Investigation of the thermal effects in dynamically driven dielectric elastomer actuators

Kleo, Mario, Mößinger, Holger, Förster-Zügel, Florentine, Schlaak, Helmut F., Wallmersperger, Thomas 13 August 2020 (has links)
Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are compliant capacitors, which are able to transduce electrical into mechanical energy and vice versa. As they may be applied in different surrounding conditions and in applications with alternating excitations, it is necessary to investigate both, the thermal behavior and the in fluence of the temperature change during operation. Due to mechanical and electrical loss mechanisms during the energy transfer, the DEA is subjected to an intrinsic heating. In detail, the dielectric material, which has viscoelastic properties, shows a mechanical hysteresis under varying mechanical loads. This behavior leads to a viscoelastic loss of energy in the polymer layer, resulting in a heating of the structure. The non-ideal conduction of the electrode provokes a resistive loss when charging and discharging the electrode layer. Operation with frequencies in the kilohertz-range leads to remarkable local heat dissipation. The viscoelastic material behavior and the resistivity are assumed to be dependent on the temperature and/or on the strain of the material. By this, a back-coupling from the thermal field to the mechanical field or the electrical field is observed. In order to provide a thermal equilibrium, also the convective cooling { the structure is subjected to { has to be considered. Depending on the frequency and the type of electrical driving signal and mechanical load, viscoelastic and resistive heating provide different contributions during the dynamic process. In the present study we capture the described effects within our modeling approach. For a given dielectric elastomer actuator, numerical investigations are performed for a given electrical load.

This research proposes to reduce the dynamic amplification factor through the seismic design of tall buildings based on the requirements of Peruvian code considering that they are regular in plan and height. Minimum base shear values according to the comparison of static seismic shear and dynamic shear from the spectral modal analysis were reviewed for cases of buildings larger than 120 m. The study of 28 reinforced concrete buildings was proposed, with different heights - varying from 24 to 36 floors, with different floor configurations, as well as the arrangement of the walls considering as a rigid core structural system. Additionally, the characteristics of the materials, the loads and combinations were defined. The responses of these buildings were determined by the response spectrum analysis (RSA) and then compared with those obtained by the lineal response history analysis (LRHA), for the last analysis, five Peruvian seismic records were used and scaled to 0.45 g. The seismic responses of the LRHA procedure were taken as a benchmark. The result of this study is the analysis and proposal of the C/R factor for high-rise buildings, as well as obtaining the base shear and drift verification. Minimum base shear values can be reduced for high or long-term buildings, being regular in plan and height. / Revisión por pares

Etude et simulation du bruit des boîtes de transmission principales d'hélicoptères / Study and simulation of helicopters main gearboxes noises

Roulois, Guillaume 26 May 2011 (has links)
Ces mesures nous permettent de mieux comprendrele comportement vibroacoustique des BTP et de confirmer certaines tendances observées avecnotre modèle / Main gearbox (MGB) is one of the main noise sources in helicopter cabinsand it strongly penalizes acoustic comfort of crews and passengers. In order to reduce theimpact of this source, acoustic and vibration mechanisms of gearboxes have to be understoodand simulated during the development phases. By this way, MGB vibroacoustic behaviourcould be improved by design, thus reducing cost, additional weight and integration difficultiesof sound-proofing solutions. This work presents helicopters MGB and the noise they generate. It also presents our developments regarding the modelling of MGB dynamic behaviour fornoise computation. We have developed a finite elements code allowing to conduct parametricstudies to tune the gearboxes design in early development phases. Our model is able tocompute dynamic loads on bearings of any transmission composed of several cylindrical andspiral bevel gears. At last, we analyse acoustic and vibration measurements done around twoMGB for several conditions of torque and speed. These measurements allow to betterunderstand MGB vibroacoustic behaviour and to confirm some trends observed with ourmodel

Finite Element Analysis of Stresses in the MIST CubeSat due to Dynamic Loads During Launch / Analys av spänningar från dynamiska uppskjutningslaster i satelliten MIST med hjälp av finita elementmetoden

Järmyr Eriksson, Carl January 2021 (has links)
A finite element model of the CubeSat MIST was created, in order to assess the stresses that occur in the satellite in response to loads during its launch. Due to size limits of thesoftware used, simplifications had to be made to the geometry of the model. The loads assessed were quasi-static accelerations, random vibrations, shock loads, as well as a combined quasi-static acceleration and random vibration case. The study assumed the worst possible loads from a list of different potential launch vehicles for the satellite. Non-linear boundary conditions could not be modelled, and instead different linear boundary condition combinations were assessed. The results showed that the satellite showed positive margins of safety for the quasi-static loads. The lowest natural frequency for the satellite was above 130 Hz. For the random vibration loads, positive margins of safety could be shown if adverse stresses attributed to the boundary conditions inthe worst case were ignored. The model proved too conservative to qualify the satellite for the shock loads. Shock testing is therefore recommended for future work, unless requirements for waiving the shock testing can be met. The random vibration and combined loads analysis showed that the −X shear panel experienced high stresses in the corners of its windows, and the part should be inspected once environmental tests are conducted. The −X shear panel only showed adverse stresses in the most extreme boundary condition case, where its deformation was deemed unrealistic.
