Reassessing the Genres of the Hodayot (Thanksgiving Psalms from Qumran) / Reassessing the Genres of the Hodayot

Johnson, Michael January 2019 (has links)
The psalms of the Hodayot tradition (the Thanksgiving Psalms from Qumran) have been customarily divided into two categories: the “Teacher Hymns” written by a leader of the sect at Qumran, and the “Community Hymns” associated with the ordinary members of the sect. These categories are considered problematic because of well-recognized problems pertaining to authorship and to the poor fit of many of the psalms in the categories. I propose a new set of categories for the Hodayot that classify the psalms on the basis of genre. It is my contention that genre offers a better frame of reference because it defines the psalms against the backdrop of the genres of early Jewish psalms and not solely in terms of the sectarian community. To propose new generic categories, I employ John Swales’s rhetorical moves analysis to classify the psalms on the basis of how their formal structures (what he calls “rhetorical moves”) work together to achieve common rhetorical objectives. Swales defines a composition’s genre primarily by its rhetorical objectives rather than a definitional checklist of features. I use rhetorical moves analysis to describe where the Hodayot psalms fall along the spectrum of descriptive and declarative praise in Claus Westermann’s schema for the genres of the biblical psalms. I conclude that there are two interlocking generic categories in the Hodayot: eschatological psalms of thanksgiving and psalms of hymnic confession. These generic categories have overlapping rhetorical strategies consisting of rhetorical moves that work closely together to achieve the primary communicative purpose of praising God descriptively and declaratively. In this respect, they serve the Maskil’s secondary rhetorical objective of instructing the audience in the sectarian discourses of praise and supplication, making the Hodayot tradition a part of the Maskil’s programme of instructing sectarians and evaluating their insight into the divine plan. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / In this thesis I study the Thanksgiving Psalms from Qumran (1QHodayot a ), a collection of Jewish psalms from the Dead Sea Scrolls. The collection is typically divided into two categories: the “Teacher Hymns” written by a leader of a sect, and the “Community Hymns” that are associated with his followers. Scholars agree that these categories are inadequate, but no alternatives have been offered. I propose to use a more flexible approach that can classify all of the psalms by genre. The psalms are classified on a spectrum between two modes of praise by their objectives and strategies of persuasion. I argue that the psalms participate in two interlocking genres (the eschatological psalms of thanksgiving and the psalms of hymnic confession) and that all the psalms enable the speaker (the Maskil/Instructor) to achieve the two objectives of praising God and instructing his audience how to do the same.

ReMasters of Reality

gaughan, patrick 01 January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
In his essay collection Another Future, Alan Gilbert argues that culture, at it’s best, “interrogates the gap between the ideal and the real.” Ad copy, public text, Hallmark cards, narrative film, etc flood ‘the masses’ with the ideal: the dream of love, the dream of the new, happiness, happiness, happiness, while it purports to be ‘real.’ Conversely, a fair portion of art positions itself staunchly against the marketplace, it too claiming ‘realness,’ a superiority to ‘representation,’ a championing of ‘authenticity’ and ‘the individual experience.’ Art and poetry can be a venue to complicate this dichotomy, demystify all cultural products, and question the usage of massive words such as ‘real,’ ‘dream,’ ‘new,’ love.’ Maybe the most effective way to interrogate the gap between ‘ideal’ and ‘real’ is to read “the social poetically and poetry socially.” While post-modernism concentrated on experimentation with form and bridging a ‘high’ and ‘low’ divide, Gilbert argues that what comes next is an emphasis on the “social ramifications of cultural products.” As Kenneth Goldsmith says, “Context is the new content.” But I’m not interested in simplistic Conceptualist copy and paste. The function of art shifts to an aggregation and recontextualization of information: how ‘ideal’ and ‘real’ are represented, implemented, and manipulated across various social contexts. Artist John Baldessari asks: “Where does art reside? Is it physically there in that painting? Is it in my head? Could it be a trace memory? Could it be a photo? What is necessary for it? Can you just talk about it?” For me, there’s little difference between creating a cultural product, writing ‘about’ someone else’s cultural product, or interviewing artists about cultural products they made. Warhol thought of his body of work as equally visual and vocal: Andy is not Andy without his interviews. Conversation as poem. The conversation in the media around a poem as poem. Example: a poem by Kristen Stewart, a Hollywood actress, cannot be divorced from the reactions and retaliations it spawned. The content of Stewart’s poem, her word choice or where she broke the line fades to the background as voices across the Internet use the poem as an opportunity to judge and humiliate her. I’m concerned with how capital P Poetry is represented in the mainstream, how people experience poetry outside the context of the small press world, and reclaiming such experiences as Poetry. Can a commercial that features Whitman be labelled as a poem? Can my writing about how Whitman is represented in an iPad commercial be a poem? Or, how does listening to a poem while observing one’s surroundings influence one’s experience of the poem? In the ‘I listen’ series, I try to acknowledge that poems do not create a world, but exist within one. And I think of this book as lyric poetry, but my ‘lyric I’ must account for itself and its contexts. It must interview and interrogate itself. Even knowing what the lyric I is requires a privileged position. This must be acknowledged, and leads to a reckoning with former selves, former heroes. The ‘multitudes’ I contain are not my fellow citizens, but all the cultural products I’ve consumed in thirty years and how those products and individuals have changed me. I’m approaching cultural products and their contexts from a subjective, lyric, populist lens, trying to articulate each subject’s intention, because for me it’s in the absurdity of intention where the humor, or the poetry, or the ‘real,’ or ‘profound experience of art’ resides.

Gyroscope Calibration and Dead Reckoning for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Kapaldo, Aaron J. 25 August 2005 (has links)
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are currently being used for many underwater tasks such as mapping underwater terrain, detection of underwater objects, and assessment of water quality. Possible uses continue to grow as the vehicles become smaller, more agile, and less expensive to operate. However, trade-offs exist between making less expensive, miniature AUVs and the quality at which they perform. One area affected by cost and size is the onboard navigation system. To achieve the challenges of low-cost rate sensors, this thesis examines calibration methods that are suitable for identifying calibration coefficients in low-cost MEMS gyros. A brief introduction to underwater navigation is presented and is followed by the development of a model to describe the operation of a rate gyro. The model uses the integral relationship between angular rate and angular position measurements. A compass and two tilt sensors provide calibrated angular position data against which the three single axis gyros are compared to obtain an error signal describing errors present in the angular rate measurements. A calibration routine that adaptively identifies error parameters in the gyros is developed. Update laws are chosen to recursively apply estimated error parameters to minimize the system error signal. Finally, this calibration method is applied to a simple dead reckoning algorithm in an attempt to measure the improvements calibration provides. / Master of Science

Significant Immediate and Long-term Improvement in Quality of Life and Disease Coping in Patients with Vitiligo after Group Climatotherapy at the Dead Sea.

Krüger, Christian, Smythe, James W., Spencer, Jennifer D., Hasse, Sybille, Panske, Angela, Chiuchiarelli, Giorgia, Schallreuter, Karin U. 03 1900 (has links)
No / Quality of life in patients with vitiligo is impaired. This study explored the immediate effect of 20 days of climatotherapy at the Dead Sea on quality of life, coping with the disease, general well-being and individual stress levels in a group of 71 patients with vitiligo and 42 matched controls. The long-term effect was assessed after 12 months in 33/71 patients and 12/42 controls. Study instruments were Dermatology Life Quality Index, Beck Depression Inventory and the Adjustment to Chronic Skin Disorders Questionnaire. Stress measurements were based on cortisol and β-endorphin concentrations in saliva samples. Quality of life was significantly improved at day 20 at the Dead Sea compared with day 1, and this was still significant after 12 months. Moreover, social anxiety/avoidance, anxious-depressive mood and helplessness as measured by the Adjustment to Chronic Skin Disorders Questionnaire were significantly reduced. There was no difference in levels of cortisol and β-endorphin between patients and controls, indicating that stress per se is not a significant contributor in vitiligo. In conclusion, therapy in patient groups offers an effective tool for long-lasting improvement in quality of life and patients’ well-being.

Caracterização fenotípica de linhagens mutantes das RNA helicases DEAD-box de Caulobacter crescentus em condições de baixa temperatura. / Phenotypic characterization of mutant lines of DEAD-box RNA helicases from Caulobacter crescentus under low temperature conditions.

Durán, Angel Alfonso Aguirre 20 July 2017 (has links)
The RNA helicases of the DEAD-box family are enzymes that modify RNA secondary structures and help the formation of ribonucleoprotein complexes, and are very important in basal processes such as RNA degradation and ribosome biogenesis. The cryotolerant α-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus is an interesting experimental model to understand the role of these enzymes at low temperature. The phenotypic characterization of strains with single mutations of four DEAD-box RNA helicases showed that RNA helicase RhlE is required for growth at low temperature. The double mutants showed reduction in growth at both normal and low temperatures, with loss of viability and morphological changes. Through cross-complementation assays it has been shown that their physiological roles are to some extent redundant. The rhlE mutant also showed reduction in biofilm formation. The relative expression of the genes encoding the RNA helicases showed an increase in the expression of three of these genes under cold stress, and the analysis of the ribosomal profiles showed the possible participation of these three RNA helicases in ribosome biogenesis.

Män, kvinnor och levande döda. : En kvalitativ analys av tv-serien The Walking Dead / Men, women and the living dead : A qualitative analysis of the tv-series The Walking Dead

Vågström, Jonas January 2013 (has links)
The Walking Dead is a popular American tv-series set in the near future, or an alternative present. Society has fallen and colapsed into a more post-apocalyptic state. Till this date the seires has reached its third season, and each episode has several million viewers around the world. In this essay the author tries to see how the tv-series reprensatation of men and women looks like. Media, such as tv-series, acts as great source of inspiration when people tries to understand the world around them. If men and women are representated diffrently that may effect how the viewers treat people in general. The purpose of this study wass to examine how men and women were portrayed in the series. What wass classed as typical male and female and how men and women relate to each other in different situations. In order to properly answer to the studys purpose previous research on gender, femininities, masculinities and stereotypes were applied. The material were then examined in a qualitative content analysis with a semiotic approach where the text were studied to elucidate its denotative and connotative meanings. In short, thhe study shows that men and women are equipped with very different abilities. The woman is often portrayed as weak while the man, almost always, is portrayed as the stronger one.

Dynamiskt tröskelvärde baserat på intresseområden för dead reckoning i racingspel / Dynamic dead reckoning thresholds based on area of interest in racing games

Wallberg, Daniel January 2018 (has links)

Simulation of a Current Controller with Dead-Time Compensation

Heide, Johanna, Granström, Mattias January 2021 (has links)
This master's thesis is divided into two parts. The first part concerns the development of a simulation model of a current controller and a physical drive unit, both implemented in Simulink with the use of legacy code and regulated with field oriented control. The second part concerns the development of a dead-time compensation algorithm. The dead-time is a small delay added to the pulse width modulation signal to diminish the risk of a short circuit in the power electronics. The dead-time causes a voltage distortion, resulting in distorted phase currents, a lower bandwidth and ultimately a decreased machine accuracy. The new simulation environment was able to simulate a real life scenario with promising results. Hence, it could be used to evaluate the dead-time compensation algorithms. Three different dead-time compensation algorithms were implemented and they all showed an increased smoothness of the phase currents as well as an increased controller bandwidth. Both these features are desirable outcomes and all three algorithms show potential to improve accuracy when implemented in a real system.
