The Sustainability of Decentralized Bioenergy Production : Case Study: The 'Bioenergy Village' Bollewick

The concept of Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary science. Transcending various academic fields the concept shows paths how the needs of present and future generations can be met through economic development on a finite natural resource base. Global warming and rising sea levels are just two of a series of phenomena that are directly attributable to human-induced increasing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere as consequence of the combustion of fossil fuels. Therefore, reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable resources such as bioenergy are of vital importance if detrimental environmental effects are to be mitigated. The production of biogas in a decentralized context is receiving much attention in Germany as a means to reduce greenhouse gases and to counteract correlated negative environmental effects, respectively. In addition, socio-economic benefits such as local employment creation have the potential to empower rural communities. Subsidised by the German Renewable Sources Act and its various remuneration schemes, two 500kWel CHP biogas plants are producing through anaerobic digestion of maize silage and manure electricity and heat in the East German village Bollewick, which is the case study. The sustainability of this decentralized system is analyzed by applying a set of indicators. Socio-economic benefits for the population, economic efficiency of the digestion process and impacts of substrate costs on the profitability, greenhouse gas emissions due to land use change and biodiversity loss being some of these indicators. The thesis concludes that none of the sustainability indicators are sufficiently fulfilled in Bollewick. Especially the cultivation of the energy crop maize has despite crop rotations immense negative environmental effects. Therefore, the decentralized biogas production in the rurally coined village Bollewick is not sustainable.

Decentralized Web Search

Centrally controlled search engines will not be sufficient and reliable for indexing and searching the rapidly growing World Wide Web in near future. A better solution is to enable the Web to index itself in a decentralized manner. Existing distributed approaches for ranking search results do not provide flexible searching, complete results and ranking with high accuracy. This thesis presents a decentralized Web search mechanism, named DEWS, which enables existing webservers to collaborate with each other to form a distributed index of the Web. DEWS can rank the search results based on query keyword relevance and relative importance of websites in a distributed manner preserving a hyperlink overlay on top of a structured P2P overlay. It also supports approximate matching of query keywords using phonetic codes and n-grams along with list decoding of a linear covering code. DEWS supports incremental retrieval of search results in a decentralized manner which reduces network bandwidth required for query resolution. It uses an efficient routing mechanism extending the Plexus routing protocol with a message aggregation technique. DEWS maintains replica of indexes, which reduces routing hops and makes DEWS robust to webservers failure. The standard LETOR 3.0 dataset was used to validate the DEWS protocol. Simulation results show that the ranking accuracy of DEWS is close to the centralized case, while network overhead for collaborative search and indexing is logarithmic on network size. The results also show that DEWS is resilient to changes in the available pool of indexing webservers and works efficiently even in the presence of heavy query load.

Decentralized Decision-making for Reverse Production Systems

Reverse production systems are often comprised of several tiers with independent members competing at each tier. This research develops and designs a decision-making process for decentralized reverse production systems where each participant in the network determines its decisions in a self-interested way. This dissertation includes three major parts. The first part develops a prototype model for a decentralized reverse production system with two tiers, collectors and processors, focusing on the coordination of transactions of recycled items between these two tiers. The collectors determine the individual material flow allocation mechanisms, based on predictions of the range of prices from the processors, that relate the flow amount to the overall vector of acquisition prices that will be offered by the processors to all the collectors. The processors compete for the flow from the collectors and reach an equilibrium state where no entity is willing to change its decisions. In the second part, we extend the prototype model for a general multi-tiered recycling network comprised of the upstream boundary tier, several intermediate tiers, and the downstream boundary tier where each of the tiers has multiple independent entities. Recycled items flow from the top tier to the downstream tier, but acquisition prices are set from the downstream tier back to the upstream tier. Finally the third part provides a comparison of centralized and decentralized models for reverse production systems and addresses several numerical insights of different system subsidy schemes.

Decentralized, Cooperative Control of Multivehicle Systems: Design and Stability Analysis

This dissertation addresses the design and stability analysis of decentralized, cooperative control laws for multivehicle systems. Advances in communication, navigation, and surveillance systems have enabled greater autonomy in multivehicle systems, and there is a shift toward decentralized, cooperative systems for computational efficiency and robustness. In a decentralized control scheme, control inputs are determined onboard each vehicle; therefore, decentralized controllers are more efficient for large numbers of vehicles, and the system is more robust to communication failures and reconfiguration. The design of decentralized, cooperative control laws is explored for a nonlinear vehicle model that can be represented in a double-integrator form. Cooperative controllers are functions of spacing errors with respect to other vehicles in the system, where the communication structure defines the information that is available to each vehicle. Control inputs are selected to achieve internal stability, or zero steady-state spacing errors, between vehicles in the system. Closed-loop equations of motion for the cooperative system can be written in a structural form, where damping and stiffness matrices contain control gains acting on the velocity and positions of the vehicles, respectively. The form of the stiffness matrix is determined by the communication structure, where different communication structures yield different control forms. Communication structures are compared using two structural analysis tools: modal cost and frequency-response functions, which evaluate the response of the multivehicle systems to disturbances. The frequency-response information is shown to reveal the string stability of different cooperative control forms. The effects of time delays in the feedback states of the cooperative control laws on system stability are also investigated. Closed-loop equations of motion are modeled as delay differential equations, and two stability notions are presented: delay-independent and delay-dependent stability. Lastly, two additional cooperative control forms are investigated. The first control form spaces vehicles along an arbitrary path, where distances between vehicles are constant for a given spacing parameter. This control form shows advantages over spacing vehicles using control laws designed in an inertial frame. The second control form employs a time-based spacing scheme, which spaces vehicles at constant-time intervals at a desired endpoint. The stability of these control forms is presented.

Optumal Growth and Environmental Tax Regulation

This research uses the optimal control theory to construct two kinds of dynamic economic systems, which are an economic system without externalities and with externalities. Within each economic system both the centralized economy model and the decentralized economy model are included. The centralized economy (a social planner) model representes a kind of ideal economy, and the goal what the social planner pursues is that the resource allocation of the society satisfies the Pareto Efficiency criteria. On the other hand, the decentralized economy model (consists of a representative producer and a representative consumer) demonstrates the real economy, where economic agents persue their own best interests. While constructing the models, goods market equilibrium, labors market equilibrium, the dynamic accumulation process of capital, and the dynamic accumulation course of pollution are under consideration. Then, I apply optimal control method to get the first order conditions, and compare these f.o.c¡¦.s to verify whether they are unanimous. This paper proves that when externalities of pollution does not exist in the dynamic economic system, the decentralized economy model can achieve the Pareto Efficiency. On the contrary, when externalities of pollution emerges in the dynamic economic system, the decentralized economy model cannot reach Pareto Efficiency. If the externalities of pollution is internalized by the dynamic decentralized economic system economy, it will coincide with Pareto Efficiency. Besides, Pigouvian tax is still an effective policy instrument. Finally, I discuss all dynamic models in this paper to find out whether there exists a long-term and stable steady state. I find stable steady state, saddle-point equilibria, do exist under certain restrictions.

Water Supplies in the Southwest Making a Finite Supply Sustainable for a Growing Population

Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone Project / Across the world, populations continue to grow while water supplies stay fixed. In the American Southwest, water supplies are at an all time low, yet warm, favorable conditions continue to lure residents to the area. With some of the country’s lowest fresh water reserves, it is imperative that changes are made to water usage trends and associated energy inefficiencies. An analysis of water usage in Tucson was conducted to evaluate potential solutions for reducing consumption and to correspondingly shrink energy usage. Case studies were investigated, census numbers were used to roughly calculate statistics, existing knowledge on water conservation techniques were researched, and alternative water filtration as well as distribution systems were scrutinized for their viability amongst current infrastructure. The potential to reduce water usage is greatest with the largest user of water in Tucson, the single-family residence. On average the single-family residence is capable of effectively saving nearly 25,000 gallons of water per year with efficient fixtures, another 25,000 gallons per year by reducing outdoor water use by half, and another 10,625 gallons by utilizing rainwater harvesting. Combine those savings and multiply them by the 225,000-240,000 single-family residents estimated to be in Tucson and the savings reach more than five billion gallons a year, effectively almost cutting water consumption in Tucson by a fifth. Further, to keep remaining usage impacts negligible, implementation of an indirect or direct potable water reuse system could satisfy populations for decades by reusing water that would normally be discarded as effluent. Water consumption must be curved so that it can satisfy a growing population’s needs. Amongst residents of Tucson, single-family residences have the greatest potential to reduce water and associated energy needs. Through conservation techniques, water harvesting, reducing outdoor water usage, and potable reuse, limited water supplies can satisfy future generations to come.

The topic of decentralized system is not widely discussed nowadays. The present paper is one of the first attempts to discuss the topic and it is devoted to work with children. It deals with decentralized systems and programmes for theirs modelling. Firstly, the paper tries to find out whether decentralized system really exit by deeper analysis of special programmes for work with programme, explains how it works and gives a translated list of commands. Several modellings were made: providing an anthill with food, the drawing of graphic ornaments and the fire in a forest. The results showed that there is no need for centralized ruling when seeking for the aim of the system. It is enough that agents perform the same actions. The results of the paper could be used at school in an integrated lesion of biology, information technologies and geography or in an information technologies lesion.
