An investigation of factors responsible for the dropout rates at Gert Sibande FET CollegeMasemola, Tebogo Percians Portia 06 1900 (has links)
The study investigated the factors that are responsible for student dropout rates at Gert Sibande FET College. A random sampling method was used to select participants for this study. A quantitative approach was used in this study. Accordingly, data were collected using a questionnaire designed in a Likert scale format. The study was limited to students at Gert Sibande FET College’s two campuses, namely, Evander and Sibanesetfu. Subsequently, the findings revealed that socio-economic factors, institutional policies and funding strongly explain the prevalent dropout rates at these two campuses. It is recommended that, adoption of student centred funding model, cultivation of relationships between lecturers and students as well as restructuring learning schedules be factored in during policy development. The findings confirmed that these recommendations would help reverse continuous dropouts currently experienced at Gert Sibande FET College. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. Didactic conversation and transactional distance : a case study of retention and throughput of accounting studentsVan Rooyen, Annelien Adriana 07 1900 (has links)
The study was necessitated by the fact that the throughput rates of accounting
students studying at distance learning institutions in South Africa are disturbingly low
when compared to students studying at residential universities. Bearing in mind the
magnitude of the University of South Africa’s (Unisa’s) market share of accounting
students in South Africa, it was pivotal to comprehend the unique challenges related
to retention and throughput of these students. This thesis reports on a case study of
the use of mobile phones in an Accounting module by applying the theories of
didactic conversation and transactional distance to understand the retention and
throughput rates of the Accounting students in an open distance learning (ODL)
environment. Considering the landscape of accounting education in South Africa, the
specific challenges faced by accounting students at Unisa and the recent scholarly
discourse on retention and throughput of distance education students, this study
contributes to the limited theoretical understanding of students’ retention and
throughput rates in an Accounting module at Unisa.
This theoretical understanding has been obtained through combining the
transactional distance theory of Moore (1973) and the didactic conversation of Holmberg (1982) in a single conceptual framework. By applying this framework, this
thesis makes an original contribution to the deepening understanding of the retention
and throughput rates of accounting students in an ODL environment. The study has
shown that retention and throughput rates can be improved through the lessening of
the transactional distance between facilitator and student and by improving the
quality and extent of the two-way didactic conversation in the learning process.
To this effect, the study provided empirical evidence of the successful use of various
complementing technology interventions, suitable for accounting students with time
constraints, to enhance the learning process. / Management Accounting / D. Com.

Dropout causes of students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme in South African universitiesMabuza, Nonhlanhla Herieglietias 23 October 2020 (has links)
The dropout of students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a
perennial problem in many higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa. Despite this, little
research has been conducted to investigate this phenomenon, and this study sought to address
this gap by investigating the dropout of NSFAS-funded students from HEIs in Northern Gauteng.
The study adopted a qualitative methodology and a phenomenological design to explore the lived
experiences of students who dropped out of HEIs. Thirty-one NSFAS-funded students, three
senior management officials from three HEIs and one NSFAS senior official were purposively
selected to form part of the study. Semi-structured interviews, document analysis and
observations were utilised as reseach instruments and interpretative phenomenological analysis
(IPA) was employed to analyse data.
The findings of the study established that a lack of support for students, and personal,
socioeconomic, institutional and health factors contributed to the dropout of students from HEIs.
It was further established that the majority of students who dropped out did so because of the
inefficient operations of NSFAS and the new student-centred model. The study also found that
insufficient funding, late allocation of funds, stringent NSFAS requirements, lack of
communication, late payment or nonpayment of allowances contributed to students’ dropout. To
address these shortfalls, the study recommends that the student-centred model should be
overhauled and replaced with an integrated system including departments such as DOH, SARS,
DSD and DOL to identify students who are eligible for funding and assist in the efficient
administration of NSFAS. It is further recommended that funding administered by both the national
and provincial government departments be centralized and administred by the NSFAS to
circumvent double dipping. Finally, it is recommended that students who fall within the R0 – R350,000 per annum household income category including SASSA beneficiaries be flagged by
the system to automatically qualify for funding. / Educational Management and Leadership / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Factors contributing to low completion rates of National Certificate Vocational (NCV) students at a TVET college in the Northwest ProvinceNthako, Matshwenyego Dorothy 01 1900 (has links)
This study was interested in investigating the factors contributing to low completion rates at
a TVET college in the North-West Province. There is not much research conducted on the
low completion rates at TVET Colleges in South Africa. The study sought to explore the
understanding of completion rates at TVET Colleges, the current completion rates and the
causes and the strategies that might be employed to increase the completion rates.
Qualitative methodology was used to collect data, using semi-structured interviews for all
the focus group interviews. Collected data were transcribed, interpreted, analysed and the
findings were presented. The study revealed that factors contributing to the low completion
rates are finance and management issues, staff problems, policy factors, socio-economic
factors and students’ personal factors that require attention in order to increase the
completion rates. These include lecturer qualifications, student funding, inadequate
infrastructure, drug and substance abuse, involvement of stakeholders and lack of adherence
to policies.
The study recommends proper administration of students’ bursaries, effective Quality
Management System (QMS), lecturer development, adequate infrastructure and efficient
policies to be implemented.
The study might draw the attention of the DHET, the college management and other
stakeholders in order to come up with interventions to remedy the low completion rates at
TVET Colleges. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. Ed. (Educational Management)

Strategies to support sustained learning in open distance and e-learning in a South African contextTafirenyika, Nancy 30 October 2020 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Afrikaans / The worldwide growth of open distance and e-Learning cannot be denied, nor can it remain unnoticed. In the South African setting, which is the focus of this study, the increasingly high demand for higher education has also led to the development of distance education. However, the throughput rate for this mode of education has been consistently unimpressive for over a decade and this has led to high dropout rates. There is cause for concern regarding how best to assist students and improve throughput. Therefore, this research has focused on identifying strategies that can be incorporated to support sustained learning in South African ODeL. It considers issues such as the social inequalities, previous disadvantages, and ICT affordances that characterise South African ODeL students.
This research took a qualitative research approach, using a case study that was conducted as a dissertation of limited scope. The aim was to unveil the best approaches that could be incorporated in South African ODeL in order to support sustained learning. The study attempted to understand such strategies, based on students' perceptions and reflections on their experiences while studying first-level modules in distance education. The case for this research study was the University of South Africa (UNISA), where eight student participants were interviewed, using semi-structured interviews to collect data.
The findings of this study revealed that there are some readily available resources that the institution and instructors can use to promote sustained learning and improve student throughput. This research recommends frequent student surveys to discover student needs and the challenges that they experience. It also recommends improved communication with students, provision of financial aid, development of open educational resources (OERs), ensuring rapid delivery of study material, and the use of different methods of delivering learning content.
It is important to note that the findings of this dissertation are of limited scope and cannot be generalised to the issues affecting the majority of South African ODeL students – this because the study was carried out at one institution and involved just one module and eight participants. However, these findings have the potential to enlighten ODeL stakeholders as to matters affecting some of their students. The findings could also provide valuable information for future large-scale research. / Ukudlondlobala kohlelo kohlelo lwemfundo evulekile nokufunda kude kanye nohlelo lwe-inthanethi akunakuphikiswa, futhi angeke kwathathwa sengathi akunakiwe.
Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Open Distance Learning)

The challenges of teaching at-risk learners at a secondary school in Cape TownOyewo, Saheed Adekunle 01 1900 (has links)
The study focused on the challenges of teaching at-risk learners at secondary schools. A qualitative investigation based on interviewing and observation was conducted with sixteen teachers teaching at-risk learners. Findings revealed that pre-service teacher training does not prepare teachers adequately to teach learners at risk constructively. Findings also revealed that at-risk learners have no control over themselves due to lack of parental support as parents show no commitment and support for their children’s education. Interventions to counter challenges with teaching at-risk learners relate to applicable preservice teacher training to engage with at-risk learners constructively and continuous in-service teacher training as professional development to empower teachers to engage with at-risk learners appropriately. At-risk learners must value second-chance education opportunities with schools ensuring that a supportive school culture prevails.
The study contributes to the discourse on effective teaching practices to support at-risk learners for acceptable academic attainment. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Influence of national certificate vocational students’ academic support on the throughput rate at a TVET college in the Free State ProvinceMakibinyane, Julius Motala 21 April 2021 (has links)
Abstract in English, Sesotho and French / Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa face several challenges including low throughput rate. Low throughput rates have a strong bearing on the success of the TVET sector and its ability to respond to the needs of the country, such as skills shortages. The aim of the study was to investigate the implications of the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) students’ academic support on the throughput rate at the selected TVET college. Qualitative research methodology has been used to help the researcher to explore and gather rich information on the college throughput rate and provision of academic support. The study utilised a case study design. Participants were student support services and academic staff at the selected TVET college. The collection of participants in this research was using a purposive sampling technique. The researcher recorded and transcribed semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data is based on thematic data. The themes used were derived from the research objectives and further broken down into categories and sub-categories.
The study found that there are various factors that influence the students’ academic performance and the throughput rate such as students’ family background, academic difficulties, poor class attendance, poor infrastructure, lack of professional development opportunities, lack of career guidance, lack of academic support and shortage of Student Support Services (SSS) staff. The study also found that students are not making use of the student support services because of lack of information about the SSS unit at the college. Without proper students’ academic support programmes, students are likely not to succeed academically. Various challenges that hinder the effective utilisation of the academic support services include lack of qualified personnel, being understaffed, low prioritisation of academic support programmes by college management and limited access time. The college needs to develop ties with key stakeholders such as other TVET colleges and the Department of Basic Education to provide a forum for sharing crucial academic support information. The researcher suggests that more trained and qualified personnel should be hired to support students’ academic support. Administration of admission tests for students should be enhanced, and the test results should be available round the clock. College management should demonstrate dedication to the well-being of students by prioritising and acknowledging academic support as vital to the academic performance of students. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Guidelines for parents, teachers and professionals in the handling of rebellious childrenMathye, Lethabo Violet 11 1900 (has links)
Rebelliousness is the act of defying lawful authority or a resistant way of relating to authority.
It is seen by many as a normal way of development.
The development of rebellious behavior actually starts in childhood and progresses through
to adulthood.
The study focuses on the manner in which the family and school handle the rebellious child and the negative effects that these have on the child's development. These problems may manifest in truancy, delinquency, negativism, runaway, antisocial behavior, alcohol and substance abuse and gang involvement.
The results of the study prove that the environment in which the adolescent lives, contribute greatly to the development and the maintenance of rebellious
behavior.
Guidelines were written for parents, teachers and psychologists regarding the handling of the
rebellious child. / Psychology of Education / M.Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)
