In the aviation field in particular, much ergonomics effort has been expended on specific aspects of the display technology such as the contrast ratios, effects of glare, font and so on. However, very little is known about the ergonomics aspects of new display technology applications in cars. In a series of experiments reported in this thesis three electronic display designs for a car instrument panel comprising speedometer, tachometer and minor gauges were tested by potential users.

The diploma thesis deals with the selection of tools used for reporting and managerial output for a telecommunications company that, with respect to the volume of its activities, falls into the category of small and medium-sized enterprises. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on general issues of Business Intelligence, on finding and combining recommendations for high-quality reporting and output, and on the method of choosing the right option meeting the necessary requirements from a wide selection. The practical part describes the reasons that led a specific company to the need for reporting tools. It summarizes the company's needs and analyzes the market of potential products. This part is concluded with a selection procedure that, using the created criteria, assesses individual products and attempts to find the best solution. This thesis is based on theoretical knowledge acquired during studies, as well as practical experience and consultations with experts in reporting. It can also serve to summarize requirements and to find options for companies looking for optimal reporting and output tools.

Microservice architecture is an emerging approach to application development. While the decentralized nature of microservices comes with advantages it also introduces new challenges to monitoring as the graph of interactions between services can be complex. We explore how a dashboard for microservice monitoring can support first-line operators with limited experience in software development and microservice architecture. We apply a participatory design approach and create a prototype in an iterative fashion together with developers, operators and stakeholders. The final prototype is evaluated through a think-aloud protocol and a system usability scale survey. A thematic analysis of the think-aloud renders three prevalent design lessons: (1) automation and context-switches; (2) consistency across views and states; and (3) language differences between developers and operators. / Mikrotjänstarkitektur används alltmer inom applikationsutveckling. Även om dess decentraliserade natur kommer med vissa fördelar, introducerar den också nya utmaningar inom övervakning, då den samtidigt kan medföra komplexa beroenden mellan tjänster. Vi utforskar hur en dashboard för mikrotjänstövervakning kan stödja first-line operatörer med begränsad erfarenhet av mjukvaruutveckling och mikrotjänstarkitektur. Vi närmar oss problemet med hjälp av participatory design och skapar en prototyp på ett iterativt sätt tillsammans med utvecklare, operatörer och intressenter. Den slutliga prototypen utvärderas genom ett think-aloud-protokoll och en System Usability Scale-enkät. Rapid developments in the educational system significantly facilitate the popularisation of education, making education more accessible. The learning process should be systematically analyzed to assist teaching, however, traditional learning systems provide limited support for educators. The learning analytics dashboard is, therefore, becoming a popular tool to provide insights into the learning process by analyzing and interpreting the collected data with effective visualizations. With the purpose of improving pedagogical decision-making, it is of importance to provide a comprehensive overview and informative feedback for the learning process. This study aims to explore the affordances and challenges of designing a comprehensive learning analytics dashboard for educators to support personalized learning and adaptive teaching. A large amount of research on the learning analytics dashboard was reviewed as the theoretical foundation. The prototype of the dashboard was developed based on the obtained theories. To examine the prototype, a user study with user experience designers was conducted to evaluate the clarity of the visualization and the effectiveness of the dashboard. The results summarised from the thematic analysis indicated that the dashboard could serve as a potentially valuable tool with overall clear interaction to support educators, and the visualization was considered intuitive to understand the connection of multiple data points. Suggestions for designing a learning analytics dashboard are discussed in terms of visualization, consistency, conception, navigation, interaction, information via text, visual appearance, functionality, and privacy. To further improve the affordances of the dashboard, future research with educators is of importance to conduct. / Den snabba tekniska utvecklingen inom utbildningsområdet har avsevärt underlättat populariseringen av utbildningen och gjort den mer tillgänglig. Inlärningsprocessen bör analyseras systematiskt för att stödja denna utveckling, men traditionella inlärningssystem ger begränsat stöd för lärare. Instrumentpaneler (dashboards) för inlärningsanalys har därför blivit ett populärt verktyg för att ge inblick i inlärningsprocessen genom att analysera och tolka den insamlade informationen med effektiva visualiseringar. I syfte att förbättra det pedagogiska beslutsfattandet är det viktigt att ge en omfattande översikt och informativ och kontinuerlig feedback för inlärningsprocessen. Denna studie syftar till att utforska fördelar och utmaningar med att utforma en omfattande instrumentpanel för lärandeanalys för lärare att stödja den individuella inlärningen och därmed kunna anpassa undervisningen. En stor mängd forskning på instrumentpaneler för inlärningsanalys granskades som underlag. Prototypen på instrumentpanelen utvecklades baserat på detta underlag. För att utvärdera prototypen genomfördes en användarstudie med UX-designers för att avgöra visualiseringens tydlighet och instrumentpanelens effektivitet. Resultaten från den tematiska analysen indikerade att instrumentpanelen kunde fungera som ett potentiellt värdefullt verktyg med en överlage tydlig interaktion för att stödja lärare och visualiseringen ansågs vara intuitiv för att förstå relationen mellan datapunkterna. Förslag för att utforma en instrumentpanel för inlärningsanalys diskuteras avseende visualisering, konsistens, uppfattning, navigering, interaktion, information via text, visuellt utseende, funktionalitet och integritet. För att ytterligare förbättra instrumentpanelens är framtida utveckling och utvärdering med pedagoger viktig att genomföra.

Dashboard Design Proposal for Trionas TNE Editor using User Centred DesignFrölander, Johan, Örjes, Patrik January 2023 (has links)
We have been working together with Triona AB to design a dashboard mock-up for their web application TNE Editor, so they can get a better overview of important information. A process with many steps is needed to gather information about Trionas customers, we want to reduce the number of these steps. Triona is an IT-consulting business. They primarily work with logistics and infrastructure organizations. Our goal was to develop an administrative dashboard for TNE Editor. A user centred design (UCD) approach was used. This was done by involving the users in the process from the beginning to determine what requirements the users had. A UCD methodology helps use valuate if they are satisfied with the design according to the usability requirement satisfaction. Our research questions were: How can a dashboard reduce the steps needed to gather statistical information of Trionas customers? By implementing design principles for a dashboard, will the users be satisfied with the dashboard design? We interviewed employees at Triona that use the TNE Editor and made a SWOT-analysis based on their answers. The results showed opportunities to implement different data about Trionas customers on a dashboard. Information like the activity trend the customers, proportion of accepted and rejected projects and common error messages. We designed a dashboard mock-up with the feedback from the interviewees together with design guidelines such as gestalt theory and information visualization theory. We have also taken usability and user experience principles into consideration to make the dashboard as efficient and user friendly as possible. The users of the TNE Editor generally seem pleased with the dashboard mock-up. However, there is still room for additional iterations to improve the design further. / Vi har samarbetat med Triona AB för att designa en dashboard prototyp för deras webbapplikation TNE Editor, så att de kan få en bättre översikt över viktig information. För att samla information om Trionas kunder så krävs en process med många steg, vi vill minska antalet steg i denna process. Triona är ett IT-konsultföretag som främst arbetar med logistik- och infrastrukturorganisationer. Vårt mål var att utveckla en administrativ instrumentpanel för TNE Editor. Vi använde oss av en användarcentrerad design (UCD)-metodik. Detta gjordes genom att involvera användarna i processen från början för att fastställa deras krav och behov. Användarna av TNE Editor verkar generellt sett nöjda med prototypen för instrumentpanelen. Det finns dock fortfarande utrymme för ytterligare iterationer för att ytterligare förbättra designen.

Information visualization of network parameters in private cellular network solutionsÅkesson, Emma January 2020 (has links)
In the upcoming years, industrial enterprises are expected to undergo a major transformation, as the Internet of Things (IoT) reaches widespread adoption. A key enabler behind this transformation, known as Industry 4.0, is the 5th generation of cellular networks (5G). Through privately owned networks, enterprises will be able to utilize the 5G technology to tailor the network to meet their needs in terms of security, reliability, and quality of service. Although much of the technology is currently in place, few efforts have been dedicated to help enterprises understand and optimise the value that this new solution brings. One way of making 5G more accessible is through information visualization of its data. Dashboards are today the widely adopted tool for processing data in organisations. This study aimed at examining the affordances and challenges of information visualization of 5G network data in such a tool, in order to make 5G more accessible. A large number of commercial network management dashboards were reviewed in relation to research on effective dashboard design, and a prototype was developed and evaluated with seven user experience experts. Results from the expert review suggests information visualization clearly aided communication of the five visualized network parameters: throughput, latency, availability, coverage, and devices. However, to fully examine the usefulness of the tool, further research on the tool’s fit in an industry context needs to be conducted. / Inom de kommande åren förväntas industriföretag genomgå en stor transformation, i samband med att sakernas internet (engelskans Internet of Things, IoT) når utbredd användning. En viktig möjliggörare bakom denna transformation, känd som Industri 4.0, är den 5:e generationens mobilnät (5G). Genom privatägda mobilnät kommer företag att kunna använda 5G teknologin till att skräddarsy sina nätverk för att tillgodose de egna behoven gällande säkerhet, tillförlitlighet och kvalitet. Trots att mycket av 5G teknologin redan är på plats, har få ansträngningar gjorts för att hjälpa företag förstå och optimera värdet som denna nya lösning medför. Ett sätt som kan göra 5G mer lättförståeligt är genom informationsvisualisering av dess data. Dashboards är idag det mest använda verktyget för att bearbeta data i organisationer. Denna studie ämnade därför att undersöka fördelarna och nackdelarna med informationsvisualisering av data från ett privat 5G-nät i ett sådant verktyg. Ett stort antal kommersiella dashboards för nätverksprestationshantering granskades i förhållande till forskning inom området för effektiv design av dashboards, och en prototyp utvecklades och utvärderades med sju experter inom användarupplevelse. Resultaten från expertgranskningen tyder på att användningen av informationsvisualisering klart hjälpte i kommunikationen av de fem visualiserade nätverksparametrarna: genomströmning, svarstid, tillgänglighet, täckning och uppkopplade enheter. Däremot krävs ytterligare forskning kring verktygets roll i industriell kontext för att kunna göra en fullständig granskning av verktygets användbarhet.

A Comparative Evaluation Between Two Design Solutions for an Information DashboardGannholm, Lovisa January 2013 (has links)
This study is a software usability design case about information presentation in a software dashboard. The dashboard is supposed to present system information about an enterprise resource planning system. The study aims to evaluate if the intended users of the dashboard prefer a list-based or an object-based presentation of the information and why. It also investigates if the possibility to get familiar with the prototype affects the evaluation’s result. The study was performed using parallel prototypes and evaluation with users. The use of parallel prototypes is a rather unexplored area. Likewise, little research has been done in the area of how user experience changes over time. Two prototypes were created, presenting the same information in two different design solutions, one list-based, and one object-based. The prototypes were evaluated with ten presumptive users, with respect to usability. The evaluation consisted of two parts, one quantitative and one qualitative. Half of the respondents got a chance to get familiar with the list-based prototype, and half the object-based prototype, after which they evaluated both sequentially. The result of the evaluation showed that seven out of ten respondents preferred the list-based prototype. The two primary reasons were that they are more used to the list-based concept from their work, and that the list-based prototype presented all information about an application at once. In the object-based prototype the user had to make a request for each type of information, which opened up in a new pop-up window. The primary reason that three of the ten respondents preferred the object-based prototype was that it had a more modern look, and gave a cleaner impression since it only presented the information the respondent was interested in at each point in time. The result also implied that the possibility to get familiar with the prototype by testing it for a couple of days affected the result. Eight out of ten respondents preferred the prototype they got familiar to, and the only ones that liked or preferred the object-based prototype were those who had gotten familiar with it. The results of the study support the results of the existing research done by Dow et al. (2010) on the use of parallel prototypes, i.e. creating several prototypes in parallel, and conform with the results of the research of Karapanos et al. (2009) on how user experience changes over time. Some other interesting information that emerged from the study was that all but one of the respondents thought that the prototype they got familiar with had an acceptable level of usability. The study also validated that all respondents are positive to use a dashboard in their work, and that the presented information was enough for a first version of the dashboard. It also validated that the different groups of users would use the dashboard differently, and therefore are in need of slightly different information.

Feedback is an essential part of the software delivery process. Software metrics, as feedback, can give knowledge about the essential parameters that affect the software development process. An improved understanding of the software development process can facilitate more effective software management. With new software development methodologies emerging, such as Continuous Delivery, new information needs arise. The new methodology requires a new way of thinking when designing and developing dashboards for software development. A dashboard is a communication tool that can provide up-to-date information through at a glance interaction. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how different software metrics related to Continuous Delivery can be visualized in a dashboard system at the company Saab. This thesis used a user-centered approach to find the appropriate visualization and user context to provide the user with feedback that supports the software development. The thesis work included user observations in the form of interviews and contextual inquiry. Thereafter, prototyping and usability testing were conducted in two iterations to design the dashboard and gather feedback. The result of this thesis work was a final prototype that was implemented in the program Kibana using real-time data from a software project. This thesis presents a set of elements that should be included when designing a dashboard for software development based on the findings of this study. / Feedback är en av de essentiella byggstenarna i en mjukvaruleveransprocess. Med mätvärden för mjukvaruutveckling kan organisationen få en större kunskap om de väsentliga faktorerna som påverkar mjukvaruutvecklingen. En ökad förståelse kan leda till en mer effektiv hantering av mjukvaruutveckling. Med nya metoder inom mjukvaruutveckling, t.ex. Continuous Delivery, som betyder kontinuerlig leverans, förändras behovet av feedback och nya utmaningar uppstår. Den nya metoden kräver nya uppläggningar vid utformning och utveckling av informationsradiatorer, en typ av kontrollpanel för mjukvaruutveckling. En kontrollpanel är ett kommunikationsverktyg som kan bidra med aktuell information om situationen genom att ge en överblicksbild. Målet med denna uppsats var att utreda hur mätvärden för mjukvaruutveckling kopplade till Continuous Delivery kan visualiseras på en kontrollpanel på företaget Saab. Detta examensarbete använde en användarcentrerad metod för att undersöka de vilka visualiseringar var lämpliga att använda och i vilken kontextanvändarna ville ha feedback. Examensarbetet utförde användarobservationer i form av intervjuer och kontextuell utredning. Sedan gjordes prototyper och användbarhetstestning. Detta gjordes i två iterationer för att samla in feedback och designa den slutgiltiga prototypen. Den prototypen utvecklades i programmet Kibana och använde realtidsdata från ett projekt. Resultatet i denna uppsats är ett förslag på vilka element som borde tas i hänsyn när en ska designa en kontrollpanel för systemutveckling.
