The biography of photographs: a digital e-patriation project in Banda, GhanaPlante, Veronique 23 December 2016 (has links)
In 2013, Ghana’s second largest dam was constructed on the Black Volta River, bordering the Banda region. The Bui Dam, while contributing to the country’s growing electrical supply, has also forced the relocation of thousands of villagers. In addition to the considerable changes to lifeways, the dam has brought attention to Banda from global businesspeople and tourists alike. In light of the ongoing changes to local social and economic processes, the Banda Thru Time project emerged. This project seeks to e-patriate images—from historic times to the present—to the communities that make up Banda.
My part in the project—and the focus of this thesis—was to create a web portal to the repository that would contain these images in addition to other historic documents. In addition to the creation of the web portal, the thesis portion of this project engages the process of digital epatriation and the four lines of inquiry that came to inform my research: determining through what pathways digital e-patriation is initiated and achieved in a community; how collections get assembled, with an interest in the implications this has for interpretation; how a collection can be presented to unsettle the troubling either/or dichotomy of continuity and change; and how memory work relates to the process of assembling a collection for the purposes of e-patriation / Graduate

A digital repository for indigenous Amazonian cultural materialsRuedas, Javier 15 August 2012 (has links)
The objective of this report is to explore the design characteristics for a repository of indigenous Amazonian digital cultural heritage objects. I first examine the design objectives in relation to the available collection of digital objects. I then analyze the characteristics and expectations of the user community, and the implications of these expectations for repository design. I report on the specific intellectual property rights (IPR) laws and ideals applicable to this collection. I review possible copyright and licensing systems to protect indigenous IPR. In particular, I discuss the Mukurtu content management system (CMS) and its associated Traditional Knowledge licenses. I then report on my efforts to use the Mukurtu CMS as a means for making the collection available to the user community and for long-term digital preservation. I conclude with ideas about how Mukurtu or a similar content management system could be used for long-term management and preservation of indigenous Amazonian digital cultural heritage. / text

An investigation into the extent to which South African repositories comply with international trust standardsTshweu, Glenn Tiisetso January 2016 (has links)
An institutional repository is seen as a valuable tool to manage digital resources within the organisational context. Repositories can have a positive or negative influence on how an institution manages its digital material in relation to accessibility and dissemination of digital material.
The functionality and status quo of digital repositories can be assessed and measured based on specific guidelines to determine practicality and efficacy. The guidelines used in this regard are known as international repository assessment standards. These standards have been developed by leading organisations that specialise in knowledge creation to develop controlled, consensus-based, market-relevant international standards that can be used to support innovation and provide resolutions to global challenges. In the event where an institution wishes to assess its digital repository using international standards, the underlying purpose of the assessment exercise is for the digital repository to gain trust accreditation.
This study aimed to develop a South African digital repository trust assessment model based on the criteria of international standards. This study investigated the level of trust compliance that a very small sample of South African digital repositories met – using the developed model. The investigation process is also aimed at receiving feedback (in the form of recommendations) from digital repository managers to improve the developed model to make it more useful for South African digital repositories. Furthermore, the study intended to yield further research into the complex topic of digital repository assessment based on international standards. Overall, this research study revealed that South African digital repositories are not far off in complying with the full requirements of international repository assessment standards. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Carnigie / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

The information and knowledge management emerges in a socioeconomic context in which information and knowledge are recognized as a resource. An immaterial and inexhaustible asset that has a high potential for generating organizational sustainability. Probably, this management tool meets the demands of a new organizational behavior, which seeks to understand the impact of the information creation and use on competitive advantage. Thus, and having as object of study the relationship between the information and knowledge and core competence, we sought to verify its impact on the emergence of core competence, especially considering the use of DSpace, a digital repository. Through the application of exploratory-descriptive methodology, a study about the experience of using the DSpace platform in a court of Labor Justice was done. The analysis of literature and experience report identifies that the techniques of information and knowledge management collaborates to establish the core competence, especially considering an integration between the informational needs, the information flows, the informational culture, information behavior and the use of information. In addition, it was found that digital repositories can be a factor of influence for the development of core competence, especially because its main function is structuring the informational cycle for generating new knowledge and, finally, it was found that the DSpace is an important tool, which supports the development of core competence. It allows creating a stock of information and/or knowledge produced or acquired by organizations, better supporting the establishment of an optimal enabling environment for acquisition of new capabilities to act.

Institutional repositories include a technological and service infrastructure that aims to publication, access, use and store information. These repositories handle intellectual production of a given institution, and are directly connected with higher education institutions. However, their technological environment is fragile, and exposes the formats and supports to obsolescence. Therefore, digital preservation, as a set of processes aimed at ensuring the safety and long-term access to this production, gain fundamental importance. ?Rede Cariniana?, the Brazilian network of preservation services managed by IBICT, is committed to solve this problem. The network uses the model of distributed digital preservation, operationalized through the LOCKSS software. With the goal of supporting a cooperation agreement between the UFRN and IBICT, this study proposes a set of minimum requirements, directed to the UFRN and its institutional repository, to tailor the repository to ?Rede Cariniana?, enabling the preservation and long-term access to the intellectual production of UFRN. The requirements concern mainly the preparation of documents, so that they are deposited properly in the repository and subsequently incorporated into ?Rede Cariniana?. The proposed set of requirements is aimed at supporting the working agreement and treat the digital preservation of UFRN intellectual production in the short term, enabling the institution to build, in a medium and long term, a more ambitious digital preservation plan, or a certification plan for its repository.

Organização e disseminação da produção científica dos docentes do CCSH/UFSM em um repositório digital / Organization and dissemination of scientific production of teachers of CCSH / UFSM in a digital repositoryVieira, Luciana Corrêa 13 April 2013 (has links)
In recent years, the continued advancement of information technology has been changing the production process and scientific communication, enabling new forms of access to research results. Universities and research institutions now have new ways to generate, disseminate and preserve knowledge, such as digital repositories, which contribute to increase the visibility of the scientific output of the institution. However, the successful implementation of a repository depends on a consistent policy of information that enables broad dissemination of scientific and count with the participation of the academic community, especially the teachers who are responsible for much of the knowledge generated in the academic realm. Thus, this paper aims to propose a policy organization, dissemination and access to scientific output of teachers in CCSH/UFSM based on free access through a digital repository. Therefore, we carried out a descriptive study, which allowed us to characterize the scientific output of teachers in CCSH, investigate their production practices and dissemination of knowledge and ultimately establish actions to build a digital repository. Among the results, it was found that, despite significant technological changes in the forms of scientific communication and understanding of teachers about the importance of using resources more democratic access to the scientific literature, there is a disagreement about the concepts related to the means of publication and communication of knowledge produced, indicating the need for a work presentation and disclosure of a repository, demonstrating its role in the scholarly communication system, as well as the differences and similarities with other systems of dissemination of scientific production. It also became clear that the concern of teachers in adopting a digital repository is focused on issues related to plagiarism, legitimacy of the result of their research, violation of rights granted to publishers of scientific and requirements of funding agencies, such as Capes. The policy of the organization, dissemination and access to the scientific proposal in this study was prepared considering some essential aspects like information policy goals; responsibilities for managing the repository; organization repository; contents and formats; deposit/submission of documents , legal aspects, access and sustainability of the repository.
