The false Messiah in Yiddish literature : a comparison between two dramatic worksBen-Shach, Jane Respitz January 1990 (has links)
This thesis discusses the role of the "false Messiah" in modern Yiddish Literature. / The figure of the Messiah in Jewish religious imagination signifies the prophetic yearning for redemption at the end of days, but it also provoked hopes in a strong leader who will bring about social and political redemption. Based on historical models, literature from the twelfth to the twentieth century addressed these "false Messiahs" and in the modern period used them to define and illustrate contemporary catastrophe. / Shlomo Molcho by American Yiddish poet Aaron Glanz-Leyeles and Prince Reuveni by Soviet Yiddish author David Bergelson are two twentieth century poetic historic dramas based on two messianic figures of the sixteenth century. These two modern works are compared in relation to the respective authors' life and times, political and aesthetic outlook, and dramatic powers. The comparison shows the usefulness of the "false Messiah" in dramatizing and expressing difficult contemporary issues.

Effects of exercise training on muscle buffer capacity and H? regulationEdge, Johann January 2007 (has links)
[ Truncated abstract] The purpose of this series of studies was to further our understanding of the relationship between muscle buffer capacity and training. Study one was performed to determine if there were differences in muscle buffer capacity (βmin-vitro) between females of differing training status (i.e., team-sport, endurance-trained and untrained subjects). Studies two and three were then performed to determine if short-term training could improve muscle buffer capacity and what type of training best improves this muscle characteristic (i.e., high-intensity, moderate-intensity or resistance training). Studies four and five were performed to determine if the accumulation of H+ during exercise was a mechanism by which training improved muscle buffer capacity. Below is a summary of these five studies. Study 1. The team-sport group had a significantly higher βmin-vitro than either the endurance-trained or the untrained groups (181 ± 27 v 148 ± 11 v 122 ± 32 'mol H+?g dm-1?pH-1 respectively; P<0.05). The team-sport group also completed significantly more relative total work (299 ± 27 v 263 ± 31 v 223 ± 21 J?kg-1, respectively; P<0.05) and absolute total work (18.2 ± 1.6 v 14.6 ± 2.4 v 13.0 ± 1.9 kJ, respectively; P<0.05) than the endurance-trained or untrained groups during a repeated sprint ability (RSA) test. There was a significant correlation between βmin-vitro and RSA (r=0.67; P<0.05). These findings show that young females competing in team sports have a larger βmin-vitro than either endurance-trained or untrained females. This may be the result of the intermittent, high-intensity activity during training and the match play of team-sport athletes... Conclusions. Our results show that training intensity is an important determinant of muscle buffer capacity. High-intensity interval training (120-150% LT) improved muscle buffer capacity (9 27%), however, neither moderate-intensity or resistance training improved muscle buffer capacity. In contrast higher training intensity (150-180% LT) may negatively affect muscle buffer capacity. Differences in the accumulation of H+ during high-intensity interval training does not appear to be the underlying mechanism for changes to muscle buffer capacity, however changes to this muscle characteristic were associated with pre-training muscle buffer capacity.

This thesis discusses Arthur Azevedo\'s acting as an art critic and collector in the circuit of art in Rio de Janeiro from the 1870\'s until the early years of the Twentieth Century. According to a survey of scattered texts of art written by the author in the \"carioca\" press, he strives to analyze and situate his critical production within the Brazilian art of the second half of the Nineteenth Century. At the same time, it is sought to analyze the set of works (prints, painting, books, albums and manuscripts) gathered by the playwright in this same period. With respect to these two extended performances, it is developed as a central thesis the idea that Arthur Azevedo\'s dual acting was only possible because that period was the restructuring of the artistic movement. Thus, enabling that intellectuals like him could act as critics and collectors without professional training.

This study presents a reflection on the construction of the visual image of America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The recognition of the cognitive potential of images as documents and the perception of the set of relationships that permeate each one of them were important factors during the research. The aim was to understand in which way the prints became the result of discursive aspects of the absorption of ethnographic reports and operations of translation and loci of enunciation of the Other. To accmplish this, we divide this, this thesis was divided into three chapters. The first one addresses reflections about the diversity of the images and questionings that could arise to them, as well as the contributions of several authors to this discussion. The second chapter deals with the woodcuts that accompany the printed letters by Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Interspersed in the writing, they did not necessarily intend to represent the American reality, but translate it into illustrations understandable to the public. The third chapter discusses two specific moments: the construction of an image from stereotypes associated with the representation of objects detached from their original context of use, and the personification of America in allegories. The conclusion refers to the successive layers that gradually shaped the visual image of America and the different meanings thereby conveyed / Doutorado / Historia Cultural / Doutor em História

Bariérové polymerní vrstvy pro ochranu inkjetových tisků / Barrier Polymeric Layers for Inkjet Prints ProtectionŠtěpánková, Eva January 2015 (has links)

Přínos Tschammerovy knihovny v Těšíně pro retrospektivní národní bibliografii / Contribution of The Tschammer Library in Cieszyn for Retrospective National BibliographyŠícha, Vojtěch January 2019 (has links)
The subject of my thesis is the bibliographic processing of the collection of old Czech prints published until 1800 preserved in the Tschammer Library in Cieszyn. The aim is a compilation of bibliographical inventory of preserved editions to give an answer to three research questions. First question is: can a revision of former research results bring something new from the perspective of the national retrospective bibliography? Than whether and how the results of the analysis of the Czech historical collection of specifically local church library can extend the existing knowledge in the research of the history of book culture in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia? Finally, what does the analysis of the provenance of preserved copies held in the Tschammer Library bring to the history of readers, reading and book culture in the Czech lands? The introductory chapter is devoted to the development of evangelical community of Cieszyn Silesia from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century. The second chapter presents the history of the library and the basic characteristics of its historical collections. The third chapter focuses on the results of my bibliographic research. The conclusion brings a summary of the work and an evaluation of the achieved results, followed by a bibliographic inventory of...
