Modern Urban Utopias And The Case Of Dubai

Soydemir Gokcek, Esin 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Is the concept of the urban utopia now defunct? This is a study of the modern urban utopias of the late 20th century, investigated their recent qualities in respect to capitalist mode of production. Accordingly, a recent example, that of Dubai, will be studied and its rapid growth over the last 20 years will be questioned. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide an understanding of how and to what extent flexible accumulation requires a spatial fix, in particular in new geographies, and mobilizes urban utopias for its own sake. The research will rely on the premise that modern urban utopias are mere reflections of capitalist ideologies.

The Studies on the Practical Execution of Taiwan Commercial Shipping Associated With the Cases of Stowaway.

Ko, Chai-lin 01 September 2008 (has links)
Captain is a key player for controlling the commercial shipping and has the major role in dealing with the occurrence and process of stowaway case. His decision on handling the stowaway is often complicated by the unnecessary legal issues if it is not following the normal process such as the violation of unlawful action on processing the stowaway issue. The stowaway case always has been a serious problem in commercial shipping. It often causes unnecessary legal issues for shipping owner and captain because of unwise decision from the ship captain. Since the occurrence of 911 terrorism in 2001, International Ship and Port facility Security Code (ISPS Code) has adopted more restrict security code on the prevention of stowaway, but it has indirectly resulted in the tendency toward underground and better organized shipping stowaway crime. This change has also provided guidance for captain¡¦s decision on the process of stowaway case. The present study illustrates two important stowaway cases occurred at Taiwan commercial shipping lines. One is related to liner, the Maersk Dubai, and the other is for tramp, the Well Pescadoies. The present study made comparison on both case handling processes and their treatments on stowaways and the problems of derived legal actions resulting from the unwise and unnecessary actions from the ship captains. The study adopted the person to person interview results and discussion with ship captains, literature search, and case legal documents for analyzing the possible process problem of stowaway associated with both cases. The present study summarized the precautionary approaches and guidance for ship owner and captain on the prevention of stowaway and the requirement of ISPSC code including related IMO convention, protocol, and regulation. Other main concerns are how to promote the shipping security including the duty of captain and the interests of shipping owner.

Rethinking Dubai’s urbanism : generating sustainable form-based urban design strategies for an integrated neighborhood / Generating sustainable form-based urban design strategies for an integrated neighborhood

Alawadi, Khaled Abdulrahman 25 January 2012 (has links)
I conducted a case study analysis of Dubai, exploring multiple urban design tactics for a more sustainable development approach to Dubai’s pattern of development. Particularly, this dissertation identifies sustainable urban form design principles and strategies for a Dubai neighborhood. The research addresses the question: which form-based urban design strategies effectively deliver greater environmental, social, and economic coherence in Dubai’s neighborhood development? In addition, this research addresses the question of whether certain urban form design principles contribute comparatively more than others to sustainability. I used two rounds of the Delphi technique, a structured communication technique utilizing multiple rounds of questioning, to obtain experts’ knowledge and opinions to redefine urbanism in Dubai towards more ecological and social responsive practices. My analysis of the Delphi reveal that in Dubai, the most sustainable neighborhoods are those emphasizing more public participation in the initial planning process, i.e., connectivity and multiple transportation options; adequate diversity; green, open, and social nodes in the urban fabric; culturally-relevant urbanism and architecture; climate-sensitive urbanism and architecture; eco-balanced design applications; and adaptability, all integrated with one another in the compactly arranged urban fabric. Approaches to sustainable development must stress elements other than just design itself, such as grasping the nuances of the cultural traditions, politics, and implementation constraints. Therefore, this research also involved collecting survey responses from local and expatiate residents in Dubai and interviewing Dubai government officials in order to identify and to understand the relevant political and cultural aspects as well as obstacles associated with the experts’ design recommendations. In particular, survey responses were used to: (1) identify the public opinion surrounding some of the Dubai neighborhood design ideas suggested by an international and local panel of experts; and (2) understand how the public value and prioritize the suitability of the proposed design strategies to Dubai’s cultural environment. Interviews with the local authorities in Dubai facilitated (1) the determination of troublesome challenges and constraints for implementing some of the urban design strategies defined by experts in the Delphi; and (2) identification of implementation opportunities and possible policy initiatives that might support the implementation of the proposed strategies. I also synthesized all research data to identify areas of overlap and disagreement among research participants (the experts, public, and government officials). Finally, the last chapter discusses two major obstacles challenging different aspects of sustainability. I also detail a potential solution to prevail over the challenges, and introduce potential areas of future research. / text

Företagskulturens inverkan på den enskilde individen : en fallstudie av IKEA Kalmar och IKEA Dubai

Eriksson, Jon, Mankonen, Tim January 2008 (has links)

Livable City: Filling in the Gaps of Instant Urbanism

Darvish-Zargar Behsheed 25 November 2010 (has links)
A living city must exist at every scale - from the urban to the pedestrian; the development of the 21st century Instant City, however, does not allow for this multiplicity of scales. These cities emerge instead in a type of hyper-reality, driven by the pursuit of capital and power. In the frenzy to grow, the resulting urban condition is alienating - one devoid of human scale. Looking to modern Dubai as an example of the dehumanized city, this thesis explores the reinterpretation of a traditional bazaar as a tool to challenge this existing form of urbanism. By way of an intervention that exploits the connective potential of pedestrian infrastructure, the project seeks to add a layer of social and physical complexity to a ‘dead’ city.

Exploring strategic leadership challenges in achieving an ICT enabled transformational government

Elnaghi, Marwan January 2011 (has links)
This empirical research focuses on exploring the role of strategic leadership in the shift from Electronic Government (eGovernment) to Transformational Government (tGovernment). Despite the fact that many countries have implemented eGovernment, the literature reports a number of themhave failed to reach the promised seamless transformation. Moreover, there is a dearth of research into the domain of tGovernment; the research which exists is limited in extent thus leaving scope for timely and novel research contributions. This thesis reveals that a valuable contribution to knowledge could be derived from exploring the domain of transformational government. The leadership motivationand incentives to conduct a radical government organisational change have become an area of great importance. There is limited research on the strategic role of leadership in achieving transformational government domain; hence, the implications of seamless integration for transformational government have yet to be explored. This research discusses transformational government by using a qualitative, multiple case study research strategy. Data is triangulated and analysed according to its explanatory properties and underlying structural context. This researchextends established norms in literature for tGovernment implementation by incorporating established theories in organisational change from other related disciplines. This is to explain the significance of the underlying philosophical nature of the emerging themes, thus enabling government leaders to create robust strategic proposals for tGovernment. This empirical research is conducted in a Middle Eastern cultural context based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The research arrives at several key findings and themesthat contribute to the body of knowledge. A primary finding is the need for a radical change and an innovative managerial approach in using ICT to enable radical change in government organisations. A related finding of this research is that many assumptions underlying the various tGovernment models for transformation fall short to empirically explain the transformational government domain. The government visionary leadership has been proven to be a powerful driver for change in terms of initiating and leading the process for transformational government.

The importance of aligning managerial characteristics to functional strategy in public sector organisations : an empirical study of Dubai government

Sebaa, Ali Ahmed January 2010 (has links)
Managerial characteristics have an important influence on strategy implementation. Previous studies have looked at the alignment of managerial characteristics with strategic type and aspects of performance. In all cases, the focus has been on corporate strategy and, predominantly, in private sector organisations. This study combines these objectives and investigates alignment between managerial characteristics, strategy and perceived performance. It focuses on management at the functional level in a public sector setting and demonstrates that classical upper-echelon theory is also relevant when applied at the functional level of management. The Miles and Snow (1978) typology is applied to the functional strategy for Dubai government organisations, to investigate whether functional units pursuing strategies are led by functional managers with dissimilar attributes, and whether the alignment between managerial characteristics and strategy is related to performance of the functional unit. Based on the extant literature, a research model has been developed, which yields two types of hypothesis. Data was collected by means of interviews and surveys to obtain knowledge of strategy types, and demographic and psychological characteristics for the functional managers. Regression techniques have been used for data analysis rendering support for two types of hypothesis. Consequently, this study supports the view that Upper Echelon theory can also apply at the functional level, emphasising the role of the functional managers, at the lower management levels of the organisations, in strategy implementation.

The urban development in Dubai : A descriptive analysis

Fazal, Fatema January 2008 (has links)
<p> </p><p>The aim of this paper is to analyse the urban development in Dubai by means of the fourquadrant model, presented by DiPasquale and Wheaton, which represents the market for real estate use and assets. The focus is on factors such as economic growth, access to oil, population growth and the incentive of the government to promote developments in Dubai, to study how they affect the real estate market. It is observed how all these factors contribute to the expansion of the construction sector and thereby the stock of space. However, because Dubai's economy is independent of the oil sector, access to oil is solely assumed to contribute to a higher amount of disposable capital and therefore does not have any upward pressure on the rent and the price level as the remaining factors.</p><p> </p>
