Barriers and Facilitating Factors in Delaying School Start Times

Fitzpatrick, Julia Marie, Fitzpatrick, Julia Marie January 2016 (has links)
The majority of adolescents in the United States do not obtain the recommended amount of sleep each night. While the reasons for this are multi-factorial, early school start times effect the amount of sleep an adolescent is able to achieve each night. Biological rhythms influence adolescents to stay up later and wake up later in the morning. School districts across the country are taking notice of adolescent sleep research and delaying their start times to better match adolescents' biological rhythms. However, the majority of the schools in the United States continue to start earlier than the recommended 8:30am start time, including the school district targeted in this project. The purpose of this project was to collect data from administrators whose schools had undergone a delay in school start time on the barriers and facilitating factors they found during the implementation. This information was then shared with the local school district.

The Determinants of Success in Venture Capital Finance

Bartkus, James 21 May 2005 (has links)
The determinants of success in venture capital financing are explored in this manuscript. 1247 venture capital funds formed over a twenty-year time period are empirically analyzed with results that support theoretical research from extant finance and economics literature. Venture capitalists' choices of portfolio size, distance from portfolio firms, location, and to some extent, level of diversification in their investment portfolio, are all significant factors in explaining the success rates of venture capital funds. These results are robust even when controlling for other characteristics of venture funds and entrepreneurial firms, such as the stage of development and industry of the portfolio firms, which may affect success rates of venture capitalist portfolios.

Assumptions, complexities and contradictions:

Olofsson, Justine Judith Felicia 26 October 2006 (has links)
Faculty of humanities School of Arts 9407481e justine.ol@absamail.co.za / This research report involves an evaluation of a street children art programme delivered by Imbali Visual Literacy Project a non-governmental organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Little attention has been given to evaluating art programmes aimed at ‘marginalised youth’. This marks a gap in current theorising in the area. The programme is presented in terms of the “progressive” and “liberal democratic” ethos that is identified as informing Imbali’s approach. This approach is critiqued by drawing on Grant Kester’s ideas of ‘dialogical aesthetics’. A new participatory and collaborative model for initiating art programmes aimed at marginalised youth is proposed. This model draws on Kester’s ideas as well as the value Imbali places on art-making processes. It is advocated that participants on such programmes should be encouraged to play an active role in taking responsibility for their own development through both art-making and dialogue. If programmes are conceived of in this way it is claimed that there is more of a chance they can effect sustainable change and development.

Engagement in Head Start Services Among Diverse Immigrant Families

Leong, Anne Elizabeth Day January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Stephanie Berzin / In industrial organizational psychology, there is a well-established link between worker job satisfaction and worker engagement in their job. Similarly, research has found an association between a parent’s satisfaction with their child’s education services and a parent’s level of involvement in their child’s education. Levels of family involvement in their child’s education as early as preschool have been correlated with positive academic and behavioral outcomes throughout childhood. This line of research posits that families who are satisfied with their child’s education services are more likely to be involved in their child’s education and, consequentially, their children are more likely to have positive academic and behavioral outcomes. According to the theories proposed by industrial organization psychology and education research, this dissertation explores the potential links between satisfaction and involvement in Head Start services among U.S. born and immigrant families. To begin to understand the potential connection between satisfaction with services, engagement in services and the unique experiences of the immigrant communities in Head Start, this collection of three studies seeks to employ a mix of primary quantitative data and secondary quantitative data to examine satisfaction with and involvement in services among U.S. born and immigrant families in Head Start. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. International Growth Strategies for Start-Up and Micro Companies

Noller, Sarah, Han, Xu January 2009 (has links)
sonami AG is a company that is located in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was founded in 2007. Since then it didn’t gain many customers and it is questionable how long the?company will be able to survive with having that few customers. In order to get rid of the current situation and to achieve a sustainable expansion strategy in the long run sonami asked us for help. The question thus is; how would an international expansion strategy look like. In order to answer this question a case study approach was used. Four successful micro companies were interviewed and asked about their international strategy and their recommendations for expanding abroad. In addition internationalization literature has been reviewed. Furthermore the concept of strategy, strategic planning and strategic management has been discussed. In the end a framework for sonami was developed. Different approaches, mixed with different recommendations and insights of the case studies were used to develop it. The result is that sonami has major problems internally, which should be solved before entering any international path. Our developed framework names several pre‐requisites that need to be fulfilled before moving on to the next step. We have tried to generate a deliberate strategy for sonami. We also recommended sonami to take advantage of opportunities given. This would however mean that sonami would then follow an emergent strategy.??

Even Start family literacy program participants' perceptions of parenting education, an integral component in family literacy programs

Chen, Chia-Yin 30 October 2006 (has links)
Parenting education, combined with adult basic education and early childhood education, makes the Even Start program a unified family literacy program which helps to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and low literacy. Research studies have shown that the Even Start program has positive effects on its participants. Even though some of the effects are not explicitly tied to parenting education, they are closely related to parenting education. This study investigated the effectiveness of parenting education as perceived by its participants. The purposes of this study were to identify Even Start program participants’ perceptions of parenting education, to explore issues related to parenting education, and to identify the impact of parenting education as perceived by the program participants. The interviewed parents considered parenting education an important component of the Even Start family literacy program. Findings in this study revealed how the participants used what they had learned in the parenting classes, incorporating their improved literacy skills to facilitate the growth of the whole family. According to the study participants, parenting classes provided a safe and comfortable environment for the parents to learn or validate their parenting practices, to identify themselves with each other, to build up a network of support system, and to practice their literacy skills in a context related to their everyday life. Since their participation in the parenting education, the study participants reported attainment of new insights about being a good parent, better communication with their children and other family members, improved education experience for their children, prolonged parenting values and practices, and improved family relationships. Using Bronfenbrenner’s ecology model to look at the family literacy program, parenting education appeared to be the linkage between all components.
