A Common Representation Format for Multimedia Documents

Multimedia documents are composed of multiple file format combinations, such as image and text, image and sound, or image, text and sound. The type of multimedia document determines the form of analysis for knowledge architecture design and retrieval methods. Over the last few decades, theories of text analysis have been proposed and applied effectively. In recent years, theories of image and sound analysis have been proposed to work with text retrieval systems and progressed quickly due in part to rapid progress in computer processing speed. Retrieval of multimedia documents formerly was divided into the categories of image and text, and image and sound. While standard retrieval process begins from text only, methods are developing that allow the retrieval process to be accomplished simultaneously using text and image. Although image processing for feature extraction and text processing for term extractions are well understood, there are no prior methods that can combine these two features into a single data structure. This dissertation will introduce a common representation format for multimedia documents (CRFMD) composed of both images and text. For image and text analysis, two techniques are used: the Lorenz Information Measurement and the Word Code. A new process named Jeong's Transform is demonstrated for extraction of text and image features, combining the two previous measurements to form a single data structure. Finally, this single data measurements to form a single data structure. Finally, this single data structure is analyzed by using multi-dimensional scaling. This allows multimedia objects to be represented on a two-dimensional graph as vectors. The distance between vectors represents the magnitude of the difference between multimedia documents. This study shows that image classification on a given test set is dramatically improved when text features are encoded together with image features. This effect appears to hold true even when the available text is diffused and is not uniform with the image features. This retrieval system works by representing a multimedia document as a single data structure. CRFMD is applicable to other areas of multimedia document retrieval and processing, such as medical image retrieval, World Wide Web searching, and museum collection retrieval.

Using customised image processing for noise reduction to extract data from early 20th century African newspapers

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, 2017 / The images from the African articles dataset presented challenges to the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tool. Despite successful binerisation in the Image Processing step of the pipeline, noise remained in the foreground of the images. This noise caused the OCR tool to misinterpret the text from the images and thus needed removal from the foreground. The technique involved the application of the Maximally Stable Extremal Region (MSER) algorithm, borrowed from Scene-Text Detection, and supervised machine learning classifiers. The algorithm creates regions from the foreground elements. Regions are classifiable into noise and characters based on the characteristics of their shapes. Classifiers were trained to recognise noise and characters. The technique is useful for a researcher wanting to process and analyse the large dataset. They could semi-automate the foreground noise-removal process using this technique. This would allow for better quality OCR output, for use in the Text Analysis step of the pipeline. Better OCR quality means less compromises would be required at the Text Analysis step. These concessions can lead to false results when searching noisy text. Fewer compromises means simpler, less error-prone analysis and more trustworthy results. The technique was tested against specifically selected images from the dataset which exhibited noise. It involved a number of steps. Training regions were selected and manually classified. After training and running many classifiers, the highest performing classifier was selected. The classifier categorised regions from all images. New images were created by removing noise regions from the original images. To discover whether an improvement in the OCR output was achieved, a text comparison was conducted. OCR text was generated from both the original and processed images. The two outputs of each image were compared for similarity against the test text. The test text was a manually created version of the expected OCR output per image. The similarity test for both original and processed images produced a score. A change in the similarity score indicated whether the technique had successfully removed noise or not. The test results showed that blotches in the foreground could be removed, and OCR output improved. Bleed-through and page fold noise was not removable. For images affected by noise blotches, this technique can be applied and hence less concessions will be needed when processing the text generated from those images. / CK2018

Les fonds d'archives forment de grandes quantités de documents difficiles à interpréter automatiquement : les approches classiques imposent un lourd effort de conception, sans parvenir à empêcher la production d'erreurs qu'il faut corriger après les traitements.Face à ces limites, notre travail vise à améliorer la processus d'interprétation, en conservant un fonctionnement page par page, et en lui apportant des informations contextuelles extraites du fonds documentaire ou fournies par des opérateurs humains.Nous proposons une extension ciblée de la description d'une page qui permet la mise en place systématique d'échanges entre le processus d'interprétation et son environnement. Un mécanisme global itératif gère l'apport progressif d'informations contextuelles à ce processus, ce qui améliore l'interprétation.L'utilisation de ces nouveaux outils pour le traitement de documents du XVIIIe siècle a montré qu'il était facile d'intégrer nos propositions à un système existant, que sa conception restait simple, et que l'effort de correction pouvait être diminué. / Fonds, also called historical document collections, are important amounts of digitized documents which are difficult to interpret automatically: usual approaches require a lot of work during design, but do not manage to avoid producing many errors which have to be corrected after processing.To cope with those limitations, our work aimed at improving the interpretation process by making use of information extracted from the fond, or provided by human operators, while keeping a page by page processing.We proposed a simple extension of page description language which permits to automatically generate information exchange between the interpretation process and its environment. A global iterative mechanism progressively brings contextual information to the later process, and improves interpretation.Experiments and application of those new tools for the processing of documents from the 18th century showed that our propositions were easy to integrate in an existing system, that its design is still simple, and that required manual corrections were reduced.

Machine Vision Assisted In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Recently there has been a lot of effort in developing systems for sampling and automatically classifying plankton from the oceans. Existing methods assume the specimens have already been precisely segmented, or aim at analyzing images containing single specimen (extraction of their features and/or recognition of specimens as single targets in-focus in small images). The resolution in the existing systems is limiting. Our goal is to develop automated, very high resolution image sensing of critically important, yet under-sampled, components of the planktonic community by addressing both the physical sensing system (e.g. camera, lighting, depth of field), as well as crucial image extraction and recognition routines. The objective of this thesis is to develop a framework that aims at (i) the detection and segmentation of all organisms of interest automatically, directly from the raw data, while filtering out the noise and out-of-focus instances, (ii) extract the best features from images and (iii) identify and classify the plankton species. Our approach focusses on utilizing the full computational power of a multicore system by implementing a parallel programming approach that can process large volumes of high resolution plankton images obtained from our newly designed imaging system (In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS)). We compare some of the widely used segmentation methods with emphasis on accuracy and speed to find the one that works best on our data. We design a robust, scalable, fully automated system for high-throughput processing of the ISIIS imagery.
