Exploring Early Childhood Teachers’ Perceptions and Practices Regarding Technology Integration in Literacy Instruction

Al Jabr, Moneerah 01 August 2022 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to investigate early childhood teachers’ perceptions of how technology integration contributes to the development of young children’s literacy. I sought to understand their perspectives on the differences between traditional and digital literacies, the benefits of using technology for this purpose, and how they perceived their role in planning and implementing technology-integrated literacy activities. Finally, the study examined how teachers’ perceptions, beliefs, teaching experiences, and technology knowledge influenced their classroom practices. The study drew from sociocultural and multimodal perspectives that view children’s use of digital devices as tools to make meaning and engage with multimodal texts as social practice influenced by their interactions and conversations with teachers and peers in classrooms. Ten early childhood teachers from three different elementary schools agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews and reviews of lesson plans and instructional PowerPoints. The data were analyzed through two cycles of coding that generated four overarching themes: 1) teachers’ beliefs and understanding of digital literacies, 2) digital literacy experiences in early childhood classrooms, 3) teachers’ roles in technology-enhanced instruction, and 4) facilitators and barriers to digital technology integration. The study found that participating teachers recognized the importance of integrating digital technologies into their traditional literacy instruction in moderation with the exception of pre-K teachers who asserted that digital technology was inappropriate in pre-K classrooms. The teachers tended to conceptualize digital literacies as the absence of physical aspects and materials and the consumption of digital texts. In addition, teachers observed common benefits related to technology integration including providing audio and visual modes to supplement print-centric literacy, maintaining students ‘attention by projecting stories and letters on an interactive whiteboard, and facilitating individualized learning using apps that assess students’ reading levels. The teachers provided opportunities for students to watch videos about letters and sight words and play literacy games on tablets and Chromebooks. With guidance and modeling, most teachers encouraged the students to read e-books and play literacy games. The findings suggest implications for teachers, administrators, teacher educators, policymakers for effective integration of technology in early childhood classrooms and to overcome obstacles that teachers might encounter. The findings could be used to guide professional development based on teachers’ perspectives and classroom experiences to better meet their needs because they are the key to more productive technology integration. Such support is needed to help teachers realize the potential of digital technology to transform literacy learning and prepare young children to be literate in the 21st century.

Towards Sustainable Development : Perception and Dilemmas Associated with Digital Technologies in the Manufacturing Industry / Mot hållbar utveckling : Uppfattningar och dilemman kring digitala verktyg inom tillverkningsindustrin

Pieti, Julia, Sundling, Hanna January 2024 (has links)
Purpose – As sustainability gains prominence and digitalization advances, new ways of conducting business have emerged. Embracing sustainability initiatives has become imperative for manufacturing firms seeking to enhance growth and maintain global competitiveness. Digital technologies, particularly in the development process, have demonstrated significant potential in this regard. Yet, their novelty leaves firms uncertain about their optimal utilization in supporting the transition towards a more sustainable manufacturing industry. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore the usage of digital technologies in the development process of manufacturing firms from a sustainability perspective. Method – This study employs qualitative research with an exploratory multiple case study approach. It clarifies manufacturing firm's viewpoint on digital technologies for sustainability, conducting 13 interviews from 12 distinct firms (10 within discrete manufacturing and two in the process industry), all analyzed via a thematic analysis. Findings – The analysis resulted in an overview of manufacturing firms' perception of sustainable development and digital technologies as well as five main dilemmas that manufacturing firms encounter in this regard, whereas three of them had a specific emphasis on digital technologies within the development process. These three dilemmas then formed the foundation of a framework that shows an agile process for manufacturing firms to consider when adopting digital technologies. Theoretical and managerial contributions – This study contributes to the sustainable manufacturing and development process literature from a holistic perspective, with an emphasis on digital technologies. Furthermore, it provides a managerial framework for manufacturing firms that aim to advance their utilization of digital technologies for sustainability while emphasizing crucial considerations.  Limitations and future research – This study has focused on how digital technologies can be utilized within manufacturing firms' development process for increasing sustainability. Future research advocates for a broader representation, especially from the process industry, and further exploration how particular digital technologies can assist manufacturing firms in specific stages of their development process.

The impact of digital technologies in improving supply chain resilience: An exploratory study in the agri-food industry

Dao, Luong 05 1900 (has links)
Globalization, geopolitics, and socio-economic uncertainties increase supply chain vulnerabilities. Climate changes, natural disasters, and man-made accidents have increased the tension of disturbances. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many supply chains worldwide, putting the agri-food supply chain at a higher risk than ever. Agri-food supply chains face severe and complex challenges due to industry-specific characteristics, such as perishability, short shelf life, long lead time production, and weather dependence. Consumer awareness of having healthy, traceable, and environmentally friendly food products has become an increasing concern, making sustainable development also a vital factor in the agri-food industry. To ensure sustainable development, firms must improve supply chain resilience by discovering, nurturing, and developing resilience capability and competitive advantage. Resilience describes the ability to respond quickly to disruptions and help the supply chain recover. Recently, digital technologies have developed rapidly, supported by the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which plays a crucial role in a company's operations. Digital technologies help promote core resilience competencies such as visibility, collaboration, and agility through typical technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, fifth-generation technology, big data analytics, additive manufacturing, tracking, tracing technologies, etc. This study uses a theoretical framework from dynamic capabilities and extant literature reviews to determine the research gap in the agri-food industry. The study uses mixed methods: a qualitative research method to examine and uncover the role of supply chain resilience in responding to disruptions in the agri-food industry, and a second study used a quantitative method to examine the influence of digital technologies on resilience in the agri-food supply chain. This study confirms the critical role of resilience in the agri-food supply chain and the significance of digital technologies in improving supply chain resilience and firm performance. The study also suggests that a firm should proactively build its resilience capability rather than learn from past disruptions. The findings are useful for academics and practitioners alike, in the acknowledgment of the significant effects of digital technologies on supply chain resilience in the agri-food industry. Some technologies are not agri-food specific but have a place in the industry, while others are tailor made for farming applications. Parties in the agri-food industry must take advantage of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and digital technologies to flourish in the agri-food industry. / Business Administration/Interdisciplinary

Ethical Framework for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies

Ashok, M., Madan, R., Joha, A., Sivarajah, Uthayasankar 02 October 2021 (has links)
Yes / The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Digital technologies (DT) is proliferating a profound socio-technical transformation. Governments and AI scholarship have endorsed key AI principles but lack direction at the implementation level. Through a systematic literature review of 59 papers, this paper contributes to the critical debate on the ethical use of AI in DTs beyond high-level AI principles. To our knowledge, this is the first paper that identifies 14 digital ethics implications for the use of AI in seven DT archetypes using a novel ontological framework (physical, cognitive, information, and governance). The paper presents key findings of the review and a conceptual model with twelve propositions highlighting the impact of digital ethics implications on societal impact, as moderated by DT archetypes and mediated by organisational impact. The implications of intelligibility, accountability, fairness, and autonomy (under the cognitive domain), and privacy (under the information domain) are the most widely discussed in our sample. Furthermore, ethical implications related to the governance domain are shown to be generally applicable for most DT archetypes. Implications under the physical domain are less prominent when it comes to AI diffusion with one exception (safety). The key findings and resulting conceptual model have academic and professional implications.

Enhancing Resilience Through Digital Supply Chain Collaboration : Exploring Motivations- and Response Factors of Digital Technologies for Collaboration in the Role of Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience

Kenttälä, Isak, Nyström, Sebastian January 2024 (has links)
Abstract  Background: In the context of significant technological advancements and evolving economic policies, digital practices have become critical for improving organisational performance and efficiency. Simultaneously, to understand the motivations behind selecting digital technologies for collaboration and their impact on organisations' ability to respond to unexpected events is essential for organisations to enhance a resilient supply chain. To explore the opportunities of enabling a resilient supply chain, organisations need to adopt strategies which include thoughtful evaluation and collaborative efforts. The description of supply chain resilience is in previous literature mostly concentrated on how to manage risk and implement strategies to enhance resiliency, but the application and impact of digital technologies in supply chains need more attention within different regions and countries.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of digital collaboration in supply chains of manufacturing organisations located in Sweden, specifically focusing on how these practices influence enhancing supply chain resilience. Method: An exploratory research was applied to fulfil the purpose of this qualitative study. The data was collected through nine semi-structured interviews with representatives from manufacturing organisations who have essential insights into the supply chain operations. Utilising an inductive approach, the data has been analysed through a thematic analysis.  Conclusion: The thesis concludes that motivators for adopting digital technologies in the supply chain encompass both immediate gains and a broader vision of long-term resilience and agility. From the analysis an emergent framework was developed, which depicts the incentives to select and implement digital technologies for collaboration and revealed influencing motivations and influencing response capabilities for supply chain representatives.
