Socialtjänsten i tidningar : En kvalitativ studie av hur socialtjänstens arbete framställs i lokala och nationella svenska tidningar i samband med fem barnavårdsärenden / Social services in newspapers : A qualitative study of how social services work is produced in local and national Swedish newspapers in connection with five child welfare casesJosefsson, Catrin, Persson, Magdalena January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to make a qualitative study of how social services work is produced in local and national Swedish newspapers in connection with five child welfare cases. The starting point of the study was qualitative and based on five selected childcare cases with a total of 136 articles. To analyze these articles discourse analysis was used with inspiration from Foucault. The material was analyzed from the theory of framing and the concepts of power and scapegoat. The results and analysis section are divided into three main themes with subheadings. The first theme is about how it is written about the work of social services based on child welfare cases. The second theme is about scapegoats and the third theme deals with the similarities and differences we have found between the national and local newspaper articles. The results of the study have shown that the social services work with children and young people is presented as responsible for the events that are written and as an organization with deficiency. The result has also shown that the media has the power to choose who will be heard, what to publish and how to write about events. We have also analyzed how the newspapers choose to frame and highlight certain perspectives of an event through the theory of framing. We have found differences and similarities between how national and local newspapers write about social services work with children and young people.

Containment? : an investigation into psychoanalytic containment and whether it is provided by staff in an NHS institution in relation to someone with a diagnosis of personality disorderWeightman, Elizabeth Caroline January 2016 (has links)
This research investigated the psychoanalytic idea of containment in the context of NHS staff responses to a person diagnosed with personality disorder. The aim was to identify what, if any, containment was provided by staff for someone diagnosed with personality disorder by recording staff responses to an assessment and analysing the discourse. The research was undertaken with participants selected to represent a cross section of staff in the organisation and included senior and junior, clinical, administrative and managerial staff. The discourse analysis of the interviews examined defences against containment such as splitting, projective identification and idealisation and the positions people occupied in relation to the material and the researcher, as well as looking for examples of containment. Reflexivity was a key part of the methodology, forms a significant part of the thesis and is used to contribute to the discussion. Reflexivity, findings from the review of the literature and the analysis of the interviews form the basis of the discussion and conclusions. The research showed that containment, in its psychoanalytic sense, is often avoided and defended against. Key difficulties with developing the capacity for containment were found to be: conflict between the personal and professional in staff and anxiety in relation to the power of others in the organisation. Suggestions are made for how changes could be made within the organisation and how this could benefit both staff and people who use services. Changing the approach to containment could save costs as some repeat admissions could be avoided and staff satisfaction enhanced. The conclusions from the research make a contribution to clinical practice in NHS settings, to the psychoanalytic theory of containment and to the methodology of psychoanalytic discourse analysis. Recommendations for further research include more psychoanalytic discourse analysis to identify defences in text and research evaluating reflective staff groups.

January 2018 (has links)
January 2018 (has links)
“CFL has its patient zero”: A Critical Examination of HIV Nondisclosure in the Trevis Smith CaseBogosavljevic, Katarina 30 August 2018 (has links)
Canada is currently the world leader in the number of per capita prosecutions of HIV nondisclosure (Hastings, 2017). Many of these cases garner the attention of media and receive sensational and dramatic coverage. This thesis provides a feminist critical discourse analysis of the juridical and mediated content on Trevis Smith who was a former Canadian Football League linebacker convicted of aggravated sexual assault for not disclosing to his sexual partners that he was living with HIV. Mobilizing an intersectional (Crenshaw, 1989, 1991) and masculinities (Connell, 2005/1995; Messerschmidt, 2012; 2016) theoretical framework, I specifically explored the ways in which the media and juridical content constituted Smith by considering how the different discourses were shaped by race, gender, class, criminality, sexual orientation, and seropositivity.
The analysis revealed three main discourses: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The “Sodom and Ghomorrah of Shared Sexual Partners” and Playing a Dangerous Game. These discourses demonstrate that Smith was initially shown sympathy by way of his construction as a philanthropist, and sports hero. However, as the case progressed his masculinity was discursively linked to racialized tropes of hypersexuality, dangerousness, and criminality due to his failure to disclose that he was HIV positive. I conclude that these discursive connections are part of a broader historical narrative that subjugates and controls Black men while also working to symbolically and literally segregate the Canadian HIV-negative social body from the hypersexual Black ‘AIDS fiend’.

Reproducing Intersex Trouble: An Analysis of the M.C. Case in the MediaLane, Jamie M. 21 March 2018 (has links)
How do members of the media represent intersex people? Do the voices of intersex activists find their way into mainstream media representations, or are they ignored? What types of discourses are produced by the presence (or lack thereof) of activist voices in news articles? The goal of this thesis is to interrogate the discourse surrounding intersex, or individuals who fall outside of the typical male/female binary for sex classification, and intersex activism in the media. The legal case M.C. vs. Aaronson, settled in 2017, was one of the first legal cases in the United States involving an intersex person. This thesis analyzes the media coverage of this case. As much of the public is still unaware of the issues facing intersex people today, media representations of intersex have the ability to make great strides in promoting awareness about the goals of intersex activism. Therefore, it is vital to investigate the way that media representations construct ideas about intersex and intersex activism. Utilizing feminist critical discourse analysis in conjunction with a “Media Guide” produced by a leading intersex organization called InterACT, I dissect seven articles written about the M.C. vs Aaronson case to study the way that their authors reproduce harmful ideas about intersex people. I focus on four specific aspects of these articles: the way they utilize photos of babies and children, the erasure of M.C.’s race, the way the articles discuss sex and gender, and who is quoted in each article. I also make the case that the InterACT “Media Guide”, while a step in the right direction, continues the perpetuation of dangerous intersex tropes.

Hounding the urban fox : a Critical Discourse Analysis of a moral panic with an animal folk devilGroling, Jessica Sarah January 2016 (has links)
In June 2010 an urban fox (Vulpes vulpes) attacked twin baby girls in their bedroom in Hackney, East London. The story made national newspaper headlines for weeks to follow and elicited commentary from concerned city-dwellers, pest controllers, foxhunters, politicians, scientists and animal protectionists. Many considered urban foxes a growing menace, branding them overabundant, out of place and more aggressive than their rural counterparts. Hunters pointed to the ban on hunting with dogs as a possible cause of a supposed explosion in the urban fox population and as a manifestation of urban ignorance regarding wildlife management. Others defended the foxes' place in the city and warned against knee-jerk reactions to one-off incidents. However, the response from many public and political figures to media reports of fox attacks was to call for urgent action on what is ostensibly a problem of animal behaviour. This thesis examines the urban fox attack phenomenon as a form of moral panic. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of a large sample of tabloid and broadsheet national newspaper articles, as well as a selection of television documentaries, pest control industry publications and lobby group materials spanning five years (2009–2014), is used to track the emergence and development of this moral panic and to examine how it is tied to anxieties surrounding not only human/animal relations in urban space, but also human social conflict more widely. In so doing, the thesis contributes a new perspective to the study of moral panics by reflecting on the implications for moral panic theory of ‘bringing animals in’.

Previous issue date: 2007 / The proposal of this work is to identify and to describe the metadiscourse functions exercised by referential expressions. Identified these expressions still aimed at to present an analysis proposal for the evaluative content of these tends in view the influence of the writer positioning observation for the text sense construction. We considered the referential expressions object-of-speech just as the referring is conceived in the theory of the referenciation, as define it Apothéloz and Reichler-Beguelin (1995); Mondada and Dubois (2003); Marcuschi and Koch (1998). The second theory, regarding the metadiscourse, takes as principal theoretical presupposition the rhetorical notion elaborated by Hyland (1998). The elaboration of the methodology of the research felt by the classification of Cavalcante (2004 b and c) for the referential expressions; the classification of Hyland(1998, 2005) for the metadiscurso. As base for the analysis of the content axiológico of the referencial expressions with metadiscourse function, we used some categories of the Critical Discourse Analysis.

The role of psychodynamics in linguistics : applying the tradition of Melanie Klein to the analysis of conversational interactionHoyle, Robert January 1989 (has links)
Linguistics has developed elaborate accounts of the social aspects of language use - 'how to do things with words' - but the emotional-dynamic aspects have hitherto received less attention. Such discussions of emotive or affective meaning as there have been have tended to concentrate on the linguistic resources that are coded into the language system, rather than the dynamics of emotional interaction enacted through language use. The clinical discipline of Kleinian psychoanalysis, by contrast, has made emotional dynamics its central concern. Furthermore the main tool of the psychoanalyst's trade is the verbal interpretation of the patient's material, much of which is itself verbal. These factors have led to the development in Kleinian psychodynamic theory of a particularly rich vocabulary for understanding emotional-dynamic interaction, and specifically those aspects which are verbally enacted. The goal of this thesis is to outline a linguistic theory of emotional dynamics based on insights derived from Kleinian psychoanalysis. It aims to extrapolate from a clinical context Kleinian ideas that can be integrated with those of the school of Linguistic thought that has emphasised the dynamic aspects of locally-managed discourse meaning.
