Sind wir nicht alle ein bisschen Dora? Eine Untersuchung der Funktion psychischer Krankheit anhand der Raumkonstruktion in Irena Vrkljans Buch über Dora

Riethmuller, Antje 15 August 2013 (has links)
We often encounter mental illness in our daily lives. People who are diagnosed with a mental disorder are marked as different and thereby stigmatized and confined to spacial isolation. This thesis analyzes the function of mental illness by examining the protagonist of Irena Vrkljan's Buch über Dora. I argue that in Buch über Dora stigmatization and isolation of otherness becomes visible in how the book's protagonist is excluded from certain spaces. My main question is which role is ascribed to Dora by society. Othering – and therefore excluding – mentally ill persons such as Dora is necessary to establish the order of society. Another important issue are the similarities between Dora and other female characters in the novel. The symptoms of the pressure to succumb to societal norms are shared by the first person narrator, among others. It is my aim to show that and how all woman can easily be pushed into Dora's role. This leads to the central question or my thesis: Are we not all a bit like Dora? To date, Irena Vrkljan's works have been largely neglected by the germanic academic community. Germanistik has not yet found a way to accommodate her bilingual and bicultural oeuvre. The first part of my thesis addresses this issue. The second part develops a constructivist theoretical framework for my analysis of space. First, I draw on the work of Michel Foucault "Of Other Spaces", "Discipline And Punish", and "Madness And Cilvilization", in which he describes space as a construct that reproduces societal norms. Second, Sigmund Freud's "Fragments of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria" helps to grasp how mental illness is pathologized. While Foucault focuses on the function of norms, Freud analyses the consequences of aberrant behaviour for women. The third part focuses on the fragmentary structure of the novel and continues with an detailed analysis of heterotopias such as the cemetery, Dora's room, the market and the untended park. By identifying with Dora, Buch über Dora questions the norms and shows her otherness as something that we all share. She may be stigmatized as mentally ill but she is by no means fundamentally different to other women.

Telling Freud's Story: The Fictionalization of Freud

Kramer, Kirstin M January 2005 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Robin Lydenberg / The figure of Sigmund Freud haunts the modern consciousness, but popular culture too often reduces Freud to a simplistic set of concepts or a figure of fun. The popular image of Freud is a reduction, a caricature – a fiction. The fictionalization of Freud is hardly a new development, however: the first person to fictionalize Freud was Freud himself. In writings such as The Interpretation of Dreams and the Dora case, Freud tells his own story, as well as the stories of his developing theory of psychoanalysis and his patient Ida Bauer. Writers like Hélène Cixous continue in Freud's own tradition as they probe Freud's unconscious mind and challenge his public persona, creating a portrait of Freud that is not a reductive caricature, but a thoughtful meditation on his personality and ideas. The following paper examines the ways that telling Freud's story can be meaningful and fruitful. Exploring the fictionalization of Freud suggests that any attempt to turn a real person into a text is in some sense a fictionalization and that this process is an essential part of the way that human beings understand others and the self. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2005. / Submitted to: Boston College. Among these poets, Dora Ferreira da Silva (1919-2006) presented a poetry that allows the development of a reflection about poetry and the world, making it possible to reflect on the matter that the existence of the being is also linked to their language ability. Through a thematic discussion, this study aimed to demonstrate that the poet Dora Ferreira da Silva articulates poetry and thinking and approximates both modes of language in order to reach the truth. For this, the first part of the discussion made considerations about the relation between poetry and thinking, commenting on the development of ideas around this question. In order to better understand the peculiarities of poetry and its relationship with the construction of thinking, it was discussed the amorphic nature of the lyric as a result of subjectivity and its relation with thinking. In addition, the study aimed to bring to discussion truth and subjectivity, calling the poetic path course of Dora Ferreira da Silva and the articulation of her thinking in her poetic productions. Furthermore, it was taken into consideration the assumptions of the philosopher Martin Heidegger, in particular his contributions about the concept of truth, in order to point to the ongoing crisis between literature and philosophy and Heidegger's criticism about the metaphysics and the traditional philosophy. This work also commented on the concept of truth in the Western philosophical view and introduced the notion of Martin Heidegger on truth, taking as reference his work Being and Time (1995) - a study that supports the concept of Heidegger's true. Based on Heidegger's postulate in his work The origin of the work of art (2002) - reflection that presents the art as an event of truth – this study also discussed how the art has a ontological position by just consist of the happening of truth. Still guided by Heidegger, analytical observations were sustained about Dora Ferreira da Silva's work, demonstrating how the poet thinks the world and thus reaches the truth. Among the many poems of the author, it was considered, that is, criticized those considered emblematic and therefore able to identify Dora Ferreira da Silva and her poetic composition. Finally, the work dealt with the dialogue between poetry and thinking, pointing to what is the truth in Dora Ferreira da Silva's poetry. Here, art and thinking were related to existential and religious concerns of the poet studied.
