This study investigated how school divisions in Virginia socialized new middle school principals, and the effects this socialization had on the principals' role. It also examined the effects of school division characteristics and principal traits on the selection of socialization tactics and on role outcomes. Consistent with theory, the results suggest that the choice of different socialization tactics lead to different role outcomes. Specifically, the tactics concerned mainly with the social aspects of newcomer principal adjustment were most influential in moderating levels of role conflict and role ambiguity, and to a lesser degree in determining role orientation. The results also suggest that the size and wealth of school divisions effect the selection of some socialization tactics. Further, the results suggest that the age, gender, and ethnicity of principals influence the determination of role orientation, and moderate the levels of role conflict and role ambiguity. / Ed. D.

En Chine, la croissance urbaine en périphérie des très grandes villes s'accélère dès les années 2000. La ville de Shanghai connaît alors une croissance spectaculaire qui opère de profondes mutations de ses tissus urbains. Elle devient une métropole émergente capable de moderniser sa physionomie urbaine, de mobiliser l'ensemble de son territoire municipal afin d'opérer un desserrement puis un redéploiement polycentrique de ses activités et de sa population vers ses villes nouvelles. Cette thèse de doctorat en géographie vise ainsi à saisir la transmission de modèles urbains internationaux, la production urbaine dans un contexte de forte intervention publique, ainsi que les recompositions territoriales et sociales en périphérie de Shanghai, au défi de son intégration au système métropolitain, à travers l'étude de ses villes nouvelles construites depuis 1999 dans le cadre de cinq programmes de redéploiement polycentrique. / At the beginning of the 2000's, suburban growth around Chinese big cities is accelerating. This spectacular growth greatly impacts urban fabrics. Shanghai becomes an emerging metropolis able to modernize its urban landscape, to mobilize the whole municipality territories, to operate a deconcentration then a polycentric redeployment of both activities and population towards new towns. This doctoral thesis in Geography deals with international urban pattern transmission, urban production in a context of huge public intervention, social and spatial changes in Shanghai new urban peripheries, challenging metropolitan system integration of the new towns built since 1999 in the framework of five polycentric redeployment programs.

三國之世戰事連年，社會從相對穩定的東漢時期走進亂世，地區軍事活動頻仍，為適應時代變遷，地方行政制度自然是三國政制改革中的重要一環。就此，孫吳的地方行政制度為州郡縣三級制，名稱依循東漠，但當中的細節實有不少調整，本文即選定了州郡縣行政系統、地方兵制、軍鎮督及州郡縣更為研究對象。礙於史料所限，現階段還不可能將整套孫吳地方行政制度復原，因此本文在分析孫吳制度時，乃以孫吳中央對地方(包括地方官及大族)的監控為重心。質言之，了解制度內容是研究方法，得知孫吳中央如何監控地方及其成效則為研究目的，兩者相輔相成。 / Regional military activities happened frequently during the Three Kingdoms Period. In order to adapt to the new age, all three regimes had carried out reforms on their municipal systems. Although Sun Wu had adopted the provinces(zhou)-commanderies(jun)-counties(xian) three-tier municipal system from Eastern Han Dynasty, its specifics had been adjusted. In this regard, this eassy is going to look into Sun Wu's municipal administration and military system, governors(dudu) and the low-ranking bureaucrats(li). Since the limited historical sources, the municipal system of Sun Wu cannot be restored completely at this stage. Therefore, this essay would focus on the scrutiny of municipal authorities and large families from the central government. Vermont, like many rural places in the developed world, has been the destination of many urban migrants seeking lifestyle amenities unavailable in the city. This migration has been blamed for intractable conflicts over land use governance, with newcomers pitted against long-time residents on such issues as wilderness designation, agricultural impacts and motorized recreation. How accurate, though, are these representations of political visions polarized along lines of residential status? This dissertation maps out the complexity of popular outlooks on land use governance in Vermont using a Q-method survey and semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the survey found evidence for two distinct perspectives on land use governance, which were termed Green Governance and Government Scepticism. While distinct, these perspectives were not diametrically opposed; on many issues of concern to one group the other group was neutral. These groups did not map directly onto residential status; in particular, long-time residents were clearly evident in both groups. Looking deeper into the stances on land use, tensions between stances are evident at both the level of the group and the individual. The dissertation traces these tensions and considers their implications for how individuals are enrolled in larger political projects such as neoliberalism. In many cases, uncertain enrolment suggests places where groups could productively engage each other and develop less antagonistic relationships. The dissertation fits the political orientations it examines into a broader cultural reading of social divisions that goes beyond residential status. It posits the existence of cultural complexes with an array of components contributing to social identity. These components – which include residential status and political orientation – influence each other without being determining. Compared with more established moral economy frameworks, this model seeks to provide a more flexible theorization of the relationship between social identity and political outlook.
