A technological, organisational, and environmental analysis of decision making methodologies and satisfaction in the context of IT induced business transformations

Bernroider, Edward, Schmöllerl, Patrick January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Although Operational Research (OR) has successfully provided many methodologies to address complex decision problems, in particular based on the rationality principle, there has been too little discussion regarding their limited consideration in IT evaluation practice and associated decision making satisfaction levels in an organisational context. The aim of this paper is to address these issues through providing a current account of diffusion and infusion of OR methodologies in IT decision making practice, and by analysing factors affecting decision making satisfaction from a Technological, Organisational, and Environmental (TOE) framework in the context of IT induced business transformations. We developed a structural equation model and conducted an empirical survey, which supported four out of five developed research hypotheses. Our results show that while Decision Support Systems (DSS), holistic IT evaluation methods, and management support seem to positively affect individual satisfaction, legislative regulation has an adverse effect. Results also revealed a persistent methodology diffusion and infusion gap. The paper discusses implications in each of these aspects and presents opportunities for future work. (authors' abstract)

An Examination of the Perceived Fairness of Pregnancy Leave Practices

Wheeler, Pamela N 01 April 2015 (has links)
As the number of women entering postsecondary education continues to increase (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014), universities will be tasked with ensuring that their pregnancy leave policies and practices are aligned with the principles of organizational justice. When organizations are aware of the perceptions of both decision makers and those affect by decisions, they are able to alter policies and practices in a way that promotes perceptions of fairness. The present study examines department head and faculty member perceptions of pregnancy leave practices in a university setting. This study is a replication/follow-up of two studies conducted in 2005 and 1995 on perceptions of pregnancy leave practices within a university setting. The results indicate that department heads and faculty members similarly perceive the fairness of options to cover a pregnant faculty member’s responsibilities. Department heads and faculty also rated their willingness to use an option similarly. Additionally, department heads are more willing to use options that they perceived as fair and are less likely to use options they perceived as unfair. The findings of this study indicate that it is important for those affected by decisions such as pregnancy leave practices to experience voice in the decision-making process. The results of this study should be useful to universities and department heads when determining how to cover the responsibilities of a faculty member on pregnancy leave.

Decision making methods for water resources management under deep uncertainty

Roach, Thomas Peter January 2016 (has links)
Substantial anthropogenic change of the Earth’s climate is modifying patterns of rainfall, river flow, glacial melt and groundwater recharge rates across the planet, undermining many of the stationarity assumptions upon which water resources infrastructure has been historically managed. This hydrological uncertainty is creating a potentially vast range of possible futures that could threaten the dependability of vital regional water supplies. This, combined with increased urbanisation and rapidly growing regional populations, is putting pressures on finite water resources. One of the greatest international challenges facing decision makers in the water industry is the increasing influences of these “deep” climate change and population growth uncertainties affecting the long-term balance of supply and demand and necessitating the need for adaptive action. Water companies and utilities worldwide are now under pressure to modernise their management frameworks and approaches to decision making in order to identify more sustainable and cost-effective water management adaptations that are reliable in the face of uncertainty. The aim of this thesis is to compare and contrast a range of existing Decision Making Methods (DMMs) for possible application to Water Resources Management (WRM) problems, critically analyse on real-life case studies their suitability for handling uncertainties relating to climate change and population growth and then use the knowledge generated this way to develop a new, resilience-based WRM planning methodology. This involves a critical evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of a range of methods and metrics developed to improve on current engineering practice, to ultimately compile a list of suitable recommendations for a future framework for WRM adaptation planning under deep uncertainty. This thesis contributes to the growing vital research and literature in this area in several distinct ways. Firstly, it qualitatively reviews a range of DMMs for potential application to WRM adaptation problems using a set of developed criteria. Secondly, it quantitatively assesses two promising and contrasting DMMs on two suitable real-world case studies to compare highlighted aspects derived from the qualitative review and evaluate the adaptation outputs on a practical engineering level. Thirdly, it develops and reviews a range of new potential performance metrics that could be used to quantitatively define system resilience to help answer the water industries question of how best to build in more resilience in future water resource adaptation planning. This leads to the creation and testing of a novel resilience driven methodology for optimal water resource planning, combining optimal aspects derived from the quantitative case study work with the optimal metric derived from the resilience metric investigation. Ultimately, based on the results obtained, a list of suitable recommendations is compiled on how to improve the existing methodologies for future WRM planning under deep uncertainty. These recommendations include the incorporation of more complex simulation models into the planning process, utilisation of multi-objective optimisation algorithms, improved uncertainty characterisation and assessments, an explicit robustness examination and the incorporation of additional performance metrics to increase the clarity of the strategy assessment process.

Hodnocení účtů pro spolky / The Evaluation of Accounts for Associations

ŠVECOVÁ, Dominika January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to devise general evaluation procedure of current accounts for associations and then to compare the theoretical results with the results of the questionnaire survey. The aim of the questionnaire survey is to find out what accounts the associations use and why. The theoretical part of this thesis is focused on the scientific discipline called multi-criteria decision making, its basic terminology, the methods of setting the criterions' weights and selected multi-criteria decision making methods. Finally, the associations are described according to valid legislation. In the practical part, selected accounts for specific clients are evaluated by using three multi-criteria decision making methods and the questionnaire survey is evaluated too. The conclusion is dedicated a comparison of the theoretical evaluation results with the questionnaire survey results and the author's own view of this issue. Familiarization of the author with the associations' activities during a personal meeting with them is the main benefit of this thesis for the author. The finding that the accounts of some of them are not as advantageous as they were before is the benefit for the associations. Some of them decided to visit their bank and change the account to the account recommended by the author.

The use of information systems, especially ERP, has being the focus of several studies in the last decade. Thus, it is considered that the matter "ERPs" for construction, specifically considering the use of methods of decision making with multiple criteria, is far from being fully consolidated, and this research contributes to society and the academic community to enrich this discussion. The main objective of this work is to apply a form of prioritization of management processes to assist the selection of ERP system in construction company aimed at improving the flow of information held between the management system and production system, providing improved management processes management. The method of making multiple decision criteria provided AHP prioritization processes that must be considered in the selection and adoption of an ERP. The research supports the view of many studies that link the analysis of the internal processes of a company as relevant to the adoption of management information systems, as these should be oriented to business processes and not the opposite. Considering the importance of the issues raised by the analysis of the proposed case, the prioritization process, systematized by applying the AHP method can be considered as one (and not only) the guidelines in the selection of ERP systems available in the market process.
