Designing Urban Space With Te Tools Of The Development Legislation

Bas, Yener 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Since 1960s, the scope of urban design broadened in a way that to control the formation process of urban space as a whole. In this respect urban coding became a distinct branch in urban planning as an integrating mechanism of planning and design processes. Thus, design control has become a crucial part of the development control systems especially in the western countries. Although the development legislation in Turkey as an urban coding system has various weaknesses about urban design and design control, it provides important tools to control urban form from macro scale to micro scale. Aim of this study is to analyze the capabilities and deficiencies of the development legislation in Turkey as a design control system. The mostly stated complaint about the planned areas in the cities of Turkey is the loss of diversity and peculiar character of settlements as a result of the homogenization of their spatial pattern, namely apartmentalization. This problem is basically related with the exclusion of urban design from the planning process. The planning approach in Turkey merely oriented to readjustment of property appropriate to small-scale development, ignoring the concerns in regard to urban design. Therefore, beyond a technical fault resulting from the legislation, this is an outcome iv of the way legal tools are used that does not realize the value of potentia l possibilities in the legislation. However, if the legal tools are used efficiently in an approach that bring the considerations of urban design into fore, it might be possible to come out with more satisfactory environments in terms of diversity and richness of urban space. This is the basic hypothesis examined in this study. In this context, firstly the relation between urban coding and design is investigated in its historical development and a hierarchical model for design control is defined. Then the development legislation in Turkey is evaluated in the frame of this model. Finally, territorial hierarchy of space is taken up as a design criterion and the capacity of legal tools in control of the transitional zones, which are critical elements of territorial hierarchy, is examined.

Redesenho urbanístico de assentamentos informais com vistas à conservação da água e sustentabilidade ambiental. / urban redesign of informal settlements preserving water resources and ensuring environmental sustainability

Luiz Fernando Flores Cerqueira 28 September 2012 (has links)
This thesis, associated to HIDROCIDADES Project, is also part of the FINEP Maplu-2 network research. It presents a framework for the implementation of the urban redesign of informal settlements, in accordance with present day urban planning tendency that integrates water resources into urban planning, focusing on water conservation, environmental sustainability and environmental education. This framework is based on the principles of Low Impact Urban Design and Devolopment (LIUDD New Zealand), Low Impact Design (LID EUA), Water Sustainable Urban Design (WSUD- Australia) and Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS UK). The LIUDD puts forward the application of local and decentralized devices for urban drainage and superficial outflow, such as harvesting and profiting from rainwater, green roofs, park implantations and rainwater beds infiltration, adoption of permeable areas in the public sidewalks and roads, among others. The Community of Vila Cascatinha, situated in the lowland grounds of Jacarepaguá, in Rio de Janeiro, was adopted as a case study. In 2006 the Community had 900 inhabitants, who through field work and guided interviews were identified as descendants of small agricultural producers. Nowadays, the area, which is part of the expansion of the city, will be developed to locate important sports infrastructure for the 2016 Olympic Games, (therefore the relevance of this urban redesign proposal). During the interviews several problems were mentioned by the locals and among the most serious ones were the presence of rats and the occurrence of recurring floods. It was also possible to identify how familiar and sensitive the dwellers were to the some of the practices presented in the LIUDD context. The ultimate aim of the interviews was to elaborate an action plan, as described by Thiollent, for the sustainable urban redesign of the settlement under study, as well as a proposal for sustainable community dwellings, so as to minimize the effects of floods derived from the excessive waterproofed soil. Despite the specificities of the proposal, it is believed that it can be applied to other settlements in similar conditions.

Responsiv webbdesign : Design- och utvecklingsprocessen för skapandet av en responsiv webbsida / Responsive Design : The design and development process for the creation of a responsive website

Davidsson Pajala, Therese January 2013 (has links)
This report describes the design and development process in building a responsive website. The website was created for the use of the intended game studio Rocket Lunches Studios. Wordpress has been used as a CMS (Content Management System) to simplify the updating of the website by the client themselves. The website is coded by thinking "mobile-first", which begins with the design focusing on smaller screens and then adapt the content on larger screen sizes. To make the design responsive the three components flexible grids, a flexible images / media and media query has been used, in addition to coding in HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript. The result of this report is a survey of the design and development process when building a responsive website. The practicality of the thesis resulted in a responsive prototype of a web page for a game studio.

The role of curation in the design and development of brand experience in the luxury retail environment

Street, Gemma Louise January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the role of curation in the design and development of brand experience in the luxury retail environment. Three research objectives seek firstly, to gain an understanding of the meaning of curation in luxury retailing and identify the role, purpose and value to luxury retailers; secondly, to explore the different ways in which curation manifests itself in the luxury retail environment by examining sole brand and multi brand luxury retailers, and lastly, to identify how curation is brought to life through the curatorial roles within luxury retailers. In light of increasing global competitive pressures and fast-paced technology advances associated with mobile devices, the rise of omnichannel retailing has led luxury brands to be ubiquitous, with the resulting challenge for luxury retailers to develop seamless and experiential omnichannel brand experiences in order to continue to differentiate and grow. However, there is a paucity of literature regarding the design and development of luxury brand experiences, suggesting a gap in the literature. In addition, ‘curation’, a term traditionally associated with museology, is being increasingly used in the business environment in terms of creating differentiated experiences or collection of products both online and in-store. Little attention has been paid to curation in the literature, with the result of limited understanding of the role of curation in the design and development of brand experience, suggesting a second gap to be addressed in the research. The research was an investigative, qualitative and thematic analysis-based study. The data collection focused on face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 17 senior professionals from the luxury retail and cultural environments in the UK. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) Six Stages of Thematic Analysis and NVivo software were utilised to analyse the data, resulting in 9 key themes. My original contribution to the literature is this research is one of the first empirical studies to explore the role of curation in the design and development of brand experience in the luxury retail environment, resulting in three key contributions. Firstly, the role of curation is an influential one in the design and development of brand experience in the luxury retail environment and is manifested in four forms of curation across sole brand and multi brand luxury retailers. Secondly, curation in luxury retail has evolved from the traditional art-historian discipline of curation and is emerging as a new discipline and modus operandi in its own right, creating strategic, organisational, financial and experiential value. Thirdly, a strategic curation management toolkit consisting of three strategic frameworks was developed that contributes to both the brand literature and management practice. The toolkit provides managers with a common vernacular to develop their curatorial capabilities and identify strategic opportunities where they can harness curation as a strategy to design and develop omnichannel luxury brand experiences as a route to competitive advantage and build a platform for future growth.

The impact of a board game as parent guidance strategy to reinforce Cognitive Control Therapy in the home environment

Byles, Hestie Sophia 13 November 2007 (has links)
In this study the impact of a board game as parent guidance strategy to reinforce Cognitive Control Therapy (CCT) in the home environment of a child with ADHD was explored. The influence of such a board game, based on the principles of CCT, on multiple contexts of the child’s existence - therapeutic and family contexts - was also investigated. There were two reasons for involving the parents in therapy. Firstly, children with an attention problem are situated within contexts and the effect of ADHD can permeate to the home and school environments. Secondly, for Cognitive Control Therapy (CCT) to be successful, it needs to be sustained by frequent repetition. It was hypothesized that sustainability of the effect of CCT should rise substantially after introduction of the board game, as the child and the parent can reinforce the principles of CCT by using it, even without being able to attend a session. The board game was designed by using the principles for game development as articulated by Dodge. A case study was then conducted by using a mixed methods approach, where quantitative and qualitative data were obtained. Data collection strategies consisted of quantitative methods in the form of the Cognitive Control battery (pre and post test), and the Copeland Symptoms checklist. Qualitative strategies included parental feedback, qualitative data during therapy sessions (observations and therapeutic notes) and a semi-structured interview with the mother. Data was collected before, after and during the intervention. The intervention consisted of individual therapy with the participant, parent guidance and parallel implementation of the designed board game by the parents with the child-participant. The quantitative data (from the CCB and the Copeland Symptoms Checklist) from the post test indicated that sensitivity towards distractions remains a concern, and that parental implementation of a board game (incorporating elements of CCT) with a child can possibly have a slightly negative effect on cognitive control functioning. However, the scope of this case study does not allow direct correlations to be drawn between the parental input and the child’s cognitive control functioning. It does point to the possibility of heeding caution when implementing a board game to reinforce CCT principles by a parent. Conversely, the findings from the study also indicated that family relations improved. Five qualitative insights emerged: i) increased ability to distinguish between relevant versus irrelevant information in the participant; ii) increase in organizational thought in the therapeutic situation and at home; iii) improved communication between parent and child, resulting in improved skills to maintain discipline; iv) improved interaction among family members; and v) transfer of skills to the mother. The study found that the greatest contribution of the board game appears to be the improvement experienced in the family context – probably as a result of increased interaction among family members and attention focused on the problem. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Educational Psychology / MEd / unrestricted

The dynamics of theory and practice in instructional systems design

De Villiers, Mary Ruth 21 February 2003 (has links)
This study investigates the dynamics of theory and practice in the design of instructional systems, learning events and learning environments, with a view to synthesizing an integrated metamodel as a framework to facilitate effective learning in systems which use computer technology as a tutor, tool, or environment. This framework can be used as a design aid by instructional designers and instructor-designers, or as a tool to examine existing learning events from the viewpoint of learning and instructional-design theory. The research contributes to inquiry into learning theory by an in-depth study of the elements of the framework itself, investigating how they function in different contexts and contents. Following an extensive literature survey, the researcher synthesizes a concise integrated framework of learning theories and instructional design practice from the cognitive family. This framework, the Hexa-C Metamodel (HCMm), is generated by a process of criterion-based textual filtration through effectiveness criteria, and encompasses the theoretical concepts of constructivism, cognitive learning and knowledge/skills components as well as the practical characteristics of creativity, customization and collaborative learning. Using mainly qualitative ethnographic methods within the contexts of action research and development research, case studies are undertaken, applying the elements of the HCMm as an inquiry toolset to investigate three diverse learning events to determine what they reveal about the practice of effective and motivational learning. The learning events - a computer-based practice environment, an Internet-based course, and a fieldwork project - were selected due to the researcher's close involvement with each intervention. Information from the evaluations of the learning events is then used to further examine in-depth the theories and characteristics which comprise the tool, as well as their interrelationships and ways of implementing them in domains that differ in context and content - distinguishing particularly between well-structured and ill-structured domains. / Dissertation (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2004. / Curriculum Studies / PhD / Unrestricted

KUMAR, AMIT, MUTHU SAMY, AMIRTHALINGAM January 2020 (has links)
Our research is based on data triangulation methodology by which we are going to answer the question with a combination of two elements: the design and development in combination with life cycle perspective according to ISO 14001:2015 and organization consider the life cycle perspective when they design and develop their products, in a modified form introducing many new aspects of life-cycle thinking. This Master’sthesis aims to discuss the Sustainability approach through the use of Environmental Management Standards (EMS), the results achieved by organizations that implement and certify those EMS, and a special focus on the current process of ISO 14001:2015 revision and the logic behind it. Revisiting the concept of Sustainability, the status of the International Organization for Standardization 14001, requirements that related to that life cycle perspective in ISO 14001:2015, eco-design, circular economy and its expected outcomes are discussed. The ISO 14001:2015 revision will have major impacts on the more than 300,000 worldwide certified organizations and on the many professionals that work with it. Analysis of the development of a sustainability portfolio within a globally-operating manufacturing company, we came different illustrate the kinds of life cycle work involved in dealing with activities and interests, connecting activities and interests into action-nets, performing life cycle practices, and spreading the life cycle idea. Finally, we discuss implications of life cycle work for research in the field of organization and management studies and questions related to the topic with quality engineers within the organization.
