Design of bioaerosol sampling inlets

Nene, Rohit Ravindra 17 September 2007 (has links)
An experimental investigation involving the design, fabrication, and testing of an ambient sampling inlet and two additional Stokes-scaled inlets is presented here. Testing of each inlet was conducted at wind speeds of 2, 8, and 24 km/h (0.55, 2.22, and 6.67 m/s), and characterized for particle sizes between 5 and 20 µm AD. The base-line ambient sampling inlet, which operates at 100 L/min, was developed to interface with a Circumferential Slot Virtual Impactor aerosol concentrator. The inlet displays wind-speed independent characteristics with a penetration above 90% for a nominal particle size of 10 µm AD for all wind speeds. Particles up to 11.5 µm AD are sampled through this inlet with a penetration above 80% at all wind speeds. In an effort to test the validity of Stokes scaling to assist in the design of inlets, two additional inlets were designed to accommodate design flow rates of 400 L/min and 800 L/min, with the 100 L/min unit as the base inlet. Scaling was achieved by applying a Stokes scaling factor to selective parameters, such as inlet aspiration gap, annular gap, window height, and the rise which is the vertical distance extending from the lower flange to the base of the window. The scaled inlets display wind independent penetration characteristics close to 95% for a nominal particle size of 10 µm AD. The scaled inlets also have the ability to sample particles up to a size of 13 µm AD with a penetration in excess of 80% at all wind speeds. Observations from the plots of penetration against the Stokes number based on the free stream velocity suggest that it is insufficient to use only Stokes-scaling for inlet design. A modified velocity ratio defined for omnidirectional inlets was incorporated into a summary of results obtained for all combinations of BSI units and wind speeds. Also, a correlation equation based on the Stokes number and a modified velocity ratio was developed as a model for predicting performance among the BSI family of inlets. This correlation used in unison with Stokes-scaling provides promise for predicting performance and improving the overall design process of inlets.

Utveckling och design av spegelskåp för badrum

Gustavsson, Evelina, Schough, Camilla January 2007 (has links)

This report is a documentation of a Master’s thesis of 20 credits performed at the educational program of Technical Product- and Production Development with Design at Halmstad University. The project is carried out in cooperation with Hafa AB in Halmstad.

The purpose of this project was to bring forth a concept of a bathroom cabinet for Hafa’s new selection Young through creative design methods. The selection is supposed to attract the younger purchaser but also a target group that dare to experiment with home furnishing and appreciates new design. This group is referred to as Young at Heart.

To satisfy the needs identified in the initial development phase a specific design process model was developed that originates from Ullman´s “The Mechanical Design Process” and Landqvist’s “Vilda idéer och djuplodande analys”. The realization of the project was performed in four parts; problem analysis phase, idea generation phase, realization phase and resulting phase.

In the design process it was included to carry out a thorough analysis of functionality, characteristics and design the bathroom cabinet should represent. Moreover, choice of material, construction details and lighting were other aspects of great importance for the mirror cabinet’s performance.

A great range of tools were used with the purpose of reaching understanding of the product, the industry and the design process. Through quantitative interviews with the target group and the staff at Hafa, benchmarking and trend analysis, valuable information was gathered considering the preferred characteristics and design of a bathroom cabinet.

The project resulted in a mirror cabinet representing innovative design, offering both open and concealed storage. The design differs from the competition, however represents the core values of Hafa, quality and elegance to reasonable price.

Auxiliary office chair

Pascual Osés, Maite January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this project is to develop an auxiliary office chair, which favorably will compete with the existing chairs on the market. Evolutions of ergonomical survey in the work environment and on the configuration of offices require new products which fulfill the requirements properly. In order to achieve it a survey about office chairs has been carried out: types, characteristics, ways of usage and products on the market besides a large antropometrical study and ergonomics related to work area study. The result is an auxillary office chair which improves significatively in ergonomics compared with such chairs found in the market survey. Moreover it is achieved a great improvement refering to apilability stackable characteristics and manufacturing, as this chair has good features as easily cleanning and innovative aesthetics and no high manufacturing cost. That means an easily marketed product.

Acoustical Improvment of a Wood Roof

Sangrós Bobé, Luis, Arranz Hoyo, Elena January 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents a concept for improving a wood roof from an acoustical point of view. The normative related to noise is going to demand higher levels for airborne insulation and also for noise impacts so it is necessary to improve the acoustical part of these constructive elements. A deep study of acoustics and also of roofs: parts, functions, manufacturing… and materials to make them has helped to solve the problem. The knowledge of how sound is produced, propagated and how it can be reduced has given a solution to the problem (concepts creation and choice). The result is a prefabricated wood sandwich panel with a rock wool and rubber core which is enough justified to perform all normative related to noise and sound as well as other functions like supporting, thermal purposes etc. All the parts have been explained adequately and also it has been suggested how the module can be constructed as well as the assembly in the final structure.

Stakeholder Engagement for Service Design : How service designers identify and communicate insights / Intressentinvolvering för tjänstedesign : Hur tjänstedesigners identifierar och kommunicerar insikter

Segelström, Fabian January 2013 (has links)
Service design is a field emerging from the new-found interest in services as a design material by practitioners and academics of the human-centred design tradition. As such, the field can build on the knowledge from previous work in design as well as in service research. Introducing a new design material may however also introduce new challenges to practice. The research presented in this thesis investigates how the design research phase of the human-centred design process is affected by making services a design material. How users, staff and other stakeholders are involved in service design projects was studied in four studies. Two studies focused on getting a holistic view of how service designers engage stakeholders in their design research. The methods used for these two studies were interviews in one case and participatory observation in the other. The two remaining studies focused on specific aspects of the stakeholder engagement process. One compared how designers and anthropologists approach ethnography, whereas the second investigated the communicative qualities of service design visualisations. It is argued that service design is a stakeholder-centred design discipline. The tools used in service design are to a large extent borrowed from other qualitative research traditions, but design-specific tools do exist. The information gathered with the tools for stakeholder engagement is then transformed into insights through analysis and synthesis. These insights are visualised to provide easily accessible representations of service situations. The final section of the thesis identifies challenges ahead for service design practice, based on the findings of the thesis and based on existing theoretical frameworks for the discipline.
