The influence of digital meetings on the meaningfulness for the meeting participants : A qualitative study of the factors that can contribute to increased the sense of meaning in digital meetings

Cardoso Cintra Cartela, Daniela, Hägg, Astrid January 2022 (has links)
Background: Digital meetings were on the agenda even before Covid-19 existed, but despite this, the pandemic has meant major changes in the working methods of many people. This has made it possible to identify new problems linked to digital meetings. For the organization, it is important that sensemaking is part of digital meetings so that, for example, reflection on challenges and future goals can come to consensus. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to highlight stories about the experience of digital meetings among meeting participants and to investigate factors that can contribute to increased meaning in digital meetings. The study also aims to examine when digital meetings are preferred and not and also which impact Weicks' (1995) seven character traits have on sensemaking in digital meetings. Method: This study has a qualitative approach based on a realistic perspective. The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with six employees, at different companies, with experience of digital work meetings. Conclusion: The experience of digital meetings differs depending on, among other things, the professional role and the organization's digital adaptations. The factors that can contribute to sensemaking in digital meetings can be linked to time, social interaction, technology, structure and efficiency. All of these areas contribute in different ways to the creation of meaning and experiences of the digital meeting. It also appears that digital meetings are well suited for the dissemination of information, appropriate technical equipment and good technical practice among the meeting participants and that sensemaking occurs through six of Weicks (1995) seven charactertraits.

Microinteractions: Don’t forget to raise your hand! : A qualitative study concerning microinteractions in digital meeting platforms and the impact they have on workflow efficiencies in the creative industry.

Andersson, Elsa, Strömland, Moa, Quassdorf, Catherine January 2021 (has links)
This research paper studies the extent of how microinteractions are utilized in Microsoft Teams and the impact that they have on workflow efficiencies, specifically in the creative industry. In a novel time where Covid-19 virus has increased the demand of digital platforms, the importance of research within remote meeting utilization, and the interaction possibilities within, is of utter importance. Also, since we are missing out on the spontaneous interactions that occur when meeting face-to-face, the microinteractions within digital meeting platforms now carry a heavier weight when interactions are solely occuring remotely. The data collection was achieved through a qualitative approach consisting of participant observations and semi-structured interviews. The results of this research proved that microinteractions are used frequently within digital meetings in Microsoft Teams, but in different contexts and in different constellations. The results also identified that microinteractions, which hold the right conditions, can streamline workflows in certain scenarios. This study concluded in interesting data that answered the research questions but also opened up for further research due to the topic being of a novel field and in a special time, in this case referring to the pandemic and Covid-19.

The digital work meeting : An overview of its opportunities, challenges and how to adapt the leadership

Rodman, Ellen, Swahn, Julia January 2020 (has links)
Background: Digitalization has changed how we meet, where we meet and how our meetings are expressed. Meetings occur in all organizations and since many work tasks are no longer tied to a specific geographical location, meetings are increasingly being held in a digital format. As more meetings become digital, organizations are faced with new opportunities as well as challenges. Previous research suggests that organizations need to adapt to the new work environment, not least the role of a meeting leader. What needs to be adapted and how it needs to be done is not stated, however, it is of great relevance to explain. The study therefore aims to identify which factors in a digital work meeting are important for its well-functioning. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the digital meeting by highlighting its challenges and opportunities, and to explain how the role of a meeting leader is adapted to a digital meeting context. Methodology: This cross-sectional study has a qualitative approach based on a realistic perspective. The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with eight managers with experience of digital work meetings. Conclusion: The digital work meeting saves resources in the form of time and money, a flexible workplace and a more democratic opportunity to participate. At the same time, the experience, meeting place, choice of communication tools, disturbance, lack of body language and relationship creation are identified as the major challenges. The well-functioning digital work meeting is thus a meeting where the identified challenges have been reduced or, most preferably, eliminated, creating the right conditions for both meeting participants and the meeting leader. A well-functioning digital meeting requires an adapted meeting leadership, experience, working technology, rich communication tools, commitment and guidelines.

A proposal for the protection of digital databases in Sri Lanka

Abeysekara, Thusitha Bernad January 2013 (has links)
Economic development in Sri Lanka has relied heavily on foreign and domestic investment. Digital databases are a new and attractive area for this investment. This thesis argues that investment needs protection and this is crucial to attract future investment. The thesis therefore proposes a digital database protection mechanism with a view to attracting investment in digital databases to Sri Lanka. The research examines various existing protection measures whilst mainly focusing on the sui generis right protection which confirms the protection of qualitative and/or quantitative substantial investment in the obtaining, verification or presentation of the contents of digital databases. In digital databases, this process is carried out by computer programs which establish meaningful and useful data patterns through their data mining process, and subsequently use those patterns in Knowledge Discovery within database processes. Those processes enhance the value and/or usefulness of the data/information. Computer programs need to be protected, as this thesis proposes, by virtue of patent protection because the process carried out by computer programs is that of a technical process - an area for which patents are particularly suitable for the purpose of protecting. All intellectual property concepts under the existing mechanisms address the issue of investment in databases in different ways. These include Copyright, Contract, Unfair Competition law and Misappropriation and Sui generis right protection. Since the primary objective of the thesis is to introduce a protection system for encouraging qualitative and quantitative investment in digital databases in Sri Lanka, this thesis suggests a set of mechanisms and rights which comprises of existing intellectual protection mechanisms for databases. The ultimate goal of the proposed protection mechanisms and rights is to improve the laws pertaining to the protection of digital databases in Sri Lanka in order to attract investment, to protect the rights and duties of the digital database users and owners/authors and, eventually, to bring positive economic effects to the country. Since digital database protection is a new concept in the Sri Lankan legal context, this research will provide guidelines for policy-makers, judges and lawyers in Sri Lanka and throughout the South Asian region.

You cannot offer practical support like a cup of coffee if the client is sad” : -  A qualitative study regarding the significance of the digital meeting within economic aid

Linder, Tilda, Pavlovic, Maja January 2021 (has links)
Traditionally, meetings between social workers and clients have taken place physically. Since the 2010s, there has been a digital development which has meant that more calls between social workers and clients take place digitally, for example via telephone, Skype or mobile applications. In the spring of 2020, Sweden’s social services faced a drastic change due to covid-19 caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. In order to reduce the spread of infection, more and more meetings within the social services have had to take place digitally. This study aimed to investigate the impact and significance of digitalisation, in the form of the digital meeting, in the interaction and meeting between social welfare secretaries and clients in economic aid, viewed from the social welfare secretaries’ perspective. The empirical material has been collected through qualitative interviews with eight social welfare secretaries active within economic aid. With the intention of analyzing the empirical data a theoretical framework has been used, consisting of Goffman's theory of social interaction and new institutional organization theory. The result indicates that there are difficulties in establishing new, but also maintaining existing, relationships with clients when meetings become digital. The interaction between the parties is affected when the physical meeting is absent, especially if the parties cannot see each other. Apart from digital maturity, the digital meeting does not seem to require any other proficiency. The social welfare secretaries continue to describe that the proficiencies they already possess such as sensitivity, compassion and professionalism become more difficult to maintain in digital meetings. At the same time, the results show that digital meetings also have positive effects. It is mainly emphasized that digital meetings are more efficient and accessible than physical meetings. Furthermore, the impact and significance of the digital meeting is also affected by the client’s different conditions.
