La thèse est consacrée à la modélisation analytique des réseaux de télécommunication à communication de paquets, véhiculant différents types de trafic, trafic temps-réel et transferts de données. Une première partie s'attache à l'évaluation de la performance des réseaux de données: l'analyse des différentes politiques d'allocation de ressource repose sur la théorie des réseaux de files d'attente dits Processor Sharing. En particulier, nous identifions et étudions les allocations insensibles aux caractéristiques statistiques fines du trafic. Nous étudions dans la deuxième partie le délai de traversée du réseau des paquets attachés aux applications temps-réel et donnons, à l'aide d'outils d'ordonnancement stochastique, quelques arguments en faveur de la conjecture "mieux que Poisson" majorant précisément ce délai. La dernière partie quantifie l'impact du trafic temps-réel sur la performance des transferts de données, étude basée également sur des notions d'ordre stochastique.

This thesis considers the problem of the representation of individual institutional textual records in archival research tools. While document studies in academic journals point to the value of focussed consideration of various types of records, archives do not have the resources to apply such focus to every item in their holdings, even though these convey the information sought by many researchers. Over the last century, archivists have emphasized description of groups of records, because this provides insight into the context in which documents exist and immense quantities involved left little choice. Recent developments, however, suggest the individual document should be re-visited. This thesis focuses on how formal descriptive systems might be enhanced to allow closer consideration of individual institutional textual records. It reviews the history of description, explores benefits to researchers seeking information from particular documents (e.g. the will) and explores tools created in response, such as contextual authority files.

This thesis introduces Relative links or rlinks, which are directed labeled links from one file to another in a file system. Rlinks provide a clean way to build and share related-file information without creating additional files and directories. Rlinks form overlay graphs between files of a file system, thus providing useful alternate views of the file system. This thesis implements rlinks for the Linux kernel and modifies the storage structure of the Ext2 file system to store the rlinks.
