Cornago Junior, Vicente Marcio January 2020 (has links)
Dynamic Deformation and Temperature Field Measurement of Metallic Materials

Yizhou Nie (7909019) 22 November 2019 (has links)
<p>In this dissertation, we first used high-speed X-ray phase contrast imaging and infrared thermal imaging techniques to study the formation processes of adiabatic shear bands in aluminum 7075-T6 and 6061-T6 alloys. A modified compression Kolsky bar setup was developed to apply the dynamic loading. A flat hat-shaped specimen design was adopted for generating the shear bands at the designated locations. Experimental results show that 7075-T6 exhibits less ductility and a narrower shear band than 6061-T6. Maximum temperatures of 720 K and 770 K were locally determined within the shear band zones for 7075-T6 and 6061-T6 respectively. This local high temperature zone and the resulting thermal instability were found to relate to the shear band formation in these aluminum alloys. Secondly, a high-speed laser phosphorescence thermal imaging technique is developed and integrated with the compression Kolsky bar setup. The temperature field measurement during dynamic loading are performed at 100 – 200 kHz frame rate with a spatial resolution of 13 µm/pixel. The dynamic compression of copper shows 312 K temperature rise among the material surface. Experiments with thermocouple are also conducted and the results verifies the laser measurement. In the dynamic shear of aluminums, the temperature evolution during adiabatic shear band formation was observed and the results are compared with infrared measurements. The shear band was found forming at approximately 400 K and 440 K for 7075-T6 and 6061-T6, respectively, while the maximum temperature is measured as 650 K for 7075-T6 and 800 K for 6061-T6. Although the maximum temperature agrees with the infrared results, thermal softening is not considered as the main cause of the ASB formation due to the low temperature when the shear band forms.</p>

Latitudinální trend v rychlosti růstu per a koncentrace steroidních hormonů v peří ptáků / Latitudinal trend in feather growth rates and steroid hormone concentrations in avian feathers

Brzobohatá, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
Avian life histories range along the axis from slow to fast, with slow life histories being characterized by greater investments in future reproduction, and fast by greater investments in current reproduction. The concept of pace-of-life syndromes refers to the coevolution of life strategies and related physiological, immunological and behavioral traits. Avian species from tropical areas are characterised by slower life histories (longer parental care, later maturation, smaller clutches, reduced metabolic rate) when compared to temperate zone species. Within this latitudinal gradient, investments in the total amount (weight) of body feathers have also been shown to be reduced in tropical birds. It remains unclear, however, whether feather growth itself follows this latitudinal pattern, and is slower in tropical species. Tropical birds have lower basal levels of corticosterone and testosterone, however available studies are based mainly on analyzes of hormone concentrations from plasma. The first aim of this diploma thesis was to evaluate differences between tropical (Cameroon) and temperate zone (the Czech Republic) passerine species in investments in tail feather growth by using methods of comparative ptilochronology. The second aim of the diploma thesis was to analyze concentrations of steroid...

Behavior and Design of Concrete Frame Corners: Strut-and-Tie Method Approach

Hwa-Ching Wang (9524555) 16 December 2020 (has links)
Reinforced concrete frame corners (that is, knee joints) subjected to closing moments plays an important role of transmitting stress between the two adjoining members. Being categorized as geometric discontinuity regions (D-regions), knee joints cannot be correctly analyzed and designed using traditional sectional analysis procedures. Instead, the strut-and-tie method is particularly suitable for such joints. Although strut-and-tie models provide the means to represent the distribution of stresses within a closing knee joint, questions arise when a curved-bar node is used to model the bar bend of the longitudinal reinforcement at the outer corner. The code-specified design expressions for curved-bar nodes have not been experimentally verified; therefore, the accuracy and conservativeness of the expressions remain unknown. This research project is aimed to provide insights to the proper application of the strut-and-tie method, through the concept of curved-bar nodes, to knee joints under closing moments.<br><br>An experimental program consisting of 24 specimens was conducted to investigate the effect of curved-bar nodes on knee joints under closing moments. An evaluation of the code-specified design expressions was included. The results demonstrate that the minimum code-specified bend radius is appropriate. The current requirements related to bond along the bar bend and clear side cover are shown to be conservative. Based on the test results, a procedure for constructing proper strut-and-tie models for closing knee joints is proposed and verified using an evaluation database consisting of 116 knee joint tests from the literature. Compared to other strength predictive methods and the code-specified strut-and-tie method, the proposed strut-and-tie method mitigates unconservativeness and delivers improved accuracy.<br>In addition to the experimental program and the proposed procedure, non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) using the software ATENA-3D was employed to conduct a parametric analysis as a supplement to the experimental data. Seventy-two numerical models were analyzed to further evaluate the code-specified expressions and the proposed strut-and-tie method. The FEA results are in a good agreement with the experimental observations and corroborate the conclusions from the experimental program regarding current code requirements. Moreover, the parametric analysis further supports the application of the proposed strut-and-tie methodology to knee joints under closing moments.

Question formulation How do one interpret and represent a countrys’ culture through architecture? Is it possible to create a more easily accessible architecture through our method and starting point? Starting point/Method Through a vernacular starting point study the countrys  food culture and traditions and their environments learn more about the country. Application The Finnish Institute is a cultural institution working and promoting Finnish culture in Sweden. The culture exhibited at the institute today could be complemented with a more direct and experiential approach. By taking part of the countrys’ fairly unknown food culture an easy access is created for everyone to get a first experience of the country. Result A Finnish restaurant, bar and event space and gallery at the ground floor of the Finnish Institutes house in central Stockholm. The rooms are configured by using a experiential method to investigate vernacular traditions and characteristics, with starting point in the Finnish food culture. As architects we are giving these rooms themes which configures their materiality, spatiality and atmosphere.
