Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Hydrodynamic Loading of Tsunami-like Surges on InfrastructuresLiu, Shilong 15 December 2022 (has links)
Tsunamis have caused severe damage to coastal communities and associated infrastructure over the past decades. Thus, researchers deemed necessary to investigate and better understand the mechanisms loading associated with tsunami waves and the inundation caused by them. Over the past few years, researchers have demonstrated that the dam-break waves are hydrodynamically similar to the onshore propagation of tsunami inundation; hence, dam-break waves are now widely used to investigate tsunami impacts. Various studies related to dam-break waves have been conducted to investigate their characteristics: the kinematic behavior, including free surface profiles, wave height, wave front velocity, and dynamics including the impact pressure and associated force. Most dam-break experiments have been conducted on a horizontal bed, in a tank or a flume, while few studies had employed sloped surfaces. However, natural and artificial beaches usually have slopes ranging from 0-degrees to 20-degrees (or more).
In this study, downstream slopes are considered to investigate the influence of slope effects on the kinematic behaviors and associated hydrodynamic loadings due to dam-break waves. The Volume of Fluid method (VOF) code of the OpenFOAM and the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code of the DualSPHysics were applied to reproduce the results of physical tests and provide a comparison with the experimental results. First, existing boundary treatment methods in the SPH were studied and compared to a self-developed code in order to select the best performing method by checking the flow behaviors. In the second part of the thesis, experimental investigation of the impact of dam-break induced surges over a horizontal bed against a vertical wall was conducted by analysing the rapidly varying correlation between the wave height and the associated dynamic pressure. In the third part of this study, three different downstream slopes were added in the experimental setup to investigate the beach effects on the kinematics of dam-break flow, including the free surface profiles, wave height, wave front location and its velocity. In the last part, the impact dynamic pressure on the vertical straight wall from the horizontal and sloped cases were captured to investigate the slope effects on the hydrodynamic loading. The impact force integrated from the dynamic pressure was determined with a simplified calculation formula. In addition, the physical experiments were also reproduced by the numerical models of OpenFOAM and DualSPHysics to compare and investigate their accuracy and to analyze the differences between the physical tests and numerical simulations.

Hydrodynamics of Turbulent Bores Propagating Over a CanalElsheikh, Nuri Eltaher 04 January 2023 (has links)
Recent tsunami events have inflicted devastating damage to coastal communities. Existing design standards provide a certain level of evaluation of tsunami effects such that critical infrastructure can be designed to resist tsunamis. Tsunami momentum flux, used to design structures is a function of water level height and velocity of tsunami bores. Understanding tsunamis and developing mitigation measures is essential. So far, some mitigation measures have been suggested, and to improve them, further investigations are required. The design of tsunami inundation effects mitigation canals is one of the suggested solutions which has received limited attention. The first objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a rectangular canal on the hydrodynamics of turbulent bores before and after the canal by conducting a series of physical experiments. A dam-break wave was used to simulate the tsunami-like turbulent waves passing over a smooth and horizontal surface, in the presence and/or absence of a canal. Three canal water depths were used to model shallow, moderate, and deep conditions, and three canal widths were also selected to model narrow to wide conditions while the dam break waves were generated from three different impoundment depths in a reservoir located upstream of the canal. The dam-break wave propagation over a horizontal, dry, and smooth bed revealed four regimes describing the variations of bore height with time. The time to reach the maximum bore height and the quasi steady-state regime were correlated with each impoundment depth and an empirical formulation was proposed to estimate the onset of the quasi steady-state flow. The maximum bore heights measured before and after the mitigation canal location were approximately 40 % and 50 % respectively, higher compared with those recorded in the corresponding tests without the presence of a canal. The second objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of canal depth on the time history of bore height and its velocity. The experimental results were used for calibration and validation of a developed numerical model. The rapid release of an upstream impoundment water depth was employed to generate a bore analogous to a tsunami-induced inundation. The time histories of wave heights and velocity were measured upstream and downstream of the canal. The recorded time-series of the water surface levels and velocities were compared with the simulation results and good agreement was found between experimental and numerical water surface profiles using a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and the Relative Error. Three turbulence models:, namely the standard k-ε, the Realizable k-ε, and the RNG k-ε were tested, and it was found that all turbulence models perform well but the standard k-ε model provided satisfactory accuracy. The velocity contour plots for shallow, medium, and deep mitigation canals showed the formation and evolution of jets of different characteristics. The energy dissipation and air bubble entrainment of the tsunami bore, as it plunged into a canal, increased as the canal depth increased, and the jet flow of the maximum bore velocity decreased with increased canal depth. It was found that the eye of the vortex in the canal moved steadily in the downstream direction. Generally, the bore fully plunged almost nearly into the middle of the canal and started to divide into two small vortices. The third objective of this study dealt with a sequence of numerical experiments conducted to investigate the impact of mitigation canals on the hydrodynamics of a tsunami-like turbulent bore moving across a flat bed. The effects of mitigation canal depth and its orientation on the reduction of maximum specific momentum and energy of turbulent bores crossing over it were investigated numerically. Variations in the ratio between the downstream and upstream maximum specific momentum and mean flow energy decreased as the canal depth increased, and the time history of the mean flow energy over a canal with a rectangular endwise profile revealed that the canal depth affects the jet stream of the maximum mean flow energy. As the canal depth increased, the period of time needed to dissipate the area of the jet stream with the maximum turbulent kinetic energy, vorticity, and energy dissipation rate decreased. Both the angled and perpendicular to flow direction canals caused the maximum specific momentum and energy of the turbulent bore to decrease downstream of the canal. The specific momentum and energy achieved their highest values for a canal orientation of 45º. The greatest reductions in maximum specific momentum for turbulent bores over canals with different depths and orientations were achieved for 𝜃 = 30°.

Analytical solution of shallow water equations for ideal dam-break flood along a wet bed slopeWang, B., Chen, Y., Peng, Y., Zhang, J., Guo, Yakun 04 December 2019 (has links)
Yes / The existing analytical solutions of dam-break flow do not consider simultaneously the effects of wet downstream bottom and bed slope on the dam-break wave propagation. In this study, a new analytical solution for the shallow-water equations (SWE) is developed to remove this limitation to simulate the wave caused by an instantaneous dam-break. The approach adopts the method of characteristics and has been applied to simulate the dam-break flows with different downstream water depths and slopes. The analytical solutions have been compared with predictions by the lattice Boltzmann method and the agreement is good. Although the proposed analytical solution treats an idealized case, it is nonetheless suitable for assessing the robustness and accuracy of numerical models based on the SWE without the frictional slope. / The National Key Research and Development Program of China (Grant No: 2018YFC1505000), National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Nos: 51879179; 51579166) and Sichuan Science and Technology Program (No. 2019JDTD0007); Open Fund from the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University (SKHL1809). .

Gate-opening criterion for generating dam-break flow in non-rectangular wet bed channelsYang, S., Wang, B., Guo, Yakun, Zhang, J., Chen, Y. 28 November 2020 (has links)
Yes / A sudden dam failure is usually simulated by the rapid removal of a gate in laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The gate-opening time is often determined according to the Lauber and Hager instantaneous collapse criterion (referred to as Lauber-Hager criterion) established for a rectangular open channel with a dry bed. However, this criterion is not suitable for non-rectangular channels or initial wet-bed conditions. In this study, the effect of the gate-opening time on the wave evolution is investigated by using the large eddy simulation (LES) model. The instantaneous dam break, namely the dam break without a gate, is simulated for comparison. A gate-opening criterion for generating dam-break flow in non-rectangular wet bed channel is proposed in this study, which can be used as an extension of the Lauber-Hager criterion and provides a more comprehensive and reasonable estimate of the gate opening time. / National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No: 51879179), the Open Fund from the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University (SKHL1809) and Sichuan Science and Technology Program (No. 2019JDTD0007).

Numerical study of the dam-break waves and Favre waves down sloped wet rigid-bed at laboratory scaleLiu, W., Wang, B., Guo, Yakun 22 March 2022 (has links)
Yes / The bed slope and the tailwater depth are two important ones among the factors that affect the propagation of the dam-break flood and Favre waves. Most previous studies have only focused on the macroscopic characteristics of the dam-break flows or Favre waves under the condition of horizontal bed, rather than the internal movement characteristics in sloped channel. The present study applies two numerical models, namely, large eddy simulation (LES) and shallow water equations (SWEs) models embedded in the CFD software package FLOW-3D to analyze the internal movement characteristics of the dam-break flows and Favre waves, such as water level, the velocity distribution, the fluid particles acceleration and the bed shear stress, under the different bed slopes and water depth ratios. The results under the conditions considered in this study show that there is a flow state transition in the flow evolution for the steep bed slope even in water depth ratio α = 0.1 (α is the ratio of the tailwater depth to the reservoir water depth). The flow state transition shows that the wavefront changes from a breaking state to undular. Such flow transition is not observed for the horizontal slope and mild bed slope. The existence of the Favre waves leads to a significant increase of the vertical velocity and the vertical acceleration. In this situation, the SWEs model has poor prediction. Analysis reveals that the variation of the maximum bed shear stress is affected by both the bed slope and tailwater depth. Under the same bed slope (e.g., S0 = 0.02), the maximum bed shear stress position develops downstream of the dam when α = 0.1, while it develops towards the end of the reservoir when α = 0.7. For the same water depth ratio (e.g., α = 0.7), the maximum bed shear stress position always locates within the reservoir at S0 = 0.02, while it appears in the downstream of the dam for S0 = 0 and 0.003 after the flow evolves for a while. The comparison between the numerical simulation and experimental measurements shows that the LES model can predict the internal movement characteristics with satisfactory accuracy. This study improves the understanding of the effect of both the bed slope and the tailwater depth on the internal movement characteristics of the dam-break flows and Favre waves, which also provides a valuable reference for determining the flood embankment height and designing the channel bed anti-scouring facility. / National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No: 51879179, 52079081), the Open Fund from the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University (SKHL1809) and the Sichuan Science and Technology Program (No. 2019JDTD0007)

The dam break problem describes a phenomenon in which there is an abrupt release of fluid. When the fluid is hiperconcentrated, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate can become non-linear, and so present a non-Newtonian rheology. The non-Newtonian dam break problem may be found in many phenomena in nature and industrial process. The study of such a problem is, generally, conducted using simplified hypothesis such as the shallow water approximation and the separation of the flow in inertial and viscous dominated regimes. The present work is composed of two parts, one experimental and other, numerical. In the experimental field, two controlled solutions were used: water solutions of sugar and of Carbopol 940, the last one with a wide range of volume concentrations. These fluids have, respectively, Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheologies. The experimental setup consists of an acrylic rectangular channel, which has a dam and upstream of that the fluid is retained and, by the rupture, it begins to flow. The flow is studied by using advanced filming techniques. In the numerical field, simulations are conducted using the CFX software, which uses an interface tracking method, the VOF, and without the shallow water approximation and the division of the flow. So the experimental, numerical and literature results, that uses such simplifications, are compared and it is showed that the shallow water approximation, however describes very well the shape of the surface, is not accurate in calculate the wave front position.

The Dam Break problem is a phenomenon characterized by a flow field initially dammed and submitted in the subsequent moments of an abrupt release. Various mathematical models and laws of rheological behavior may be associated with this type of problem and each must be studied and understood in order to predict from physical and numerical tests the temporal evolution of their fronts resulting from this phenomenon, type Dan Break problems, retaining water or rheology complex materials. The development of analytical techniques enabled the understanding the development of these phenomena, however, the difficulty to obtain a reach agreement data with those obtained experimentally, showed the fragility of this type of analysis to the description of complex dynamic systems. But, it was decided by attempt of recreate these phenomena from techniques that use the manipulation of complete government equations. Continuous systems can be analyzed by discrete approximations, leading to realistic values, very close to those obtained experimentally, and current computational capacity, enables to reduce the errors involved significantly, increasing the consistency of these physical methods. This work used the commercial software ANSYSCFX to simulate the phenomena of breaking the barrier, setting the rheology of two materials, the Carbopol 940 representing a material of complex rheology (Herschel-Bulkley) and glycerol (Newtonian), these data were then compared with those obtained experimentally using a model in scale. Fields of velocity, pressure and temporal evolution of the fronts were analyzed. Found very similar values between numerical and experimental simulations, showing the physical consistency of the methods used / Mestre

Gefahrenkarten - ein Instrument zur Risikoabschätzung infolge eines hypothetischen TalsperrenbruchesBornschein, Antje 05 March 2007 (has links)
Dam failures and the following emptying of the reservoir are very seldom. But such catastrophes caused significant damages in the past. The related risk has to consider as high despite the high return period. The paper describes the development of hazard maps showing the dimension of inundation in the downstream region of the dam due to a potential failure. The needed data and possible used software for the dam break flood simulation were discussed. A dam break occurred in the catchment area of the Müglitz river in the Ore mountains during the flood 2002 is described. / Das Versagen einer Talsperre mit einer sich anschließenden Entleerung des Stauraumes ist sehr selten. Laminar and turbulent analytical dam break wave modelling on dry-downstream open channel flowTaha, T., Lateef, A.O.A., Pu, Jaan H. 26 September 2018 (has links)
Yes / A dam break wave caused by the discontinuity in depth and velocity of a flow is resulted from instantaneous release a body of water from a channel and classified naturally as a rapidly varied unsteady flow. Due to its nature, it is hard to be accurately represented by analytical models. The aim of this study is to establish the modelling differences and complexity echelons between analytically simulated explicit laminar and turbulent dry bed dam break wave free surface profiles. An in-depth solution to the free surface profile has been provided and evaluated by representing the reported dam break flow measurements at various locations. The methodology adopted utilizes the free surface profile formulations presented by Chanson 1,2, which are developed using the method of characteristics. In order to validate the results of the presented analytical models in illustrating the dam break wave under dry bed conditions, published experimental data provided by Schoklitsch 3, Debiane 4 and Dressler 5 are used to compare and analyze the performance of the dam break waves under laminar and turbulent flow conditions.

Flooding simulation using a high-order finite element approximation of the shallow water equationsNäsström, David January 2024 (has links)
Flooding has always been and is still today a disastrous event with agricultural, infrastructural, economical and not least humanitarian ramifications. Understanding the behaviour of floods is crucial to be able to prevent or mitigate future catastrophes, a task which can be accomplished by modelling the water flow. In this thesis the finite element method is employed to solve the shallow water equations, which govern water flow in shallow environments such as rivers, lakes and dams, a methodology that has been widely used for flooding simulations. Alternative approaches to model floods are however also briefly discussed. Since the finite element method suffers from numerical instabilities when solving nonlinear conservation laws, the shallow water equations are stabilised by introducing a high-order nonlinear artificial viscosity, constructed using a multi-mesh strategy. The accuracy, robustness and well-balancedness of the solution are examined through a variety of benchmark tests. Finally, the equations are extended to include a friction term, after which the effectiveness of the method in a real-life scenario is verified by a prolonged simulation of the Malpasset dam break.
