Preparation and Electro-Optical Property of Discotic Liquid Crystals

Chang, Lun-hao 23 July 2012 (has links)
In this thesis we synthesize discotic liquid crystal materials. After demonstrating the molecular structures by 1H-NMR of Acid-6, we measure the properties of this material. We use discotic liquid crystal Acid-6 and measure its¡¦ properties. It shows the properties of Acid-6 which is having the ability of absorbing visible light. By UV-Vis spectrum, we can realize the absorption band is located at 400 nm and confirm that it is able to be a photo-sensitized dye. Besides, the property of discotic liquid crystal is the self-assembly ability, the molecular can assemble into hexagonal columnar structure by themselves, which enable discotic liquid crystal to have better mobility. The DSSCs have good power conversion efficiency with using discotic liquid crystals Acid-6. We can measure its¡¦ mobility to know the component with which the most appropriate.

Study of Charge Transport Properties of Discotic Liquid Crystal Semiconductors

Jian, Fei-Syong 13 August 2012 (has links)
Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs), which consist of disk-like molecules, have recently attracted considerable attention for their interesting electronic properties. One of the most significant of DLCs is their high charge carrier mobility in their columnar structure. Recently the number of researches have been increasing on applications such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), photovoltaic devices (OPV) and organic field-effect transistors (OFET). The purpose of the study is to investigate the mobility of different alignment of DLCs. The material used in the present study is HDBP-8. We will show that the stack of DLCs depended on temperature strongly. We will also discuss charge transport properties of homeotropic alignment. Carrier transport has been investigated in the hexagonal columnar (Colh) mesophase of HDBP-8 using time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The carrier mobilities are up to the order of 10-3 cm2V-1s-1 for both positive and negative charges with weak dependence on the electric fields.

Design and Synthesis of HAT-core as New Materials

Liao, Su-Chih 19 July 2005 (has links)
The common discotic mesogen molecules are known to have a flat structure, comprising a rigid core, e.g., polynuclear aromatic structure, and a ring of four to nine flexible aliphatic side chains. We take the electron deficient heterocyclic hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) as our central core and readily synthesized by the condensation of hexaketocyclohexane with the respective 1,2-bis-alkoxy-4,5-diaminobenzene. The new molecules with electron deficient discotic liquid crystal properties are successfully.

Synthesis of multi-Functional Discotic Liquid Crystal Dimers

Tzeng, Mei-chun 12 September 2006 (has links)
The scarcity of research about nitrogen containing heterocyclic discotic liquid crystal has made it an interesting subject for chemists. In this thesis, we will discuss the synthesis and properties of four kinds of new dimeric discotic liquid crystal in details. The first type of new dimeric discotic liquid crystals were synthesized based on a novel core structure, dibenzo[a,c]phenazine. All dimers linked by a hexyl-chain spacer exhibited columar phase. The range of mesomorphic temperature became wide as the chain length of spacer increased. Simultaneously, we also changed terminal chain length to investigate the influence on mesomorphic properties by attached terminal group. The second type of new dimeric discotic liquid crystals, which contained the dibenzoquinoxaline skeleton, didn¡¦t show the properties of mesomorphic phase due to the poverty of planality. The third type of molecules, which also have the dibenzoquinoxaline skeleton, were the banana-shaped discotic liquid crystals. We anticipated these dimeric molecules would demonstrate another special mesogenic phase. The last type of dimeric discotic liquid crystals were the extension of our previously research. These molecules, which comprised 5,6,11,12,17,18- hexaazatrinaphthylene skeleton, would be good candidates for using as a n-type material.

Preparation of Discotic Liquid Crystals with Application to Organic Thin-Film Transistor

Su, Jin-Fong 30 July 2008 (has links)
The thesis is divided into two parts. One is about the preparation of discotic liquid crystals Acid-6. The other is about the growth of Acid-6 thin film by thermal evaporation on silicon oxide surfaces and modified silicon oxide surfaces such as self-assembled monolayer(SAM) in different temperature. The surface morphology and molecular orientation of the thin film were studied by Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM) , X-ray Diffraction (XRD) , and then they were applicated to organic thin film transistor and measured properties by Semiconductor Parameter Analyzer. In the second part of our research, our expectative characteristics was not observed in different temperature and substructure. In the other side, we guessed that because discotic liquid crystals Acid-6 is negative semiconductor materials, so it is susceptible to hydrosphere, thus we can¡¦t observe the electric characteristic of OTFT in the atmosphere. In addition, due to discotic liquid crystals Acid-6 have biggish moleculer weight, thus its viscosity was so big that cause the diameter of Acid-6 crystals to be too small. Therefore, it influenced the carrier mobility. Finally, from the aspect of procedure about fabrication of the devices we can discuss whether this parameter of this device can apply to OTFT.

Self-assembly of amphiphilic discotic materials

Van Schalkwyk, Welmarie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The creation of nanometer-scale (nanoscale) materials has fascinated and inspired the scientific community for more than a quarter of a century because of the wide range of applications of these materials, e.g. applications in drug delivery, medicine, tissue engineering, memory storage, display and audio devices, semiconductors, etc. π-Conjugated dendrimers have a proposed flat packing arrangement. An alternating phenyl isoxazole dendrimer system was developed to investigate this phenomenon. The synthesis of this dendritic system was attempted by divergent and convergent approaches. Preparation of the second generation failed because some functional groups inhibited the monomers to react to the first generation. Other examples of nano materials that have attracted a vast amount of interest are the so-called discotic amphiphiles. Discotic amphiphilic molecules have the potential to self-assemble into helical architectures. Discotic systems bearing chiral polar side chains (one and three respectively) were developed. Their self-assembly was investigated in variable concentration and variable solvent composition experiments. These systems did show signs of aggregation in UV-vis and CD spectroscopy experiments. Thread-like helical structures were observed with transmission electron microscopy.

Preparation and Electro-Optical Property of Novel Discotic Liquid Crystals and Poly(acrylamide) Dispersed LC with Application to Organic Solar Cells

Fan, To-cheng 08 August 2007 (has links)
In this thesis we synthesize two organic materials, one is discotic liquid crystal Acid-6, and the other is novel discotic liquid crystal polymer DLC-PAM. After demonstrating the molecular structures of Acid-6 and DLC-PAM by FT-MS, 1H-NMR and FT-IR, we use the two materials as photo-sensitized dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) and manufacture two kinds of cells. We use polyacrylamide(PAM) as main chain of the novel discotic liquid crystal polymer DLC-PAM and graft the discotic liquid crystal monomer Acid-6 onto PAM by chemical synthesis. DLC-PAM belongs to side-chain liquid crystal polymer, and it can show the properties of it¡¦s discotic liquid crystal function. One of the properties is absorption of visible light. By observing the UV-Vis spectrum, we can realize the absorption band is located between 200 ~ 450 nm and confirm that it is able to be a photo-sensitized dye. Another property of discotic liquid crystal is the self-assembly ability, the moleculars can assemble into hexagonal columnar structure by themselves, and the property enable discotic liquid crystal to have better mobility. In this part, we can demonstrate DLC-PAM and Acid-6 really have hexagonal columnar structure by X-ray diffractmeter. After qualitative demonstrating and optical analysis, we use DLC-PAM and Acid-6 as photo-sensitized dyes for DSSCs and manufacture two kinds of cells successfully. The more photocurrent occur when the two DSSCs are woking. Besides, the two DSSCs have good performance on power conversion efficiency which can achieve 0.047 % for DLC-PAM and 0.364 % for Acid-6. Therefore, in this research we prove that DLC-PAM and Acid-6 are able to be photo-sensitized dyes for DSSCs and successfully demonstrate that using the two materials to manufacture DSSCs is feasible.
