Derating NichePSO

Naicker, Clive 17 October 2007 (has links)
The search for multiple solutions is applicable to many fields (Engineering [54][67], Science [75][80][79][84][86], Economics [13][59], and others [51]). Multiple solutions allow for human judgement to select the best solution from a group of solutions that best match the search criteria. Finding multiple solutions to an optimisation problem has shown to be difficult to solve. Evolutionary computation (EC) and more recently Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithms have been used in this field to locate and maintain multiple solutions with fair success. This thesis develops and empirically analyses a new method to find multiple solutions within a convoluted search space. The method is a hybrid of the NichePSO [14] and the sequential niche technique (SNT)[8]. The original SNT was developed using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). It included restrictions such as knowing or approximating the number of solutions that exist. A further pitfall of the SNT is that it introduces false optima after modifying the search space, thereby reducing the accuracy of the solutions. However, this can be resolved with a local search in the unmodified search space. Other sequential niching algorithms require that the search be repeated sequentially until all solutions are found without considering what was learned in previous iterations, resulting in a blind and wasteful search. The NichePSO has shown to be more accurate than GA based algorithms [14][15]. It does not require knowledge of the number of solutions in the search space prior to the search process. However, the NichePSO does not scale well for problems with many optima [16]. The method developed in this thesis, referred to as the derating NichePSO, combines SNT with the NichePSO. The main objective of the derating NichePSO is to eliminate the inaccuracy of SNT and to improve the scalability of the NichePSO. The derating NichePSO is compared to the NichePSO, deterministic crowding [23] and the original SNT using various multimodal functions. The performance of the derating NichePSO is analysed and it is shown that the derating NichePSO is more accurate than SNT and more scalable than the NichePSO. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Computer Science / MSc / Unrestricted

Superkondensatorer istället för batterier som energireserv i lågvoltssystem / Supercapacitors as energy source replacement for batteries

Eliasson, Fadi, Lundmark, Liv January 2020 (has links)
This report examines if supercapacitors could replace the existing batteries used in a product as a power source. The theory of supercapacitors and the use of these as a power source in low volt systems is presented. A circuit was created and tested to verify the function. Simulations were performed to verify the choices for the circuit. Matlab and LTSpice was used for the simulations. The circuit was created using OrCad and Altium Designer. The theory, simulations and tests all pointed towards that indeed supercapacitors can replace the existing batteries and the requirements can be met. Although not all tests resulted in results, therefore not all of the requirements could be verified. Future tests are needed to be able to guarantee that the solution can meet the lifetime and temperature requirements or if it will be necessary to replace the supercapacitors with ones that have higher capacity.

Análise da influência de diferentes estratégias de arrefecimento no desempenho e durabilidade de inversores de sistemas fotovoltaicos conectados à rede

Perin, Aryston Luiz January 2016 (has links)
Photovoltaic inverters are electronic power devices that provide electrical energy in alternating current (AC) from a source of electrical energy in direct current (DC) - a photovoltaic generator, in this case. Inverters increase their temperature when in operation. This rise in temperature is not desirable, but inherent to its operation. Any electronic equipment has a safe operating temperature limit. When this limit is surpassed, operating instability, life reduction or even drastic failure may occur. The knowledge of the electrical conversion efficiency and the losses responsible for the heating is important for the proper sizing of grid-tie inverters in photovoltaic systems, as well as for the development of the inverter as a product. In order to increase the useful life of the device and its components, for greater reliability, safety, stability and security of operation, inverters have routines in their algorithms of control with automated strategies dedicated to the thermal management. These protection and thermal management routines, whenever activated, tend to reduce the power conversion capacity of the inverter, either by the activation of an auxiliary fan or by the displacement of the operating point at maximum power. Inverter manufacturers address this issue by the term "temperature derating". This thesis presents a methodology to evaluate the influence of the performance of different strategies to avoid excessive temperature of the inverter components on its performance and durability It is also made an evaluation of different thermal management strategies and protection used in commercial inverters. Results of experimental tests for determination of thermal parameters characteristic of the inverters are presented. A predictive model of transient operating inverter temperature is also described. From the experimental determination of thermal parameters, the predictive model of operating temperature was implemented to the FVCONECT, a dynamic simulation software for sizing and evaluation of photovoltaic systems developed in LABSOL / UFRGS. With this modification, the software was able to simulate the operation and estimate losses of energy due to the thermal management routines, their effects and the limitations imposed during the operation of grid-tie inverters. One of the results of the simulation is the evolution of the inverter temperature, allowing to evaluate the frequency and amplitude of thermal cycles to which the inverter is subjected and, as a consequence, an estimate of durability of the inverter.

Active converter based on the VIENNA rectifier topology interfacing a three-phase generator to a DC-bus

Visser, Jacobus Hendrik 25 October 2007 (has links)
AC-DC converters find application in every day life as a front-end to DC-DC and DC-AC converters. Active three-phase converters shape the three-phase input current to be sinusoidal and to be in-phase with the input voltage, as well as to provide a steady DC output voltage. This thesis investigates various active three-phase rectifier and control topologies and identifies a rectifier and control topology most suitable for use in converting a variable voltage variable frequency generator output to a DC voltage. In this dissertation, design relations are derived for determining the plant transfer response (for the suitable topology/controller), design equations are derived for designing/choosing the filter components, and guidelines are derived that will assist in choosing the right semi-conductor components and to give an estimation of expected system efficiency. The dissertation investigates the implementation of both analogue and digital control and provides implementation methodologies for both controllers. Expected results are verified by simulation and a build-up prototype. It was shown that the VIENNA rectifier is able to convert a generator type input, with variable input voltage amplitude and variable frequency, to a constant DC-bus voltage whilst controlling the input current to be sinusoidal and in phase with the input voltage. The rectifier was able to maintain a constant DC voltage at the output for input voltages as low as half the rated input voltage and for an equivalent output power of half the rated output power. This suggests that the VIENNA rectifier, controlled as a dual-boost rectifier, is suitable for applications that require power factor corrections and simultaneously operate from a wide input voltage range. / Dissertation (MEng (Electrical Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / MEng / unrestricted

Low Overhead Soft Error Mitigation Methodologies

Prasanth, V January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
CMOS technology scaling is bringing new challenges to the designers in the form of new failure modes. The challenges include long term reliability failures and particle strike induced random failures. Studies have shown that increasingly, the largest contributor to the device reliability failures will be soft errors. Due to reliability concerns, the adoption of soft error mitigation techniques is on the increase. As the soft error mitigation techniques are increasingly adopted, the area and performance overhead incurred in their implementation also becomes pertinent. This thesis addresses the problem of providing low cost soft error mitigation. The main contributions of this thesis include, (i) proposal of a new delayed capture methodology for low overhead soft error detection, (ii) adopting Error Control Coding (ECC) for delayed capture methodology for correction of single event upsets, (iii) analyzing the impact of different derating factors to reduce the hardware overhead incurred by the above implementations, and (iv) proposal for hardware software co-design for reliability based upon critical component identification determined by the application executing on the hardware (as against standalone hardware analysis). This thesis first surveys existing soft error mitigation techniques and their associated limitations. It proposes a new delayed capture methodology as a low overhead soft error detection technique. Delayed capture methodology is an enhancement of the Razor flip-flop methodology. In the delayed capture methodology, the parity for a set of flip-flops is calculated at their inputs and outputs. The input parity is latched on a second clock, which is delayed with respect to the functional clock by more than the soft error pulse width. It requires an extra flip-flop for each set of flip-flops. On the other hand, in the Razor flip-flop methodology an additional flip-flop is required for every functional flip-flop. Due to the skew in the clocks, either the parity flip-flop or the functional flip-flop will capture the effect of transient, and hence by comparing the output parity and latched input parity an error can be detected. Fault injection experiments are performed to evaluate the bneefits and limitations of the proposed approach. The limitations include soft error detection escapes and lack of error correction capability. Different cases of soft error detection escapes are analyzed. They are attributed mainly to a Single Event Upset (SEU) causing multiple flip-flops within a group to be in error. The error space due to SEUs is analyzed and an intelligent flip-flop grouping method using graph theoretic formulations is proposed such that no SEU can cause multiple flip-flops within a group to be in error. Once the error occurs, leaving the correction aspects to the application may not be desirable. The proposed delayed capture methodology is extended to replace parity codes with codes having higher redundancy to enable correction. The hardware overhead due to the proposed methodology is analyzed and an area savings of about 15% is obtained when compared to an existing soft error mitigation methodology with equivalent coverage. The impact of different derating factors in determining the hardware overhead due to the soft error mitigation methodology is then analyzed. We have considered electrical derating and timing derating information for the evaluation purpose. The area overhead of the circuit with implementation of delayed capture methodology, considering different derating factors standalone and in combination is then analyzed. Results indicate that in different circuits, either a combination of these derating factors yield optimal results, or each of them considered standalone. This is due to the dependency of the solution on the heuristic nature of the algorithms used. About 23% area savings are obtained by employing these derating factors for a more optimal grouping of flip-flops. A new paradigm of hardware software co-design for reliability is finally proposed. This is based on application derating in which the application / firmware code is profiled to identify the critical components which must be guarded from soft errors. This identification is based on the ability of the application software to tolerate certain errors in hardware. An algorithm to identify critical components in the control logic based on fault injection is developed. Experimental results indicated that for a safety critical automotive application, only 12% of the sequential logic elements were found to be critical. This approach provides a framework for investigating how software methods can complement hardware methods, to provide a reduced hardware solution for soft error mitigation.
