A comparative study on the "American innocence" issue : Henry Jame's The American and Daisy Miller : a study

Zardo, Mônica January 2006 (has links)
This thesis approaches the “American innocence” issue in two works of the North- American writer Henry James by using some concepts of Comparative Literature as base to the analysis of the chosen texts: The American and Daisy Miller: A Study. Therefore, the concepts of intertextuality, influence and alterity are vital to establish the confluences and divergences between the analyzed works. This work also presents an analysis, based on the interdisciplinary theory, between the literary work Daisy Miller: A Study and the film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, Daisy Miller. The recurrent theme in the analyzed works, the American innocence, was approached by Henry James in most part of his literary production, being a reflex of his own experience as the “other”, and his observations on his countrymen, when confronted with the values and traditions in vigor in the nineteenth-century Europe. Henry James has achieved his place on the Western literary canon, due to his incomparable writing style, which he had improved through his career and still today is a reference to contemporary writers.

Automatic conversion of PDF-based, layout-oriented typesetting data to DAISY: potentials and limitations

Nikolaus, Ulrich, Dobroschke, Julia January 2009 (has links)
Only two percent of new books released in Germany are professionally edited for visually impaired people. However, more and more print publications are made available to the public in digital formats through online content delivery platforms like “libreka!”. The automatic conversion of such contents into DAISY would considerably increase the number of publications available in accessible formats. Still, most data available on “libreka!” is published as non-tagged PDF. In this paper, we examine the potential for automatic conversion of “libreka!”-based content into DAISY, while also analyzing the potentials and limitations of current conversion tools.

Getting the most out of DAISY using synthetic speech

Hubert, Wolfgang January 2010 (has links)
RTFC is a multichannel publishing tool which has been designed to convert text documents into several accessible formats. You can produce books in common file formats like plain text, HTML and HTML Help as well as large print, Braille, web Braille and DAISY. It implements a standard for e-books which was created at German schools for the blind. This standard makes it possible to get the most out of DAISY even though desktop publishing software often has no capabilities to mark up optional content like annotations or sidebars. Therefore RTFC is especially suitable to convert school books and other non-fiction literature.

Design och utveckling av HybridRadio : Examensarbete i produktutveckling

Grubbström, Cecilia January 2009 (has links)
<p>This Thesis has been carried out in cooperation with To Me Group AB. To MeGroup AB is a company situated in Linköping working with innovative solutionsfor new media. They are the largest provider of audio guides in the NordicCountries, inter alia.</p><p>The objective of this thesis has been to develop a concept and a physical model of the “HybridRadio”. The “HybridRadio” is a consumer product which makes daily information e.g. news, personal information from for example the bank or pharmacy etc. available to all by spreading written information with sound. It was important that the “HybridRadio” should have an interface that simplifies the understanding of the product functions for the user. Part of the thesis has been to link audio navigation to the design of this product.</p><p>In the early phase of this thesis project, a market research was carried out, inwhich rival products were distinguished, and their properties compiled andanalyzed concerning design, function and technology. A radio and a DAISY-player was purchased and analyzed. This gave an indication of what the “HybridRadio” could be developed into. A study was later made of different varieties of audios which would work with the navigation. Among these audios there were voice synthesis, Earcon, Auditive Icons, Digitalized Audio, and Spearcons. Initiation in the Novellas of Henry James

Milsted, Collyn E 15 December 2010 (has links)
This Master’s Thesis seeks to explain the process of initiation undergone by Henry James’s characters. Characters are chosen for initiation into forbidden knowledge, and, like the Biblical Adam and Eve, are exiled as a result. Though initiation is erotic, it is not sexual, and society falsely perceives a sexually charged relationship between the initiator and the initiate, also called the complementary pair. The initiate faces exile and death because of his forbidden knowledge. He no longer has a place in his society, which leads to his social death and eventually physical death. James’s reader is initiated along with the characters, becoming a critical reader who no longer sees reading as a passive activity but brings his own judgment to the text. The Jamesian Reader does not face the same fate as the initiate, but he does change substantively as a result of his new perspective on the text.
