A Framework for Stochastic Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Beams Affected by Reinforcement Corrosion

Baingo, Darek 16 July 2012 (has links)
Corrosion of reinforcing bars is the major cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and many coastal regions around the world. This deterioration leads to a loss of serviceability and functionality and ultimately affects the structural safety. The objective of this research is to formulate and implement a general stochastic finite element analysis (SFEA) framework for the time-dependent reliability analysis of RC beams with corroding flexural reinforcement. The framework is based on the integration of nonlinear finite element and reliability analyses through an iterative response surface methodology (RSM). Corrosion-induced damage is modelled through the combined effects of gradual loss of the cross-sectional area of the steel reinforcement and the reduction bond between steel and concrete for increasing levels of corrosion. Uncertainties in corrosion rate, material properties, and imposed actions are modelled as random variables. Effective implementation of the framework is achieved by the coupling of commercial finite element and reliability software. Application of the software is demonstrated through a case study of a simply-supported RC girder with tension reinforcement subjected to the effects of uniform (general) corrosion, in which two limit states are considered: (i) a deflection serviceability limit state and (ii) flexural strength ultimate limit state. The results of the case study show that general corrosion leads to a very significant decrease in the reliability of the RC beam both in terms of flexural strength and maximum deflections. The loss of strength and serviceability was shown to be predominantly caused by the loss of bond strength, whereas the gradual reduction of the cross-sectional area of tension reinforcement was found to be insignificant. The load-deflection response is also significantly affected by the deterioration of bond strength (flexural strength and stiffness). The probability of failure at the end of service life, due to the effects of uniform corrosion-induced degradation, is observed to be approximately an order of magnitude higher than in the absence of corrosion. Furthermore, the results suggest that flexural resistance of corroded RC beams is controlled by the anchorage (bond) of the bars and not by the yielding of fully bonded tensile reinforcement at failure. This is significant since the end regions can be severely corroded due to chloride, moisture, and oxygen access at connections and expansion joints. The research strongly suggests that bond damage must be considered in the assessment of the time-dependent reliability of RC beams subjected to general corrosion.

Deterioration mechanisms of historic cement renders and concrete

Griffin, Isobel Margaret January 2013 (has links)
Since the introduction of Portland cement in the early nineteenth century the number of buildings constructed from concrete or using cement mortars and renders has grown exponentially, and cement is one of the most common building materials in use today. Consequently a significant proportion of the built heritage contains cementitious materials. The relative youth of these buildings means that less research has been undertaken to understand how and why they deteriorate than for traditional buildings, and that the development of appropriate conservation methods and techniques is less advanced. The primary aim of this research was to understand the causes and mechanisms of some of the types of deterioration commonly found in historic concrete and cement buildings and structures, with reference to the Second World War reinforced concrete and cement-rendered buildings at East Fortune airfield in East Lothian, Scotland. Additional aims were to investigate the efficacy of the building repairs and maintenance regimes undertaken to date, and to make recommendations for the future conservation of the buildings. East Fortune airfield contains a number of cement-rendered brick masonry buildings and a reinforced concrete air raid shelter. The initial visual survey identified several types of deterioration, from which the blistering and flaking of the render; the cracking and delamination of the render; and the spalling of the concrete in the air raid shelter were selected for further research. The research included time lapse photography, non-destructive testing, environmental monitoring and the physical, chemical and petrographic characterisation of the building materials. Hypotheses regarding the causes of deterioration were tested in the laboratory, for example with linear variable displacement transducer measurements, and modelled using crack propagation theories and models for water transport through porous media. It is demonstrated that the blistering and flaking of the render is caused by shale aggregate particles, which undergo sufficient expansion during freeze-thaw cycles to crack the surrounding render. This phenomenon is termed ‘pop-outs’ in the concrete literature. The more catastrophic cracking and delamination of the renders is also due to freeze-thaw cycling, which is shown to cause significant damage provided the moisture content of the render is above a certain threshold level. This type of deterioration has occurred at an accelerated rate for some of the modern render repairs, due to an inadequate understanding of the properties of the original and repair materials. In particular, the properties of the bricks are critical to the performance of the cement renders, and it is found that the sorptivity of historic bricks may vary considerably depending upon the orientation of the brick. Finally, the diagnosis for the air raid shelter is that the corrosion of the steel reinforcements is caused by high levels of chlorides present within the raw materials used to make the pre-cast concrete sections. The results of the investigations are used to suggest building conservation solutions for this particular site. Furthermore, since the deterioration mechanisms investigated are common for historic cement and concrete, the findings are relevant to many other sites. The over-arching methodology used to investigate the deterioration at the site and the methodologies developed to test particular hypotheses are also applicable for other investigations of historic building materials. There is much about this research that is innovative and new. The work on render cracking compares the results of dilation tests on cementitious and ceramic materials, which has not been done previously, and the pop-outs diagnosed in the work on render flaking have rarely, if ever, been reported for cement renders. The modelling work undertaken to quantify the stresses produced by the pop-outs and to explain the inclined crack formation patterns is entirely original. The use of petrography to diagnose causes of render failure is described in the literature, but this is one of very few case studies to be written up, and the work on the air raid shelter constitutes the only formal investigation of this type of Stanton shelter.

Growth and Deterioration

Hine, Brooke A. 01 January 2004 (has links)
I use porcelain clay because it allows me to focus on the subtle color shifts between white, beige, and gray. The forms I make in clay are associated with tangled roots, naked tree branches, hollow logs, and bones. I reveal this with a dense mass of curvilinear hollow forms that stack into a rhythmic linkage. They twist and turn, relying on gravity to dictate their structure within the installation. The ends of some are closed while others remain open to expose their interior. The tearing and perforations on the surface of each piece are employed to emphasize deterioration. In opposition to the tearing and perforations, I also add concave lines to the surface creating a flowing moving force. The surface is both visually active and smooth, allowing the eye to roam and focus on specific areas. I'm also working with the accumulation of pieces to communicate growth. The individual pieces rest on one another, growing into an interlocking structure. The pedestal is a formal presentation that is specific to the space. For this installation, I wanted to make the work monumental by elevating an accumulation of pieces. When walking around the artwork, there's an opening in the platform for one person to walk in and be surrounded by the two sides of the piece. The work is above eye level and surrounds the viewer at both sides. I want people to view the mass from the outside, but to also have an experience from the inside.

Condições de armazenamento e conservação do potencial fisiológico de sementes de diferentes cultivares de amendoim / Seed storability of different peanut cultivars

Sarto, Danielle Otte Carrara Castan 13 March 2019 (has links)
The conservation of the physiological potential of peanut seeds during storage is considered of great importance by seed companies, since the chemical composition of the seeds which are rich in lipids, combined with inadequate storage conditions can directly interfere in the seed longevity. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the conservation of the physiological potential of peanut seeds stored in different environments, seeking to identify possible physiological changes during this period. Two peanut cultivars (IAC OL3 and RUNNER IAC 886) were used, each represented by three seed batches produced in different regions and stored for 9 months in the following conditions: Cold and dry chamber (11°C / 24% relative humidity - RH), dry chamber (19°C / 40% RH), and natural environment (24°C / 66% RH), preceded or not by the threshing. Seed performance was evaluated in quarterly seasons through germination and vigor tests (traditional accelerated aging and saturated NaCl solution, electric conductivity, emergence of field seedlings, computerized analysis of seedlings images - SVIS®) and test of sanity. The activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, malate dehydrogenase and esterase was also determined by the electrophoresis technique. The data were submitted, separately for each cultivar, to the analysis of variance, in a completely randomized design (laboratory tests) and in randomized blocks (field tests); the means were compared by the Tukey\'s test (α ≤ 0.05). It was found that the physiological potential of seeds of IAC OL3 and RUNNER IAC 886 is preserved when stored in a cold and dry chamber, being the water content safe to reduce the deterioration rate of the seeds both inside the pods and threshed, during storage, both cultivars, is 4.4%. The storage sub-optimal conditions of temperature and relative humidity as the natural environment, promotes greater negative interference in the speed of deterioration of the seeds of the threshing system. Changes in enzyme systems of superoxide dismutase and catalase identifying the progress of deterioration of peanut seeds at different storage conditions preceded or not the threshing operation.

Qualidade e durabilidade das estruturas de concreto armado: aspectos relativos ao projeto / Quality and durability of reinforced concrete structures: design approach

Brandão, Ana Maria da Silva 16 April 1998 (has links)
In the last years, it has been observed a great concern about the unsatisfactory performance of the constructions. Some studies on the inefficiency of these constructions point, among other causes, to faulty designs, along with the use of inadequate materials. This work draws the attention to quality and durability of reinforced concrete structures, concentrating on design aspects. The main approach consists of ensuring the structure quality by improving the respective structural design quality. This improvement can be achieved, basically, by two ways: through implementation of a quality assurance system for structural design and by means of appropriate design specifications. Thus, this work gives guidance for the development of structural design quality control and also presents a study on the behavior of reinforced concrete subjected to aggressive environments. This study forms a basis for the presentation of some durability design criteria, which is largely related to the structure quality. Finally, some practical applications of the concepts and procedures covered in the text are presented, aiming primarily at demonstrating the application of the methodology proposed for structural design quality control.

Bulk diffusion of high performance concrete specimens exposed to different levels of sodium chloride and seawater

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance to chloride penetration of specimens made with three base compositions (three different supplementary cementitious materials) and water to cementitious ratios of 0.35, 0.41, or 0.47. The specimens were subjected to bulk diffusion test or full immersion. The mixes were exposed to 0.1 M, 0.6 M, or 2.8 M sodium chloride solution for different periods of time. Also, partially immersed specimens were exposed to indoor and outdoor exposures (tidal, splash, barge). Chloride concentration profiles were obtained and the apparent diffusion coefficient was calculated. The skin effect was found only on some chloride profiles exposed to 0.1 M sodium chloride solution. The chloride binding capacity was calculated; specimens with 20% Fly Ash and 8% Silica Fume had the highest binding capacity (70.99%). The apparent diffusivity coefficient was found to be dependent on the curing regime as well as the water to cement ratio. The correlation between effective resistivity and apparent diffusion coefficient was determined. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Corrosion Propagation of Rebar Embedded in High Performance Concrete

Unknown Date (has links)
The FDOT has been using supplementary cementitious materials while constructing steel reinforced concrete marine bridge structures for over 3 decades. Previous findings indicated that such additions in concrete mix makes the concrete more durable. To better understand corrosion propagation of rebar in high performance concrete: mature concrete samples that were made (2008/2009) with Portland cement, a binary mix, a ternary mix and recently prepared (April 2016 with 50% OPC + 50% slag and 80% OPC + 20% Fly ash) concrete samples were considered. None of these concretes had any admixed chloride to start with. An accelerated chloride transport process was used to drive chloride ions into the concrete so that chlorides reach and exceed thechloride threshold at the rebar surface and initiate corrosion. Electrochemical measurements were taken at regular intervals (during and after the electro-migration process) to observe the corrosion propagation in each sample. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Experimental evaluation of cement stucco surfacing material (CSSM) removal for reducing particulates in air

Unknown Date (has links)
Every year millions of construction workers are exposed to dust in levels that create a hazard to them (Fundukian, 2011). Their environment is contaminated by activities such as cutting, chipping, grinding and sanding building materials. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) refers to this general collection of building materials debris and fine particulates as nuisance dust. Some of the particles in nuisance dust possess properties that make them especially hazardous, such as their shape or specific gravity. It has been found by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that inhalation of quantities of silica dust above the permissible exposure limit (15.0 mg/m3) causes a deterioration of the outside lining of the lung. This research seeks to limit this exposure by a pretreatment process using acid application and then absorbed moisture content that reduces airborne particulate during the removal of cement stucco surfacing materials. Successful pretreatment would allow removal of CSSM from substrates such that the release of airborne particulates does not exceed the permissible exposure limits (PEL) found in the 29 CFR-Table Z-3 for mining applications (15-mg/m3). / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015 / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Avaliação do potencial antimicrobiano e antioxidante do extrato de jabuticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) microencapsulado adicionado em linguiça frescal e mortadela / Evaluation of antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of microencapsulated jabuticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) extract added to fresh sausage and mortadella

Baldin, Juliana Cristina 25 February 2016 (has links)
The objective of this study was to use jabuticaba extract microencapsulated as dye and evaluate its antimicrobial and antioxidant potential in fresh sausage and mortadella, replacing the traditionally used dye cochineal carmine. The first step was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of aqueous and microencapsulated jabuticaba extract. The extract was obtained from the the waste of fruit pulping, with subsequent dehydration (microencapsulation) by spray dryer using maltodextrin as carrier agent. The characterization was carried out by determining and identifying anthocyanins by high-performance liquid chromatography (CLAE) and mass spectrometry (MS), determining the antioxidant capacity by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, reducing capacity of iron in plasma (FRAP) and antioxidant activity by DPPH radical. Physical characteristics evaluated in the aqueous extract were pH value and soluble solids content. The antimicrobial potential was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella Enteritidis. Microencapsulated jabuticaba extract (MJE) was used for the preparation of fresh sausage and mortadella in two different concentrations: 2 and 4% EJM for fresh sausage and 2% for mortadella. The fresh sausage (pork) and mortadella (beef and mechanically separated meat chicken) were evaluated for stability during refrigerated storage at 1±1 and 4±1°C for 15 and 56 days, respectively. The products were characterized for centesimal composition and were carried out physical-chemical, microbiological and sensorial analysis. The results for fresh sausage confirmed that the use of 2% and 4% EJM contributed to reduce lipid oxidation during the 15 days of storage and MJE contributed to reduce the microorganisms counts for four days when compared to the control sausage. Sensory analysis proved that 2% MJE did not compromise the majority of sensory attributes evaluated, but the darker color. It is recommended, therefore, the use of 2% MJE for producing fresh sausages. Regarding mortadella, the results did not differ when compared 2% EJM and control, attesting that the 2% EJM can be considered an interesting alternative because of the current demands for new low-cost sources and using natural pigments, what can be beneficial to health. Considering the results, it can be state that the use of jabuticaba peel from fruit processing as microencapsulated extract can represent a good alternative as a natural dye, bringing a new conception of healthier products in fresh sausage and mortadella.

Conservação de sementes de açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) / Conservation of Euterpe oleracea seeds

Nascimento, Walnice Maria Oliveira do 10 March 2006 (has links)
Seeds of Euterpe oleracea Mart. are considered recalcitrant and demand enlargement of the knowledge about the factors that interfere in its conservation. The present work aimed to verify the effects on seed moisture content and of the atmosphere temperature in the maintenance of seed quality. Seeds of cultivar BRS Pará, with moisture content of 43,4%, 37,4%, 30,3%, 26,1%, 21,0%, 15,1% and 11,9%, conditioned in polyethylene bags, were stored under controlled temperature at 20ºC, 15ºC and 10ºC, for 360 days, and submitted to periodic evaluations of the moisture content, germination, vigor and the health condition. The dehydration up to 37,4% of water does not produce immediate effects on the germination and vigour. However, after 37,4% it progressively favors the deterioration, and when reaching 15,1% the physiologic performance is annulled. After the storage, seeds with 21,0% of water or less have the germination annulled, independently of the temperature. It was verified that the association of seeds with 43,4% of water and the storage at 20ºC support the conservation of the seeds up to 270 days.
