The Gumboot Navy: Securing or Sundering British ColumbiaKier, Gregory David 26 August 2014 (has links)
In 1938 the Canadian government approved a plan to train fishermen as naval reservists in British Columbia. The fishermen were recruited as whole crews and trained to shoot accurately, form fours, navigate, signal properly and drop depth charges – all aboard their own converted fishing vessels. On paper, and to the general public, the specialized reserve known as the Fishermen’s Reserve or “Gumboot Navy”, was a patriotic group of fishermen doing their bit and better preparing for emergencies. However, in reality, the Canadian government instituted the Fishermen’s Reserve in 1938 for a very specific reason – to round up and remove Japanese Canadians and their boats from the coast prior to the outbreak of war between Canada and Japan. This thesis explores various aspects of the Fishermen’s Reserve from 1938 to 1941 in order to better understand the Canadian Government’s wartime policies. As there are almost no secondary sources on the subject, this paper uses extensive primary sources to uncover and analyze the Royal Canadian Navy’s recruitment policy, unconventional regulations and racist underpinnings in instituting the Fishermen’s Reserve. / Graduate / 0334 / 0750 / 0740 / gregory.kier@gmail.com

Nuclear weapons and British defence policy : an examination of nuclear aspects of British foreign and defence policy 1940-1990Chalmers, Malcolm G. January 1987 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to understand the role of nuclear weapons in Britain's defence and foreign policies. It works from the assumption that decisions in relation to nuclear weapons, can only be understood in the context of a broader overview of the British state's policies since the 1940's. In turn Britain's nuclear policies have made a decisive impact on defence policy as a whole and have had an important effect on international developments. It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to a better-understanding of the causes and effects of the nuclear weapons policies adopted by the UK since the 19401s. The thesis will focus on the politics and political economy of nuclear weapons and British defence policy. This central concern has required that a number of other important aspects of the subject have been given only peripheral consideration. The thesis does not attempt to provide a detailed technological history of Britain's nuclear force. Nor is it intended to provide particular new insights on the nuclear decisionmaking process. Rather it seeks to explore the underlying factors which have shaped both the technology and the perceptions of decision-makers. There is no shortage of historical accounts of Britain's nuclear force. The unique contribution which it is hoped that this thesis makes, however, does not lie so much in its subject matter as in the way that this subject matter is approached. In my view that approach is sufficiently different from those of previous works in this area as to be both original and of some interest to other scholars in this field.

The Development Of Common European Security And Defence Policy (cesdp): Before And After Saint Malo DeclarationUslu, Merve 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study examines the evolution of the Common European Security and Defence
Policy (CESDP) of the European Union before and after the Saint Malo
Declaration of December 1998. The co-operation in foreign policy and security
matters has always been a corollary element to the economic co-operation since the
beginning of the European Integration process. Within this context this study argues
that the conducting of co-operation in this field within the framework of European
Community/European Union (EC/EU) was dependent on the national actors, the
internal community/union factors, and the external dynamics. It is also asserted that,
the European political co-operation is based on, on the one hand, the
intergovernmentalist method of decision-making and implementation process, and on
the other to the incrementalism through which the Member States could reconcile
their diverging interests, which represent continuity within the EC/EU. The Saint
Malo constitutes one of the momentous events in the trajectory of European foreign
policy, security and defence co-operation, which launched the essentials of the
CESDP. Within this framework, this study will analyse how a legally unbinding
document has been incorporated into the legal framework of the European Union and
consequently became the part of the acquis. Furthermore, the policies of France,
Britain, and the United States within the process of establishment of the CESDP will
be examined. Then, this thesis argues that, Saint Malo has initiated a ground for
renegotiation of the terms of transatlantic relationship, which culminated in the
redefinition of global roles and responsibilities of Americans and Europeans.

Proteomics of wheat bran (Triticum aestivum var. Babbler)Jerkovic, Ante January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Hons))--Macquarie University, Division of Environmental & Life Sciences, Dept. of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences, 2006. / Bibliography: leaves 153-158. / Wheat is a major crop in Australia with around 25 million tonnes of grain harvested in an average year. Improved wheat grain cultivars and wheat grain milling can result in higher biological yields and flour quality. The introduction covers the general aspects of the wheat grain from bran development and structure through to millings and the importance of flour quality in flour-based products. It also highlights the problem with bran contamination in flour during milling and other factors that may have an effect on flour quality. Proteomics was used to identify proteins in three separate bran tissue fractions: the inner fraction (aleurone), intermediate fraction (nucellar tissue, testa, tube cells and cross cells) and the outer faction (hypodermis and epidermis). The aim of the project was to identify proteins in bran tissue fractions which may potentially be useful in improvements in wheat quality for farmers and consumers and flour yield for millers. The results show that more than 80% of the identified proteins in the outer and intermediate tissue factions are defence-and stress-related proteins (chitinase, xylanase, thaumatin-like protein, wheatwin 1, lipid-transfer protein, oxalatae oxidase (OXO), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POX)). Almost 60% of the proteins identified in the inner tissue fraction are 7S Globulin storage proteins and around 15% are protein synthesis-and energy-related. Water-soluble proteins were also identified and it was found that endochitinase, OXO, PPO and POX all leach out from the grain durings imbibition. This study has added to the knowledge of bran tissue-specific proteins and has broad implications for improving crop yield and flour quality. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / xiii, 158 leaves ill
