Light Emission From Rare Earth-Doped Silicon Oxide Films Deposited By ECR-PECVD

Li, Jing January 2008 (has links)

Silicon oxide films (oxygen-rich or silicon-rich) doped with various rare-earth (RE) [cerium (Ce), terbium (Tb), europium (Eu) and erbium (Er)] elements have been by deposited by electron cyclotron resonance plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (ECR-PECVD). The successful in-situ incorporation of high concentrations of RE elements has been confirmed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), and the optical properties of the films were analyzed by Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.

Ce, Tb, Eu and Er related emission was observed from the films with corresponding doping and was found to be sensitive to RE concentration, the presence of Si nanoclusters (Si-ncs) and annealing induced structural evolution. The significant enhancement of Ce^3 + emission in Ce-doped oxygen-rich films under annealing in flowing N2 at 1200 °C was found to be related to the formation of cerium silicate whose presence was confirmed by Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectra and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images. The observation of intense Tb^3+ emission from Tb-doped oxygen-rich films under nonresonant excitation revealed the presence of indirect excitation processes. The organic ligands introduced from the Tb(tmhd)3 precursor during deposition was considered as the possible sensitizer. The presence of Si-ncs in Ce or Eu-doped silicon-rich films resulted in the quenching of both RE and Si-ncs PL, while in Tb or Er-doped silicon-rich films the coupling between Si-nes and RE ions can excite RE-related emission efficiently. The formation of Si-ncs with sizes of 2-3 nm in Tb-doped silicon-rich films under annealing in flowing N2 at 1100 and 1200 °C was revealed by HR-TEM images.
/ Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Optical and Electrical Properties of Ce Doped Silicon Based Thin Films

Gao, Yuxuan January 2020 (has links)
Silicon oxide and silicon oxynitride thin films with in-situ cerium (Ce) doping were deposited using electron-cyclotron-resonance plasma enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (ECR-PECVD) on p-type silicon substrates. Oxygen was gradually substituted by nitrogen to produce SiOxNy thin films with different layer compositions. Refractive indices extracted from variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) measurements classified the thin films into two main groups, SiOx and SiOxNy. The thin film composition was studied by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), verifying the gradual increase in nitrogen content. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of samples were obtained using a 375 nm laser diode as an excitation source. All samples were subjected to post-deposition annealing treatment for 1 hour at different temperatures varying from 800 to 1200 °C in both 95% N2 and 5% H2 and pure N2 gas environment, to investigate the effect of hydrogen passivation on the PL irradiance. Samples subjected to annealing yielded considerably stronger blue/white PL emission than as-deposited ones, due to the formation of Ce-containing clusters at a temperature of 1200 °C. Optimum layer composition and annealing condition to produce SiOxNy thin films with maximized Ce3+ excitation efficiency were determined. Besides, the effect of hydrogen fluoride (HF) etching on PL irradiance was studied, showing that an HF (1%) etching duration of 90 s yields the highest PL irradiance. Electrical measurements were carried out for all Ce doped samples as preliminary work for light-emitting device fabrication. ITO and Al are coated as electrodes on the front side of the thin films and backside of the substrates, respectively, using a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering system. I-V measurements were performed to investigate the carrier injection properties and the dominating mechanism of carrier conduction was determined. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Investigation of parameters governing the corrosion protection efficacy of fusion bonded epoxy coatings

Ramniceanu, Andrei 01 June 2007 (has links)
The primary cause of corrosion in transportation structures is due to chlorides which are applied to bridge decks as deicing salts. The direct cost of corrosion damage to the country's infrastructure is approximately $8.3 billion per year. One of the most common corrosion abatement methods in the United States is the barrier protection implemented through the application of fusion bonded epoxy coatings. The purpose of this study was to investigate various coating and exposure parameters to determine their effects on the corrosion of reinforcing steel. The parameters investigated were: chloride content at the bar depth, coated bar corroded area, corrosion product color under the coating, epoxy coating adhesion, coating color, coating damage (holidays and holes), coating thickness, TGA, DSC and EDS analysis and SEM coating cracking investigation. This was accomplished by testing new coated bar specimens as well as specimens extracted from 27 bridge decks located in Virginia. This study demonstrated the following: The extracted ECR coating samples presented extensive cracking compared to the new ECR samples in which the coating cracking was limited to only one sample. The DSC results showed that both the extracted samples as well as new samples are not fully cured during the manufacturing process. The coating degree of curing data also showed that the bars are insufficiently and unevenly heated prior to the application of the powder coating. Additionally, the samples investigated presented significant permanent adhesion loss with little or no epoxy coating residue present on the bar surface, while the EDS analysis showed that once adhesion is lost, corrosion will proceed unimpeded under the coating even in the absence of chlorides. The parameters that presented a direct correlation with the observed corrosion activity were the number of holidays and the number of damaged areas per unit length of bar. This indicates that the passivation of the bare steel exposed to the concrete pore solution at the breaches in the epoxy coating is not the same as a bare bar under similar exposure conditions allowing it instead to corrode at lower concrete chloride concentration levels than bare bars. The results also show a distinct loss of quality control in the handling and possibly storage of new coated bars. The new ECR samples had significantly higher damage density than the samples extracted from concrete even though the coating is damaged during the placement of the concrete, while there was no change in the number of holidays and cure condition. Finally, the data presented further evidence that while limited, the non-destructive corrosion assessment methods available for bare steel reinforced structures may also be used on ECR reinforced structures. In particular, the corrosion rate measurements correlated reasonably well with the chloride concentrations at bar level. This indicates that while the chlorides may not influence the corrosion activity under the coating, they do influence the corrosion activity at breaches in the coating. / Ph. D.

Uso de Data Mining e do ECR para incremento da competitividade de pequenas e médias empresas: um estudo multicaso sobre varejo e indústria alimentícia / not available

Miranda, Claudio de Souza 12 August 2002 (has links)
The Supermarket sector suffered great changes in the last years, mainly with the development of technologies, competition, concentration and some inefficiency in its processes. These and other factors had emerged the sprouting of ECR (Efficient Consumer Response) that creates a stronger relationship between the industry and the retail, through new vision for its operational strategies. The information technology evolution allowed the retail sector to generate a lager volume of data from, mainly, its checkouts. However, this data is not always stored in a correct form or used in a way to be completely profited. The process to transform the data in information and knowledge is developing constantly. One of the actual methodologies to work the data is the Data Mining, which can be described as a variety of tools and strategies that process data, maximizing the utility of these data base. This report analyzes through an exploratory multicase study in the Ribeirão Preto region, in the interior of São Paulo state, the capacity evaluation of Data Mining technology for the strengthening of ECR, especially in small and medium retail and food industries, in the direction to offer a differential of negotiation for the formation of strategic alliances.
