Sedimentology and tectonic history of the Eureka Sound and Beaufort formations, southern Ellesmere Island, Arctic, Canada

Riediger, Cynthia Louise January 1985 (has links)
The Eureka Sound Formation in the eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago is an Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene pre- and syn-tectonic deposit that records the uplift and segmentation of the Early Carboniferous to Tertiary Sverdrup Basin. Scattered outliers of the Eureka Sound Formation on southern Ellesmere Island rest unconformably on or are faulted against Devonian strata. In the vicinity of Vendom, Stenkul, Baumann and Sor Fiords, the Eureka Sound Formation attains a maximum thickness of 480 m and comprises a sequence of nonmarine and brackish water deposits that ranges in age from mid-Paleocene to Late Eocene. Eureka Sound strata which crop out along the shores of Stenkul Fiord are divided into four lithofacies assemblages. The stratigraphic section is composed mainly of two nonmarine assemblages which alternate throughout the sequence. Lithofacies Assemblage I consists of fining-upward sandstones which attain thicknesses of 20 m and are interpreted as fluvial deposits. Lithofacies Assemblage II comprises interbedded mudstones and coal in seams up to 8 m thick, and are interpreted as floodbasin deposits of an alluvial plain. Two marine lithofacies assemblages (III, IV) are recognized locally and constitute a minor part of the stratigraphic succession. Lithofacies Assemblage III comprises the basal strata in the study area and consists of approximately 90 m of buff-weathering mudstones and interbedded thin coals which were deposit ed in brackish lagoonal, estuarine and salt marsh environments. Lithofacies Assemblage IV occurs locally in the middle of the stratigraphic section and consists of up to 10m of white, well sorted quartz arenites and minor mudstones, which are interpreted as deposits of a barrier island system. To the northeast of Stenkul Fiord at Makinson Inlet, outliers of the Eureka Sound Formation rest unconformably on Paleozoic strata, and are in turn overlain with angular unconformity by as much as 120 m of Early Miocene fanglomerates of the Beaufort Formation. The ages of these sediments, in conjunction with ages reported from the Eureka Sound and Beaufort Formations in other parts of Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg Islands, bracket the timing of the orogenic phase of the Eurekan orogeny in the eastern Arctic as Late Eocene to Miocene. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Disability Adjusted Life Years in a Regional and Cultural Perspective. : Who Should weight the disabilities?

Gunnersen, Morten January 2006 (has links)
The concept of disability adjusted life years (DALY) came forward in the early 1990’s to be used as a measurement of the burden of disease. The DALY combines the burden with regard to premature death and years lived with a disease. Much criticism has been raised since then with regard to e.g. ethics. This thesis focuses on the lack of contextual aspects of the DALY-concept because the measurement has a universal standard for all diseases in all countries. One aim of the study is to describe how regional and cultural context influence the view of disability and therefore contradicts with the underlying approaches of the DALY-concept. The regional and cultural differences are illustrated by examples like paraple-gia. Published burden of disease studies are examined for contextual considerations. The conclusion of the analysis is that regional and cultural issues are not taken into ac-count when using the DALY-approach of health assessments in public health. The second aim of the study is to discuss who should value the life of disabled. Follow-ing the transition of health, different views of fair health have developed and the need of health care. Underlying this assessment is an implicit valuation of disabilities among lay-people and health care professionals. If one uses DALY as a general measurement for the burden of disease and prioritising resources for disabled it is discussed who should be involved in the calculation of disability weights and a model for the collabo-ration is described. The conclusion is that lay people must be involved in a facilitated process. Overall the thesis show that the development of DALY is a serious attempt to give a simple tool for understanding and prioritise the complex challenges in public health. At present, an agenda for development of contextual DALY’s is needed.

An unjust legacy: A critical study of the political campaigns of William Andrews Clark, 1888-1901.

Pitts, Stanley Thomas 05 1900 (has links)
In a time of laissez-faire government, monopolistic businesses and political debauchery, William Andrews Clark played a significant role in the developing West, achieving financial success rivaling Jay Gould, George Hearst, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan. Clark built railroads, ranches, factories, utilities, and developed timber and water resources, and was internationally known as a capitalist, philanthropist and art collector. Nonetheless, Clark is unjustly remembered for his bitter twelve-year political battle with copper baron Marcus Daly that culminated in a scandalous senatorial election in January 1899. The subsequent investigation was a judicial travesty based on personal hatred and illicit tactics. Clark's political career had national implications and lasting consequences. His enemies shaped his legacy, and for one hundred years historians have unquestioningly accepted it.

Reexamining the 1950s American Housewife: How Ladies Home Journal Challenged Domestic Expectations During the Postwar Period

Bonaparte, Margaret 01 January 2014 (has links)
My thesis examines the role that Ladies Home Journal played in challenging the ideals of domesticity that emerged in the postwar period in the United States. Originally founded in 1883, Ladies Home Journal emerged from World War II as the most popular and highly circulated women’s magazine. Husband and wife duo Bruce and Beatrice Gould served as co-editors-in-chief from 1935 to 1962, and populated the magazine with numerous ambitious and talented female writers and editors. Many of these female staff members also married and had children, while maintaining their careers. During an era where employees discriminated against women in the workplace, Ladies Home Journal employed women and published numerous articles supporting women in the workplace. In 1963, Betty Friedan claimed that women’s magazines only perpetuated the idealized, feminine housewife, but I argue that her argument oversimplifies the complexities women’s magazines represented during the 1950s. Divided intro three chapters, I analyze the shifting working conditions for women between the 1940s and 1950s, then unearth the working culture of Ladies Home Journal during the postwar period through an analysis of the editors, writers, and articles. Lastly, I examine three female journalists, Dorothy Thompson, Betty Hannah Hoffman, and Maureen Daly who all regularly contributed to the Journal.

Of the epicuticular wax of the leaves of PHB were extracted mixtures of three hydrocarbons: heptacosane, hentriacontane and tritriacontane, and mixture of ethyl ester, as main constituent, the ethyl hexadecanoate. Of the resin of PHU were obtained two binary mixtures of triterpenes pentacyclics of the series oleanane/ursane: 3-oxoolean-12-ene and 3-oxours-12-ene; 3Ã-hydroxyolean-12-ene and 3a-hydroxyurs-12-ene; three triterpenes tetracyclics of the series tirucallane: 3-oxotirucalla-8,24-dien-21-oic acid, 3ahydroxytirucalla- 8,24-dien-21-oic acid and the 3a-hydroxytirucalla-7,24-dien-21-oic acid and one triterpene pentacyclic of the series friedelane: D:A-friedoolean-3-one. From the essential oil of PHU, were isolated two monoterpenes: the terpinolene and the p-cymen-8-ol. The essential oil of the resins of PHB, PHU and PHH, presented as main constituent a-pinene (21.28%), terpinolene (42.31%) e p-cymene (31.50%), respectively. Those oils showed biological activity to the microorganism: Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniar, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Nycobacterium phlei. Specifically, the essential oil of PHB was analyzed his activity against larva of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, presenting CL50 = 270.32 ppm, considered donât activate. Some reactions were performed with the intention of structural proof, as well as, to detach, in part, the chemistry. Finally, was verified the possibility of using the immobilized enzymes of the resin of PHB as biocatalyst, in acetylation reaction.

The ecology and management of feral pigs in the 'wet-dry' tropics of the Northern Territory

Caley, Peter, n/a January 1993 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with studying aspects of the ecology of feral pigs in the wet-dry tropics of the Northern Territory. The data are needed for use in the management of feral pigs to reduce their agricultural and potential epidemiological impact. Particular emphasis is placed on collecting data needed for modelling foot-and-mouth disease in feral pigs, estimating agricultural damage caused by pigs and evaluating control techniques. All fieldwork was conducted in the Douglas Daly district of the Northern Territory.

The Ecological Economics of Boulding's Spaceship Earth

Spash, Clive L. January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The work of Kenneth Boulding is sometimes cited as being foundational to the understanding of how the economy interacts with the environment and particularly of relevance to ecological economists. The main reference made in this regard is to his seminal essay using the metaphor of planet Earth as a spaceship. In this paper that essay and related work is placed both within historical context of the environmental movement and developments in the thought on environment-economy interactions. The writing by Boulding in this area is critically reviewed and discussed in relationship to the work of his contemporaries, also regarded as important for the ecological economics community, such as Georegescu-Roegen, Herman Daly and K. William Kapp. This brings out the facts that Boulding did not pursue his environmental concerns, wrote little on the subject, had a techno-optimist tendency, disagreed with his contemporaries and preferred to develop an evolutionary economics approach. Finally, a sketch is offered of how the ideas in the Spaceship Earth essay relate to current understanding within social ecological economics. The essay itself, while offering many thought provoking insights within the context of its time, also has flaws both of accuracy and omission. The issues of power, social justice, institutional and social relationships are ones absent, but also ones which Boulding, near the end of his life, finally recognised as key to addressing the growing environmental crises.
