Matching renewable electricity supply to electricity demand in ScotlandCommin, Andrew Neil January 2015 (has links)
The threat of climate change has led to many countries and regions adopting renewable targets. Scotland's is one of the most ambitious, with an aim to generate the equivalent to 100% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020. Scotland has a very large renewable resource, primarily consisting of offshore and onshore wind, tidal stream, wave and hydro power; all of which are characterised by having variable output. Over a long period, such as a year, variability in renewable generation will average out and may meet or exceed total annual demand. This thesis investigates whether matching of demand and generation is possible within a timescale meaningful to electricity system users; that is whether renewable generation can meet electricity demand in any given hour. This was established by using historic data to create an hourly generation hindcast of Scotland's renewable generation over a 30 year climate “normal” period. These outputs are then compared to a hindcast of hourly demand based on observations over the most recent few years. The results demonstrated that it is possible for Scotland to rely entirely upon renewable generation to fulfil demand in any hour of the 30 year hindcast. However, it appears that the renewable capacity and storage currently built or within the Scottish planning system is only sufficient to match demand in 65% of the hours within the hindcast. The hindcast allows judgements to be made as to how 100% of demand could be met most effectively and provides the basis of a coherent planning strategy, with security of supply at its centre. Further wave and tidal stream capacity is shown to be of higher value than additional wind power but in the latter case, addressing the geographical diversity of wind power can enable maximise phasing between sites to increase the security of supply. Importantly this work provides a means of informing decision making about where best to develop wind, wave and tidal resources and what additional storage may be required in order to provide 100% security of supply. The results are also of particular importance to Scotland's renewable generation strategy in the case of assessing where new on- and off-shore wind farms should be developed, as wind is set to dominate Scotland's renewable portfolio for the foreseeable future.

No / In this study, a new methodology to optimally allocate wind turbines (WTs) in distribution networks is proposed. A market-based optimal power flow is used to determine the optimal numbers and capacities of WTs in a way that maximises the social welfare. The method is conceived for distribution network operators to strategically allocate WTs in distribution networks. The proposed method by yielding location-specific WTs capacity settlement both in terms of cost reduction and consumers' benefits is consistent with distribution network topology and constraints. The method is solved by using step-controlled primal dual interior point method considering network constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with two radial distribution systems including an 84-bus 11.4 kV and a 69-bus 11 kV network.

The ability of liberalised electricity markets to trigger investment in the generation capacity required to maintain an acceptable level of security of supply risk has been - and will continue to be - a topic of much debate. Like many capital intensive industries, generation investment suffers from long lead and construction times, lumpiness of capacity change and high uncertainty. As a result, the ‘boom-and-bust’ investment cycle phenomenon, characterised by overcapacity and low prices, followed by power shortages and high prices, is a prominent feature in the debate. Modelling the dynamics of generation investment in market environments can provide insights into the complexities involved and address the challenges of market design. Further, many governments who preside over liberalised energy markets are developing policies aimed at promoting investment in renewable generation. Of particular interest is the mix and amount of generation investment over time in response to policies promoting high penetrations of variable output renewable power such as wind. Consequently, improved methods to calculate expected output, costs and revenue of thermal generation subject to varying load and random independent thermal outages in a power system with a high wind penetration are needed. In this interdisciplinary project engineering tools are applied to an economic problem together with knowledge from numerous other disciplines. A dynamic simulation model of the aggregated Great Britain (GB) generation investment market has been developed. Investment is viewed as a negative feedback control mechanism with current and future energy prices acting as the feedback signal. Other disciplines called upon include the use of stochastic processes to address uncertainties such as future fuel prices, and economic theory to gain insights into investor behaviour. An ‘energy-only’ market setting is used where generation companies use a classical NPV approach together with the Value at Risk criterion for investment decisions. Market price mark-ups due to market power are also accounted for. The model’s ability to simulate the market trends witnessed in GB since early 2001 is scrutinised with encouraging findings reported. A reasonably good agreement of the model with reality, gives a degree of confidence in the realism of future projections. An advancement to the dynamic model to account for expected high wind penetrations is also included. Building on the initial model iteration, the short-term energy market is simulated using probabilistic production costing based on theMix of Normals distribution technique with a residual load calculation (load net of wind output). Wind speed measurement data is combined with the outputs of atmospheric models to assess the availability of the GB wind resource and its relationship with aggregate load. Simulation results for 2010-40 suggest that the GB system may experience increased generation adequacy risk during the mid to late the 2020s. In addition, many new investments are unable to recover their fixed costs. This triggered an investigation into the design of a capacity mechanism within the context of the modelling environment. In light of the ongoing GB market electricity market reform debate, two mechanisms are tested; a strategic reserve tender and a marketwide capacity market. The goal of these mechanisms is to mitigate generation adequacy risk concerns by achieving a target winter peak de-rated capacity margin.

Resumo: Este projeto de pesquisa tem por objetivo apresentar propostas para aprimoramento das principais normas e resoluções envolvidas, dentre as quais o PRODIST, quanto à metodologia para apuração do indicador de distorçõ de tensão harmôica total, bem como trazer contribuições para o processo de análise de compatibilidade de cargas potencialmente perturbadoras na qualidade da energia elétrica em sistemas de distribuição, através de uma visão proativa, ou seja, atuando principalmente no momento que antecede a instalação destas cargas. Estas propostas foram elaboradas a partir da análise e discussão dos resultados obtidos através dos ensaios realizados em um estudo de caso compreendendo a análise de ligação de um novo forno de indução em uma Fundição atendida por uma concessionárias de distribuição do Estado de São Paulo. Um histórico geral situando a qualidade da energia elétrica no setor elétrico é apresentado, as principais normas, resoluções e estudos técnicos são discutidos, e as diretrizes metodológicas e procedimentos utilizados nos ensaios experimentais são detalhados. A análise e discussão dos resultados é elaborada procurando responder às principais perguntas surgidas durante a investigação técnico-científica e a realização dos procedimentos, bem como indicando outros questionamentos a serem estudados, através da apresentação das propostas e indicações para trabalhos futuros / Abstract: This research project aims to present proposals for improvement of key standards and resolutions involved, among which the PRODIST, on the methodology for calculating the indicator of voltage total harmonic distortion, and should contribute to the analysis process of the potentially disturbance impacts of loads on power quality in distribution system, through a proactive vision, ie, working mainly in the moment before the installation of these loads. Those proposals were developed from the analysis and discussion of results obtained through tests on a case study including analysis of the connection of a new induction furnace in a froundry fed by a distribution utility in the State of São Paulo. A general historical situating the quality of electric energy in the sector is presented, the main standards, technical studies and resolutions are discussed, and methodological guidelines and procedures used in experimental trials are detailed. Previous research shows that truancy in upper secondary school positively correlates to the student’s future level of involvement in society. As such, in order to support an individual’s positive development, it is essential to work with early interventions to increase school attendance. One such preventive initiative is to employ full-time mentors who specifically hold the responsibility to monitor and follow-up student’s absence. This study focuses on full-time mentors working in upper-secondary school, and aims to examine a student’s perspective on the work of the full-time mentors. Collection of material has been done through the execution of eight semi-structured interviews with eight students in an upper secondary school in Stockholm, Sweden. The student’s statements have been interpreted and analyzed from the theoretical standpoint of social constructivism. As such, in this study, the work of the mentor as well as the student’s perception of the mentor’s role, is perceived as part of a social process and consequently dependent on its context. This means that components such as the distribution of power between student and mentor have been relevant to consider, in relation to interventions meant to increase student attendance. The study highlights the importance of using communicative tools, and mutual conversations, as well as building and maintaining well-functioning relationships between students and mentors. The result shows that the way that full-time mentors communicate with students, could be made more explicit, so that routines and expectations leading from that communication is clear to the student. In addition, the study’s result also indicate that full-time mentors could better adapt their way of communicating, in order to avoid an unbalanced power distribution between the full-time mentor and the student. The conclusion of the study is that communicative tools, such as relationship-creating and mutual conversations, when thoughtfully applied, can increase participation in school and as such, reduce absence.

It was intended to analyze comparative power loss dependences for various cross-section 10 kV cables too. Electric power loss calculations according to average load current are made for the real distribution network.
