Respirable dust and quartz exposure of rock drill operators in two Free State gold minesKemsley, Daniel Michel 16 September 2009 (has links)
Introduction It is well established that gold mine dust is a major cause of pneumoconiosis and other lung diseases. The main sources of dust in gold mines are well documented. Rock drill operators using pneumatic percussion rock drills are at the sharp end of exposure due to the very nature of the drilling process in that rock is pulverized and liberate large amounts of dust even with the addition of copious amounts of water. Historically it has been found that the gold bearing rock formations in South Africa typically contain about 30% quartz. (1) Keeping this in mind, the potential for overexposure is obvious. The actual exposure of rock drill operators to dust and quartz is not well documented and for this reason this research focuses on this particular occupation. Objectives To measure the respirable dust and quartz exposure of Rock Drill Operators in two typical gold mines in the Free State province of South Africa in 2007. Methods
This study is a descriptive, cross sectional, rapid assessment based on the findings of gravimetric sampling results taken at Rock Drill Operators working underground on two different gold mines. The actual gravimetric sampling was done in accordance with NIOSH methodology. The study population consisted of 30 Rock Drillers on one mine and another 30 on a second mine. The Rock Drill Operators was randomly selected using their company numbers and selected by the “Excel” program random number selection function. Ordinary gravimetric sampling, using Gillair pumps, was used and weighing done on the mine by a qualified and well experienced Air Quality Analyst using an appropriate methodology compatible with international best practices. Quartz analysis was done at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) in Johannesburg using a Phillips X-Ray diffraction. (Photo 2). The methodology used by the laboratory technician is conducted strictly according to the manufacturer’s specifications and in line with international best
5
practices. This laboratory participates in quality assurances programmes and is highly regarded internationally. Results The initial hypothesis that exposure underestimation in the past in terms of this particular occupation is confirmed and could be contributable to the difficulties typically experienced when using the traditional gravimetric sampling method. The average quartz percentage was determined to be 25.45% for mine 1 and 38.49% for mine 2 giving an average of 30.67% for both mines. The Total Mass means was 0.73 and 0.23 mg for mine 1 and 2 respectively with an average for the two mines being 0.49 mg. Results for Time Weighted Averages revealed values of 0.69 and 0.22 mg/m3 for mine 1 and 2 respectively with an average of 0.46 mg/m3 for both. In terms of Air Quality Index (AQI) the values were 1.4 and 0.6 for mine 1 and 2 respectively with an average for both mines therefore being 1.1. A comparison with the South African OEL for quartz showed overexposure on 32% of all rock drill operators sampled. When using the NIOSH OEL that figure is even worse at 72%. Based on these results it would thus be fair to conclude that Rock drill operators working without appropriate respiratory equipment will be overexposed and therefore potentially suffer ill health as a result. Discussion and conclusion
Rock drill operators are potentially exposed to high levels of harmful dust and quartz in their normal daily work if not adequately protected using good, effective appropriate and comfortable respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and additionally having proper ventilating velocity. At an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 1.1, it would require the mine Occupational Hygienist to immediately institute remedial action in conjunction with an investigation to determine the reasons for such overexposure. The AQI of 1.46 and 0.6 for Mine 1 and 2 respectively curiously beg the question as to why there is a difference. The answer unfortunately is not clear at first glance as both mines wetted the stope working faces equally well, ventilates the faces with similar velocities
which in turn alludes to similar dilution factors but the only reasonable deduction that could be made is that high TWA respirable quartz pollutant concentrations (mg/m3) values in lots of cases corresponded with low actual quartz values. This could be co-incidental but in fact caused the TWA graph to be inversely proportional to the AQI graph. Couple this to the fact that the actual dust burden is lower in Mine 2 compared to Mine 1 as confirmed by the TWA values obtained, then the results becomes easier to interpret. However, the assumption is made that the TWA values should enjoy more preference in the analytical sense as it could be compared directly to OEL’s which serves to highlight the hypothesis very clear in that rock drill operators are over exposed to a high degree of certainty which in turn concurs with other research done in the past.
The fact that the methods used to drill holes in order to be charged up with explosives has largely remained unchanged for more decades in the mining industry with no viable alternative on the horizon, emphasizes the fact that focused attention and proper risk assessment is called for to protect rock drill operator from harmful exposure. That said the normal paper dust mask cannot in all good conscience be regarded as appropriate RPE for this occupation. The aforementioned risk assessment must determine and ultimately classify which occupations would benefit from “upgrading” to better quality dust masks. To accept only one type of dust mask on a mine would be considered a travesty and contrary to the application of all good occupational hygiene principles. Failing to expedite the aforementioned risk assessment on RPE per occupation will result in failure to place effective safeguard measures in place to protect rock drill operators from harmful dust and will mean that their health will be compromised in time. The development of air line fed type hard hats incorporating a face shield, harness fitted with moisture trap, filter and a snap fit attachment to a compressed air line is likely to be the ultimate solution provided that it is light, comfortable and the introduction is done in a manner that will ensure the understanding in the benefits to be derived from using such a device in the place of ordinary dust masks by Rock
7
Drill Operators. Ultimately, using the Occupational Hygiene hierarchy of control that dictates the first consideration of such control being elimination, coupled with the horrendous ergonomic problems faced by rock drill operators, the solution seems to point inevitably towards meganisation. Using a person in the same homogeneous exposure group (HEG) as that of the rock drill operator as a forced alternative is not advisable as the exposure of a rock drill operator is very unique and certainly not comparable to that of a winch driver for example. The wet environment certainly warrants the investigation into alternative methods for sampling as normal, traditional methods proved to be inconsistent, unreliable and often unusable.

The lunar exploration represents a major part of all national space agencies activities. The scientists have studied the interactions of the lunar surface with the surrounding plasma but also with equipment sent on the lunar surface. Observations have shown the presence of regolith particles covering the surface of the Moon. This layer of dust grains can be several meters thick and these dust particles are very abrasive and adhesive. They are an important risk for equipment sent on the Moon. Thus, the understanding of the origins of dust grains transport is vital to successfully plan future missions. e lunar dust dynamics can be produced by electrostatic phenomena, especially at boundaries between shadowed and unlit regions. Observations of a dust Cloud above the lunar surface are evidence of this dynamic. However, the mechanisms causing this dust Cloud are unknown. It is thus necessary to understand the interactions between dust grains and the lunar environment in order to prevent the pollution of equipment on the lunar surface. The objective of this PhD thesis is the understanding and the modelling of dust particles charge and electrostatic transport near boundaries between shadow and light. An experimental device has been developed to observe dust grains electrostatic transport and to allow a physical understanding of this dynamic. The tests allowed to highlight the most important parameters in the behavior of dust particles. They also led to the adaptation of a numerical model pre-existing and enabled to constraint the parameters used in the model in order to make it more accurate.

To avoid exposure to quartz particles in stone dustOrsén, Mattias, Bengts, Alfred January 2019 (has links)
Stone dust exists in all road and public work projects yet the knowledge about how dangerous exposure to the respirable quartz particles that stone dust contains is lower than what could be preferred. The respirable quartz can cause silicosis and lung cancer as well as heart diseases when the capacity of the lungs is reduced. The purpose of this project was to investigate if there is sufficient information and knowledge about quartz in stone dust in this business today. The purpose was also to realize whether there are quartz-prohibiting measures, such as the usage of breathing aid, taken or not. Because of the time-limit of this project much of the gathering of information was limited to “Skanska AB väg och anläggning, region mitt”. A survey was produced and used as a method in order to get information about the level of knowledge that Skanska employees have, as well as how good Skanska is at informing their employees, about quartz. This survey was sent to all of Skanska Sweden’s staff members in road and public works, central region. In addition to this, interviews were held with supervisors and managers in the same region. The survey results revealed that most employees have some sort of knowledge about quartz but that the information should be made more extensive and be repeated more often. The results also show that the usage of personal breathing aid is inadequate, this is because the aid is hard to breathe through and during long and warm days they’re an annoyance to wear. In addition, it was also brought to light that not everyone who needs a breathing aid have access to one. As another result of the survey and the interviews a guide was made. This guide was formed as a helping hand for the staff management when they’re making risk evaluations and work preparations but also as a short information for all staff members to make it easier for them to remember the easiest and most efficient ways to avoid and protect yourself from quartz particles. In the discussion the possibilities about lowering the hygienic limits of quartz for different parts of the economy was debated. A lowering of the hygienic limit in road and public works should lead to more work, such as this, being done towards a better work environment. The knowledge about how personal health is affected by respirable quartz can always get better and that goes especially for employees that work in direct contact with stone dust. The conclusions of this project were that employees that are exposed to stone dust should be informed more often, preferably before the start of every project, and also the need for personal breathing aid with appurtenant education should be attended to. Furthermore, the work preparations made with every risk evaluation should always be made by staff members with the same qualifications and information. Thus, all work preparations will look consistent and also, the creation of them will be more time efficient.

Laboratorial method development of determination of quantity of particles in air suspension.Scandoleira, Fernando Cezar 17 September 2012 (has links)
This paper presents the results from what was possible to have a general view and the development of a simple and low cost method for the evaluations of the problems caused by the quantity of solids particles in the air that can be used in the lab or in the industrial plant in a lot of areas, but specially in mining segment. Because of the low precision of nowadays manual methodologies (not the electronic methods) available for the proposal of determination of quantity of solids in the air, this study shows a composition of a method with equipments already existents, that when put together transform them it in a more practice and precise one. It uses a portable equipment, with good reproducibility and low cost (considering the parts of the system: tubes, bobbin, vacuum pump and hoses, the actual cost of the system is from US$1.200,00 to US$2.000,00, depending on the costs of the choose supplier), that takes in account the various steps of an evaluation of the polluted atmosphere from solids particles. The innovation of this method consists in a recipient with calculated dimensions that is used to throw the material that is going to be evaluated, causing the loose or a suspension of the dust; this material is collected through a system of filter, with a support and a special vacuum pump. This system is able to collect a quantity of particles separated, during a determinate period of time. After this, the system is weighted and the weigh is compared with the initial weigh, giving parameters for the definitions of the dust controls and treatments. Considering that the Brazils vocation for the agricultural sector and because of the expressive ascendance of this market in this country, this paper was focused in a sector of the mining: the fertilizer industry and the proposal of the method is to make measurements to evaluate additives (specially the anti dusts) and the others materials used in the fertilizers production. The results of the evaluations done, showed a method with good precision.

Porovnání koncentrace tuhých znečišťujících látek uvnitř stáje v rozdílných technologiích velkochovů drůbežeŠONKA, Jan January 2019 (has links)
Intensive poultry farming releases contaminated gases, odors, microorganisms and large concentrations of dust particles. Dust particles have a negative effect on the health of humans and animals. Dangerous particles with a diameter of less than or equal to 4 m, which can travel to the gas exchange area of the human respiratory system, pose a great health risk. The aim of this thesis is to measure PM10 dust particles in intensive poultry farms depending on the age of the chickens. Another goal is to compare the results between farms and compare them with the values shown in Table 5.15 on page 157 of document Final TWG meeting for review of the IRPP (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) BREF (Reference Document on Best Available Techniques). The measurements were carried out at the farm Alas a.s. in Hartmanice and at the farm Farma u lesa a.s. in Sudoměřice u Bechyně.

This work deals with the application of diagnostics tools to study dust formed in magnetized and non magnetized microwave plasma in order to elucidate kinetics processes, and dynamic in these medium. After first chapters (1-3) that are introductory and are intended to describe: (i) the state of the art regarding recent dusty plasmas work; (ii) the approach of this work and (iii) the main diagnostic tools used or developed during this thesis (infrared absorption spectroscopy, extinction / scattering laser method and others), the manuscript can be divided into two part s. The first one deals with the fundamental study of carbon dust created by the use of hydrocarbon gases such as CH 4 and C2H2 (chapter 4 and 5) and the second deals with the study of tungsten dusts formed by the interaction of a solid target exposed to H2 and Ar plasmas thanks to physical sputtering process (Chapter 6) . The latter seeks to understand some of the processes leading to the formation of dust in close conditions of edge fusion plasmas of thermonuclear machines. This work stand out some important results related to the magnetized character of the discharge but also to the plasma source types used. lndeed, it was shown that the use of a local microwave source induces strong temperature gradient in the medium resulting in a preponderance of thermophoresis force on the dynamics of dust compared to other forces (electric, ion dragg) usually considered as dominant forces in well studied dusty plasmas (RF , DC). In addition, it was shown that dust formation was possible in less suitable creation conditions (very low pressure) through the action of the magnetic field which allows ions to be confined longtime enough in the discharge to be able to initiate nucleation processes. Thus, positive ions play a key role in the formation of dust precursors in magnetized plasmas (very low pressure). Finally, it has been shown that the interaction of a hydrogen plasma tungsten target could not only lead to dust formation by sputtering process but also by blistering burst process.

Eletric arc furnace dust recycling in iron ore sintering process aiming zinc removalTelles, Victor Bridi 21 October 2010 (has links)
The aim of this work was to study the use of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) in iron ore sintering process aiming zinc elimination. Firstly, physical and chemical characterizations of the waste were made using X-ray diffraction, microscopy, chemical and size analyses. Iron ore is the main component of the sintering process, this material was characterized by chemical, size and humidity analyses. After, micropellets composed of EAFD 70% and coke breeze 30% with diameters of 3.0-5.0 mm were produced, then they were dried in kiln and classified by sieving. The pellets were incorporated into the iron ore sintering charge using differents proportions, process conditions and addition forms (micropellets, undersize with diameters of 1.0-2.0 mm, or a mixture of EAFD and coke breeze). Sintered samples were collected in each sintering process. These materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), macroscopy and chemical analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to determine the zinc content. Samples of not sintered mixtures were also characterized by chemical analysis aiming the determination the initial amounts of zinc, i.e. in order to check the zinc amounts present in the mixture before the sintering process. The comparation between the zinc contents of sintered samples and not sintered allowed to determine the elimination of zinc during the experiments. About 92% of zinc was eliminated (along with the output gas) with the incorporation of 10% of micropellet in the sintering mixture. Results showed that the zinc elimination in the process is proportional to the ratio reducer/waste.
