The Documental Analysis, as an intrinsic process to the Information Organization in the Information Science domain, establishes theoretical-methodological parameters, of a descriptive nature, that make explicit the procedures of the analytical doing that lead to the identification of the document contents. Based on the assumption that this procedure has a technical support in the intersection of procedures with Diplomatics, the aim was to recover the genesis of the Diplomatic conception and to expose the disciplinary base of theoretical fundaments that establish its procedures for the analyses of the document form and content, as well as expose the intersection of procedures and also in which moment this can occur to contribute effectively to the analytical doing in the Librarianship area. The approach uses the exploratorytheoretical and descriptive-comparative analysis to expose the assumptions that are the basis of the intersection of procedures and how this is carried out. In order to make explicit the proposed auxiliary technique, the document book is used, by means of a comparative-analytical procedure. It was observed that the diplomatic procedure presents elements that make it possible to systematize the acting of the analyst through the description of the procedure intersection, what allowed highlighting the aiming in doing analysis before the structural systematization of the document characteristics. The result helps in the identification of concepts starting from the articulation elements of form-content that reveal the distinct statements of the book. Therefore, from the diplomatic conception of document analysis it is possible to insert in DA context the view of the analysis of document to text by using structural elements that make explicit and that contextualize the external and internal aspects of the document, by comparing the dimension of its content by means of the dimension of its form.

Trusting records: the evolution of legal, historical, and diplomatic methods of assessing the trustworthiness of records from antiquity to the digital age

MacNeil, Heather Marie 05 1900 (has links)
A trustworthy record is one that is both an accurate statement of facts and a genuine manifestation of those facts. Record trustworthiness thus has two qualitative dimensions: reliability and authenticity. Reliability means that the record is capable of standing for the facts to which it attests, while authenticity means that the record is what it claims to be. The trustworthiness of records as evidence is of particular interest to legal and historical practitioners who need to ensure that records are trustworthy so that justice may be realized or the past understood. Traditionally, the disciplines of law and history have relied on the guarantee of trustworthiness inherent in the circumstances surrounding the creation and maintenance of records. For records created by bureaucracies, that trustworthiness has been ensured and protected through the mechanisms of authority and delegation, and through procedural controls exercised over record-writers and record-keepers. As bureaucracies rely increasingly on new information and communication technologies to create and maintain their records, the question that presents itself is whether these traditional mechanisms and controls are adequate to the task of verifying the degree of reliability and authenticity of electronic records, whose most salient feature is the ease with which they can be invisibly altered and manipulated. This study explores the evolution of means of assessing the trustworthiness of records as evidence from antiquity to the digital age, and from the perspectives of law and history; and examines recent efforts undertaken by researchers in the field of archival science to develop methods for ensuring the trustworthiness of electronic records specifically, based on a contemporary adaptation of diplomatics. Diplomatics emerged in the seventeenth century as a body of concepts and principles for determining the authenticity of medieval documents. The exploration reveals the extent to which legal, historical, and diplomatic methods operate within a framework of inferences, generalizations and probabilities; the degree to which those methods are rooted in observational principles; and the continuing validity of a best evidence principle for assessing record trustworthiness. The study concludes that, while the technological means of assessing and ensuring record trustworthiness have changed fundamentally over time, the underlying principles have remained remarkably consistent. / Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies / Graduate

Suid-Afrika se eksterne verhoudings met internasionale akteurs in Suider-Afrika : 'n gebeure-ontleding

Van Antwerpen, Johanna Wilhelmina 27 October 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Politics) / This study was concerned with the relations of South Africa and international actors in the Southern African region. It was noticed that there was a shortage of quantitative studies, especially on international behaviour. in South Africa. For this reason a quantitative method, events-analysis, was used. The method quantifies actions of states over a period of time; the period January 1982 to December 1982 was used in the present study. Relations in Southern Africa were researched through hypotheses concerning reciprocal relations. issues and conflictive or co-operative behaviour. The actors studied include states such as Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Non-state actors such as Swapo, the ANC, Unita and the PAC were also taken into consideration. It was found that the relations between South Africa and international actors in Southern Africa were reciprocal. Conflictive actions evoked conflictive reactions whereas co-operative actions evoked co-operative reactions. It was of interest that relations were mostly issue-orientated. The issues studied were security, economic, territorial and political. S.W.A./Namibia was also included as an issue. Security issues totally dominated relations in Southern Africa. Actions concerning security issues were found to be mostly conflictive and largely connected to the actor's attitude towards the ANC. Relations between South Africa and states such as Mozambique and Lesotho were very conflictive. These two states were outspoken supporters of the ANC. Quite the reverse applied to states such as Swaziland and Botswana. Neither of them supports the ANC materially and relations with South Africa were therefore more co-operative.

The written and the world in early medieval Iberia

Barrett, Graham David January 2015 (has links)
The written was the world of early medieval Iberia. Literacy was limited, but textuality was extensive, in the authority conferred on text and the arrangements made to use it. Roman inheritance is manifest, in documentary and legal culture, engendering literate expectations which define the period; continuity across conquest by Visigoths and Arabs, and the weakness of states in the north of the Peninsula, must lay to rest the traditional coupling of literacy with politics which underlies the paradigm of the Middle Ages. Between the eighth and eleventh centuries, as estates expanded to surmount locality and enter communities which had made do with memory, engagement with documentation was incentivized for the laity. Organization to do so followed, at one remove: the person of the scribe, who wrote the charter and recorded all those involved in and present at it, before recycling the text back into the community by public reading. The scribe mediated the text, and as his occupation consolidated he became more fully a literate interpreter. The charter, once created, had an active afterlife of dynamic circulation, enabled by multiple and accessible archives, particularly in the hands of the clergy. Written evidence was the surest defence in case of dispute; charters were self-promoting in their mutual citation as well as practical efficacy. But they also diffused legal knowledge: as each rhetorical, pragmatic, silent, and legislative reference to written law was read aloud by the scribe, how to capitalize on its provisions became better known, so kings and counts seized the potential. For the clergy, the Bible, canon law, and monastic rules were the texts which bestowed identity, but as they interacted with the laity, they set the charter in the history of salvation, and modelled textuality to society, as their monasteries became the microcosms of its written framework.

O sinal é este mesmo bilhete: uma tipologia documental para os escritos da roda dos expostos / This note is the signal: a document typology for the writings of the foundling wheels

Based on a philological perspective, this dissertation has studied the writing notes that accompanied the babies anonymously left at the Foundling Wheels to be raised by the charitable hospitals Misericordias (Holy Houses of Mercy). Conducting field research studies of four files at Santa Casa de Misericordia in Sao Paulo, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and Lisbon, we have built a corpus of 60 writing notes dated from 1790 to 1923. We have examined the context of circulation of said writings, the definition of frequent and/or proper terms from Foundling Wheels studies and considered the institutional, legal and historical background of the Foundling Wheels. We present the fax-simile reproduction, the semi-diplomatic transcription of the documents and the codicological description of the notes. Based on the diplomatic analysis of the corpus, we have examined the intrinsic and extrinsic elements that characterize them. The presence of signals that would enable future reclaim of the abandoned child is part of the writings found in the Wheels. There are many indications in the corpus writings, which may include textual and non-textual elements. We have divided the study of the writings into two main parts: expositio, in which the author provides information about the foundling (name of the child, date of birth, and whether the child had been baptized), and dispositio, in which the author states her/ his wills and intentions to the recipient (generally related to the signals and the child future reclaim). Based on typology studies, we have concluded that most of the writings from the Wheel corresponded to the document type letter, both in its function and format. We have also observed less frequent examples of other typological formats, such as poems, narratives, and lists. Even though the format is different, all four identified types included some essential information about the foundlings. This regularity of the Wheels\' writings indicates that, even though they were not official documents, these writings served as informal identification documents of the children. Although there are no officially prescribed formulas, we can infer that these writings have a typology that is characterized as part of the Foundling Wheel culture.

Art of Documentation: The Sherborne Missal and the Role of Documents in English Medieval Art

Berenbeim, Jessica January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation considers an unfamiliar but fundamental aspect of late-medieval art: the role of documentation. Documents played as critical a part in that society as they do in our own. In late-medieval consciousness, the charter loomed as large as the sacred image, and documentation mattered no less than devotion—while the two also had a profound and inextricable connection. Discussion begins with three principal arguments, explained in detail in the first chapter: 1. The materials of documentation are part of the history of art; and accordingly, art-historical methods render an important contribution to diplomatics. 2. Documents are an important subject of representation; and accordingly, works of art are important sources for the cultural reception of documentary practices. 3. Documents are an important model for representation; and, consequently, an understanding of the paradigmatic role of the document suggests an alternative dimension to the interpretation of late-medieval art. The chapters that follow pursue these arguments through the analysis of individual works of art—charters, seals, archival manuscripts, liturgical manuscripts, architecture, and sculpture. These chapters also include a study of one of the great monuments of English gothic art: the Sherborne Missal, produced c.1400 for the Benedictine abbey of Sherborne. Ideas of documentation constitute critical aspects both of the Missal’s subject matter and its modes of representation, and these “documentary” elements also relate closely to the larger ideological project of the Missal’s creators. As details of the manuscript’s patronage, illumination, liturgy, inscriptions, and codicology all demonstrate, its creators associated documentation with central religious ideas about devotional images and the eucharist—essentially, the nature of valid representation and effective action. In keeping with the regional and institutional context of this principal study, the other objects discussed come primarily from English religious institutions. That context, however, by no means implies that the importance of documentation is limited either to England or to the conventual sphere, although it manifests itself differently from place to place and from one estate to another. The studies in this thesis represent only one example of where its arguments might lead, and what its approach might reveal in other works of art. / History of Art and Architecture

Civil litigation, probate and bankruptcy procedures: a diplomatic examination of British Columbia Supreme Court records

Mitchell, Elizabeth Joan 11 1900 (has links)
For centuries, the theory and principles of diplomatics have played a role in the work of European archivists. In North America, however, its relevance is still under scrutiny. This thesis employs diplomatic analysis to test its validity when applied to modern documents and procedures. To investigate the significance of diplomatic methodology and analysis, this thesis first discusses the recent history and structure of the British Columbia court system. It then examines a selection of case files from the civil, probate and bankruptcy registries, and it assigns the documents within to one of the six phases of a procedure: initiative, inquiry, consultation, deliberation, deliberation control, and execution. The study concludes by discussing the diplomatic character of the procedures and its importance in the understanding of modern records. More specifically, it outlines how diplomatics and procedural analysis can assist records professionals in the development of classification systems and retention and disposition schedules; the design of automated records management systems; and archival appraisal, arrangement and description.
