject and how their leadership can improve performance in it.
In addition to the literature review, an empirical investigation based on a qualitative approach and involving semi-structured interviews with managers of three public TVET colleges in the Western Cape was conducted to collect data. The other method used was the analysis of documents relevant to the study.
The research found that managers of Mathematical Literacy have varying experiences in both their roles and the implementation of the subject. They also face varied challenges in relation to lecturers and students although there are also similarities regarding these at the different colleges in the study. The strategies of instructional leadership in intervention methods to improve performance in the subject which are encouraged by managers also differ, and some have better results than others. Various methods to empower lecturers are recommended. The purpose of this study was to undertake an investigation into the investigation into the management of Grade 3 mathematics curriculum in a Transformational leadership Approach in Johannesburg East public school which is in D9 District of the Gauteng Department of Education.
The role of the Leader in the school is to make sure the educative function us carried out to the desired level. Curriculum management referred to the provision of effective leadership and supervision by HOD's and other education managers of the activities of teaching staff in a school in order to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency with which the curriculum is delivered. The managers must ensure that quality teaching and learning is being provided and it is the responsibility of all education managers.
A qualitative approach was undertaken to enable the researcher to explore the experiences, feelings and perceptions of the educators, Heads of department (HODs) and Deputy Principals to have a wider and richer assortment of current, valid and relevant data of how management of Grade 3 Mathematics in curriculum in Transformational Leadership approach. The quality of teaching in schools strongly influences levels of pupil motivation and achievement, Fullan (2001). The managers in schools has been consistently alluded to as the most significant factor in the success and quality of the school’s improvement process (Petersen, 2001: 159)
The data collected for the research was analysed by using qualitative techniques and the findings showed that through the responses from the educators, Heads of Department, Principals showed that not enough support was given by the Department, workshops presented were not enough and educators , HOD and Deputy Principals were unable to implement as required. Educators felt that they did not receive proper and enough support from the SMT as the SMT was not fully equipped to support them.
The HOD and Deputies responded that they felt limited in taking part in the Grade 3 mathematics curriculum transformational approach as educators were confined to a classroom management style of thinking. The deputy principal, the heads of department and subjects heads in primary schools as formal leaders, all have crucial responsibilities in assist the principal in meeting the school’s instructional goals. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. The research focuses on the implementation of Outcomes-based Education (OBE) from a management perspective, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. This being a largely rural province, teachers are often un- or underqualified and in-service training for curriculum implementation is constrained by logistical problems such as vast distances, lack of physical facilities and resources and language barriers. In spite of extensive socio-political changes since 1994, these barriers remain. A thorough study of the literature provides an understanding of the foundations of OBE in the light of a need for relevant education in a democratic South Africa. The purpose, forms, characteristics and key elements of an outcomes-based approach are described, as well as the role of the teacher in curriculum implementation. OBE is a futuristic education approach embodying a radical shift from the traditional content-based approach followed in the previous education dispensation. The initial curriculum aimed at realising the new OBE approach, was known as Curriculum 2005 and is described according to its key elements. Thereafter, the debate surrounding Curriculum 2005 and the problems associated with its implementation are identified. The Revised National Curriculum Statement, produced after the review of Curriculum 2005, is outlined and the roles of the teacher, principal and district officials in terms of the new curricula are then dealt with. Attention is then given to the roles of district officials, principals and teachers in managing the curriculum since all three role players have crucial roles to play at district, school and classroom levels. This theoretical discussion provides the framework for the qualitative study in determining the perceptions of these role players in the implementation of OBE in the Eastern Cape. Data was collected by means of individual and focus group interviews with a small sample of district officials, principals and teachers, selected through a combination of judgement and convenience sampling. An examination of documents was also carried out. The findings suggest factors that encouraged or hampered the implementation of OBE at district, school and classroom levels.
