Nouvelles méthodes de tri des déchets par rayons X / New methods of waste sorting by X-ray

Les travaux proposés portent sur la caractérisation par rayons X des matériaux, en vue du tri de certains d'entre eux dans un flux de déchets. L'objectif final du tri est la valorisation de certains matériaux par le biais des circuits de recyclage. Deux méthodes d'analyse utilisant les rayons X sont décrites : la méthode par transmission bi-énergie et la fluorescence X. Ces deux méthodes sont abordées sous un angle théorique et expérimental. Le mémoire se compose de trois parties. La première partie présente le contexte général de l'étude, les différents scénarios de tri envisagés, les différentes méthodes existantes ainsi que les machines de tri industrielles déjà commercialisées. La seconde partie est consacrée à l'analyse par transmission X bi-énergie. Dans cette partie nous présentons tout d'abord le principe de la décomposition d'un matériau dans une base de deux autres matériaux. Ensuite nous utilisons un code de simulation analytique développé au laboratoire afin d'une part d'optimiser la géométrie du détecteur mais également de prévoir les performances de cette méthode en fonction des scénarios et des matériaux recherchés. Nous avons introduit un critère permettant de quantifier la performance d'un scénario donné. Cette méthode a permis de montrer que plusieurs scénarios de tri et en particulier celui du tri des retardateurs de flamme dans un flux de plastiques sont envisageables par cette méthode. Un prototype de machine industrielle a été construit par la société Bertin Technologies et installé dans les locaux de la société Pellenc ST pour réaliser des tests en conditions réelles de tri. Les résultats de simulation ont été comparés aux essais en conditions réelles. Cette partie se conclue avec une introduction aux méthodes multi-énergie. La troisième et dernière partie s'intéresse à la fluorescence X. L'objectif est de mettre au point une méthode permettant d'identifier la nature du matériau en tenant compte des contraintes industrielles (temps d'acquisition faible), c'est-à-dire lorsque le niveau de signal contenu dans le spectre de fluorescence est faible et bruité. Un banc expérimental a été mis au point au laboratoire et a permis de définir la limite de détection qui dépend du matériau analysé et du temps d'acquisition pour réaliser la mesure. Le second point développé dans cette partie est la mise au point d'une technique de simulation de fluorescence combinant le calcul analytique et le calcul par méthode Monte Carlo. L'avantage de cette technique est d'avoir une méthode de simulation plus rapide par rapport à un calcul qui serait réalisé entièrement par Monte Carlo. En conclusion, nous discutons de la complémentarité des informations issues de ces différentes techniques ainsi que leurs avantages et inconvénients. / The proposed work focuses on the characterization of materials by X-ray to sort some of them in a waste stream. The main aim is the valorization of certain of these materials through recycling loops. Two methods of analysis using X-rays are described : dual energy X-ray transmission and X-ray fluorescence. These two methods are discussed from a theoretical and experimental point of view. The memory consists of four parts. The first part presents the general context of the study, the different sorting scenarios considered, the existing methods and industrial sorting systems already in application. The second part is devoted to analysis by dual energy X-ray transmission. In this section we first present the principle of decomposition of a material in a basis of two other materials. Then we use the VXI simulation tool to optimize the geometry of the detector and to predict the performances of the method according to the scenarios and refined materials. This method showed that several sorting scenarios and particularly sorting of flame retardants in plastic flow are possible by this method. An industrial prototype was built by Bertin Technologies and installed in the premises of Pellenc ST to realize sorting tests under actual conditions. Then the results of simulation have been compared to these tests. This section concludes with an introduction of multi-energy methods. The third part deals with X-ray fluorescence. The aim is to develop a method to identify the nature of the material even if the signal contained in its fluorescence spectrum is low and noisy. A experimental bench was developed in the laboratory to define the limit of detection wich depends on the material analyzed and the acquisition time of the measurement. The second point developed in this part is the development of a simulation technique that combines fluorescence analytical calculation and Monte Carlo calculation. The advantage of this technique is to have a faster simulation method compared to a calculation that would be fully realized by Monte Carlo. In conclusion, we discuss the complementarity of information extracted from these different techniques and their respective advantages and drawbacks.

Dual Energy CT as a Foundation for Proton Therapy Treatmen Planning - A pilot study

The treatment plan for radiation therapy with protons is based on images from a computed tomography (CT) scanner. This is problematic since the photons in the x-ray beam from the CT scanner and the protons are affected differently by the tissue in the patient, which introduce an uncertainty in the track length of the protons. The hypothesis of this study is that a new generation of CT scanners (DECT), with the capacity to simultaneously scan the patient with two photon spectra of different mean energy, will improve the tissue characterisation and which in turn reduce the uncertainty in the track length of the protons. In this study, the accuracy and precision of a DECT-based method from the literature is compared to the conventional calibration method used today at the University clinics in Sweden to relate the attenuation of the photon beam to the slowing down of the protons. The methods are tested on CT images of a phantom, a plastic body containing tissue equivalent plastic inserts of known elemental composition. The results turned out to be inconclusive as there were large uncertainties in the measurements. The method has potential, as has been shown in the literature, but there are many questions that need to be answered before the method is ready to be implemented at the clinic. / En proton som färdas genom människokroppen deponerar endast en liten del av sin energi längs vägen innan den plötsligt deponerar allt i slutet på dess bana. Hur lång dess bana är beror på protonens ursprungliga energi och den atomära sammansättningen hos vävnaden den passerar igenom. Om sammansättningen är känd går det genom att justera den initiala energin bestämma banlängden. Denna egenskap gör protonen väldigt attraktiv för strålterpi, då det innbär möjligheten att behandla med hög precision samt bespara frisk vävnad onödig dos. Strålterapi med protoner planeras idag med bilder från en skiktröntgen (CT) som underlag. Ett problem med det är att röntgenstrålarna från CT-skannern påverkas annorlunda än protonerna av vävnaden, vilket introducerar en osäkerhet i protonernas banlängd. Hypotesen i denna studie är att en ny generation av CT-scanner (DECT), med möjlighet att simultant skanna patienten med två fotonspektran av olika medelenergi, på ett bättre sätt ska kunna bestämma den atomära sammansättningen för vävnaden och därmed reducera osäkerheten i protonernas banlängd. Noggrannhet och precision för en DECT-baserad metod från litteraturen jämförs med den SECT-baserade kalibreringsmetoden, som idag används på Universitetssjukhusen i Sverige för att relatera fotonstrålens dämpning i vävnaden till protonernas inbromsning. Metoderna testas på CT bilder av ett fantom, en plastkropp innehållandes olika cylindrar av vävnadsekvivalent plast med känd atomär sammansättning. Resultatet av den här studien är inte starkt nog för att bevisa hypotesen för studien. Det insamlade bildmaterialet innehåller höga brusnivåer jämfört med de som rapporteras i literaturen. Brusnivåer är så höga att det mesta av resultatet inte kan anses som statistiskt signifikant. Det är dessutom svårt att göra en direkt jämförelse av prestanda med befintlig teori för vävnadskaraktärisering, då bildmaterialet från de CT skanners som jämfördes är av olika typer. De resultat som publicerats i litteraturen visar att den DECT-baserade metoden har potential, men den här studien gör tydligt att det fortfarande finns frågor som måste besvaras innan metoden är redo att implementeras kliniskt.

Uso da separação automática por sensor de raio X na pré-concentração de minérios : ferro e zinco

O COMEX Lab-Sorter MSX-400-VL-XR-3D (Sorter) foi avaliado, sob diferentes condições operacionais em relação a sua capacidade de realizar testes de pré-concentração em escala laboratorial, visando o uso dos resultados gerados para aplicação industrial. Para tal, 24 testes de separação (bem como mais testes de calibração) foram realizados para dois minérios diferentes (a base de ferro e zinco). Nesses testes, aproximadamente 73 kg de minério foram avaliados para fins de separação no equipamento acima citado. Este mostrou a capacidade de aumentar o teor do minério de ferro acima de 60% Fe, aproveitando assim de 46% da massa do material no tamanho Lump (-31 +12,7mm) que era anteriormente classificado como rejeito pela mina e tinha um teor de apenas 53% de Fe. Com respeito do Zinco, o equipamento recuperou 93% do minério de zinco, aumentando seu teor acima de 27% Zn. Dessa forma, o Sorter eliminou 27% da massa do ROM a ser alimentado na planta de benefíciamento da mina de zinco. As configurações de porcentagem ideal para o ferro eram de 150-220 threshold e 75% porcentagem, e para o zinco as configurações ideais eram de 0-100 threshold para a granulometria maior (-50 +19 mm) e de 0-150 para a granulometria menor (-25 +8mm), ambos com 75% porcentagem. / The MS-400-VL-XR-3D COMEX Lab-Sorter (Sorter) was evaluated under different operating conditions for its ability to carry out pre-concentration tests at the laboratory scale, with the intention of using the results generated for industrial application. To this end, 24 separation tests (and many more calibration tests) were performed for two different ores (iron and zinc). In these tests, more than 73 kg of ore was passed, particle per particle in the equipment. The Sorter showed the ability to increase the iron ore content to over 60% Fe, thus taking advantage of 46% of the mass of the Lump size material (-31 + 12.7mm) that was previously classified as waste and had a grade of only 53% Fe. With respect to Zinc, the Sorter recovered 93% of the zinc ore, increasing its content above 27% Zn. In this way, the Sorter eliminated 27% of the ROM mass to be fed into the zinc mine beneficiation plant. The ideal percentage configurations for the iron were 150-220 threshold and 75% percentage, and for zinc the ideal configurations were 0-100 threshold for the large particle size (-50 +19 mm) and 0-150 for the small particle size (-25 + 8mm), both with 75% percentage.

Avaliação da confiabilidade e concordância de métodos de avaliação da composição corporal em mulheres no período reprodutivo / Evaluation of reliability and consistency of body composition assessment methods in women in reproductive period

Objetivos: Avaliar a composição corporal através da medida das dobras cutâneas (DC) intra e inter observador em mulheres na fase reprodutiva. Estimar a confiabilidade de dois protocolos de medidas de dobras cutâneas com o método Absorciometria Radiológica de Dupla Energia (DEXA). Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 90 mulheres com faixa etária de 18 a 37 anos, com Índice de Massa Corporal entre 18 e <= 39,9 Kg/m². A reprodutibilidade dos métodos foram avaliados pelos coeficientes de correlação de concordância (CCC) e coeficiente de Saint Laurent e pelos limites de concordância e gráficos de Bland-Altman. Resultados: A comparação intra observador foi excelente (CCC = 0,99) para os valores das medidas de DC tricipital, supraíliaca, coxa, soma das dobras e percentual de gordura. O mesmo ocorreu na comparação inter observador (CCC = 0,99). As medidas das DC tricipital foram as que apresentaram maior CCC (0,98), seguido da medida da coxa (0,90), e a medida da DC da suprailíaca foi a menor (0,89). A soma das DC e o percentual de gordura tiveram valores de 0,95. Já os protocolos de medidas de DC comparados entre si e com o padrão ouro DEXA, obtiveram valores de concordância baixa (0,35). Conclusões: Nossos achados mostraram que a comparação intra e inter observador foi satisfatória, contribuindo para a reprodutibilidade das medidas de DC. Os protocolos de avaliação das DC não tiveram concordância quando comparados com a DEXA / Objectives: Assessing body composition by measuring the intra and inter observer skin folds in women in the reproductive phase and estimate the reliability of two protocols skinfold measures with radiographic absorptiometry method of dual energy absorptiometry (DEXA). Methods: The sample consisted of 170 women aged 18-37 years with body mass index between 18 and <= 39.9 kg / m². The reproducibility of methods and skinfold thickness were evaluated by the coefficient of concordance correlation (CCC) and coefficient of Saint Laurent and the limits of agreement and Bland-Altman. Results: Comparison intra observer was excellent with the same values of the CCC (0.99) for the measurements of skinfold thickness of the triceps, suprailiac, thigh and fat percentage. The same occurred in the comparison inter observer (CCC = 0.99). The measures of skinfold thickness of the triceps showed the greatest CCC (0.98), followed by thigh (0.90), and the suprailiac was the lowest (0.89). The sum of the measurements of skinfold thickness and the percentage of fat had CCC values of 0.95. Already the reliability of two protocols skinfold thickness measures compared with the gold standard DEXA method was low (CCC = 0.35). Conclusions: Our findings showed that compared intra and inter observer was satisfactory, contributing to the reproducibility of skin folds. Assessment protocols skinfold did not have agreement when compared with DEXA

Advances in dual-energy computed tomography imaging of radiological properties

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has shown great potential in the reduction of uncertainties of proton ranges and low energy photon cross section estimation used in radiation therapy planning. The work presented herein investigated three contributions for advancing DECT applications. 1) A linear and separable two-parameter DECT, the basis vector model (BVM) was used to estimate proton stopping power. Compared to other nonlinear two-parameter models in the literature, the BVM model shows a comparable accuracy achieved for typical human tissues. This model outperforms other nonlinear models in estimations of linear attenuation coefficients. This is the first study to clearly illustrate the advantages of linear model not only in accurately mapping radiological quantities for radiation therapy, but also in providing a unique model for accurate linear forward projection modelling, which is needed by the statistical iterative reconstruction (SIR) and other advanced DECT reconstruction algorithms. 2) Accurate DECT requires knowledge of x-ray beam properties. Using the Birch-Marshall1 model and beam hardening correction coefficients encoded in a CT scanner’s sinogram header files, an efficient and accurate way to estimate the x-ray spectrum is proposed. The merits of the proposed technique lie in requiring no physical transmission measurement after a one-time calibration against an independently measured spectrum. This technique can also be used in monitoring the aging of x-ray CT tubes. 3) An iterative filtered back projection with anatomical constraint (iFBP-AC) algorithm was also implemented on a digital phantom to evaluate its ability in mitigating beam hardening effects and supporting accurate material decomposition for in vivo imaging of photon cross section and proton stopping power. Compared to iFBP without constraints, both algorithms demonstrate high efficiency of convergence. For an idealized digital phantom, similar accuracy was observed under a noiseless situation. With clinically achievable noise level added to the sinograms, iFBP-AC greatly outperforms iFBP in prediction of photon linear attenuation at low energy, i.e., 28 keV. The estimated mean errors of iFBP and iFBP-AC for cortical bone are 1% and 0.7%, respectively; the standard deviations are 0.6% and 5%, respectively. The achieved accuracy of iFBP-AC shows robustness versus contrast level. Similar mean errors are maintained for muscle tissue. The standard deviation achieved by iFBP-AC is 1.2%. In contrast, the standard deviation yielded by iFBP is about 20.2%. The algorithm of iFBP-AC shows potential application of quantitative measurement of DECT. The contributions in this thesis aim to improve the clinical performance of DECT.

Εκτίμηση του βαθμού οστεοπενίας και οστεοπόρωσης σε ομόζυγους β-θαλασσαιμικούς ασθενείς. Σύγκριση και συσχέτιση των αποτελεσμάτων της διπλής φωτονιακής απορρόφησης (DXA) με αυτά της ποσοτικής υπολογιστικής τομογραφίας (QCT)

Ένα από τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά της ομόζυγης β-θαλασσαιμίας είναι η οστεοπάθεια, η οποία αποτελεί μία πολυπαραγοντική διαταραχή, που δεν έχει πλήρως διευκρινισθεί. Μελετήσαμε τους οσφυϊκούς σπονδύλους 48 ασθενών με τις μεθόδους Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) και Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT), και εστιάσαμε στις δομικές οστικές ιδιότητες, όπως προσδιορίζονται από την υψηλής ευκρίνειας Υπολογιστική τομογραφία (HRCT). Οι τιμές της οστικής πυκνότητας (BMD values) εκφράσθηκαν ως Z-scores και τα αποτελέσματα συσχετίσθηκαν. Εκτιμήθηκε η επίδραση της ηλικίας, του φύλου, του τύπου της θαλασσαιμίας και των ορμονικών παραγόντων στις τιμές ΒΜD. Αξιολογήσαμε, με βάση την HRCT, την ακεραιότητα του φλοιού και τον αριθμό και πάχος των δοκίδων της σπογγώδους ουσίας. Με βάση τον αριθμό των δοκίδων ταξινομήσαμε τους ασθενείς σε κλίμακα τριών βαθμίδων. Τα αποτελέσματά μας έδειξαν ότι ο συνολικός επιπολασμός της οστεοπόρωσης με την μέθοδο DXA ήταν 44 % και με την QCT 6 %. Και οι δύο μέθοδοι έδειξαν μία αρνητική συσχέτιση μεταξύ της ηλικίας και της BMD, ενώ οι ορμονικοί παράγοντες παρουσίασαν συσχετίσεις τόσο με τις μετρήσεις της QCT όσο και με τις αντίστοιχες της DXA. Ο συντελεστής συσχέτισης μεταξύ της BMD της DXA και της σπογγώδους BMD της QCT ήταν 0,545 (p<0,001) ενώ η αντίστοιχη τιμή για τα Ζ-scores ήταν 0,491 (p<0,001). Η ομαδοποίηση των ασθενών σε φυσιολογικούς, οστεοπενικούς και οστεοπορωτικούς, με βάση το Ζ της QCT, ήταν σε καλύτερη συμφωνία με την ταξινόμηση με βάση τον αριθμό των δοκίδων (K=0,209, p=0,053), σε σύγκριση με την ομαδοποίηση σύμφωνα με το Ζ της μεθόδου DXA (K=0,145, p=0,120). Η εκτίμηση του φλοιού με την HRCT έδειξε διακοπές στη συνέχειά του σε 15 ασθενείς. Και οι δύο μέθοδοι δείχνουν μία επιδείνωση της οστεοπόρωσης με την πρόοδο της ηλικίας. Η ανεπάρκεια των ορμονών συσχετίζεται με την θαλασσαιμική οστεοπόρωση, ενώ η οτπική εκτίμηση του φλοιώδους οστού δείχνει ότι οι ενδιάμεσου τύπου θαλασσαιμικοί πάσχουν σε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό από τους ασθενείς με μείζονα μορφή θαλασσαιμίας. Με τον αριθμό των δοκίδων ως δείκτη οστεοπόρωσης, φαίνεται ότι η QCT μπορεί να εκτιμήσει την οστεοπάθεια καλύτερα από την DXA. Δεδομένου ότι η QCT έχει την ικανότητα να μετρήσει την οστική πυκνότητα του σπογγώδους και φλοιώδους οστού, ξεχωριστά, μπορεί να παρέχει πρώιμη ένδειξη του ποιο από τα δύο μεταβάλλεται πιο γρήγορα και σε τι βαθμό. - / Osteopathy, as a major feature of homozygous beta-thalassaemia, is a multifactorial disorder, not fully understood. We studied the lumbar vertebrae of 48 patients using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT), and we focused on structural properties, assessed by High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT). Bone Mineral Density (BMD) values were expressed as Z scores and the results were correlated. The effect of age, sex, type of thalassaemia and hormonal factors on BMD was assessed. We estimated, with HRCT, the cortex integrity and the number and thickness of trabeculae; the latter were classified to a three-grade scale. Our results showed the overall prevalence of osteoporosis to be 44 % with DXA and 6 % with QCT. Both techniques revealed an inverse correlation between age and BMD, whereas hormonal factors demonstrated associations with QCT and DXA measurements. The correlation coefficient between DXA’s BMD and QCT’s trabecular BMD was 0.545 (p<0.001) whereas the corresponding value for Z scores was r=0.491 (p<0.001). The classification of the patients into normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic categories, using QCT’s Z, was in better agreement with the assignment based on trabecular number (K=0.209, p=0.053) than the classification using DXA’s Z (K=0.145, p=0.120). Cortex evaluation by HRCT showed discontinuity in 15 patients. Both methods indicate a progression of osteoporosis with age. Hormonal deficiency is associated with thalassaemic osteoporosis whereas the visual estimation of cortex indicate that TI could be more affected than TM. Using the trabecular number as an indicator of osteoporosis, it seems that QCT may evaluate osteopathy better than DXA. Since the former has the ability to measure trabecular and cortical BMD separately, it could give early indication of which changes more rapidly and to what degree.

Body fat distribution, inflammation and cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major health issues of our time. The prevalence of CVD is increasing, both in industrialized and in developing countries, and causes suffering and a decreased quality of life for millions of people worldwide. CVD can have multiple etiologies, but the main underlying cause is atherosclerosis, which causes blood clot formation and obstructs vital arteries. Multiple risk factors of atherosclerosis have been identified, and body fatness is one of the most important ones.  The main aims of this thesis were to investigate the relation between body fatness and: CVD risk factors (paper I), incident stroke (paper II), and overall mortality (paper III). The results showed that abdominal obesity is strongly associated with both CVD risk factors and stroke incidence (papers I-II). The results also suggested that a substantial part of the association between increased body fat and stroke can be explained by an increase in traditional stroke risk factors associated with increased body fat (paper II). A gynoid fat distribution, with a high share of fat located around the hip, is, on the other hand, associated with lower risk factor levels in both men and women, and with a decreased risk of stroke in women (papers I-II). This illustrates the importance of assessing the overall distribution of body fat rather, than solely focusing on total body fatness. In elderly women, total body fat was found to be associated with increased survival, while abdominal fat moderately increased mortality risk (paper III). Lean mass (fat-free mass) was strongly associated with increased survival among elderly men and women (paper III). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is an indicator of inflammation and, possibly, an indicator of atherosclerotic disease. In paper IV, the relationship between ESR in young adulthood and the later risk of myocardial infarction (MI) was studied. Results showed that higher levels of ESR were associated with a higher MI risk, in a dose-responsive manner, and was independent of other well-established risk factors. In summary, both total and regional fat distribution are associated with CVD risk factors and stroke, but do not seem to correspond to an increase in mortality risk among the elderly. Also, inflammation, detected as an increase in ESR, is associated with long term MI risk in young men.

3D reconstruction of the proximal femur and lumbar vertebrae from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry for osteoporotic risk assessment

In this thesis a method was developed to reconstruct both the 3D shape and the BMD distribution of bone structures from Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) images. The method incorporates a statistical model built from a large dataset of Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) scans together with a 3D-2D intensity based registration process. The method was evaluated for its ability to reconstruct the proximal femur from a single DXA image. The resulting parameters of the reconstructions were subsequently evaluated for their hip fracture discrimination ability. The reconstruction method was finally extended to the reconstruction of the lumbar vertebrae from anteroposterior and lateral DXA, thereby incorporating a multi-object and multi-view approach. These techniques can potentially improve the fracture risk estimation accuracy over current clinical practice. / En esta tesis se desarrolló un método para reconstruir tanto la forma 3D de estructuras óseas como la distribución de la DMO a partir de una sola imagen de DXA. El método incorpora un modelo estadístico construido a partir de una gran base de datos de QCT junto con una técnica de registro 3D-2D basada en intensidades. Se ha evaluado la capacidad del método para reconstruir la parte proximal del fémur a partir de una imagen DXA. Los parámetros resultantes de las reconstrucciones fueron evaluados posteriormente por su capacidad en discriminar una fractura de cadera. Por fin, se extendió el método a la reconstrucción de las vértebras lumbares a partir de DXA anteroposterior y lateral incorporando así un enfoque multi-objeto y multi-vista. Estos técnicas pueden potencialmente mejorar la precisión en la estimación del riesgo de fractura respecto a la estimación que ofrece la práctica clínica actual.

The aim of this project is the application of Dual Energy technique in breast phantoms using Complimentary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS)Active-Pixel-Sensor (APS). This includes both, lab experimentation on developed breast phantoms, as well as simulations validating the results. Initially, phantoms were carefully prepared simulating the properties of real breast tissue and were imaged using X-ray unit. The next step in this project involved image processing and data representation. Using the dual energy technique, different concentrations of contrast agent (Iodine) were measured to relate clinical to medium kinetic measurements. With respect to this projects‟ clinical application, the implementation of this technique can be used to evaluate the iodine projected thickness (mg/cm2) using Contrast Enhanced Digital Mammography (CEDM) based on Dual Energy technique for the breast cancer detection. / Ο στόχος του εργασίας αυτής είναι η εφαρμογή της τεχνικής Διπλής Ενέργειας σε ομοιώματα μαστού χρησιμοποιώντας Complimentary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) Active-Pixel-Sensor (APS). Αυτό περιλαμβάνει, τον πειραματισμό σε αναπτυγμένα ομοιώματα μαστού, καθώς και προσομοιώσεις για την επικύρωση των αποτελεσμάτων. Αρχικά, κατασκευάστηκαν προσεκτικά τα ομοιώματα μαστού όπου προσομοιώνουν τις πραγματικές ιδιότητες των ιστών του μαστού και στη συνέχεια απεικονίστηκαν με χρήση μονάδων ακτίνων-Χ . Η εφαρμογή αυτής της τεχνικής μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για να αξιολογήσει το προβλεπόμενο πάχος του ιωδίου (mg/cm^2) χρησιμοποιώντας Ενίσχυση Αντίθεσης στην Ψηφιακή Μαστογραφία βασίσμένη στην τεχνική της διπλής ενέργειας για την ανίχνευση του καρκίνου του μαστού.
