Heuristic Evaluation of Dalhousie Repository Interface

ALJohani, Maha 08 July 2013 (has links)
The number of Institutional Repositories (IRs), such as DalSpace, has been growing in the past few years. However, most IRs are not widely used by the intended end users. Evaluating the user interfaces is an essential part of any process to increase users' acceptance of IRs. There are two foci of this thesis: to evaluate the usability of DalSpace's interface using Nielsen's heuristics to uncover usability problems for development purposes and to examine the differences between user-interface experts and non-experts in uncovering problems with the interface. To apply the heuristics to the interface, I formed user profiles (also known as personas) to represent potential end-users groups. These profiles helped to communicate users' needs, abilities, tasks, and problems. To produce a reliable list of usability problems by applying the heuristic evaluation approach, I examined the impact of expertise on the quality of the results. From the individual heuristic analyses (by both experts and novices), I distilled 66 usability problems classified by severity. Also, the frequency of each violated heuristic was used to assign priority to the uncovered usability problems as well as the severity level. The results of applying the heuristic evaluation show that both experts and non-experts can uncover usability problems. In fact, the ability to find difficult and easy problems was recorded for both types of evaluators. However, experts tend to reveal more serious problems, while novices uncover less severe problems. Interestingly, the best evaluator (who found 21% of the total number of problems) was a novice. Our results indicate that we cannot rely on one evaluator even if the evaluator is an expert. The administrative interface is out of the scope of the thesis; however, the usability of the interface should be examined for improvement purposes. More user profiles should be formed to represent additional user groups for more interfaces including the end user and staff's interfaces. Both results from the user profiles and the list of usability problems will be given as tools to the development team for improvement.

Ingesta asistida de contenidos en repositorios digitales

Carmine, Fernando Daniel January 2015 (has links)

The DSpace Institutional Digital Repository System: Current Functionality

Tansley, Robert, Bass, Mick, Stuve, David, Branschofsky, Margret, Chudnov, Daniel, McClellan, Greg, Smith, MacKenzie January 2003 (has links)
In this paper we describe DSpace™, an open source system that acts as a repository for digital research and educational material produced by an organization or institution. DSpace was developed during two years’ collaboration between the Hewlett-Packard Company and MIT Libraries. The development team worked closely with MIT Libraries staff and early adopter faculty members to produce a ‘breadth-first’ system, providing all of the basic features required by a digital repository service. As well as functioning as a live service, DSpace is intended as a base for extending repository functionality, particularly to address long-term preservation concerns. We describe the functionality of the current DSpace system, and briefly describe its technical architecture. We conclude with some remarks about the future development and operation of the DSpace system.

E-ternally yours : the case for the development of a reliable repository for the preservation of personal digital objects

Peterson, Lesley L. 01 January 2010 (has links)
This paper examines the feasibility of establishing reliable repositories intended for the use of the average individual for the preservation of personal digital objects. Observers of technological change warn of the coming of a "digital dark age." Rather than being systematic, the attempts of the average individual to preserve his or her personal digital objects - photos, documents, music - are ad hoc, at best. Digital archiving involves challenges both in terms of hardware reliability and software obsolescence, and requires a blend of technology platforms, legal and public policies, and organizational structure. These three areas must be combined in a cohesive manner in order to facilitate the preservation of personal digital objects for periods of decades or even centuries. Regarding the issue of technological feasibility, I present an examination of work that has already been performed in the field of digital preservation, including an assessment ofDSpace, an open source platform used in institutional repositories to encapsulate data for long term archival. I then introduce my development of Alexandria@CyberStreet.com as an exploration of how a DSpace installation may be modified to suit the needs of personal archiving. Next, I present an examination of the legal and public policy issues concerning such a repository. Finally, I examine organizations that are devoted to the oversight of long-term endeavors and draw conclusions as to an appropriate administrative structure. I conclude that there are sufficient technological tools, public policies and organizational models in place to enable establishment of reliable, long term repositories for personal digital objects.

Pires, Daniele Cristina Gonçalves Brene 30 September 2015 (has links)
The information and knowledge management emerges in a socioeconomic context in which information and knowledge are recognized as a resource. An immaterial and inexhaustible asset that has a high potential for generating organizational sustainability. Probably, this management tool meets the demands of a new organizational behavior, which seeks to understand the impact of the information creation and use on competitive advantage. Thus, and having as object of study the relationship between the information and knowledge and core competence, we sought to verify its impact on the emergence of core competence, especially considering the use of DSpace, a digital repository. Through the application of exploratory-descriptive methodology, a study about the experience of using the DSpace platform in a court of Labor Justice was done. The analysis of literature and experience report identifies that the techniques of information and knowledge management collaborates to establish the core competence, especially considering an integration between the informational needs, the information flows, the informational culture, information behavior and the use of information. In addition, it was found that digital repositories can be a factor of influence for the development of core competence, especially because its main function is structuring the informational cycle for generating new knowledge and, finally, it was found that the DSpace is an important tool, which supports the development of core competence. It allows creating a stock of information and/or knowledge produced or acquired by organizations, better supporting the establishment of an optimal enabling environment for acquisition of new capabilities to act.

Josefsson, Per January 2009 (has links)
This document is a part of my bachelor degree thesis in electronic engineering was done at Växjö University, MSI. This work is a part of a bigger project called Crane Tip Control which is pursued by Växjö University, Rottne Industri and others, whose purpose is to facilitate for drivers to control the crane used on forwarders from Rottne. For this project, a laboratory crane has been used and they requested that a new control system from dSPACE was installed to the crane. Also they want new sensors to be placed on the crane and connected to dSPACE. A manual should also be created for new students who want to use the system. The new dSPACE-system consists of a computer box with processor- and I/O-boards. Communication with dSPACE is done via a PC. The work with the installation has encountered many problems and the work has been overrun. When the system finally was working, some tests were performed and then the system was installed at the crane. A task to assemble data for installation of accelerometers, was done during the same time and a comparison between different alternatives was made. The work resulted in the laboratory crane is now able to be controled by the new dSPACE-system and a manual was created to facilitate the usage of the system.

Digitální knihovny na Univerzitě Karlově v Praze / Digital Libraries at the Charles University in Prague

Zemanová, Veronika January 2018 (has links)
The dissertation focuses on digitization in libraries of Charles University. In connection with accessible sources, online questionnaire survey and half-structured interviews done with representatives of eight faculty libraries, the digitization activity under Charles University is presented. Transformations of the library collections into digital forms are in motion in many libraries, therefore the amount of digital material is growing and it is not co-ordinated. The great amount of digital objects is followed by a matter of depositing data and making them accessible, which is currently very topical at Charles University. The aim of the dissertation is to analyse digital libraries and repositories produced and runned at this university. First part of the thesis explains - besides set aims and metodology - terminological basis of the dissertation, especially connection between digital library and digital repository. The digital activities are analysed also from the point of staffing of performed functions, hardware and software equipment at digitalization departments of libraries, technical specification of digitized documents, metadata and also method of depositing data and making them accessible. Digitization projects in chosen faculty libraries are introduced as well. Third part of the thesis is...
