Putting it down: the making of a cd with special reference to Hendrik Hofmeyr's Notturno elegiaco for piano trio

Nay, Malcolm 02 September 2009 (has links)
M.Mus. Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, 2008 / The broad structure of this reflexive essay is twofold: First I discuss my experience of making a compact disc (CD) recording with the Trio Hemanay, which consists of three performer-musicians – Marian Lewin (cello), Helen Vosloo (flute) and myself, Malcolm Nay (piano), and second I offer an analysis of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Notturno Elegiaco for Piano Trio, a work composed specifically for the Trio Hemanay,. I draw on writings of other performers and recording artists, who have contemplated and engaged with the recording process, in order to place myself, the Trio and our music-making within a South African context. I further contextualise the Trio with reference to other well-known performing ensembles in South Africa. I refer to the inception and constitution of the Hemanay Trio and give some insights into aspects that inform the aesthetics and rationale of its establishment and existence. I also discuss the practicalities of financing and producing such a recording, and the extent to which non-musical issues inevitably impact on the artistic outcome. I further elaborate on the value of documenting music through recordings, both from a personal and from an objective perspective, and I reflect on what I have learnt from the recording experience; where relevant, I collate this with the experience of my two colleagues. In Part II, I offer an analysis of the musical content and a stylistic scrutiny of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Notturno Elegiaco, recorded by Trio Hemanay on the CD under discussion (the only current recording of this work). This essay is written in a narrative form, which allows me to discuss the inception of the recording, the development of the process and the elements that have contributed to the acquisition of greater insights for both me and for the Trio, all of which may influence future projects.

Real time microprocessor techniques for a digital multitrack tape recorder

Donnelly, Terence January 1989 (has links)
Transport properties of a standard compact - cassette tape system are measured and software techniques devised to configure a low - cost, direct digital recording system. Tape - velocity variation is typically ± 10% of standard speed over tape lengths of 5 µm.with occasional variations of ±40%. Static tape - skew can result due to axial movement of the tape reel when it spools.Dynamic tape skew occurs and is primarily caused by tape - edge curvature with a constant contribution due to the transport mechanism.Spectral skew components range from 0.32 Hz to 8 Hz with magnitude normally within one 10 kbit/ sec- bit cell. The pinch roller works against the friction of the tape guides to cause tape deformation.Average values of tape deformation are 0.67 µm,0.85 µm and 1.08 µm for C60,C90 and C120 tape respectively. Parallel, software encoding / decoding algorithms have been developed for several channel codes.Adaptive software methods permit track data rates up to 3.33 k bits/sec in a rnultitrack system using a simple microcomputer. For a 4 - track system, raw error rates vary from 10ˉ⁷ at 500 bits/sec/track to 10ˉ⁵ at 3.33 kbits/sec/track.Adaptive software reduces skew - induced errors by 50%.A skew - correction technique has been developed and implemented on an 8 - track system at a track data rate of 10 k bits/sec. Real - time error correction gives a theoretical corrected error rate of 10ˉ¹¹for a raw error rate of 10ˉ⁷. Multiple track errors can cause mis - correction and interleaving is advised. Software algorithms have been devised for Reed - Solomon code. With a more powerful microprocessor this code m ay be combined with the above techniques in a layered error-correction scheme. The software techniques developed may be applied to N tracks with an N - bit computer.Recording density may be increased by using thin - film, multitrack heads and a faster computer.

A ROADMAP TO STANDARDIZING THE IRIG 106 CHAPTER 10 COMPLIANT DATA FILTERING AND OVERWRITNG SOFTWARE PROCESS

Berard, Alfredo, Manning, Dennis, Kim, Jeong Min 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / High speed digital recorders have revolutionized the way Major Range and Test Facility Bases collect instrumentation data. One challenge facing these organizations is the need for a validated process for the separation of specific data channels and/or data from multiplexed recordings. Several organizations within Eglin Air Force Base have joined forces to establish the requirements and validate a software process compliant with the IRIG-106 Chapter 10 Digital Recording Standard (which defines allowable media access, data packetization, and error controls mechanics). This paper describes a roadmap to standardizing the process to produce this software process, Data Overwriting and Filtering Application (DOFA).

AATIS AND CAIS DATA RECORDING

Gaddis, William R. Jr, Sandland, Sawn 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / DOD flight test centers need affordable, small-format, flight-qualified digital instrumentation recording solutions to support existing and future flight testing. The Advanced Airborne Test Instrumentation System (AATIS) is today's primary data acquisition system at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC). Digital Recorder (DR) 1995 is planned to provide full support for AATIS output capabilities and satisfy initial recording requirements for the Common Airborne Instrumentation System (CAIS). The follow-on to the AATIS, the CAIS is a tri-service development to satisfy future DOD flight test data acquisition requirements. DR 2000 is planned as the future recording solution for CAIS and will be able to fully satisfy the 50 Mbps recording requirement. In the developments of DR 1995 and DR 2000, commonality and interoperability have emerged as significant issues. This paper presents an overview of these recording solutions and examines commonality and interoperability issues.

625 MBIT/SEC BIT ERROR LOCATION ANALYSIS FOR INSTRUMENTATION RECORDING APPLICATIONS

Waschura, Thomas E. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / This paper describes techniques for error location analysis used in the design and testing of high-speed instrumentation data recording and communications applications. It focuses on the differences between common bit error rate testing and new error location analysis. Examples of techniques presented include separating bit and burst error components, studying probability of burst occurrences, looking at error free interval occurrence rates as well as auto-correlating error position. Each technique contributes to a better understanding of the underlying error phenomenon and enables higher-quality digital recording and communication. Specific applications in error correction coding emulation, magnetic media error mapping and systematic error interference are discussed.

El uso e impacto de las técnicas de grabación y mezcla analógica en la producción musical estadounidense de pop y rock (2011-2017): Alternativas para su aplicación en el estudio digital / The use and impact of analog recording and mixing techniques in the American pop and rock music production (2011-2017): Alternatives for its application in the digital studio

Rodríguez Salinas, Roberto Javier 17 August 2020 (has links)
The hereby thesis attempts to identify and analyze the influence and application of analog audio in contemporary music production by covering diverse criteria: sonic/technical, performative, social, of preservation or archive, among others. Although digital audio, and its derived use of editing and mixing tools, are currently considered standard in the music industry, it is also known that a significant number of producers, engineers and artists still employ analog recording and mixing techniques developed decades ago. Hence, analog audio presents itself as an alternative to the modern creative and production processes, at both sonic and performance levels. This work begins with the technical and aesthetical development within an analog recording, comparing it afterwards with its digital counterpart. To serve this purpose, the opinion and detailed production processes of renowned American producers and professionals, responsible for the most acclaimed records in the last ten years, are taken into consideration. Those records evidence the creative use of analog audio, as well as its adaptation to a digital setup. Finally, independent producers could benefit the most from the information and arguments in this paper, because they directly or indirectly know the benefits of working analog, even when they often lack the resources to acquire these tools. Therefore, the author attempts to bring tools and solutions for the application of analog and digital audio in a single modern production. / Tesis

Jaume Bennasar, Andrés 09 October 2009 (has links)
The thesis seeks to analyse, on the one hand, the integration and development of the new technologies in the Administration of Justice; and, on the other, the parameters which constitute the validity and efficiency of the electronic document. The first question centres on the configuration of the Information Systems of the Judicial Office and the Public Prosecutor, as well as the computerisation of the Civil Registers, where the art. 230 LOPJ it's the part key. Their programmes, applications, the Video Conferencing, the judicial registers and the telecommunication networks which are covered by the recognised electronic signatures, are studied, where the agreements on technological collaboration gain great relevance. The digitalisation of evidence might perhaps be one of the questions with most consequence, bearing in mind that the judgment is the act by which the process is culminated. Although not all the projects adopted within the compass of e.justice have developed completely nor have reached all the judicial organs. The final objective is to achieve an agile, quality Justice, to which the recently approved Strategic Plan for the Modernisation of Justice aspires. With reference to the second perspective, there is no doubt that the juridical Ordinance and the tribunals within the compass of material justice grant full validity and efficacy to the electronic document. Our line of investigation is justified because there are more and more processes which are sustained by electronic supports of all kinds, whether it be at the establishment of the action or later, as a proof of it (art. 299.2 LEC). Amongst other things, we examine the computerised document, the problems which surround the fax, the systems for video recording and the electronic contract.
