A search for direct and radiative decays of the neutral B meson to invisible final states using a hadronic tagging method at the BABAR detector

xii, 118 p. : ill. (some col.) A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation describes a search for the decays B 0 [arrow right] invisible and B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ, where invisible refers to a final state consisting of long lived particles with a low cross-section for interaction with matter, leading to a low probability of detection in typical particle detectors. While the branching fractions for these decays predicted by the Standard Model are far below what could be feasably measured by current experiments, new physics such as right-handed neutrinos propagating in large extra space-time dimensions or light R-parity violating neutralinos in supersymmetry could greatly enhance the branching fractions. The decays are searched for in data corresponding to 423.5 fb -1 integrated luminosity produced at the Υ(4 S ) resonance collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory, corresponding to 2.30 × 10 8 B 0 B¯ 0 pairs. Using those events that contain a hadronically reconstructed neutral B meson, evidence for the signal decays is sought in the remainder of the event. In (5.00 ± 0.02) × 10 5 events with a fully reconstructed neutral B meson, a total of 39 events consistent with the B 0 [arrow right] invisible decay mode are seen in data with an expected background of 28.5 ± 7.8(stat.)±9.2(syst.) events, and 8 events consistent with the B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ decay mode are seen in data mode with an expected background of 14.1 ± 5.5(stat.)±8.1(syst.) events, from which upper limits of [Special characters omitted.] ( B 0 [arrow right] invisible) < 11.7 × 10 -5 and of [Special characters omitted.] ( B 0 [arrow right] invisible+γ) < 4.3 × 10 -5 at the 90% confidence level are obtained. / Adviser: David Strom

Semileptonic B Decays to Light Neutral Hadrons: B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu

Cole, Shoshanna Beth January 2007 (has links)
Master of Science / An analysis of B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu decays using the neutrino reconstruction technique is presented. The dataset consists of 535 million BB pairs in 492 fb^−1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− collider. The measured B to pi0 l nu and B to eta l nu branching fractions are B(B to pi0 l nu) = (0.68 ± 0.09 ± 0.11 ± 0.04)×10^−4 and B(B to eta l nu) = (0.42 ± 0.13)×10^−4. The errors on the pi0 measurement are statistical, experimental systematic, and due to b to u l nu modelling, respectively; that on the eta is statistical only. The B to pi0 l nu branching fraction is measured in three q^2 bins: q^2 < 8 GeV^2, 8 GeV^2 ≤ q^2 < 16 GeV^2, and 16 GeV^2 ≤ q^2. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix element |Vub| is extracted from the B to pi0 l nu branching fraction using a Light-Cone Sum Rules form factor extrapolated to the full q^2 range, and is found to be |Vub| = (3.29 ± 0.23 ± 0.27 ± 0.05)×10^−3, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and theoretical, respectively.

Vers la premiere mesure des rapports de branchement B _ (s) -- >µ -µ + avec LHCb detecteur / Towards the first B _ (s) -- >µ -µ+ measurements with the LHCb detector

Adrover, Cosme 10 September 2012 (has links)
The rare decays B0s→μ+μ− and B0→μ+μ− are benchmark channels to constrain models beyond the Standard Model (BSM) with a larger Higgs sector. In the SM, the branching fraction of these decays is predicted with a good accuracy: B(B0(s)→μ+μ−)=(3.2±0.2)×10−9 and B(B0→μ+μ−)=(0.10±0.01)×10−10. Any deviation from these values can lead to indications of physics BSM. The core of this thesis comprises two main topics: the background rejection and the signal yields extraction. We have optimized a multivariate classifier based on the boosted decision trees technique allowing for a drastic reduction of the B→h+h′− (h≡π,K) background. After the selection process, about 76% of the combinatorial background for B0s→μ+μ− is removed, while keeping a signal efficiency of about 92%. A further discrimination between signal and background is accomplished with another multivariate classifier optimized to have a large background rejection in the low signal efficiency region. The work presented in this thesis describes the optimization of a boosted decision trees classifier that suppresses 99.9% of the background, after the aforementioned selection process, for a signal efficiency of 50%. We have proposed a method to estimate the signal yields present in our data sample using an extended maximum likelihood fit.

A la recherche des désintégrations des mésons beaux vers des états finaux purement leptoniques / Searches for B meson decays to purely leptonic final states in LHCb

Perrin-terrin, Mathieu 23 September 2013 (has links)
The B->l l decays are helicity suppressed and process through flavour changing neutral currents. They are extremely rare in the standard model (SM). Thus physics beyond SM could modify their branching ratio up to an observable level. As the theoretical predictions are very precise, these modes are golden channels to probe the SM.The works presented in this thesis have contributed to the establishment of the first evidence of the Bs->mu mu decay. A statistical method has been built to extract and combine limits on the decays branching fraction and to compute signals significance. On the basis of this work, an original method was developed to re-optimised the categories used to classified the candidates which improved the analysis sensitivity by 14%. A study of the interplay between the flavour mixing of the Bs and its decay demonstrated that the analysis results are model dependent. Accounting for this dependency allows to improve constraints on new physics. Finally, an inclusive topological reconstruction was developed and tested in particular to reconstruct Bs->tau tau candidates with tau->pi pi pi nu.

The Charm of Excited Glue : Charmonium in e+e– and ppbar collisions

Lundborg, Agnes January 2007 (has links)
This thesis treats the mass range of charmonium states and excited gluonic fields in two experiments, BESII and PANDA, and outlines a phenomenological model that connects them. In BESII, e+e– form a charmonium initial state, which is utilised as a source for secondary particles. The analysed channels, ψ´→ γK+K– and ψ´→ γπ+π–, give access to intermediate scalar states such as the two glueball candidates: f0(1500) and f0(1710). The f0(1710) is indeed observed in decay into both π+π– and K+K– and the f0(1500) is accepted as a necessary part of the π+π– signal at the moderate 5% level. In addition, we observe the two tensor states f2(1270) (in both channels) and f2´(1525) (in K+K–), but the need for the f2´(1525) is not firmly established. The region around 2 GeV/c2 is fitted with an f4(2050) and an f0(2200) in π+π–. This region is fairly flat in K+K– with a slight peak at the f0(2200). Branching ratios for all eight channels are given. A fit to the angular distribution of ψ´→ γ f2(1270) → γ π+π–gave two possible solutions for the relative importance of helicity projections zero, one and two. The future ppbar experiment PANDA is still in the development phase; important physics goals have been defined and we are now taking on the laborious task of constructing a detector that is able to fulfil them. A simulation investigation of a theoretically preferred JPC=1–+ charmonium hybrid (Hc) is presented: ppbar → Hcπ0/η, Hc → χc1 (π0π0)S–wave, χc1 → J/ψπ0, with a final state of seven photons and a lepton pair. To detect this channel next to full coverage of CM phase space is needed and as little material as possible before the electromagnetic calorimeter. A second simulation study of ppbar → ηc → γγ at PANDA, suggests that the channel should be possible to detect with a signal-to-background ratio of 5±1 and a detection efficiency of at least 10%. By assuming a constant matrix element we obtain a relation between the decay width for ψ → ppbar+m, which has been measured at BES for several cases, and the cross section for ppbar charmonium production in association with the same light meson, m (at for example PANDA). Cross sections of ~300–3000 pb were predicted for J/ψ production and ~30 pb for ψ' production. Isoscalars seem to be preferred to isovectors in J/ψ production, this might however be an artefact of simplifications within the model. A comparison with the only measured cross section, ppbar → J/ψπ0, suggests that the model is useful as a first estimate.

Light Cone Qcd Sum Rules And Meson Physics

Kanik, Inanc 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we applied Light Cone QCD sum rules (LCSR) to several problems in meson physics. Semileptonic B-&gt / eta l v decays are important to get information on Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements. We calculated form factors of this decay in LCSR frame. Our results are confirmed by later studies and these similar studies had been used for enhancing result on b to u quark transition matrix element of CKM matrix by BaBar collaboration. We used LCSR method also for calculating coupling constant of radiative rho -&gt / eta photon decay since the analysis of the vector particle to pseudoscalar particle radiative decay with eta and eta&#039 / mesons in final state can provide insights to the long standing issue of the eta and eta&#039 / mixing. Our result g_{rho eta photon}=(1.4 &plusmn / 0.2) is very close to experimental value g_{ rho eta photon} = (1.42 &plusmn / 0.12). We also calculated magnetic moment of the rho meson in LCSR frame which is an important parameter since it is strongly related to internal structure of hadron. Our result 2.3 &plusmn / 0.5 in units of (e/2m_rho), is in better agreement with lattice QCD results than traditional QCD sum rules. Quark contents of light scalar mesons are still under debate and we analyzed phi -&gt / K K decays which is important for understanding the quark content of the f0 meson. Our final result is g_{phi KK} = 4.9 &plusmn / 0.8 which is in well agreement with existing experimental result g_{phi KK} = 4.8.
